7 FUN FACT AAJ KA GYAN PART 1 Under PRASAD Scheme, the Government of India (GoI) has recently included Gangotri and Yamunotri in Uttrarakhand, Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh and Parasnath in Jharkhand to develop pilgrimage and heritage destinations in the country. With the new additions, the number of sites under the scheme has now become 41 in 25 states. The acronym PRASAD stands for Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive. It was launched by Ministry of Tourism in The scheme aimed at infrastructure development such as entry points (road, rail and water transport), last mile connectivity, basic tourism facilities like Information/ Interpretation Centers, ATM/ money exchange, eco-friendly modes of transport, lighting and illumination with renewable sources of energy, parking, drinking water, toilets, cloak room, waiting rooms, first aid centers, craft bazars /haats/ souvenir shops/ cafeteria, rain shelters, telecom facilities, internet connectivity etc. PART 2 The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the nodal Ministry of the Government of India (GoI), has been conferred the Skoch Award for National Significance at an event held recently in New Delhi. The award was received by Secretary of MNRE, Anand Kumar. The award has been conferred on the Ministry considering its purpose and critical role played in installing about 73 GW renewable energy capacity in the country. With 21% of total installed capacity, within the year renewable energy grossed a magic figure of providing one billion units of electricity in the country. Today, India ranked 4th in the world in wind energy capacity and 5th in solar & total renewable energy capacity installed in the world. India has played a critical role in setting up of international solar alliance. Further, India moved a resolution during the first meeting for making it a global initiative.

9 Plea seeks entry of women inside Nizamuddin dargah A petition has been moved before the Delhi High Court seeking entry of women into the sanctum sanctorum of the Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah here. The move comes two months after the Supreme Court lifted the centuries-old practice of prohibiting women from entering the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. Plea by law students A High Court Bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V.K. Rao sought the reply of the Centre, the city government and the police on the petition filed in public interest by three women, who are studying law. The Bench also sought a response from the trust managing the dargah before the next date of hearing in April 11, The petition has claimed that there is a notice outside the dargah a shrine built over the grave of a religious figure clearly stating in English and Hindi that women are not allowed inside.

10 CONTINUE The notice board at the dargah reads Auraton ka andar jaana mana hai, which is also written in English Ladies are not allowed inside. While the entire nation is professing and advocating the entry of women in all religious institutions without discrimination and the same having been further allowed and promoted by the Supreme Court in the recent Sabarimala judgment, women in the heart of the country the national capital are being discriminated against with their entry into the dargah of the Hazrat Nizamuddin, that is just 15 minutes away from the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court, the plea said. The conception of the petition began with the three women going to Hazrat Nizamuddin Ali dargah to pay homage and offer a chaadar at the shrine on November 27, 2018, when they were prohibited from entering the dargah. They were also not allowed to offer chaadar and flowers, and perform rituals.

11 CONCLUSION Public place It was contended by the petitioners that Nizamuddin dargah by its very nature is a public place and prohibition of entry of anyone in a public place on the basis of gender is contrary to the framework of the Constitution. The law students claimed that they made several representations to authorities, including the Delhi Police, but did not get any response. Women allowed There are many dargahs in other States which do not prohibit the entry of women, including Ajmer Sharif dargah in Rajasthan and Haji Ali dargah in Maharashtra.

13 Shock resignation: on Urjit Patel quitting as RBI chief The Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel has cited personal reasons for resigning with immediate effect, but anyone who has followed the events of the last couple of months will know it was anything but that. It was a period during which the Centre and the RBI were engaged in an unseemly tussle over a clutch of issues that had a bearing on the RBI s autonomy, something that Mr. Patel had sought to preserve. As his predecessor Raghuram pointed out, when a public servant resigns, it is a sign of protest. Mr. Patel s decision clearly caught everyone by surprise as it came following perceptions of a thaw in relations between the Centre and the RBI, after an agreement was hammered out at a board meeting last month on some of the contentious issues, including a controversial proposal to use the central bank s reserves for fiscal purposes.

14 CONTINUE But clearly, the larger issue that divided the Centre and the RBI which related to autonomy and the independent functioning of the Governor was never fully resolved. Mr. Patel s resignation is a serious embarrassment to the NDA government, which has scrambled to make statements expressing surprise at his action and praising him for his work. As attempts to signal that it had nothing to do with Mr. Patel stepping down and to reinforce that he did indeed quit for personal reasons, these remarks were largely unconvincing. Mr. Patel s resignation is bound to raise questions about the Centre s ability to work with independent-minded economists, coming as it does following the departures of former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, who was at odds with the Centre on many issues, and the sudden resignations of Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya and Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian. It is true that Mr. Patel s reclusive and non-communicative style may not have endeared him to some bankers, but his eminence as an economist and his understanding of macro-economic issues is undisputed.

15 CONCLUSION Governments have sparred with the RBI before on the issue of autonomy, but the NDA government went one step further by starting consultations under Section 7 of the RBI Act, which gives the Centre the power to direct the RBI to act in specific ways. The immediate priority now is for the Centre to fill the breach without wasting time. Global investors and the markets are already on edge, and they will be keenly watching, along with the ratings agencies, how the Centre handles this self-created crisis. The incoming Governor is bound to be judged, among other things, by perceptions about his independence. The RBI cannot be treated as if it is just another government department. And the Centre will now need to demonstrate that a post-patel central bank will continue to enjoy operational autonomy. Anything less will not go down well with both investors and the markets.
