SADASIVAN Vol. 5 Pages-12 The 26th Annual General Meeting of Karnataka United Sourashtra Organisation was held on Sunday, 15th April, 2018 from am at the premises of Adithya Towers, Basaveshwara Nagar, Bangalore with large number of members, guests and relatives. Narasimman. In his inaugural speech T.S. Jayabalan, General Secretary, KUSO, narrated in detail the important 11 activities of KUSO in a calendar year and invited the general public to join KUSO as members. President V.G. Gopalakrishnan welcomed the gathering. In his speech, he specified that if a person enters into public service in the society his health condition will improve and therefore he made an appeal to all to render public service in the community. After his speech, vadai and tea were served to all the visitors. Later, Treasurer K.K. Devadoss Babu read out the details of Income and Expenditure Account of KUSO for the year and the same was unanimously accepted by the members. Subsequently, the Election for the years was held. U.K. Kalyanaramudu and T.S. Balaraman, both are founder members of KUSO, worked as Election Officers and declared elected 15 Committee Members. The new committee members have unanimously selected V.G. Gopalakrishnan as their President. President V.G. Gopalakrishnan later selected Higher Level Executives from the committee members. 4 4 B. SOURASHTRA LITERATURE Prose, Poetry and Drama works are available in Sourashtra Language. The earliest Saurashtra song (poetry) available is the one composed by Sugandha Dhoopa Thirthaaryar tadiku povus podi talo hiir. The magnum opus in Sourashtra Language is Sourashtra Sangita Ramayanu (Bold) composed by Kavi Venkatasuri ( ) published in 1905 in Telugu script. While the first five Kandams (parts) have been published in Tamil script, the last part Yuddha Kandam is yet to be published in Tamil script. Its language is archaic and without commentary it is difficult to understand. The next popular songs are those of Natana Gopala Nayaki ( ) published in Tamil script. Because of its simplicity and devotional character, they have become popular and sung in concerts and in bhajans. A Saurashtra-English Dictionary lists more than 70 works in Sourashtra language out of which 21 mostly written by Advaitananda Bharati are in manuscript form only and they are yet to be printed. Of late, many more original works are authored and published in Sourashtram. C. SOURASHTRA SCRIPT David Dringer, D.Litt., in his book The Alphabet A Key to the history of Mankind (1948) writes on Sourashtram Script in Appendix to Indian Branch (Ch. VI) as Sri H.R. Randle bases his philological researches concerning this matter on two little books written in the Sourashtram script by T.M. Rama Rai, 'First Catechism of Sourashtra Grammar' Madras (1905) and 'Sourashtra Bodhini' (1906), the script in the usual order of the Indian characters and the lists of the complex combinations of all the vowels with all the consonants, published in the later, have enabled Sri Randle to read both these books. Both Sri Randle and Sri A. Master (of London School of Oriental and African Studies) suggest that there may be a connection between the modern Saurashtrans and the ancient community of silk weavers whose activity is recorded in the famous inscription discovered in Mandasor (Western Malwa) and dated in the years 493 and 529 of Malwa era, corresponding to A.D and 473 (see J.F. Fleet Corpus Inscriptionum Indicarum Vol.III 'Inscriptions of early Gupta Kings and their successors' Part 1 No.18). I do not think the modern Sourashtran script which since 1880 is also used in print is directly connected with the Mandasor inscription. The origin of the Sourashtra character is still an open problem. According to my opinion it is a more or less recent invention being employed for an isolated language, completely surrounded by languages belonging to a totally different linguistic family. According to Mr. Master, the script may have descended from a very ancient writing which probably employed in the Indo- Aryan country of origin of the Sourashtrans, but in the course of its development, it became influenced by

5 May 2018 the scripts of the Indo-Aryan countries, through which the Sourashtrans passed in their migration before having reached their new homeland. My doubt as to this theory is this that the script appears as a uniform system, based on sound foundation and not as an outcome of a long development. T.M. Rama Rai did not invent the Sourashtra script. He introduced some changes to suit to the requirements of modern printing, as is evidenced by his various publications. It is easy to learn and practice for its uniformity in formation of vowel-consonant characters. The grapheme represents the actual pronunciation of the vowels and the consonants unlike the English and Tamil graphemes wherein one character represents more than one sound. In other words the pronunciation of English and Tamil words can be acquired only by moving with the native speakers whereas the Sourashtra Language can be learnt and spoken without meeting the Sourashtrans. UNNATI SKILL CENTRE Unnati, a non-profit organisation is running a 'Skill Development Centre' at Bangalore. This is to help poor