19 Mohammed Azhar Ali Khan Award presented by Imam Samy Metwally, OMA He served for 25 years in the Ottawa Citizen as foreign affairs analyst, the first non-white to reach a top post in a North American paper. He led OMA in organizing a Tent of Meeting in Parliament with Jewish and Christian organizations. He helped OMA arrange courses on Islam for two years with University of Ottawa. He served as director of multiculturalism in a royal commission. He founded the Interfaith Working Group at Heritage Canada. He initiated the Muslim Coordinating Council, which seeks to bring Muslim organizations together to uplift the community and work with fellow Canadians to promote human rights for all Canadians. He has received the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, the Queen s Diamond Jubilee Medal Award and the Queen s Golden Jubilee Medal Award. He writes a weekly column for the Saudi Gazette, Jeddah.

20 Mobeen Khaja Award presented by Imam Anver Malam of Omar Masjid Mobeen Khaja promotes peace and cross-cultural understanding between Muslims and other religious and ethnic groups. He founded the Association of Progressive Muslims of Ontario and Canada. To fight intolerance Mr. Khaja has worked with churches, the police, tourism officials, governments, schools and communities to break down cultural stereotypes and misconceptions and replace them with understanding.

21 Nazira Naz Tareen Award presented by Bilal mosque Imam M.S. Badat Nazira Tareen has been a community volunteer since She has received several awards including the Order of Ottawa. She founded the Ottawa Muslim Women's Organization and also serves Ottawa Muslim Association and works with neighbours, interfaith leaders, students and others to promote understanding of Islam and to help new comers and others.

22 Dr. G. Sarwar Gilani Award presented by Gatineau mosque Imam Ahmed Limame Dr. Gilani is a World Health Organization-recognized expert in assessing nutritional quality and safety of foods. He received the Queen Elizabeth s Golden Jubilee for his significant scientific contributions, Health Canada Award for Excellence in Science for improving Canadians' health and enhancing Health Canada s science base. He was elected a Foreign Fellow of Pakistan Academy of Sciences.

23 Imam Dr. Zijad Delic Award presented by Abu-Ther Ghaffari mosque Imam Mumtaz Ali A dynamic and progressive Imam, Dr. Delic works tirelessly to help children and youth and others become good citizens and contribute to the community and society; He counsels seniors, married couples and new comers. He has established productive relations with educational institutions and interfaith and other groups.

24 Dr. Munir Sheikh Award presentation by Darussunnah mosque Imam Ismail Albatnuny Dr. Sheikh, the first deputy minister of Asian or African background, served as Canada s Chief Statistician. As a senior public servant he helped in the establishment of Service Canada, reforming the Canada Pension Plan, indexation of Canada s personal income tax and implementation of the largest tax reduction in Canada. He was a co-commissioner for reforming Ontario s Social Assistance program, is a distinguished fellow at Queen s University in Kingston and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Carleton University.

25 Dr. Syed Abdus Sattar Award presentation by Anjuman-e-Badri mosque Imam Hufeza Roker Dr. Sattar is an internationally renowned microbiologist with outstanding professional and scientific achievements. He has received numerous awards, fellowships and medals for his professional excellence and volunteerism. He is professor emeritus of Microbiology and founding director for the Centre for Research on Environmental Microbiology at the University of Ottawa.

26 Dr. Maher Arar Award presentation by Assalam Mosque president Imam Ahmed Hassan The recipient of many awards and an honorary doctorate, Dr. Maher Arar has contributed significantly to balancing national security with human rights. In addition to granting interviews to the media he writes articles for the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, The Guardian, al-jazeera and others. The Globe and Mail named him the "Nation Builder" for In 2007, TIME Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

27 Dr. Monia Mazigh Award presentation by Imam Mohammed Jebara, Cordova Academy In 2002 Dr. Monia Mazigh's husband Maher Arar was deported to Syria where he was tortured and held without charge for over a year. Dr. Mazigh campaigned vigorously for her husband s release and later to re-establish his reputation. In 2004, she ran in the federal election for the NDP, gaining the most votes for her riding in the party's history. Dr. Mazigh's book Hope and Despair documents her ordeal. In 2011, Dr. Mazigh published a novel "Miroirs et mirages" relating the stories of four Muslims women.

28 Dr. Safaa Fouda Award presentation by president of SNMC Emdad Khan Dr. Fouda is active in interfaith, charitable work, and in building cross-cultural bridges to generate harmony and eliminate fear and prejudice. Her approach is knowledge-sharing and raising awareness. She organized and delivered courses on Islam to faith communities, universities, RCMP, and government organizations.

29 Syed Mumtaz Akhtar Award presentation by Um Aliyah, president of NISA Mr. Akhtar has served as chair of Human Concern International, president of Ottawa Muslim Association and the Muslim Community of Ottawa-Gatineau. He is chair of Sadaqa Food Bank and of the Board of Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services of Ontario. He established the first Muslim mortuary in Ottawa and volunteered as spiritual counselor for Muslims in hospitals.

30 Mashooda-Lubna Syed Award presentation by Kanata president Br. Taemoor Abbasi Ms. Mashooda-Lubna Syed has worked vigorously to promote intercultural understanding. She led the Canada Pakistan Association and turned a dormant organization into a vibrant one. She actively builds bridges with fellow Canadians in other community and ethnic groups to promote a more accepting society. She has also received the 10-year volunteer award as well as the leading women's award for the last three consecutive years

31 Dr. Sheema Khan Award presentation by HCI executive director Kaleem Akhtar Dr. Sheema Khan has written a monthly column for the Globe and Mail since She is the author of "Of Hockey and Hijab: Reflections of a Canadian-Muslim Woman". She holds an M.A. in Physics and Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Harvard. She founded CAIR-CAN and served as its chair. She contributed to the anthology "Omar Khadr: O Canada". In 2012, she, along with the Muslim Resource Centre of London, Ontario, established "The Family Honour Project" to combat the honour-based violence.

