Luke-John: Two Interpretations of Jesus Luke John: The Gospel According to Luke & John NT219 Lesson 01 of 03 Listening Guide This Listening Guide is designed to help you ask questions and take notes on what you re learning. The process will accomplish two things: first, it will help process the information in the lecture by keeping your mind engaged with the material. Second, it will allow you to collect your notes in one place for a summary of the lesson s content. If you choose to do additional study or want to teach the material to others, you will have a thorough set of notes to guide you. You may print these Listening Guide pages separately and complete the information as you read, listen to, or watch the lessons. Or as an alternative, you can fill in the fields in this digital version and save to your computer once you are finished. I. Gospel of Luke A. Theology [1] What aspects of Jesus shine through clearly? Include both parts of Blomberg s statement here. Jesus, indeed His. [2] Name a few of the people (or kinds of people) who Blomberg named that Jesus ministered to. [3] Name a few of the women Luke pointed out to us. [4] Who else did Jesus pay special attention to? [5] What word do commentators often link with Luke s gospel? NT219 Listening Guide 2015 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 1
B. Luke: The First Christian Historian [6] Why is Luke different as a historian than Matthew and Mark? [7] What did Luke do at the beginning of his gospel that was unique to him? [8] What did Luke do that gives the sense that the church may be around for a while? C. Distinctive Themes in Luke [9] What are a few of the distinctive themes in Luke? D. Luke and Acts [10] Who wrote the New Testament book of Acts? [11] What was the Apostle Paul s condition when Acts ended? [12] When did Luke probably write the book of Acts? E. Date and Authorship of Luke [13] What is the probable date of Acts writing? [14] How about Luke s Gospel? NT219 Listening Guide 2015 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 2
[15] What significant event occurred in 70 A.D.? [16] In your opinion, how does the fact of the 70 A.D. event inform us about the date when Acts was written? [17] What do we learn about Luke from Acts? F. Audience and Purpose of Luke [18] What may be true of Luke s audience in addition to the fact that they were Gentiles? [19] What did Luke do that neither Matthew nor Mark did? [20] What, in a single statement, was Luke s purpose for writing his gospel? [21] On what did Luke base the facts he stated in his gospel? [22] What does Luke s gospel designed to do? [23] Who was Theophilus? NT219 Listening Guide 2015 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 3
G. Structure of Luke [24] What sort of progression do we see in Luke s account that is more unified than in the other synoptics? II. Gospel of John [25] What does Blomberg tell us about John here? A. Theology of John [26] Where did John state the purpose of his gospel? [27] What are the two statements in that purpose? [28] What do some of John s strongest and most explicit statements say about Jesus? [29] What is involved in John s introduction of the Holy Spirit as a Paraclete? [30] What words recur frequently in John? B. Uniqueness of John [31] What was believed about John s gospel for many years that it was well away from what? [32] What trouble did Gnostics of John s day have with Jesus? NT219 Listening Guide 2015 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 4
[33] How does John 1:14 address that trouble? C. Authorship of John [34] Which John does Church history favor? D. Structure of John [35] The first half of John focuses on [36] The second half of the gospel then turns to Reflection Record one new fact or insight you discovered in this lesson. Application Think for a minute or two about John s claim that Jesus is actually God and that he became human so he could die in your place. When you pray to God, do you ever think of how much He must love you? Read John 3:16-18 a few times and let the truth of Jesus mission sink in. Take a few minutes to reflect on your view of Jesus. Is He God in your life? Do you and honor and worship Him? So you follow His teaching? Talk to Him for a few minutes and tell Him exactly what you think of Him.
