PRINCIPLES OF PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE Courtesy to all One item at a time Majority rule Respect the rights of the minority Justice for all Partiality for none For us as Presbyterians, parliamentary law is a tool we use which is a servant to our theological understanding of the purpose of a governing body: to seek God s will for our actions in the world, as we witness to our faith in Jesus Christ. - from Parliamentary Procedures in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by Marianne L. Wolfe.
HISTORY OF TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, DAYTON, OHIO Trinity United Presbyterian Church began in 1948 when two faithful Christians, Mrs. Isabelle Threlkeld and Mrs. Mary Robinson led a cloud of believers to persuade the Presbyterian Board of American Missions of the Presbyterian Church of North America to award the establishment of a church at the Fifth Street YMCA, Dayton, Ohio. Rev. James I. Davis of Henderson, North Carolina was called as the first Missionary pastor. Rev. Davis was serving as pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, Chase City, Virginia. He accepted the call and relocated to Dayton with this lovely wife Katherine. Rev. Davis vision was to provide a place of worship for all persons seeking the Word of God and where the Holy Spirit could be felt by all who serve a Living God. Opening worship services for the Mission Church were held on Sunday afternoon, November 21, 1948 in the DeSoto Bass auditorium. Dr. A. K. Steward from the Presbyterian Board of American Missions was the keynote speaker with a musical performance rendered by the Witherspoon Church choir. Several provisional session members attended from sister Presbyterian congregations; Elder Roy Kelly of Corinth Boulevard United Presbyterian Church and Elder Dr. Thomas Bruce of College Hill United Presbyterian Church. On December 19, 1948, six parishioners signed the Church Charter Roll and by September 25, 1949, a total of forty charter member names were ascribed. The first Communion Service was conducted on Sunday, January 30, 1950 and the first Congregational meeting was held on September 25th. In 1952, the property on the corner of Fleetfoot Street and Lakeview Avenue was purchased to become the new church site. Ground breaking services were held November 2, 1952 and on April 12, 1953 the cornerstone was laid for the new building. A Dedication Ceremony was held on June 28, 1953 with Dr. J. K. Leitch, Associate Secretary of the Board of American Missions as the keynote speaker. Trinity Church grew and prospered under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Dr. James I. Davis and became self-supporting on New Year Day This milestone culminated with the installation of Rev. James I. Davis as the first pastor of Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Great periods of growth and prosperity for the Church were witnessed over the next thirty years. Our founding father, Rev. Dr. James I. Davis gave God 44 years of faithful and dedicated service before retiring on February 1, He departed this life on December 29, Following Rev. Davis retirement in 1993, Brother Ril Beatty served as the interim ministerial seminary student while a Pastoral Search Committee was formed. The Committee completed an in-depth candidate search and on March 1, 1994, Rev. Ivan Wayne Lowery of North Carolina was called to be the new pastor of the Word and Sacrament at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Rev. Lowery pastured Trinity Church for the next ten years retiring in September Following Rev. Lowery s departure, Rev. Johnny Merritt served as Interim Pastor until May During his tenure at Trinity Church, Pastor Merritt provided a spiritual ministry to the congregation based on Scripture, promoting Black culture and expressing the realities of life. His messages were inspirational, thought provoking, seeped in Black culture and timely in purpose. During 2006, the Rev. Dr. Lutrelle D. Rainey, a native of Virginia became the new Shepherd for Trinity Church. Pastor Rainey was a strong proponent of the writings of the prophet Micah, a contemporary of Isaiah, who lived and preached during the 8 th century before the birth of Jesus Christ. He proposed that Yahweh/God requires of us to be fair in our dealings with one another; to be just as we treat and deal with others and to be merciful in our daily walk and talk and lastly to live humbly with our God. He concluded with may the peace, love and righteousness of God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Precious Holy Spirit be yours today and forever. Rev. Rainey retired from the ministry of Trinity Church in February Over the next three years, God placed within our midst gifted men and women of the Cloth to spiritually inspire and guide His people. They exhilarated our congregation, shed light on the Living Word and strengthened our faith in God. After an arduous search, Trinity Church elected the Rev. Ronald P. Lawrence on August 11, 2013 and on September 8 th he was officially installed as the spiritual leader of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Rev. Lawrence is a preacher who saturates his sermons with the Word of God bringing pure and sweet manna to the hearers. Rev. Lawrence also believes that the Word of God gives one inspiration to preach so that those who are hungry are fed, so those whose souls are troubled are given peace and so those who live by faith are enriched with the Holy Spirit. The mission of Trinity Church is to bring souls to Christ by proclaiming the Good News of God s Salvation and promoting diversity in its ministries. The distinctive purple doors are always open to the public warmly welcoming visitors to quietly enter the sanctuary and be awed with its beauty and serenity, for the Spirit of God is in this place. Today, Trinity Church remains a beacon light and safe haven for all seeking God s Word.

