1 Fall 2017 Fall 2017 We are Family! Carmen Nagel, LWML Oregon District President At a recent meeting in St. Louis, the hotel where my husband and I stayed, two family reunions were gathering. Both of these reunions had 150+ family members who came from all over the United States. It was pure joy watching these family members as arms reached out in love to greet each other. Second and third generations were shy and more hesitant as they met new members of their family tree, and conversations of do you remember flowed. The song We are Family (written in the 1970 s) kept going through my head. A portion of the lyrics is I got all my sisters with me, We are family! Get up everybody and sing. I wanted to get up, sing, dance and become a member of these joyful families. In searching the Scriptures for verses about family these following words illustrated the meaning of family togetherness, importance, strength, first, problems, conflict, and above all LOVE. At a recent LWML convention committee meeting, the word family was used several times. The women described how LWML is their family who is always there in times of suffering a loss, an illness, disasters, or the need to listen by one who will surround and hold you close in prayer. The LWML family is a strong body, bound by the love of our Lord. We come together as family in the name of the Lord, celebrating what He has done for all, and working to serve HIM through His Word and our actions. A favorite worship song is Brothers & Sisters in Christ, words & music by Terry Dittmer. Some of the key words are Sing! Lift up! Brought together by grace! Gathered! Assembled as one! Celebrating! These are actions of the family of Christ. Fall is a time of nesting and settling back into a routine. As recorded in Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted. Who is your familie*? Who can join your familia*? Every famiglia* member has duties. What are yours? There is a right time for everything! All in God s time! Celebrate your familj*! We are FAMILY, get up everybody and sing and praise our Lord! You, dear Sisters and Brothers, are my family! *{Familie (German); Familia (Spanish); Famiglia (Italian); familj (Swedish} Volume #16, Issue #4, Fall Oregon Leaguer is published quarterly by Lutheran Women in Mission (Oregon District), an auxiliary organization of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
2 Christian Life/Exuberant Joy A few weeks ago during one of his sermons Pastor mentioned the words exuberant joy. As soon I heard these words a vision of Chance, my 7 year old lab popped into my head. If I had to describe Chance the words exuberant joy would sum him up. He is the happiest dog I have ever owned. In July my husband and I took both of our labs to Yachats, Oregon for vacation. Imagine the joy of seeing your two labs run on the beach. They chased each other for miles. They charged into the ocean s waves. They stopped and sniffed everything that the tide had washed in. And Chance could barely contain his emotions of joy. His facial expression was truly beaming from ear to ear the entire trip. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to feel this kind of joy? To just let yourself run free in life and soak in every moment of every day. Can you imagine what that would feel like? Isn t that what God has to offer us? Shouldn t we be so filled with God that we can barely contain Him? Shouldn t we want to run on the beach flying on the wings of angels reaching to the heavens with thanksgiving and awe? Stopping to touch every life. Sharing what God has gloriously given each of us. Reaching forward and never looking back with regret. Beaming from ear to ear with God. Chance teaches me life lessons every day. Maybe he s one of God s angels wrapped up in brown fur. I pray that you have someone, or something in your life that shows you how to live with exuberant joy. We have an awesome God. What are you waiting for? "You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands." Isaiah 55:12 Deb Weaver The Christian Life Committee prepares a monthly Christian Life Notes publication. This is prepared as a personal resource and also as possible devotional ideas for your societies use. You can find the Christian Life Notes on the orlwml.org web site. Special Gifts Fund Oregon District The Special Gifts Fund of the Oregon District LWML is a wonderful way to honor a loved one, remember a special event in ones family (birthday, thank you gift) and as living memorial gifts for those whom the Lord has called home. These gifts are what makes it possible to offer scholarship aid to our young women in the Oregon District LWML who are preparing to serve the Lord throughout our LCMS churches, schools and ministries. Without your donations this could not be possible. Thank you for your love gifts! Special Gifts Fund has received Memorial Gifts since Spring: In loving memory of Robyn Reck-Fichter Robyn is the precious daughter of our own Pat Reck, (The author of our Hug in A Mug monthly devotional). Donna Boyd, Special Gifts Committee Chair Proverbs 4:23 I have been spending a fair amount of time lately pondering all of the terrible disasters that have happened or are ongoing around me here in Oregon. As I think of each one, the fires in our forests, the destruction of beloved landmarks, the lack of water, and other heart wrenching events, I cannot help but hear the Word of God from Proverbs 4:23, which was the focus of our recent LWML retreat. