1 Sectarianism is not of Christ Session 3 - Chapter 3-4:13 3:1-4 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? For when one says, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos, are you not mere men? As Paul continues to address God s wisdom versus the world s, we are reminded again that he is addressing brethren. Yet they are acting like the world. A believer is indeed a new creation in Christ as Paul just said that we have the mind of Christ (:16) as believers and we also have the gift of the indwelling spirit, but we are not removed from the flesh and the world in this age and as such we are experiencing a process of sanctification. While Satan is the adversary he cannot be everywhere at once personally persuading each and every believer at all times. Each believer therefore has two very real and constant sources of influence to keep us functioning as those who are not of Christ. 1 - The flesh - While we await our redemption, our new man exists in the old container. Sin remains a reality that lurks in every fiber of our mortal being. Usually impulsive the flesh causes the believer to struggle with doing what is righteous and not doing what is sinful. Paul himself shared this struggle in his letter to the Romans: For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. (Rom 7:15-3) - The World - Under the influence of supernatural and natural rebellion, it is the collective thought of the whole world of sinners under the curse. A view of the world and way of thinking that is man centered and opposed to God, based on pride and lust. While the flesh tends to govern our impulsive sins, the influences the way we think and leads to our more calculated sin. Page 1

2 The more worldly we are in our thinking, the less we resemble Christ and then both impulsive and calculated sin become less resisted. Immaturity in a believer is based on selfishness. Since selflessness is most like Christ, selfishness is the most like the world. But it is not simply selflessness that is Christ-like, but being selfless as it pertains to the will of the Father. The Corinthian believers were seeking self importance by claiming to follow certain men that they had elevated to a position of importance that God had not intended, because it is Christ and His gospel that we are to boast in (1:30-31). When Paul first brought them the gospel, he gave them milk to drink. The gospel in its most simple form is that men are sinners condemned to hell who need to repent for the forgiveness of sins which is in Christ Jesus. But there are many deep doctrinal truths, solid food, that are all built on the foundation of the gospel, that immature or selfish believers cannot be taught. Paul in Romans 7 expressed his struggle with sin from a position of maturity. His sin maturity is what made him acutely aware of just how impulsive sin can be in the flesh. But the Corinthians were completely governed by their selfishness to the point that their mode of operation was no different than mere men. They were indistinguishable from the worlds way of thinking. God gives the increase, not man 3:5-9 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God s fellow workers; you are God s field, God s building. Just like the parable of the soils Paul recognizes that the soil has to be made fertile by the Lord in order for any work put forth by His servants to become fruitful (see Mat 9:38; Luk 10:; Rev 3:10). How does Paul view his work and the work of Apollos as it pertains to the belief of the Corinthians? The true church is an organism that is caused by and sustained by the Lord. Within it all are one in terms of significance to its growth and function. Paul s Page

3 conclusion that neither the one who plants, nor the one who waters is anything is not to say that individual believers are worthless, rather that no one who is part of the organism of the church has anything to do with the actual growth of it. The mystery of a dead person coming to life in Christ is due to His power and will. Is the work of the laborer of no significance if God is the one who causes the growth? What is the basis on which believers will be rewarded? 3:10-17 Building on a proper foundation and a warning According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man s work. If any man s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. Paul identified himself as a wise master builder or the general contractor of the Corinthian church, by the grace of God. He was responsible for laying the foundation. He presented Christ and Him crucified in Corinth and as God added belief the church there was started. Others such as Apollos were blessed by God s grace to be able to build on that foundation. And what is the foundation that is laid? It is Jesus Christ. Jesus said: But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth (John 4:3,4). Unless an individual understands correctly who Jesus is, they have a foundation that is like sand and it is no foundation at all. So it is critical that the gospel of Jesus Christ be firmly in place before any legitimate work can be accomplished. Page 3

4 Each believer has been given the opportunity in some capacity to labor within the church. As such we build on the foundation of the gospel within the portion of the church that we have fellowship with. The work of each laborer is defined by two categories: 1 - Gold, silver, precious stones - Represent quality work pertaining to the discipleship of believers. We do not compete against other believers, but against the flesh and the world in a race to become more like Christ. Paul said to the Philippians: Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil 3:13,14) - Wood, hay, straw - Represent trivial work that is not based purely on a love for the Lord and His people but is work that is performed with less than godly motives. Christians do many things for selfish motives while the works themselves may not appear that way. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. ( Cor 5: 9,10) So Paul is not attempting to heap condemnation on the Corinthian believers, as all sin has been judged in Christ and no believer will ever be condemned. Rather he is admonishing them to remain focused on the fact that the Lord gives each believer an opportunity to invest in their eternal reward. That reward is based on our service with the Lords glory in mind. He is glorified when we are selfless toward the church. Further confirmation of this is in verses 14 and 15. After our work is tried by the fire of Christ s omniscience, whatever is left we will receive a reward. But even if the work is completely burned up, while loss of reward is suffered, eternal life remains. No unbeliever will ever stand at the judgement seat of Christ, rather the great white throne judgement awaits them (Rev 0: 11,1). What are some examples of each type of work Paul presents? Page 4

