INTRODUCTION: In 1 Corinthians 2:14-15 Paul makes a distinction between the natural man and the spiritual man The natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God for they are spiritually discerned In order to understand the things of the Spirit, you must be born again I don t expect someone who is not a Christian to understand the decisions I make as a Christian Neither do I expect them to live like a Christian, because as long as they are in bondage to sin they are not free moral agents They are held captive by the blindness Satan has brought over their minds concerning God thus they are not free Jesus came to bring recovery of sight to the blind in order to open their eyes that they might become free So the only way to be experience true freedom is in Christ alone Paul continues this thought in Chapter 3 1 Corinthians 3:1 (NKJV) 3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. Paul says I could not speak to you as spiritual or as those who are mature in the things of the Spirit, but as carnal There are those who would say Paul is making a distinction between two types of Christians carnal and spiritual But that would not follow the context Paul introduced in chapter 2 between the spiritual and the natural Thus to be carnal refers to the natural man, not the spiritual man The carnal man is ignorant of the life of the Spirit because they have no ability to receive it Then Paul applies his meaning to a Christian by using the term babes in Christ which is better translated immature, inexperienced or childish There are those who hate the term baby Christian but that is exactly the term Paul is using here Metaphorically, someone who is new in their faith is immature or inexperienced in the things of God and thus they act like a baby

If they don t get their way they quit or leave the church or in the case of the Corinthian church they become personality driven and become enamored with a person begin dividing over personal preference 1 Corinthians 3:2 4 (NKJV) 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos, are you not carnal? Remember: The topic is division and Paul is addressing it as the leader but the people are upset with Paul You know this Paul guy has problems he used to be my pastor but not anymore! THUS Paul is speaking metaphorically, comparing their behavior to that of an immature child versus a mature son and daughter I m still feeding you milk, not meat because you are still carnal Now the word carnal is not a noun, it s a nominative adjective and in this case it is describing behavior So what Paul is saying is I am speaking to you as spiritual infants because you re so new in your faith, you still think like the world You re not mature enough to in your faith to know the difference Because of that you re acting like the natural man Later Paul is going to caution against placing immature believers into positions of leadership too quickly because they are inexperienced in the things of the Spirit they still think and act like the world When you do it leads to division you value people based on their beauty, their talent, their charm, their intellect I remember my son Chase spoke in the Youth Group and the pastor said I want to make you the Youth Pastor why? He said my son was good looking and funny all the qualifications of a youth pastor right? Now it s not bad to be talented, but it is immature to divide the church over talent Paul calls it carnal acting like the world 1 Corinthians 3:5 8 (NKJV) 5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he

who waters, but God who gives the increase. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. Paul asks the questions who is Paul? Who is Apollos? Answer: We re just instruments used by God. Now if someone came and landscaped your yard and they used a shovel to do it you wouldn t go around town saying this amazing shovel landscaped my yard!!! You would hand out the card of the guy using the shovel We are instruments in God s hands God is the One doing the work Paul goes on to say Apollos and I are one why are you trying to create division? Both are needed. Paul will get rewarded for planting he started the church and Apollos will be rewarded for watering he took the work over so Paul could continue 1 Corinthians 3:9 (NKJV) 9 For we are God s fellow workers; you are God s field, you are God s building. Now I love this because Paul makes it clear it s not about me, it s about you you are the field, you are God s building When I hear someone say I quit, they don t know how gifted I am, I didn t get to do what I wanted to do, they don t value me It s all about them it s not about the people, the field, the building Guess who gets robbed of a blessing? All of us You get robbed of the blessing of being part of God s work and we get robbed of the blessing of what God desires to do through you because it s God who gives you the grace, the power to serve 1 Corinthians 3:10 15 (NKJV) 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one s work, of what sort it is. 14 If