COMMITTEE ON MINISTRY September 8, 2015 For Action (from the Administrative Commission for Church Separations): Motion 1: The Presbytery of the Miami Valley makes the following findings of fact regarding its mission and that of the Somerville Community Church: 1. The Presbytery of the Miami Valley finds that the congregation of the Somerville Community Church of Somerville, Ohio (previously known as the Somerville Presbyterian Church) has clearly and repeatedly expressed its desire and intention to withdraw from its association with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and to withdraw from membership within the Presbytery of the Miami Valley most recently in a unanimous congregational vote on June 28, 2015 ratifying the Covenant of Gracious Separation contained herein. 2. The Presbytery of the Miami Valley recognizes that all property held by or for a congregation is held in trust for the use and benefit of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and further recognizes its responsibility to steward all property and resources for its mission and ministry. 3. The Presbytery of the Miami Valley in adopting the enclosed Covenant of Gracious Separation takes due consideration of the value of the property of Somerville Community Church; the financial needs of the Somerville Community Church, The Presbytery of the Miami Valley, and The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.); the potential financial and relational costs of litigation; and, the spiritual needs of both the Somerville Presbyterian Church and the Presbytery of the Miami Valley. Rationale: These proposed findings of fact are provided to comply with the requirements for conveyance of property specified in Tom v. Presbytery of San Francisco, GA PJC Remedial Case
Motion 2: The Presbytery of the Miami Valley dissolves the Somerville Community Church pursuant to the following Covenant of Gracious Separation and ratifies that Covenant presented below: A COVENANT OF GRACIOUS SEPARATION BETWEEN THE SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY CHURCH AND THE PRESBYTERY OF THE MIAMI VALLEY In recognition of our mutual desire to further the peace, unity, and purity of the larger church, the living body of Christ, and to fulfill our respective roles and responsibilities towards our Presbytery, Church and congregation, we, the Presbytery of the Miami Valley, and The Somerville Presbyterian Church of Somerville, Ohio (formerly known as The Somerville Presbyterian Church) enter into this Covenant of Gracious Separation, recognizing the end of our denominational affiliation and covenanting not to pursue legal action against the other. ARTICLE I In furtherance of this covenant, the Presbytery of the Miami Valley acknowledges that The Somerville Community Church as a congregation has sought to remove itself from the Presbytery of the Miami Valley and to end its relationship as a congregation within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the bonds between The Somerville Community Church and the Presbytery (and through the Presbytery, its relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Pursuant to this understanding, the Presbytery of the Miami valley by ratification of this agreement dissolves The Somerville Community Church as a congregation within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and a member congregation of this Presbytery effective the date of the ratification of this Covenant by the Presbytery of the Miami Valley. The Presbytery agrees, for purposes of the civil law of Ohio, that the dissolution of The Somerville Community Church as a congregation within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) does not dissolve The Somerville Community Church as a not-for-profit corporation in the state of Ohio. ARTICLE II Further, the Presbytery, based upon its discernment of its mission, for itself and as the council of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) relinquishes its claims upon the real and personal property held by The Somerville Community Church and any beneficial interests therein. As The Somerville Community Church believes that title is currently in the name of The Somerville
Community Church or its predecessor organization, the Somerville Presbyterian Church, and it shall be an on-going Christian church regardless of its denominational affiliation, The Somerville Community Church, does not seek any further transfer of title to this real property other than the assurances given in this Covenant. ARTICLE III The Somerville Community Church shall make no claims of membership in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and shall be entitled to no benefits of association with the Presbytery of the Miami Valley or the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). ARTICLE IV For historical purposes, complete copies of the church records (baptism, membership, ordination verification, Session and Congregational Meeting Minutes) from the entire period of time that the church was part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) or its predecessors shall be delivered to Presbytery representatives at the time of the signing of this Covenant. Original Records and are understood and agreed to be owned and retained by the congregation. ARTICLE V Members of The Somerville Community Church who wish to remain as members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) shall be under the care of the Presbytery of the Miami Valley. ARTICLE VI In further consideration of this Covenant, The Somerville Community Church shall provide at the signing of this agreement the Presbytery of the Miami Valley the sum of Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,50) given to The Presbytery of the Miami Valley s small church ministry fund. This contribution is inclusive of all obligations owed to the Presbytery of the Miami Valley including, but not limited to, per capita payments that are now or may be due.
This serves as a written covenant agreement between Miami Valley Presbytery and The Somerville Community Church and is understood to be binding on any succeeding governing body. We pray that each other go forth in peace, honoring Christ. Attested: THE SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY CHURCH CLERK OF SESSION DATE THE PRESBYTERY OF THE MIAMI VALLEY MODERATOR DATE STATED CLERK DATE