32 Ernest Tannis Award presentation by Canadian Somali Mothers president Entisar Yusuf Ernest Tannis is a pioneer in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mediation/negotiation and has written books and articles on the subject. He is co-founder of charities, including Reach Canada which provides free legal services and educational programs for Persons With Disabilities. He co-founded the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution. He is pro bono lawyer for GAATES, a world leader in advising governments on serving persons with disabilities. He has received awards for his weekly radio series on CHIN radio.

33 Hodan Mohamed Award presented by Muslim Association of Canada representative Tarek Al-Houssary Hodan Mohamed is a policy analyst in the public service. She is also a PhD candidate in Population Health at the University of Ottawa. She works from an anti-oppression perspective and social justice. She serves grass-roots organizations including Sahan Literary Forum enabling writers about the Horn of Africa to give free public talks and the Canadian Somali Mothers Association, which combats youth delinquency.

34 Abdulnaser Ali Atef Award presented by Bilal mosque president Tahawar Rana Mr. Atef played a key role in the Yemeni community`s integration with the mainstream. He published the first Yemeni newsletter across Canada as a Yemeni Voice in Canada in Arabic and English and established an Arabic school classes for Yemeni children.

35 Dr. Nasir Islam Award presented by CIC and Bangladesh community delegate Zamil Zaman Dr. Islam served as Chairman of the Department of Political Science at Laval University and Director of the MBA Program at the University of Ottawa. His academic work has been published in international journals. The international Association of Schools and Institutes of Public Administration gave him the Pierre de Celles award for academic excellence in He provided sensitivity training for the Canadian Armed Forces Personnel and Foreign Service Officers posted to Afghanistan. His contribution was lauded by the Privy Council Office.

36 Mazhar Mufti Award presentation by Canadian Turkish Islamic Foundation president Mustafa Sasal Mr. Mufti was nominated by the RCMP for his dedicated volunteer services as national treasurer for the RCMP Veterans Association.

37 LCdr. Wafa Dabbagh, posthumously Lt. Cdr. Dabbagh became the first Muslim woman wearing hijab to join the Canadian armed forces. As she lay in the hospital dying of cancer she was presented the award for "her dedication to duty, her cheerful spirit and for improving understanding between Muslims and the Canadian military." Deceased 5 June 2012

38 Altaf Sovani Award presented by Dr. Anis Rahman of Canada-Pakistan Association Mr. Altaf Sovani is the Chair, School of Hospitality, Tourism & wellness at Algonquin College. He is a certified Hospitality educator and has provided leadership, management and administration at Algonquin and has forged partnerships with Industry.

39 Sarwat Humayun Award presentation by Iranian Friendship group president Akbar Manousi Mrs. Sarwat Humayun's informative s for MCC-NCR have become the most useful source for the community to learn of events and developments of relevance to us. She also works tirelessly in other areas to help. In the early years of the OMA s Ottawa Muslim Women s Auxiliary she held executive positions for many terms.

40 Dr. Atiq Rehman Award presentation by Fazal Junaid, president of Islamic Supreme Council Ottawa Dr. Atiq Rehman is helping MCC-NCR to promote unity among the Muslims of Ottawa. He has served as chair of the nomination committee for Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award Committee; chair, election committee; chair, grants committee, received funding from Heritage Canada to celebrate Canada Day (2012); and co-chair By-Laws committee. He helped to register the council with Industry Canada.

41 Mohammed Master Award presentation by Gatineau mosque president Mohamed Bougataya Mr. Mohammed Master serves as the delegate of Anjuman-e-Badri and has served with dedication and competence wherever and whenever he is needed in the grants, awards, steering and election committees.

42 Tariq Ahsan Award presentation by Dr. Safaa Fouda on behalf of CCMW-O president Farhat Rahman Mr. Tariq Ahsan worked painstakingly on drafting our bylaws, got us registered with Industry Canada and has filed our application for tax-exempt status.

43 Hussein Ghadbane family Award presented to Mohammad Ghadban by Naeem Malik, first OMA president The late Mr. Hussein Ghadbane and his wife, and later their children and grandchildren provided continuing, dedicated service to the community going back to OMA's inception in He was one of the originators of the Ottawa Mosque project and his wife was a key worker in the Ottawa Muslim Women's Auxiliary.

44 Mohammed Ghadban family Award presented to Rafiq Ghadban by OMWO president Shano Bejkosalaj The late Mr. Mohammed Ghadban and his wife, and later their children, provided invaluable, ongoing, dedicated service to the community since OMA's inception in His wife was a key worker in the Ottawa Muslim Women's Auxiliary.

45 Nusret Bejkosalaj family Award presentation by Liaquat Khan, president of Guyanese Muslim Caribbean Association Nusret and Shano are among the founders of OMA. Nusret helped Muslims gain employment and immigration and answered to the needs of the community for decades. He also worked with churches in sponsoring 300 refugees. Shano was a co-founder with the late Eva Wahab of the Ottawa Muslim Women's Auxiliary. She helped refugees from Kosovo in She is a founding member and member of OMWO and founding member of Canadian-Albanian Organization.
