4 INTRODUCTION Some Bid atis had initiated the Mass Mawlid Bid ah a few years ago. It is supported by many Sheikhs and by those who are known as Ulama. However, the Mass Mawlids are extremely evil. They comprise of many Haraam acts. It is sad that no one really speaks against these Mass Mawlid carnivals. Even according to the Shaafi Math-hab, these Mawlids are absolutely Haraam. These Mawlids are Haraam according to all four Math-habs. The Munkaraat (evils) of the Mawlids are no more hidden to anyone. Yet, so many participate in these Haraam festivals. In Islam, there is no such thing as birthday celebrations. No matter how beautiful an act appears to be, it is necessary to view an act in the light of the Sunnah. But there is nothing beautiful in these Mawlids and grand Mouloods. These Mass Mawlids are Mass Bid ahs and these grand Mouloods are grand/huge Bid ahs. The Haraam acts are also mass Haraam and grand/huge Haraam acts. EVILS OF THESE HARAAM CARNIVALS The evils of these Mass Mawlids are plenty. Insha Allah, a few will be enumerated hereunder. 3
5 MAWLID IS A BID AH IN ITSELF Mawlid was originated about 600 years after Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. It never existed in Khairul Quroon in any form whatsoever. Never ever was the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam celebrated! The reasons for celebrating the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam as explained by the Bid atis is happiness. Now, was this happiness not found in the Sahaabah? Were the Sahaabah not happy at the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam? Despite the happiness being of the highest degree in them, they did not commemorate or celebrate the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam neither in Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam s lifetime, nor after the demise of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Speaking about the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is not disputed. Expressing happiness at the birth of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is not disputed. Yes, celebrating the birth of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is disputed. Never ever was the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam celebrated by any of the Sahaabah, Taabieen, Tab-e-Taabieen, Muhadditheen, Fuqaha-e-Mujtahideen or any of their students for over 600 years. The Sahaabah did not gather to celebrate the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. All the Qur aanic Aayaat and Ahaadeeth which the Mawlid Bid atis quote are thus not valid proofs for the Mawlid. The Sahaabah understood the Qur aanic Aayaat and Ahaadeeth better than anyone else. Remember that we are discussing our honourable Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Viewing any act in praise of Nabi 4
6 Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam without considering the lives of the Sahaabah who spent almost their entire lives in the company of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is a sign of deviation. The Sahaabah were those who had the most love for Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Thus, it is unintelligent to defend these Mawlids when the Sahaabah did not stage any event to celebrate the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. It is also necessary for us to mention that the Mawlid Bid atis love to misinterpret our statements. Whenever they are cornered in a trap, they quote the faults of some other Ulama who might also be against Mawlid. Quoting other contemporary Ulama to us, are not amongst the Shar i proofs. It suffices to say, that the Mawlid Bid ah is Haraam simply on the basis of lack of proof in the Qur aan and Hadeeth for it. Had there been any proof from Qur aan and Hadeeth for it, then the very first ones to hold a Mawlid gathering would have been the Sahaabah. Not one Sahaabi celebrated the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. And this is a fact which stands as a solid argument against all personal opinions and all slushy emotions. MORE FACTS ABOUT HAPPINESS Many are misled with the happiness argument. Let us analyze the happiness argument in the light of the Shariah: When a baby is born, it is an occasion of happiness. But, there is no celebration upon the birth of a baby anywhere in the Shariah. Instead, there is the Sunnah act of Aqeeqah. But no celebration like the Kuffaar! 5
