2 Introduction Called the First Gospel (Matthew being the 2 nd ) The clearest description of the Vicarious Substitutionary Atonement in all Scripture Martin Luther said it was a passage that every Christian should know and be able to cite from memory It contains a full description of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ

3 Introduction It s not in the New Testament!! Examples of where it is cited: Romans 15:21, Romans 10:16, John 12:38, 1 Peter 2:22-25, Acts 8:32, etc It s Isaiah 52:13-53:12!!

4 Provenance: We have to see the context Isaiah ben Amoz declared the whole council of God before a sinful Southern kingdom of Judah between 740BC and 680BC a cousin of the royal family His name means YahWeh Saves or YahWeh is Salvation

5 Provenance Cont: Called The Evangelical Prophet The Book of Isaiah is most easily divided into 2 sections Chapters 1-39 deal with God s Judgment In Chapters Isaiah delivers God s message of hope

6 Provenance Cont: Because of Him there will be forgiveness for those who repent of their sins and take refuge in Him (57:13) There will be salvation for Gentiles too (60:3) Eventually He will build a new heaven and new earth where The former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. (65:17)

7 Provenance Cont: This passage of Isaiah is a Hinge between the two sections of the second part of the book Was written 700 years before Christ lived!! who this passage is talking about is Jesus Christ and what is His redemptive work on the cross.

8 Provenance Cont: Jesus is not who this passage is about The real who of this poem is Israel. The poem is written as a conversation between God and Israel. All the verbs are in the past tense

9 For His Own Glory: Give me your full and total attention! Whatever it is that the Servant of Yahweh does He will be completely successful This word Prosper in the Hebrew is Sakal. It means here To Act with Success He can declare the victory 700 years before His Servant even enters the arena

10 For His Own Glory: He is going to receive great glory and honor High and lifted up and exalted, are not descriptions used about just anybody Used in only three other places in the book of Isaiah and no where else in the entire Old Testament in this combination

11 For His Own Glory: Isaiah 6:1 where the prophet says In the year of King Uzziah s death, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, Lofty and Exalted The second occurs in Chapter 33 verse 10 which says Now I will Arise, says the Lord, Now I will be exalted, now I will be lifted up. The Third occurs in Chapter 57 verse 15 where Isaiah delivers one of the well known and classic declarations of Thus says the Lord, but He words it For thus says the High and Exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy

12 For His Own Glory: The Apostle Paul probably had this in mind in his letter to the Philippians Chapter 2:9 where he writes regarding Jesus Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, The servant will be completely successful and will resultantly be given great Glory!

13 For His Own Glory: It s as though God is turning to the Servant for a moment and saying Just as many were astonished at you and then turning back to His original audience he parenthetically says So His appearance was marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men. God is essentially pointing the finger at Israel and saying This is why you Didn t believe, Because his form was so horrifying physically and you couldn t get past it to see the big picture.

14 For His Own Glory: God is setting up a comparison between two types of people. These people were astonished here because they re not seeing the Messiah they d envisioned The Servant of Yahweh is going to physically suffer greatly

15 For His Own Glory: You ll notice that either at the bottom of your page or maybe in the margin or in a center column depending on what kind of Bible you have it has a note that says Or Startle. Then why did the translators leave it as sprinkle in the text and not just make it Startle to begin with?

16 For His Own Glory: The word is Sprinkle It means Sprinkle! The Hebrew word is Nazah (NawZaw) He wants to invoke the image of the High Priest entering the Holy of Holies and sprinkling the blood upon the altar for the sins of the nation of Israel

17 For His Own Glory: Nations means people from all over the world. Jews and Gentiles alike! Some people will be horrified by the work of the Servant that leaves Him so disfigured and some will be cleansed by it. While His body may be physically marred in a horrific way, that s nothing compared to the Exaltation and Glory He receives.

18 For His Own Glory: The Servant is going to Shock and horrify many because He is so disfigured and yet He will be cleansing or purifying many many more Even though the Gentiles had not been told all that Israel had been told so far about the Messiah and what s to come, They will see it for themselves in the work of the Servant of Yahweh.

19 How Much We Know!! He will be sent by God. He will be utterly and completely successful. The Messiah will be a man in the flesh that will receive Glory that is only otherwise attributed to God He is going to suffer so much physically that He will hardly be recognizable as a man.

20 How Much We Know!! This is going to affect people in two ways, some are going to be astonished and horrified and not believe and some are going to be purified and believe This is going to apply not only to Israel but to people from all over the world. He is going to suffer and by His suffering many people will be purified, Jews and Gentiles alike!

21 For this He will receive all the Glory!
