Religious Studies 2016 Course Outline Level 1
Welcome to Year 11 Religious Studies Some thoughts about being a Streamer. St Patrick s College, Silverstream should have a culture based on the intrinsic dignity of the human person Fr Bernie Ryan, SM A New Zealand Marist priest who had been the Superior General of the Society of Mary. I would like to see the students of St Patrick s College, Silverstream known for their commitment to being disciples of Jesus Christ Cardinal John Dew, Archbishop of Wellington You will find life by giving life, hope by giving hope, and love by giving love. God is love. Pope Francis The principle element in school is to learn to be magnanimous to have a big heart, to have greatness of mind, to have great ideas, to desire to great things, to respond to what God asks of us, and to do well the little things of each day with a great heart open to God and to others. General Information Pope Francis There are some things about Year 11 Religious Studies that will be familiar to you: We will have class liturgies. We will have a retreat. We will begin each class with a prayer or mediation. However, some things will be a little different: You will have two 90 minute lessons each week. We will cover four main topics, sexuality and careers. You will be assessed against NCEA achievement standards for Religious Studies and NCEA unit standards for careers.
Your Religious Studies Teachers Department Leaders Director of Religious Studies: Mr J Greaney, Assistant: Mr K Havell RE Teachers: Mr L Alosio Ms J Bryan Mr C Fouhy, Mr M Savali Mr M White Mrs A Whiteford Mrs P Wilson Mr P Woods, Spiritual Encounters available Class prayer and mediation Tutor Mass Class Mass Marian prayer Weekly Benediction Prayer walk. Reconciliation Sacramental Programme. Retreats A retreat is an opportunity to spend time outside the normal classroom environment to pray and reflect. It is a chance to connect with God and become aware of his presence in our world, in our lives and the lives of others. Justice Focus: In 2016 we want to focus on those issues facing people as they struggle to live. During Lent we will support the Caritas project and throughout the year we would hope to support the College s projects. More information will be given at ranks.
Ready for Learning! Have a 2B5 or 2B8 for your notes. BYOD This will make your learning a lot easier! Bring a good supply of pens. Really engage in your lessons. Take care of any hand outs you are given Use the resources respectfully. How can I contribute to our learning? Share any media you have which will enhance our learning Get into your google classroom. Contribute to any google documents. Be positive INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES 1. You need to know the address of your Religious Studies teacher: greaneyj@stream.school.nz bryanj@stream.school.nz alosiol@stream.school.nz savalim@stream.school.nz whiteforda@stream.school.nz havellk@stream.school.nz wilsonp@stream.school.nz fouhyc@stream.school.nz whitem@stream.school.nz woodsp@stream.school.nz
2. You need to join your google classrooms as soon as possible: (here is the Year 12 example) Your teacher will take you on a tour of your virtual classroom. 3. You really need to monitor your school Gmail account on a regular basis. We will also run some input on this!
4. You need to gain a working knowledge of google docs, forms, calendar etc. 5. Using ipads and desktops is also going to be part of the fun! AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF YEAR 11 RELIGIOUS STUDIES Students will deepen their understanding and appreciation of the Catholic Church Students will regularly participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular areas around Religious Studies including retreats and class liturgies that aim to strengthen our Faith. Students will aim to achieve 18 Credits Strive for Merit and Excellence in all assessments. Gain credits in literacy in some RST achievement standards. ASSESSMENT In class there will be formative assessments to help you build your knowledge and understanding. At the end of the topic there will be a summative assessment worth 6 credits. End of topic assessments will use a variety of assessment techniques. If you are ill or required to attend another school activity you must provide a Doctor s Certiificate or school permission to complete the assessment at a later date. Moderation: A sample of work will be bench marked first. Assessment will be then divided up and marked by the teachers of Year 11. Those scripts will be verified by another teacher before the final grade is communicated. This is to ensure that marks meet the requirements of the standard. If you wish to appeal a grade you must first speak to your Religious Studies teacher first and give reasons for your appeal. If you are not happy with the decision you must fill out the appeal form available at the reception desk and pass it to your teacher within 3 days of your initial conversation. The DRS will respond within 3 days. You have another week to appeal this decision to the person with overall responsibility for assessments. (Mr Bowles) The decision reached by them will be final. There are not opportunities for re-submission or re-assessment in Religious Studies at this time. In order to gain Merits and Excellence in Religious Studies you need to show breath and/or depth in your understanding. Sometimes you will also be expected to write about the significance and implications of questions. Solo taxonomy is a good guide. Also use evidence from Scripture, Tradition and Church teaching in your responses.