youngsters, who after completing the study (upto 12th Std) and also those who dropped out, to learn a useful skill to become employable. They give training by conducting courses in different skills [incl. Computer, office admin, DTP, Beautician (girls) etc] for a period of 50 days at the completion of which they are provided guaranteed jobs. Till now they have conducted more than 70 such courses and provided employment to thousands. Sri K.V.Pathy (Past President, KUSO and Past Faculty, Unnati) had gone with Sri T.S. Jayabalan, (Gen. Sec., KUSO and Chairman, Trainig and Skill Development Team, Sourashtra Madhya Sabha) to Unnati Skill Centre on 18th April, 2018 to explore the prospects for our youth. Venkataraman, President, Krishnan Kovil Nirvaga Sabhai, Palayamkottai. Dr. S.R. Sriram Shekar, President, Sourashtra Madhya Sabha made special and inaugurated the camp. Sri S.R. There was an overwhelming response from our community students and parents. Orientation and need for the skills development and making our students employable were shared by the committee members on 21st. After the meeting, the team collected the resume of the students to preview and to connect them with the employers whenever there are opportunities. On 22nd, the students assembled in Lakshmi Raman Matric Higher Secondary School for the training. The students were briefed to think on Employability skills and were explained in detail about the skills to possess and implement to get a job. Sri V.R. Balasubramanian, Dy. After lunch, the training program continued and students were given more ideas on how they should appear for an interview. The students were also given many ideas and tips on improving their English fluency. This is the first time Madya Saba has organized such training program to our students which is a great success and looking forward more such training programs to help our students and uplift our community. Sri S.A. Anantharaman was very kind enough in arranging above training camp by way of printing invitations and certificates. 10 10 May 2018 A few words about Sourashtra Mahajana Sangham At this juncture of my visit in the temple city of Madurai, I am very much pleased to point out the devotion and austerity shown by the 'Ariyankavu Devasthana Sourashtra Mahajana Sangham' to the Almighty Lord Ayyappa. Since many decades, His Highness, The Maharaja of Travancore T.N. Samy and the Travancore Devaswom Board maintain a warm and healthy relationship with the Sourashtra Community, as they are the patrons of Pandiyan Mudippu (Betrothal) and Thrikkalyanam festivals of Sri Ayyappa with Smt. Pushkala Devi, celebrating every year at Ariyankagu, jointly by Travancore Devaswom Board and Sourashtra Mahajans in Shastric ritews of Sourashtra Community. I believe that the progress, prosperity and identity attained by the community is due to the grace of Lord Ayyappa and service rendered by them to the deity. I with great pleasure appreciate the open The Story of Ramayana has inspired poets and literary men through the ages. Loftiness and gracea attach to the Ramayana and its characfters. So it has been considered in almost all the major languages of the world. The present book, published on the occasion of the silver jubilee of Bhashabhimani, is a welcome addition to the Saurashtra language literature. In the last century after Kavi Venkatasuri's Sangita Ramayana we have Vachana Ramayana by Prof. Rama Rai. These books have been written in classical style requiring the assistance of scholars to understand them properly. But the book under review is presented in a simple language for the benefit of the common people. The movement of stanzas is natural and unimpeded. The pictures are perfect and straight. The author's talent as an excellent poet is reflected in the poems, saturated with imageries, natural depictions, melody and other literary beauties. Following Valmiki the author has presented the theme adorning it with local colouring and reflecting the regional customs and habits and cultural pattern. He draws parrells from the art of weaving and weaves words to shine like silk fabrics. He compares fish in a brook rushing hither and thither to a shuttlecock moving in opposite direction in handloom weaving. The work consists of six cantos with 1023 songs written in clear, crisp and modern Saurashtra language. The 275 stanzas in Sundara Parva are superb. Apart from using existing words in the Saurashtra language, the author has coined new words and phrases and one can collect about 5000 words which will enrich the language. At a time when young scholars are preparing a new Saurashtra Tamil English Dictionary on the model of Saurashtra heartedness, the gravity of bhakhi, brotherhood and nationalistic and secular outlook of the Sourashtra brothers that run parallel to the golden principle or Lord Ayyappa i.e., Tat Twa Masi which means that is Thou. I wish the Sourashtra Community to be showered with the grace of Lord Ayyappa forever. Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa. Prof. D. In the story the author has omitted incidents such as the fire ordeal by Sita before joining Rama as he felt that it was not in tune with the noble characteristics of the hero.
