November 19, 1965 Volume XI, Number 10 POTENTIAL STUDENTS ON CAMPUS Covenant's second "College for a Day" program begins next Thursday when students begin arriving on campus to see what our school is like for them s e lv e s. Almost one hundred students ^ P e expected to take part in the activities that are scheduled for November 26. Juniors and seniors in high school from all over the country and many from Chattanooga will be taking advantage of the programs to acquaint potential students with our campus. For many of these young people, this program will provide an opportunity for their first real visit to a college campus. The aim will be to give them as adequate a picture as possible of what it means to be a Covenanter. The students will be registering and attending Friday classes and special program s for their benefit. Each student organization on campus will be providing a display to explain the activities and purposes of the organizations. Many of the students will be invited to stay on campus overnight. The few hours that these students will spend on campus will go a great way in giving them the impression that they will have of Covenant and the importance that each individual student puts in his desire that "... in all things He might have the preeminence." Each high schooler will be challenged with the possibility of future study for them at Covenant. * * * Tonight, in addition to Mr. Morrison s Piano Concert, Covenant's second candle-light dinner will be held. A fter-five or Sunday dress is appropriate.

BELZ AND BOYS BOW OUT Berry College of Rome, Georgia, frosted the Covenant cake of catastrophe Saturday 6 to 0 in the Scot s final soccer mis-match of the present season. The game presented a familiar theme as the Scots failed to mount up a cohesively hustling assault in the force of inspired play by a determined foe. In producing Covenant s first winless season since the move from 3t. Louis, Covenant soccer is culpable in presenting the Covenant name ignominiously in the Southeast. Througout the season the specific blame for this culpable clan has been directed at the players themselves who have demonstrated a consistent inability t o uphold the Covenant tradition of a scrapping all-out performance. Certainly the players are greatly responsible for the myriad of listless loss, but now that soccer has reached the end of this season s rope, the sites of criticism must be aimed elsewhere, for the soccer corpse owes its existence not only to the "anemic eleven," but also to Coach Belz whose efforts to create a life - giving serum for the sinking squad met with constant failure. Despite apathy, injury and frustation,. the Scots remained throughout the season potential victors. The fact that they did not win must be attributed in part to coaching which failed to contribute the mental design and the spiritual inspiration needed to shape potential into a winner. Because they lacked proper plays, the forwards never developed a scoring punch; because they were vague on precise zones of coverage the defense was never able to repair its leaks; and because they were an unusually uninspired group of boys w.tliout dynamic leadership, they never received an initiatory spark tantamount to the momentum needed for success. Their potential might as well have rested in the cheerleaders. The season of defeat is ended. The potential including high-scoring Peter Chan, and Mac Grey, probably one of the finest players in the Southeast, will be back next year. Mr* Belz in his pioneer year of coaching has gained vital experience winner-producing experience. He will never be able to go out and hustle for his boys, but next year (if popular rumors of his resignation or dismissal are false) under his improved leadership, if the boys decide to go out and hustle for themselves look for a winner in Covenant soccer. E. D.?

INTELLECTUAL STIMULATION Those who risked Steve Lobb s driving and a 4:30 a.m. departure for Wheaton and its twelfth annual Philosophy Conierence two weeks ago were well r e warded for their courage. The theme of the conference was Dr. Gordon Clark s concept of Revelation. Dr. Clark, it should be noted, is a former teacher of M r. Sanderson, having an important influence on his thinking, and in addition is the editor of one of the texts used in History of Philosophy, one of the eleven books he h a s authored or edited. D r. Clark d e liv e re d three lectures on the neces- ^ P ity, the significance, and the application of Revelation, and two other lectures were given by prominent C hristian philosophers on D r. Clark*s philosophy of science and his use of re ligious language. In addition, several post-lecture discussion sessions and a formally scheduled discussion period served to stir things up and occasionally muddy the w aters. Two things stand out in retrospect. The first was Dr. Clark s intellectually challenging statement in philosophical term s of the Calvinist's position. The second was the strong Arminianism evidenced so prevalently among the scholarly gentlemen attending the conference;. serving to rem ind us that efforts to declare the fear of man as the beginning of knowledge are doomed to confusion. Finally, the conference was a time of fellowship and renewing of friendships t or all who attended and, on the whole, a very rewarding experience. Ed Fielding I Sigh For Ham on Wry Pawky LAwKy I rather favor Ogden Nash; And M r. Hugh s revision, Of T. S. Eliot is a smash, (Not m erely a collision). Lord Byron's quite a wit at tim es, And I like Pawky LAwKy, Doctor Seuss has matching rhymes, But who is Walky Talky? Pay no attention to his verse, For Juniors all will sigh, When Seniors suddenly disperse, And we have Ham on wry! FROM THE EDITORS Have you checked up after an announcement regarding a "required" meeting of an organization to see just how jnany people take their obligation