anyone s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Paul is speaking of the local church at Corinth God gave Paul the grace to lay the foundation and the foundation Paul laid is Jesus the Messiah What Paul is saying is whoever builds on this foundation needs to watch what they build and he s speaking of Apollos The foundation we ve laid at Calvary Chapel San Clemente is Jesus If anyone tries to build anything on this foundation other than Jesus, it s going to look out of place because we re here for Jesus Now there are those who have used the church to promote themselves and when you see it it feels out of place it feels like it s all about them and not Jesus and certainly not the people Paul says it won t last There is going to be a day when our work will be tested It s referred to as the Bema Seat Judgment Each person s work will be tested with fire and whatever is done for self, out of selfish ambition or glory... will be burned up wood, hay, straw Actually Paul lists 6 different kinds of material you can build on Gold, silver, precious stones along with wood, hay and straw The first three are actually purified through fire so their worth increases the last three are destroyed by fire Pastor Chuck used to say one life to live, twill soon be passed, only what s done for Christ will last Now this is not a judgment concerning your eternal destiny Paul says, you re saved but instead of getting an eternal reward, you ve already gotten your reward on earth so you re saved as through fire 1 Corinthians 3:16 17 (NKJV) 16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Now there were two words used for temple the word hieron referred to the entire temple complex buldings, porches, courts, land Satan took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple, the hieron The other word is naos and it refers to the inner sanctuary, the holy place That is where God revealed Himself to man in the temple That is the word Paul uses you are the holy place Your life is the center of divine activity, you are the dwelling place of God The Spirit of God is dwelling in you and everyone else who is born again If you defile God s temple, God will destroy you Destroy means to make useless through disorder or to mess up God is going to render you useless by the disorder you create We will look at the ways we can defile the temple in 1 Corinthians 6, but for now Paul is exhorting us to be holy, set apart, don t act like the world 1 Corinthians 3:18 23 (NKJV) 18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their own craftiness ; 20 and again, The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile. 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come all are yours. 23 And you are Christ s, and Christ is God s. Paul warns each person to guard against falling victim to self-deception This is dangerous because it resides in you and it s usually based on fear, insecurity, lies or selfish ambitions that lie deep with us Paul says it shows itself in those who proclaim themselves to be wise teachers, self-appointed pastors and they align themselves with others in order to give themselves credibility They use flattery, hospitality, they know how to be charming, tell you the things you need to hear to get you on their team They tend to go for people who are new and vulnerable or who have ideas that are just a little off like them and they put their hooks into them Makes you feel like you need them because you don t fit anywhere else, you really hit it off and you need them to be your friend Paul quotes Job 5:13 and Psalm 94:11 and says God isn t fooled

He says listen, everything you need is in Jesus and everything Jesus has He freely gives to you and we all belong to Jesus and Jesus is God s Divisive people will always take you out of the place God placed you Because they need you to validate their divisiveness and it comes through innocent invitations that over time become walls of division Hey come over to our house, we re going to hang out with Cephas Let s go to the beach, Apollos is going to be there Paul admonition in Romans was to mark a divisive person and have nothing to do with them if you continue, you will fall into the same selfdeception they are under. 1 Corinthians 4:1 (NKJV) 4 Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Paul is saying this is how you should think of us We are servants and stewards Servant is the word hyperetas and it speaks of an under rower in a warship they would be one of the dozens of men rowing the ship It was hard work Later it came to mean an assistant or one who received orders or directions Steward refers to the chief slave who managed the property or household of his master Paul says God s leaders are servants of Christ They re doing the hard physical work, setting up chairs, pulling trailers, getting their hands dirty in addition to teaching, counseling, praying God s leaders are stewards of the mysteries of God and to me that speaks of the importance of managing God s house and preaching God s Word without putting my finger prints on it When I stand before Jesus, I want to give back to Him the keys and the books to this church and I don t want to be able to say here you go Lord, I was faithful with what you entrusted to me I preached Your Word faithfully for Your glory and there is nothing of me, it s all Yours And I want to hear well done good and faithful servant