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. As much as all of our hearts ache about the events going on around us, and the terrible toll it takes on all things, God again reminds us that from that same heart comes life itself. The heart is a fragile organ in our bodies. It contains everything we need to continue to function. But not only a physical life, but also a life of faith. We carry in our hearts the faith we have in Jesus, our Lord and Savior. It is in our hearts that we confess our sinfulness and give our confession. It is from our heart that we receive the life of forgiveness from the body and blood of Christ. Satan is well aware of this, and is continually attacking it with doubt, pride and other sinful thoughts and deeds. But the writer of the Proverbs reminds us to keep our hearts with all vigilance. What does this mean? Well, for one thing, it means to protect it. How do we protect it? By the word of God and through His sacraments. We watch over our heart of life by spending time with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We share our life with our neighbors, family, and strangers our Lord puts in our path day by day. As we prepare for this coming fall season, may we always be reminded that from our heart comes the good news of salvation, through grace, in faith, in Christ. Keep watch! 4 JARGON The language used for a particular activity or by a particular group of people. Miriam Webster Dictionary All of us at one time or another encountered jargon. It seems like every vocation has their own form. To adapt to this phenomenon when we change vocations or encounter a different one from our own, we must learn their way of communicating. It is like learning a foreign language in some cases. Can you remember being in a situation where shop-talk was being used and you didn t get the message? I am not mechanically inclined, so when I have my car at the mechanic shop and he uses all the car words like u joints ( I probably spelled it wrong too), or differential etc. my head spins. The Police Departments have some codes that we learned from TV shows like 10-4 and others. My brother used to volunteer with the police department in our home town and he started to speak their jargon to us at home and we did not understand what he was saying. It was all in code using numbers and letters. My teen-aged son had a scanner in his room and got pretty proficient in understanding and speaking their language. I ve been in the medical field for a good many years before retiring and some of their jargon you can pick up from TV shows like STAT. Serious information is communicated between physicians, ancillary services and patients. Shop talk is not appropriate when giving medical information to those outside the medical field. Many physicians today will give you a print out of the office visit. Some need interpretation from a clinically trained friend. In these cases, and many not mentioned here, the jargon is meant to be used within that group of people. It is important that everyone on the team use the proper language for that group. Let s take, for an example, the alphabet. The military has one set, the first responders to disasters use another one; and then there is our own individual quickly made up on the spot. Apple (A), Boy (B) and so on. It gets real fun when you get to the q, v, w, x, y and z. These are used for spelling street names and sir names. I remember some good advice that a learned speaker gave at a symposium for health care workers. I will have to paraphrase it because I can t remember his exact words. But it went something like this, - All of us have our specialized jargon in our professions, and it makes us sound very smart, it garners a degree of respect for the person when we use the language outside of our vocations in the public arena. People may be impressed with your talk, however, they won t understand what you are trying to tell them. (continued next column) Open Hearts The new LWML logo makes a statement that as servants of our Lord He has opened our hearts to see, to hear, and to share His love. Christ's death on the cross opened the kingdom of heaven for all people. The heart of God has won for all who believe the forgiveness we need through the blood of Christ. In 1 John 4:7 "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." By His guiding, the heart of the LWML continues to be open in love for all around us... in our church, in our neighborhoods, and throughout the world. Open our hearts, Lord, that we will joyfully serve You and others wherever You lead us. Carmen Nagel LWML Oregon District President (continued) Do you want to sound super intelligent or do you want them to understand the message you are giving them? As we grow in our walk with Jesus we learn to speak Bible speak as I ve heard it from nonbelievers. We want to speak in common and plain terms that Jesus loves them. We can use the above principle when we share the good news with others unfamiliar with Christianity. We Christians have our own jargon too though we might not look at it that way. When talking to non-christians we may use words like reborn, sacramental, Liturgical church, the Creeds, Christology, and apostolic. We understand those when they are spoken; they perhaps will not and may be overwhelmed. There are many words that we speak amongst ourselves that would confuse nonbelievers or even a newly baptized Christian. We need to be considerate and use simpler words to share God s message and our own faith in Jesus promises; His forgiveness. Jesus spoke in simple parables to his disciples and then explained the meaning of His lesson that the parable is presenting. He used story items that were familiar to the listener, like a vineyard, a lost coin and even the widow s mite. Let us take His example and find words easier to understand that His message of forgiveness and salvation through Him may be delivered in a manner that is understandable to the listener. 5 Mission Servants Activity of the Month October Make Christmas Cards for Refugees Zone News Hope for the Holidays: Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering (Hebrews 13:2 3). Christmas should be a time of joyful celebration with family and friends. Yet, for millions of refugees and migrants, forced to flee their homelands in search of safety and protection, the joy announced by the birth of our Savior this Christmas will seem very far away. This winter, bring joy and hope to our brothers and sisters isolated in immigration detention through writing and decorating holiday cards in English and Spanish. Go! Gospel Outreach Opportunity This week pray for our missionaries and send them a card of encouragement. Put a donation in your Mite Box to support LWML Mission Grants. 