seriously and show up? Usually less than half of the members show up: among those who don't, some may tell their leader that they aren't coming, coupled with a lame excuse, but most of them don't even bother doing that. t Just what is responsibility? Taking on a job and then figuring that there is no time to finish it and at the last minute retreating with an excuse? Or perhaps taking on a job and doing it badly. Perhaps we sign up to be in something just to run up a seemingly overflowing tabulation of activities. We accept appointment or election for office and then don t take time to carry out the responsibility that goes with the honor of the office--sometimes pushing jobs on other members of the class or appointing others to do the work. The head of a committee or an elected office carries some "honor with it, and yet most of us take on more than we can do in the time we have. We do a slip-shod job and expect to be lauded for having done anything at all. We take no responsibility to carry out a We get along fine without it. Everyone takes pains to inform us personally if we are to be anywhere: We are coaxed and cajoled to do what we should do on our own. Many see nothing wrong with being treated as the children we once were, but surely there are some who can see a glimmer of a need and it is up to those students who can see the need for a change from the status quo an improve** ment over the pampered and coddled life that we are now living to something more m ature to do something about it. Responsibility for a change? It's up to task to be done whether it is work for us. the TARTAN, teaching a class, or doing the periodic work we are asked * * * to do by the head of our organization. There are many considerate people in the We expect organization heads to remind world, but Covenant seems to possess a us again and again about meetings and things which we should do as a matter of course. An announcement aopears on the bulletin board but, that not being sufficient, it must appear in the BAGPIPE and be announced at at least three m eals. We can t remember, or don't think, it is our obligation to do so. If you are still with us, you are in a minority. M jst students, according to a poll recently taken, consider this publication as irrelevant. If an important announcement were to appear here and nowhere else, most people would never find out about it. There is no need after all, why bother? who cares? very small percentage of them. This is not a particularly fait ering situation, and it would be appreciated by many if -4-

some kind of an attempt were made to remedy the situation. This lack of consideration on the part of the students has manifested itself very plainly in the last couple of months. For years it has been a Covenant custom for the Cbmmunity Choir (formerly the Campus Choir but changed recently to include persons from the surrounding area who wish to participate) to present the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah before Covenant's Christmas recess. In the past, this performance has been an entertaining and edifying addition to the activities of Covenant students and residents of the locality alike. A very tight schedule is a common and understandable state of affairs, but students are expected to know their capabilities and undertake only those things to which they can devote an adequate amount of tim e. Because of inconsistent attendance, inconsiderate scheduling of other activities (such as regular Thursday night fake senior sneaks), and a "who-cares" attitude on the part of many, rehearsals for the Messiah have been cancelled and due to the above-mentioned lack of consideration, the Messiah will not be performed this year. It is only fitting that those students who, after having agreed to, just couldn't find the time to attend one hour-and-a-half rehearsal a week realize that their time was no more precious than tiut of Mr. Hamm and the faithful few who attended rehearsals and whose tim e was wasted. The damage is done, and some contrite thought on the matter and a few sincere apologies seem to be the order of the day. L. F. CAN LIFE BE RELATED TO CHRIST? Every time I read the daily news or Time magazine, I become more al ert to the lost and confused state of the average American student. I feel that most of the young people in the United States have attended church and might have gone regluarly. But as far as Christ being related to their lives; this they do not recognize. A young woman at the Newport Folic Festival was asked if she felt there was any relationship between Christ and life. She replied, "No! I ve gone to church since I was a kid." This is typical. And I'm afraid it's typical of many Christians. Some of us have not related Christ to our lives. We are very fortunate to be attending a school that is vigilant to Christ and His work throughout the wortd. This can be easily seen in the S. M. F. program. Emphasis is on the <needs and actions of missions.

Covenant takes a complete chapel s e r vice once a month and dedicates it solely to m issions. There is hardly a day that slips by without a group of students getting together and praying for the a ecific needs dedicated C hristians have. 7/e as soldiers for Christ must never faint from the massive problems throughout the world. We alone know Christ. And we alone can relate Him to tiie world and to our lives. And because we can live in Christ, we can nave victory. Bill Ivlahlow, Jr. For over a week, the lounge copy of Life magazine has been missing from the lounge. This periodical, as well as Snorts Illustrated, is provided by the Student Council for the benefit of all students. It would be much appreciated if the person who removed the Life magazine from the lounge would return it as soon as possible. And it would also be appreciated if students would be considerate enough to leave these magazines in_the lounge so that everyone may benefit from them. File Student Council It lias been suggested that perhaps the Ctudent Council needs to resuscitate its suggestion box (for the benefit of those who don't know who their class representatives are). It has been decided that the mail box for room 253 the Student Council room, will be desij nated as this suggestion box. Students are invited to offer their suggestions concerning rules, activities, etc., written legibly, addressed to the Student Council, and placed in box 253 These suggestions, in order for any action to be taken, must be signed (that's to discourage wise-guys), by the w riter, although he or she may remain anonymous (except to the perse who first reads the suggestion) if he oi she so desires. These suggestions wl be presented to the Student Council anc appropriate action will be taken. The Student Coungtt VISITORS WELCOME! Do lyou want to win friends (the busine manager) and influence people (your parents)? Then encourage relatives to inhabit our guest rooms here on campu during their visits. Covenant room costs are notably lower than any of the surrounding motel rate s even in offseason! Covenant charges $4.00 per person for a double room, $5.00 for a single room and $1.00 for guests staying in me students^ own room s. These meager figures may be contrasted to $10.00 for a double room and $12.00 fo twin at one neighborhood motel, $7.00 double and $0.00 twin at a second

nearby accommodation, and $9.00 double and $7.00 single at still another. The frugal student should also consider gas and costs in traveling from the college to various motels and valuable time lost in commuting which could be spent receiving parental advice on all problems. Ail factors considered, students are urged to consider having parents and friends live on campus during their visits. TUCK SHOPPE out. He wrote some good children's stories, too.