5 Finally Paul adds that anyone who seeks to destroy the temple of God (His church) God will destroy that individual. While the majority of Pauls admonishment has been to believers, he must include this here because there has always been and always will be wolves in sheeps clothing who care nothing about the flock while they appear to be shepherds: Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. (Acts 0:8-30) 3:18-3 Rejecting Worldly Wisdom Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, He is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS ; and again, THE LORD KNOWS THE REASONINGS of the wise, THAT THEY ARE USELESS. So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God. Continuing the thought of false teachers in the church who have confidence in themselves to bring about their desired results, influence and benefit, they need to repent and become nothing before men in order that Christ alone be glorified and His gospel go forth. Peter confronts Simon in the book of Acts in regards to this very self - deceiving worldly wisdom: Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles hands, he offered them money, saying, Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit. But Peter said to him, May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. (Acts 8:18-) Another example would be the judaizers who bewitched the Galatians and even Peter whom Paul had to rebuke. The Seven sons of Sceva from Acts 19 attempted to wield power they did not possess because they hadn t repented Page 5

6 of their sin and called on Christ to be saved. Paul warns Timothy of false teachers who seek to add to their following by tickling the ears of their audience rather than teaching sound doctrine (Ti 4:3,4). We are warned about those who would seek a position in the visible church for sordid gain (1Ti 3:8; 6:5; Tit 1:7,11; 1Pet 5:). Today s Christianity is flooded with such false teachers who through man - centered theology have sought to gain great fame and fortune using the name of Jesus to do so. They are wise in their own estimation, twisting God s Word and outright disobeying it in order to build up their own ego and economic position. Quoting Job 5:13 and Ps 94:11 Paul reminds the Corinthians that their allegiance to men is useless. Men can neither build the church nor tear it down. So then let no men boast in men he says. While the Lord deals individually with each believer and the body is made up of different parts (1Cor 1), we are all still one body and of equal value based on His calling and work. All things belong to you. As such we all belong to each other as true believers and all things belong to the church. Jesus is the inheritance of the saints and what He inherits in His kingdom we will as well. All is possible because of the power and will of God, not man. Only Stewards of the mysteries of God 4:1 Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Returning to the Corinthians view of the apostles and those under them who brought them the gospel, Paul provides the correct level of esteem to be applied by using the word servants. The Greek word used describes the under rower in a ship. The lowest grunt working to give the ship motion yet not recognized with any rank or esteem. The only purpose of the under rower is to labor for the benefit of the vessel and not with self promotion in mind. They were to be viewed only as stewards of the mysteries of God. They didn t each have there own version of some divine truth, they were unified in the same message and God called them to administer it. The master of a house would give certain men stewardship of the household and all that belonged to it for the proper carrying out of the functioning of the household. It could even include tending to the children, but all things were done to represent the lord of the house, not the steward. All believers have a stewardship given by God. To share the gospel with the Page 6

7 world and to serve the body of Christ. 4:-5 In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men s hearts; and then each man s praise will come to him from God. In the case of Paul, Apollos, Cephas and any of those whom God called to both establish (geographically) and then teach the church the truths of Christ, trustworthiness was required. The handling of the mysteries of God is far more significant than any earthly responsibility. It is important to keep in mind that Paul is not rejecting accountability. He is not saying that outward fruit should not be examined by the church or that individuals shouldn t examine themselves. What he is saying is that when it comes to discerning our true motives, the only opinion that matters is the Lord s who knows all things. Paul claims that he knows of no ulterior motives in his labors, but his perspective will not prevent his labor from being examined by the Lord. He is the one who will deal out reward or hold it back as the work is tested. We can discern the outward works of individuals using discernment as we are called to do, but as to the motives only God knows. The Standard 4:6-7 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other. For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? In the examples Paul used; a farmer (3:6-9), a builder (3:10-15) and a steward (4:1-5). Paul is teaching the Corinthians that he and Apollos (and any other laborer within the body) is only to be treated and regarded to the extent of what is written in God s word. He is not saying that the laborers are worthless. In fact Paul says that a laborer is worthy of his wages (1Ti 5:18). This admonishment is specific to the source of the wisdom of the mysteries of God so that no man can become superior to another in human regard. Page 7

8 Their Folly - Arrogance 4:8 You are already filled, you have already become rich, you have become kings without us; and indeed, I wish that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you. The upward call of God in Christ leads to a life of discipleship and sanctification that brings us closer to the image of Christ, but even Paul s perspective was that he had not yet attained it. But the Corinthians had arrived. They were of the same mind as the Laodicean church that Jesus rebuked in Revelation: Because you say, I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing, and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, (Rev 3:17) The ultimate outcome for the church is to reign with Christ (Tim :1; Rev 1:6; :7; 0:6). And Paul even projects forward to that time when they would be kings because that would mean Christ would be present in His reign and Paul and Apollos would be in the kingdom age too. But they viewed themselves as having reached the outcome of their salvation in the here and now. 4:9-13 For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ s sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are distinguished, but we are without honor. To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless; and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now. Paul is not complaining nor is he bragging about how much suffering he has achieved to prove his love for the Lord. While these things are true of Paul and the apostles, he is viewing their circumstances through the lens of their critics in Corinth. They viewed the circumstances and standing of the apostles the way that the carnal world would. They were effectively denying the call to die to self, to pick up the cross in order to follow Christ. Like the Corinthian believers and the church at Laodicea, so much of modern day Christianity has become centered on one theme; self promotion! Page 8