1 Corinthians 4:2 4 (NKJV) 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. If you re in leadership, you are going to put yourself in a place of scrutiny People are going to judge you I know I ve been judged There are decisions I ve made as a leader people disagree with and I stand by my decisions when I ve made them out of obedience to the vision God has entrusted to me for this church People get together over coffee or dinner and I become the topic of conversation and it s usually couched in the appearance of not being critical or judgmental, but it always is and some little slight is made But even if you do judge me, Paul says it s a very small thing what you think because my actions are not tried in the court of public opinion What matters is am I being faithful to what God has entrusted to me We can t even determine for ourselves if we re being faithful Paul says I don t judge myself the Lord judges me All I can do is to follow the Lord the best I know how and I can hope that I m being faithful, but ultimately God is the one who decides Consequently, I don t judge you either for judging me because the Lord judges you not me 1 Corinthians 4:5 (NKJV) 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one s praise will come from God. When it comes to the motives of my heart and the decisions that I ve made, God will decide He will reveal the hidden things and the counsels of the heart the things that I have based my actions on The self-talk that goes on in your brain it will all be revealed Then God will give His approval for those things that are done out of faith 1 Corinthians 4:6 7 (NKJV)

6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. 7 For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? Paul is using himself and Apollos for their benefit so those who follow Apollos or Paul won t think they are better than the group that doesn t And he s cautioning them on using scripture against each other Don t think beyond what is written Remember, the context is Paul s leadership versus Apollos leadership Its amazing how Christians will use dreams, visions, scriptures to justify their criticism of a Christian leader I m sorry to say that Calvary Chapel pastors are often known for their open criticism of well known preachers by name Paul makes a plain statement what makes you different than them? Nothing we re all blood bought sinners in need of a Savior Then he asks what do you have that hasn t been given to you? Nothing everything we have is from God So if it s all been given to you, why do you boast like you are the one who got it all by your own power? Who made you judge? One thing I will do is confront a heretical teaching with God s Word But I don t need to name people in order to do that I trust you are mature enough to recognize when you hear something contrary to the word and are able to either refute it or quit listening to it NOW: Paul is about to confront something and I want to clue you in so you catch it he s about to confront shame and unbelief The reason why people divide is because of deep rooted shame, they don t know they are loved by God and they don t believe God s blessing is on their life so they operate in scarcity I need to kick, claw, bite and scratch in this world to make things happen for myself because if I don t do it nobody else will But listen to what Paul says 1 Corinthians 4:8 13 (NKJV)

8 You are already full! You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you! 9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. Notice Paul says You are already full, you are already rich, you have reigned as kings without us In order to be effective as a leader you need to minister from a place of overflowing otherwise you will look to the people to validate you You ll look for your tribe people like you or people who make you look so good to others they will be envious of you But notice the heart of a true minister God has displayed us last not first, condemned, on display before heaven and earth We re fools but you are wise We are weak but you are strong We are dishonored but you are distinguished We are hungry, thirsty, poorly clothed (shop at Marshall s), beaten and homeless We work with our own hands why? To minister to you. When people revile us, we bless When we re persecuted, we endure When we re being spoken against, we still come alongside to help We ve been treated like the filth of the world The ministry is not for the faint of heart 1 Corinthians 4:14 15 (NKJV) 14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

Paul is not trying to put a guilt trip on people, but to warn them If you re looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear you ll find someone that will tickle your ear, tell you how great you are, offer you a really nice position But you don t have many people who will pour into your life, who will labor over you in prayer, visit you when you re sick and have the integrity to speak the truth to you even at the risk of you getting mad and leaving 1 Corinthians 4:16 17 (NKJV) 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church. Paul said concerning Timothy only you have my heart for the people Only you Timothy understand grace the way I teach it So Paul sends Timothy to remind the Corinthians of Paul s understanding of how Jesus works What a blessing it is to have people like that 1 Corinthians 4:18 21 (NKJV) 18 Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power. 21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness? Apparently, there were those who thought Paul s not here so we ll just do what we want Paul reminds them I m coming, but how I come is up to you You can take the correction or not If you don t, then I ll come in the power of the Spirit to bring correction If you do, then I ll come in love and gentleness and we can hang out When you have those who don t take correction it becomes a power encounter between them and God Paul didn t want to see that happen that s the heart of a pastor
