Anglican Parish of the Parks St Silas & St Anselm Albert Park Trinity Sunday 27 May 2018 The musical setting for today s service is Dudman. Today s service will be recorded for sharing on the internet with those who are unable to be with us today: at We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Boonwurrung people, the original owners of this land, and acknowledge the people and elders of the Eastern Kulin nation who have traditional connections with, and responsibility for, the land on which we meet. 2 From Revd Sophie Sitting in my in-tray for the last 6 months has been a folder marked Filing: Sophie to read. I had snuck the odd peak inside from time to time, but never really read it properly. I had many other things to focus on when I started and I figured I would get around to it soon enough. However, it pressed on my mind. I don t like a full in tray, and this folder was really big. It was taking up a lot of space both in the tray and in my mind. I imagined I was going to have to find a whole lot of places to put these files and confess to avoiding the folder for this reason. Consequently, I felt guilty for not attending to it sooner. Today, I decided, it was time. It turns out this wasn t information I absolutely had to read. Rather it was information that I needed to know existed, should I ever need to know when the proteas had been planted, or what the Archbishop had said at the blessing of the lift, I could look in the filing cabinet. I can t tell you what a relief it was to happily hand the folder to Tara for filing! How often do we build something up in our minds to be bigger than it really is? If we think about becoming more engaged with the community or growing the health of our church, does this feel like that big folder on my desk? Does it feel like it s something we know we need to do, but worry about how it might impact on us? What a surprise it might be to discover it might be easier than we think? We re already making good connections through Sunday Suppers, but what more could we do? How might we connect with our café loving neighbours? Or those who scour the book shop for things to restore their spirits or those who sit and journal? Or the children who play footy on our front lawn? Or those who sit on our front steps to chat? There are many opportunities for us to extend ourselves, but of course we need to be prepared to take some risks and give of our time to support any new initiatives. Parish Council have their planning day this week. I wonder what might come out of our visioning and how involved you might like to be? Love and blessings Sophie 2 Anglican Parish of the Parks

Gathering in God s name A bell is rung as a signal for all to stand. Welcome The Lord be with you. And also with you. Processional Hymn TiS Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty, early in the morning to you our praise shall be; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessèd Trinity. 2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore you, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before you, God everlasting through eternity. 3. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide you, though the sinful human eye your glory may not see, you alone are holy, there is none beside you perfect in power, in love and purity. 4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty, all your works shall praise your name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessèd Trinity. Reginald Heber alt. Reproduced with permission Let us pray. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. 7 Gospel acclamation All sing Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia Al-le-lu-ia, Al-le-lu - ia, Al - le-lu-ia, Al- le- lu - ia Cantor sings All sing For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia Presider sings All sing Presider All sing Lord be with you And also with you A reading from the Holy Gospel, according to, John, chapter three, beginning at the first verse. (John 3: 1-17)) Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ 1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. 3 Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. 4 Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Inspire Grow Give Care

Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. After the Gospel is read Presider sings For the gospel of our Lord All sing Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Please be seated The Sermon Please stand Presider All Presider All Let us affirm as ours the faith of the Church (from APBA p.37) We believe in one God, who made and loves all that is. We believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was born, lived, died and rose again, and is coming to call all to account. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who calls, equips and sends out God s people, and brings all things to their true end. This is our faith, the faith of the Church: We believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. 8 Anglican Parish of the Parks

The Prayers of the People Please sit or kneel. After each petition: Hear our prayer. The prayers conclude with: Presider All Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession and Absolution Sr Server Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' Jesus said: 'This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.' Silence may be kept. Sr Server Let us therefore bring our sins before the one true God, in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Inspire Grow Give Care

Presider All Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All stand for the Greeting of Peace. We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The Greeting of Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Offertory During the hymn, an offertory bag will be passed around to collect your donations for the work of the church in our community. Offertory hymn TIS Praise the God who changes places, leaves the lofty seat, welcomes us with warm embraces, stoops to wash our feet. Friends, be strong! Hold your heads high! Freedom is our song! Alleluia! 2. Praise the rabbi, speaking, doing all that God intends, dying, rising, faith renewing, calling us his friends. Refrain 10 Anglican Parish of the Parks

3. Praise the Breath of Love, whose freedom spreads our waking wings, lifting every blight and burden till the spirit sings: Refrain 4. Praise, until we join the singing far beyond our sight, with the Ending-and-Beginning, dancing in the light. Refrain Words: Brian Arthur Wren 1936 Music: William Rowan Words & Music 1986 by Hope Publishing Co., Carol Stream, IL All rights reserved. Used by permission. Words: additional permission required. Blessed be God for ever. The Great Thanksgiving Presider sings All sing Presider sings All sing Presider sings All sing The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 12 All sing The celebrant continues the prayer Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. All sing The celebrant continues the prayer Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself in songs of never-ending praise: 12 Anglican Parish of the Parks

All sing Presider All As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory, are yours now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread and Communion Presider All We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. Inspire Grow Give Care

We sing together 1.Come, Spirit blest, your influence shed, and realise the sign; your life infuse into the bread, your power into the wine. 2.Effectual let the tokens prove and made, by heavenly art, fit channels to convey your love to every faithful heart. Charles Wesley alt. Presider The gifts of God, for the people of God. Come. Everyone is welcome at this altar. If you would prefer to receive a blessing instead of Holy Communion, please keep your hands to your side, so it is clear what you seek. If you have children with you, please bring them for a blessing, or Communion if they are used to receiving the sacrament. Presider Almighty and eternal God, may we who have received this sacrament of your Son's body and blood worship you in all we do, proclaim your word to all the world, and live in the power of your Spirit. 14 Anglican Parish of the Parks

Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit. The Notices (please be seated) Hymn TiS Lord, your almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight: hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light. 2. Saviour, who came to give those who in darkness live healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, now to all humankind let there be light. 3. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving holy dove, speed forth your flight; move on the waters face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth s darkest place let there be light. 4. Holy and blessèd Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might, boundless as ocean s tide rolling in fullest pride, through the earth far and wide, let there be light. TIS 447 John Marriott alt.