7 When a person gets married, it is an occasion of happiness. But, there is no celebration mentioned anywhere in the Shariah. Only Nikah and Waleemah. The Waleemah is a meal which is Sunnah. It is not a celebration. When a person is successful in any matter, one should resort to two Rakaats Salaatush Shukr. There is no celebration for this in the Shariah. The Sahaabah won so many battles. They did not celebrate victory such as having some function or event. There was no Kaafir type of celebration! There was no yearly event to commemorate Badr, etc. Although the Day of Eid, is a day of happiness, there was no special event which the Sahaabah had on the Day of Eid besides the Eid Salaah. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam went for Me raj and the gift of Salaah was given to the Ummah but there was and there is no celebration for this great gift of Salaah. There is no Me raj celebration in Islam. There is no celebration for Laylatul Qadr. On these holy nights, we are instructed by the Shariah to engage in Ibaadah. There is no precedence for celebrating any of the Holy and auspicious nights in Islam. FASTING ON MONDAY The most ludicrous argument in defence of Mawlid is that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam fasted on Monday. Based on this, one Bid ati claims that It is Sunnah to commemorate happiness. But this is baseless. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam did not celebrate his birthday. The incongruency of this argument of the votaries of Mawlid is strengthened by the fact that fasting is the very antithesis of a celebration. 6
8 Making shukr for the Mubaarak birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam or performing extra Ibaadat is not a celebration. It is an insult to intelligence to compare the noble fasting of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam to a Mass Mawlid held at the venue of the devil which is filled with so much Haraam! INTERMINGLING OF THE SEXES The Haraam intermingling which takes place at these Mass Mawlids is mass intermingling which messes up the minds of men and women who really have sexual desires. It is necessary for us to understand that just as Zina is Haraam, everything which leads to Zina is also Haraam. This is mentioned in the Qur aan. And intermingling of the sexes is one of the main causes for the mass Zina which takes place in our Muslim communities which is not a secret anymore. Everyone is aware of the Zina, but yet we remain stubborn and blind to what the Shariah says regarding intermingling which is Haraam. The one who claims that Women sit in Meelad gatherings separate from men with necessary Shari Hijab, is a blatant liar. Even if the ladies and men sit separate, they still intermingle at the entrances, etc. And who are the votaries of Meelaad trying to fool with such a stupid argument! The men can easily view the women and the women can view the men. And worse of all, the grand Bid atis on stage may clearly view the women which is Haraam. Looking at the opposite gender is Haraam. There is simply no Hijaab at these Meelaad gatherings of Fitnah. Ladies and men sit together in the stadium and at these silly grand Mouloods. We are very well aware of it. Anyone who claims that intermingling does not take place at these Bid ah 7
9 Mouloods, must be drunk. Meelaad is Haraam even if there is no intermingling. But the mass intermingling is just too much to hide. Any function, which entails intermingling of the sexes, is a Haraam function. These Mass Mawlids are just like the customary weddings of today in which mass intermingling takes place which renders such gatherings absolutely Haraam. Although Allamah Suyooti approved of a type of Mawlid in his era which was a simple bayaan and a few praises on Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam which obviously differs very vastly from the Mawlid celebrations of today, the Mawlids, Mass Mawlids and grand Mouloods are Haraam even according to Allamah Suyooti. The following is mentioned by Allamah Suyooti: Hazrat Hasan Basri Rahimahullah said: Verily, the gathering of men and women is Bid ah! (Haqeeqatus Sunnah Wal Bid ah of Allamah Suyooti) Undoubtedly, the Mass Mawlid is a Mass Bid ah. According to All the Fuqaha, intermingling is Haraam. Intermingling is integral to these Miladun Nabi Bid ahs. Thus, it should not be difficult to understand that the Mass Mawlids, Meelaads and Grand Mouloods are Haraam. THE PRESENCE OF FEMALES AND THEIR EMERGENCE FROM THE HOME FOR HARAAM ACTS The emergence of females from their homes for futility and Haraam is never permissible. The Masjid is the House of Allah and the greatest of Ibaadat, viz. Salaah with Jamaat takes place at the Masaajid. Yet, all the Fuqaha are unanimous that women 8
