5 Al-Salam Institute was established in Oxford, UK in 2006 as a means to facilitate the study of the traditional Islamic sciences through classical texts up to an Advanced level. How Al-Salam Institute Works OUR COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION, RESEARCH, AND OUTREACH ENCOMPASSES OUR BROADER GOALS OF GRASS ROOTS TEACHING AND LEARNING: ISLAMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME The Islamic Scholarship Programme (also known as the Alimiyyah Programme) is our most extensive contribution to the study of Islamic sciences. It combines all of our endeavours with the objective to provide the most robust and comprehensive training for students of knowledge in the West and in all corners of the world. SACRED SCIENCES JOURNEY The annual Sacred Sciences Journey provides a unique opportunity to truly reconnect with the prophetic legacy. Travel all over the globe to visit and study under world-renowned scholars in pursuit of Islamic knowledge and ijazah (text or subject authorisation). SEMINARS ASI Seminars are changing the way Islamic studies are taught in the UK. These thoughtprovoking, highly engaging discussions take place between our Instructors and the wider Muslim community; making the study of Islam enjoyable and accessible to all. ACADEMIC PUBLICATIONS Al-Salam Institute Press is dedicated to the publication and dissemination of digital and print material. Original research and academic commentaries are produced and reviewed every quarter in contribution to the Islamic intellectual heritage. OUTREACH PROJECTS Outreach projects such as residential retreats, family fun-days, and fundraising activities are all undertaken by the ASI community of students and alumni as part of our campaign to give back to the community at large and contribute to a positive, fruitful society. 5

6 The Islamic Scholarship Programme THE AL-SALAM INSTITUTE ALIMIYYAH PROGRAMME IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF ISLAMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES IN THE WEST. Our pioneering three-tier model ensures that students are able to enter the Islamic Scholarship Programme at the appropriate level: Foundation level: Certificate in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences (1 year) Intermediate level: Diploma in Classical Arabic and Islamic Disciplines (3 years) Advanced level: Licence in Islamic Scholarship (2 years) The entire six-year syllabus is primarily authorised by Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi, recipient of the Allama Iqbal prize for contribution to Islamic thought and co-founder of Al-Salam Institute. Through part-time study and a dynamic selection of modules, the course provides a unique opportunity for full-time students and working professionals to study Arabic and the Islamic Sciences to an advanced level. Throughout the curriculum, students will engage in discussion and critical analysis to foster a profound understanding of the prophetic Sira and Hadith, Tafsir, Fiqh, History, Theology, and the principles of jurisprudence underpinning these disciplines. Students will graduate with an incisive understanding of the Arabic language and Islamic sciences as an Alim or Alimah in full. Our pioneering curriculum has already produced graduates of the highest calibre who are marked by their sound knowledge of the authentic sources, contributions to the wider society, and by their embodiment of the prophetic example. 6

Students who successfully complete all modules of the Foundation Level (including written assignments and examinations) will be awarded a Certificate in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences. Since starting with Al-Salam Institute I ve not once had to waste time on pointless debates about sectarianism etc. From the staff, to the teachers, to the students, to the venue I really enjoy my time studying at ASI. 16 ADVANCED LEVEL (TWO YEARS) SHAHADA AL- ALIMIYYAH (LICENCE IN ISLAMIC SCHOLARSHIP) Al-Salam Institute s Advanced Level is designed to equip students with the means and ability to access the sources of Islam directly. The intent is to enable students to develop into leading thinkers and scholars for the coming age, characterised by their sound knowledge of the authentic sources, independence of mind in their application, and their embodiment of religious virtue. The two-year course forms the third and final Level of ASI s six-year ISP. This Level is equivalent to the final years of an alimiyyah degree at a traditional madrasah in the Indian subcontinent. Accordingly, students are expected to have a proper command of Arabic grammar, Islamic Law, and the Principles of the Islamic Sciences. Students who successfully complete the final exams will graduate from ASI with a Shahada al- Alimiyyah (Licence in Islamic Scholarship). The science of hadith, with its academic rigour, objectivity, ways of dealing with uncertainty, demonstration of methods (so that findings are open to scrutiny and criticism), has striking resonances with modern scientific endeavour, and Shaykh Akram brings this to life. The ASI classes have been the highlight of my week for the past two years and I hope they provide continued benefit to the ummah, and to humanity in general. Dr Omar Mahroo, Advanced level
