Opening Worship P We begin our opening devotion in the Name of our God in Whom we are baptized: in the Name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit! C Amen! P Concerning the Law and Gospel of God s Word, Martin Luther once wrote: "If you are a (believer) of grace, then (believe) a true and not a pretended grace; C And, if grace is true, you must bear a true and not a pretend sin. P God does not save people who are pretend sinners. C Be a sinner and sin boldly, but believe and rejoice in Christ even more boldly. P O Lord God... C It is not easy for us to admit that we are sinful people and the specific ways in which we have broken Your Commandments and gone our own ways. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us that we may boldly confess our sinfulness for which we deserve nothing but to be separated from You now and forever. And move us by Your Spirit to believe and rejoice in Jesus Christ, the Savior Promised, even more boldly. For His sake, we are bold to ask for forgiveness and new life now and forever. In the Name of Jesus Christ we boldly pray. Amen. Hymn Lutheran Service Book Page

Public domain P C Jesus is the Savior promised by God in the Covenant. He kept all of God s Law perfectly for us. He then sacrificed His righteous life for the forgiveness of all of our sins. He rose again from the dead for our salvation. In Him we are right with God and our souls will truly live now and forever. As a Called and Ordained Servant of His Church, I forgive you all of your sins in the Name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit! Amen! Devotion A Mighty Fortress Psalm 46 Response C A mighty fortress is our God! P The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress! C God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. P Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea... C... though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling! A mighty fortress is our God! P There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High! C God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns! P The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice, the earth melts! C The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress! A mighty fortress is our God! P Come, behold the works of the Lord, how He has brought desolations on the earth! C He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots with fire! P Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! C The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. A mighty fortress is our God! 3 Page

THE RHYDDERICH HAEL RECORDER CONSORT, Compangnia Del Gelatio Grande, was formed almost 30 years ago as a part of the Society for Creative Anachronsim (SCA) for people who love to study and perform the music of the Renaissance and Middle Ages. Performers include Rhonda Kolokowsky, Karen Ehrlich, Stephen Church, and Carol Waddell-Sheets (director). The Consort rehearses once a week and performs several times a year. Their performances try to recreate the atmosphere of the time by using period instrumentation and costumes. Martin Luther was an avid musician who played both the lute and the transverse flute. He enjoyed listening to a wide range of both secular and sacred music in his travels throughout Europe. The Consort will play a cross-section of the secular music that Martin Luther would have known and enjoyed. This music reflects the cosmopolitan nature of many of the 16th century European Courts. R The Carmina (Regensberg manuscript) is an anthology of French, Italian, and German pieces played at Wittenberg University in the mid-16 th century during Martin Luther s tenure. R The Consort collection includes works by several prominent composers, including Josquin Des Prez, who was one of Martin Luther s favorites. R The Susato Collection represents some of the different types of dances that were enjoyed at the time of Luther. Renaissance Feast Martin Luther is credited with nailing the Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, more commonly known as the 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg on October 31, This act ignited a series of events that changed the face of the world as it was then known in Western Europe, and introduced the German Reformation. So that we may all experience a bit of life as Luther would have known it, we present this evening, a renaissance feast that is typical of the time of Luther. The food represents what would have been available to Germans of Luther s time. And, as in Luther s time, no renaissance feast would be complete without entertainment joining us tonight are both Nels Ross and the Rhydderich Hael Recorder Consort, as well as a special appearance by Dr. Martin Luther himself! 8 Page

Opening of the Feast The Special Guest Dr. Martin Luther AS PORTRAYED BY THE REVEREND KARL HAEUSSLER Remarks and Introductions Hymn In 1541 the Turkish army was threatening to take Vienna. The German rulers called for special prayers for safety from these Islamic forces. Martin Luther responded to this request by writing the original German text, Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort for a prayer service in Wittenberg. Convinced that the church was threatened not only by the Turkish army of Sultan Suleiman but also by the Pope (who was doing everything he could to counteract the Reformation), Luther began his text as follows (English translation): Lord, keep us in thy Word and work, restrain the murderous Pope and Turk, who fain would tear from off thy throne, Christ Jesus, thy beloved Son. Sing verse 1 very slowly, as hymns were sung in our Lutheran churches before World War Two; verses 2 and 3 at the usual speed. 10 The Common Table Prayer Prayed in German by those who are able; then prayed in English by all Komm, Herr Jesu; sei unser Gast; Und segne, was Du uns bescheret hast. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus, be our Guest; And may Thy gifts to us be blessed. Amen. The First Remove Braised beef Roasted carrots Mushrooms cooked in butter The Second Remove Assorted bread Applebutter Quark (type of soft cheese) Liver pate Cheese tart Beet salad The Third Remove Breaded pork Cooked cabbage Applesauce Lentils Presentation of the Sublety Fancy foods which used lots of white sugar were extremely rare and expensive. Cooks who knew how to decorate with sugar were highly sought after. Even a small Luther Rose, made of glass-like colored sugar, surrounded by more colored sweetness, as you will see tonight, would have caused awe and astonishment. Service of the Sublety Assorted sweets and fruits 10 Page

Returning Thanks Luther s Small Catechism provides in part: after eating, they shall, in like manner, reverently and with folded hands say Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. His love endures forever. [He] gives food to every creature. He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call. His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor His delight in the legs of a man; the LORD delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love. (Ps. 136:1, 25; 147:9 11) Then shall be said the Lord s Prayer and the following: We thank You, Lord God, heavenly Father, for all Your benefits, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. Lutheran Service Book 805 Closing Hymn The Doxology Public domain Conversation and Fellowship Thank you for coming. We hope you enjoyed your time with us. 11 Page

Many Thanks Thanks go to Wilma Lass, whose vision for a banquet and entertainment of the time of Luther, was the catalyst for the event this evening. To our kitchen crew also goes our appreciation. Our creative cooks are members of the Society of Creative Anachronsim ( SCA ), where they use Scanian names. Thanks go to More Nap Rhys, Sthurrim Caithnes, Rowena Caithnes and to Shannon and Moira Kauderer. Special thank you s go to the members of our host congregation, St. Paul, for their leadership in the today s events and to the members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church for their assistance and use of their facility. Grateful thanks go to our servers and to Zachary Will for the use of his tables. Today s Luther Talks and Renaissance Feast were presented in collaboration with the following Lutheran congregations along the Niagara River Crescent: Grace, Niagara Falls Holy Ghost, Bergholz Immanuel, Tonawanda St. John, North Tonawanda Benefitting... St. Mark, North Tonawanda St. Matthew, North Tonawanda St. Paul, North Tonawanda Trinity, Lockport The proceeds from this evening s dinner will benefit the Historical Society of North German Settlements in Western New York. The Society, active since August 1971, aims to preserve, research, and educate about the heritage of a large group of Prussians who came to the United States beginning in They were intent on worshipping in the Old Lutheran way and looking for a better life for themselves and their children. As part of that effort, it maintains a heritage museum, Das Haus, on its original site in the village of Bergholz. In the house are rooms devoted to the history of the migration, adaptations of the German life style to American customs, and life as it would have been lived about There is also a reproduction barn, Der Stall, which currently houses the Society s research library and is also used as storage for the many artifacts which the Society owns. In 2015, the Society added another building to the complex a re-constructed fachwerk (old European style) House/Barn using original hand hewn timber frame materials dating from Displays in the House/Barn include farming implements and artifacts depicting the home life of the first settlers of Bergholz.