10 may not attend the Masaajid. The Fuqaha have written that women are not allowed to attend Walimahs. When women are not allowed to attend Walimahs which are Sunnah, then by what stretch of logic are they allowed to attend Mawlid carnivals of the devil? When women are not allowed to attend the Masaajid, then how is it possible for them to attend the Mass Ladies Mawlid functions? We are not saying that women may not leave their homes for necessities which are recognized and sanctioned by the Shariah. But, the public domain is not for women. A woman s place is at home not the public. Allah Ta ala says: O women! Remain glued to your homes! The so-called Ulama who participate in the Mass mawlid don t seem to know anything about the laws of Hijaab. According to the Shaafi Math-hab and all Math-habs, it is Haraam for women to attend the Masaajid, Eidgah, etc. Ibn Hajar Haitami states: And, no one will hesitate in prohibiting women (from the Musjid and emerging from the home in general) except a ghabi who is a jaahil, and who lacks ability in understanding the subtleties of the Shariah The correct verdict is categorical Tahreem (i.e. haraam for women to come to the Musjid), and this is the Fatwa. And, this in a nutshell is our (Shaafi Math-hab). Allamah Aini has mentioned :And when it is not permissible for women to attend the Musaajid for Salaah, then to a greater extent will it be impermissible for her to attend lectures, especially by those juhhaal who pretend to be ulama. Fakhrul Islaam has mentioned this. (underlining and emphasis ours) The Moulood Juhhaal should take heed. 9
11 Mawlid is Haraam for all. Female emergence and intermingling of the sexes is enough to prove the impermissibility of Mawlid. Even without these first two factors, Mawlid is Haraam. With these two factors, it is definitely even more Haraam. It is indeed very unintelligent to say that it is a necessity for women to participate in Moulood. On the contrary, it is Haraam for a woman to leave her home to participate in Moulood. This is the ruling of the Shariah. NO SCREEN BETWEEN MALES AND FEMALES Although the presence of females at Mawlids and at evil places such as Athlone Stadium is Haraam, another Haraam act takes place at the Mawlids. The males and females are able to view the men without any screen in between. The men and women even sit mixed in Athlone Stadium. The pure wives (Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat) of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam used to wear the Jilbaab. The Jilbaab is such a garment which covers a women from head to toe including the face with one of the eyes exposed. The Jilbaab is Waajib upon very woman when she leaves her home for a necessity. Women are allowed to leave their homes only for necessities. But, despite the wives of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam wearing a Jilbaab which did not reveal the shape of their bodies like the shameless Abayas of this era, Allah Ta ala commanded that there should be a screen/curtain/wall between them and ghair mahram males! Allamah Baghawi who is a Shaafi, has mentioned this in his Tafseer. This is mentioned by the Mufassireen in detail. (Aayat 53 of Surah Ahzaab). 10
12 LOOKING AT THE OPPOSITE GENDER This is so obviously Haraam. This is in fact one of the first steps towards Zina. Everything which leads to Zina is Haraam. Whatever leads to Haraam, is likewise Haraam. This is a principle of the Shariah. The Shaafi Fuqaha and all the Fuqaha clearly mention that it is Haraam to look at women. But, the Ulama-e-Soo and Bid atis who participate in Moulood, break this law of Allah without any shame. Too much Zina of the eyes take place at these functions of the devil. FEMALES WITH THEIR FACES EXPOSED Imaam Nawawi Rahimahullah has written that it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to expose her face to a Jewish or Christian woman. When this is the case, then it is obviously impermissible for a woman to expose her face to ghair mahram men. According to all four Math-habs, it is Haraam for a woman to expose her face to ghair-mahram men and when she is in public. We will not mention another 100 references at this stage in case anyone wishes to respond to this Ijmaa of all four Mathhabs of the prohibition of woman exposing their faces to ghair mahram men. If that happens, then a very thorough and smashing response will be forthcoming. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: This Ilm (of the Shariah) will be borne by the pious of every successive generation. They (the Ulama-e-Haqq) will drive away from it (this Shariah) the interpolations of the deviates, the falsehood of 11
13 the false-mongers and the interpretations of the ignoramuses. (Mishkaat) AURAH There is a difference between Hijaab and Aurah. According to the Hanafi Math-hab, a woman s face is not Aurah. However, it is Haraam for her to expose her face. Several years ago, the socalled Sunni Ulema Council of Transvaal published a booklet in defence of the Mawlood Bid ah. The ignorance of the Sunni Ulema Council is really at the next level. They aver the following: The Shari limit of Hijab for women is that they must cover the whole body besides the face, both hands and feet. Their hair must be covered and the clothes must not be so thin that the colour of the body may be seen. In the light of the Holy Quraan, Hadith and Fiqh it is not compulsory for woman to cover the face, hands and feet from a Ghair Mahram. BLATANT LIES In the name of the Qur aan, this so-called Ulema council speaks blatant lies. The Fuqaha are unanimous that a woman must not expose her face to ghair Mahram men. The face of a woman must be covered in front of ghair Mahram men. The Aayat pertaining to the jilbaab clearly proves that it is necessary for a woman to cover her face when she leaves her home. In the light of the Holy Quraan, Hadith and Fiqh it is compulsory for a woman to cover the face from a Ghair Mahram! 12