6 PLANNING/VISIONING Some of us are planners and some of us go with the flow. Often, we all wait for inspiration. Who/ what are we waiting on? As Christian women, most of us will probably say that it is when we are reading and studying God s Word, or hearing His Word in a sermon or from a speaker, or when listening to a favorite hymn or Christian song, that the Holy Spirit brings thoughts to our mind. Thoughts, which connected with the Word, become great ideas to start our planning. At our conventions and retreats we are blessed to have motivational speakers and inspirational Bible studies. We return home on a high, determined to take action, - to follow through on what we ve learned. Then we get into the daily routine of life, and our good intentions get pushed aside. Jesus Christ Above All! How do we follow through on what was such a highlight for LWML convention attendees in June in Albuquerque? An idea! Let s continue to expand on this theme for the coming biennium. Could our Zone rallies and retreats be venues for helping us learn, through God s Word and various service projects, ways we can daily keep our Savior, Jesus Christ Above All in our lives? WOW! What changes/transformations could we expect to see in our relationship with our Savior, in the opportunities He will give us to: Share the Gospel Serve our Neighbor Welcome Strangers Care for the Down-trodden Help those effected by natural disasters, like Harvey and Irma Impact our community for Jesus Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we know that You tell us, Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it. We know that hearing involves listening, but it also means taking it to heart. Keeping Your Word means obeying It, but to obey we need the leading of Your Holy Spirit in understanding our justification and following through on all You tell us about living the sanctified life becoming transformed into the image of Your Son. Only when Jesus is Above All in our lives, will this start taking place. May it be so. In His Precious Name we pray, Amen. Terry Putnam, Planner/Visioning Committee LEADER DEVELOPMENT WELCOMES THREE NEW ZONE PRESIDENTS TO BREAKOUT SESSION Though their faces may not be new to the most of us, three women are wearing Zone President hats this fall: Carolyn Nelson, Southern; Barb Campbell, Myrtlewood, and Betsy Ablott, Interstate. 8 JESUS CHRIST ABOVE ALL Convention Banner designed by Carol Harms of Grace Molalla and constructed by Barbara Northrup of Eagle Point The goal for 2017 International LWML Convention in Albuquerque states: Empowered by the Holy Spirit, through Word and Sacrament I will proclaim JESUS CHRIST above all. This banner centers on what Jesus Christ has given to us through His blessings and promises. First and foremost Jesus has given His life upon the cross (red crosses on His hands to symbolize his suffering) that we may live with Him to all eternity (circle shape of the halo). Jesus is pictured as the risen, victorious Lord dressed in white and wearing a crown (King of Kings). The halo stands for both eternity and holiness. Christ has forgiven all sins and thus clothes His children with white robes to cover their sins and thus be holy in the sight of the Father. St. John tells us In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. The banner shows His creation...where we live in 2017 in Oregon to be specific. The Portland outline along the rivers on one side of the globe and on the other wide is Mt. Hood and countryside bordering a golden yellow strip of land (symbolizes the harvest as in Luke 10:2 and Matthew 9:38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. ). This is the mission of LWML. Jesus Christ is the Word through which the Holy Spirit calls, enlightens, and sanctifies through the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. Christ is the Light of the World (flame) but also the Holy Spirit (dove) was present in tongues of fire (flame) on Pentecost. Baptism is shown with the streams of water descending from the Christ figure on the cross to the earth below. The waters shown on the globe portion contain three crosses representing being baptized in the name of the Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit (dove) gives the gift of faith in Jesus Christ and we have the forgiveness earned for us by our crucified (cross) and risen Lord. In the water is a fish. Jesus told His disciples that they would become fishers of men in Matthew 4:19 and Mark 1:17. The fish also symbolizes the command by Jesus in Matthew 28:19, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Another way to connect with the water is to look at the story of the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:14 which talks about a living water, but whoever drinks of the water I give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The top line of the water connects to Jesus name The Sacrament of the Altar is symbolized at the base of the cross. Jesus offers His body (wheat) and His blood (grapes) for the forgiveness of sins and strengthening of faith.. The elements of a design also emphasizes the theme. The body of Christ becomes the cross shape itself. The flame is central to Christ s body to draw attention to His being the Light of the world. Jesus Christ gave The Holy Spirit as a Comforter to the disciples. So also the Holy Spirit is connected to us (descending into our lives) through Baptism and Communion...our Comforter. The Convention s Theme, Jesus Christ above all, is separated from the busy-ness of the design on the left side. This gives it space to boldly pronounce the message. Thus with all the gifts of faith, forgiveness, and eternal life we hold our Savior above all else in our lives as we reach out to others in mission and ministry. The Fall District LWML Retreat found 71 women of the district delighting in studying God's word, sharing songs of praise, fun fellowship times, enjoying the pleasant setting and excellent meals offered at the Macleay Christian Center. We thank the Lord for women who attended and the blessings we all received. Guarding our hearts, the Christian Life Committee - Debbie Weaver, Pat Wetzel, Judy Chase and Anita Eller.