14 WHITE CLOTHING Some people are quoting Ahaadeeth in support of the Mass Mawlid, for example they quote the Hadith Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam loved white clothing (Tirmidhi) This is true. But white clothing has no relevance to mawlid celebrations. It is a ludicrous argument not befitting intelligent comment. And, what about all the Ahaadeeth pertaining to Hijab, intermingling, music, and all the other Haraam acts which take place at the Mawlid with the blessings of the Ulama-e-Soo as well as their baseless defence of such Haraam indefensible acts. Consider the Pink-Hijab Day. Pink is a female colour which attracts men. Yet, Haraam functions of Pink Hijab, etc. are hosted by some lost people who don t know much about Hijaab. HONOURING FUSSAAQ Allamah Suyooti has mentioned in his kitaab against Bid aat that whoever honours a person of Bid ah, he has aided in the destruction of Islam. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: when a Faasiq is honoured, the Arsh of Allah shudders. The amount of Fisq which takes place at these Mouloods is really remarkable! What is so Islamic about these Meelaads which are filled with fisq. So much Haraam, yet some cant understand that these Mawlids are Haraam. 13
15 WOMEN SINGING It is Haraam for women to sing in public. Allamah Suyooti has mentioned that it is Haraam to look at a woman, to be alone with her and to listen to her voice according to the Qur aan, the Sunnah and Ijmaa! Shaikh Ibn Hajar Makki (rahmatullah alayh) states in Kaf-fur Ruaa : It is haraam according to us to listen to the singing of a woman whether there is fear of fitnah or not. In Raudhah, Shaikhain have commented on this issue in three places. It is clear that the preferred Math-hab is prohibition. Qaadhi Abut Tayyib (who is among the Shaafi Fuqaha) narrated from the Mashaaikh that it is haraam in every circumstance to listen to the singing of a strange woman, even if the woman is behind a screen. Qaadhi Abul Husain has also explicitly claimed the prohibition of listening to a female singing. There is no difference in this regard. Imaam Azrai (rahmatullah alayh) stated with greater clarity that under no circumstances whatsoever is it permissible to listen to the singing of a woman or a lad regardless of whether the singer is a source of fitnah or not. Even if the singer is not a medium of fitnah, the very act of listening to singing pollutes the soul and incites carnal passion.for safety against this evil passion, listening to singing has been decreed haraam. This hurmat (prohibition) is so clear that no fair-minded person will reject it. Imaam Azrai narrating from Imaam Qurtubi (rahmatullah alayh) said: Even according to the majority of those who say that singing (without music) is permissible, listening to the singing of a woman is haraam. Whether the 14
16 audience consists of only males or only females. In fact, it is haraam to listen to a strange woman reciting even the Qur aan or duas because her voice incites passion and there is the danger of falling into evil. (Kaf-fur Ruaa ) GIRLS SINGING AND GHAIR MAHRAMS LISTENING This has already been explained above. This is Haraam. This is extremely shameless. There is too much fitnah in these Mass Mawlids. No wonder so much Zina! BID AH THIKR Congregational loud thikr is obviously not permissible. It is worse when men and women sing together. THE VENUE ATHLONE STADIUM If the Mawlid was Islamic, then the venue should have also been an Islamic one. But, the Mawlid is Haraam. Therefore, the venue is likewise a Haraam one. The venue is thus appropriate for all the Haraam. At these stadiums, Haraam soccer takes place. These places are evil places. They are places upon which the wrath of Allah descends. HABIBIA BRIGADE The Brigade is totally un-islamic. Those who host Mawlids say that they are doing things out of love for Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi 15
17 Wasallam. But, this Habibia brigade are dressed up like Kuffaar. They play musical instruments. The claims of love for Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam by the Mawlid proponents are very hollow. Their participation in Fisq and Haraam indicates their reality. The Habibia Brigade resembles the coons which are also Haraam. ASWAATUL MADINAH Professional singing is not permissible. Consider the following texts of the Shaafi Math-hab: There is consensus of the Shaafi Ulama on the prohibition of singing even without musical instruments if the singing incites passion. (Ihyaaul Uloom of Imaam Ghazaali) Shaikhul Islam Ahmad Bin Yahya Bin Muhammad Al- Hafeedul Harwari (rahmatullah alayh), a very senior Shaafi Faqeeh, writes: To listen to the singing of a woman and a lad is unanimously haraam. Similarly musical instruments associated with drunkards are haraam, such as tablah (musical drum), tambourine, flute, harp, Iraqi flute and all other musical instruments and different kinds of guitars are haraam. (Majmuatul Hafeed) About professional singing, Allaamah Ibn Hajar Makki (rahmatullah alayh states several views as follows: It is absolutely haraam. According to Imaam Qurtubi, this is also according to the Math-hab of Imaam Maalik 16
18 (rahmatullah alayh). Abu Ishaaq said: I asked Imaam Maalik about the leniency shown towards singing in Madinah, and he replied: In Madinah too singing is the practice of the fussaaq (immoral violators of the Shariah). The masses (in Madinah) consider it forbidden. This is the way of the people of Madinah. Ibrahim Bin Sa d is a solitary exception who does not see anything wrong in it. Imaam Abu Hanifah and all the Ulama of Kufa among whom are Hadhrat Ibraaheem Nakh i, Imaam Sha bi, Hammaad, Sufyaan Thauri and others, are unanimous in this ruling (of prohibition). Two views are attributed to Imaam Shaafi and Imaam Ahmad. The one view is absolutely haraam. Haarith Muhasabi says that singing is just as haraam as carrion (dead animals). In two places of Imaam Raafi i s famous kitaab, Ash-Sharhul Kabeer, it is mentioned with much clarity: Singing is haraam. In Raudhah, Imaam Nawawi adopted this view. Another view is: Engrossment in singing renders it haraam. However, if one sings in an impromptu manner for a short while, then it is permissible. If a person is alone in his house and sings, it is permissible otherwise haraam. (Kaf-fur Ruaa ) Notwithstanding his leniency in the matter of singing, Imaam Ghazaali (rahmatullah alayh) sates: According to Imaam Shaafi (rahmatullah alayh) the testimony of a professional singer is rejected because singing is an abhorrent and Makrooh profession. (Ihyaaul Uloom) 17
19 Imaam Shaafi (rahmatullah alayh) said: In Baghdad I observed a practice which zindeeqs had innovated. They call it Taghbeer. By means of this practice they divert people from the Qur aan. (Ighaathatul Luhfaan) Taghbeer is similar to the qawwaali gatherings of the Ahl-e-Bid ah.the songs sung consist of only poetry intended to decrease worldly attachment and increase concern for the Aakhirah. The songs pertain to topics of Zuhd (renunciation of the world). The singer would sing while members of the audience would play on flutes (mouth organs). Inspite of the esotericism of the songs, Imaam Shaafi brands the singers and the audience as zindeeqs. A zindeeq is a class of unbeliever. What shall we now conclude of the view of Imaam Shaafi regarding the immoral music and singing which Muslims have inherited from the immoral kuffaar of this age? As far as the Hanafi Math-hab is concerned, see our article on Nazm Jalsahs on our website. FAASIQ QURRAA Qari Naaina is a Faasiq. Moreover, every Qaari and Aalim/Sheikh who participates in Moulood is a Faasiq. It is Haraam to honour fussaaq. To allow these fussaaq the stage to render a Qiraat, is honouring a faasiq. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam mentioned that most of the Qurraa will be Munaafiqs. 18
20 PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is Haraam. There is just too much proof for this. Too much photography takes place at these Haraam Mawlid gatherings. TELEVISION The Haraam Moulood will be televised. TV is Haraam. But, the Mawlud proponents are for TV. Those Muslims who appear on TV are Shayaateen. GATHERING OF FUSSAAQ AND ULAMA E SOO Keeping the above in mind, it is undoubtedly a gathering of Ulama-e-Soo and Fussaaq. Ninowy is a deviate. It is not permissible to listen to the discourses of a deviate. The Mawlood comprises of a conglomeration of deviates. They are so deviated that they don t even know the difference between Hijaab and Aurah. TASHABBUH BIL KUFFAAR There is too much Tashabbuh Bil Kuffaar in the Mass Mawlid and in all Mouloods. In fact, there is much Tashabbuh with the Christians in these Mawloods. 19
21 THE SOUK Ibn Hajar has mentioned that it is Haraam for women to participate in Souks. This is mentioned by other Fuqaha as well! I AANAT A LAL MA SIYAT Calling people towards Moulood is Haraam. Thus, the proponents of Mawlid are guilty of I aanat A lal Ma siyat which is Haraam according to the Qur aan. DEFENDING ALL THE HARAAM The worst of all is that the Ulama associated with Moulood are defending all the Haraam. They participate in all the Haraam and obviously defend all the Haraam in order to save their reputation. But, the evils of the Mass Mawlid are so apparent that the Fisq of the Mawlid participants is openly confirmed. One person mentioned: Mawlid is the revival of bringing back the sunnah of the Nabi in our lives. When the Mawlid is so anti- Sunnah with all its Haraam acts that accompany it, then how will it bring back the Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam in our lives?
