1 News from the Anglican Centre December 2015/January 2016 Greetings everyone, My deepest thanks for your expressions of sympathy and love with the recent death of my Mum, Helen Ellena. She passed away very peacefully and gracefully just as she had lived her life. Our Dad was the gregarious extrovert who filled the house with people, with noise and we learned to expect the unexpected. Life was an adventure always new people to meet. Mum was the everlasting arms. She was the quiet strength who held us (and Dad) together and we respected and loved her so very deeply. She was so proud of each one of us, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Her one regret in life was that after playing (for New Zealand) in the first ever netball tests against Australia (in 1948) she was dropped the following season because she got engaged. You had to be single to play for your country in those days. She chose Dad. She was a woman of great faith and prayed for all her family every night. We feel her loss, but feel so blessed because of our Mum. This past weekend the Dean, Very Rev Nick Kirk, read the following out to the Cathedral. To all Parishioners of Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Being the Dean of this Cathedral has been one of the greatest challenges I have ever faced in ministry. Bishop Richard invited me to come and to facilitate change as we sought to bring a vibrancy of life to the Cathedral. I simply came with my deep passion for Jesus and for life in the Spirit and I can t say that it hasn t been difficult. At times we have felt misunderstood and other times, very lonely but our thanks go out to all those who have been so loving and supportive of our family and thank-you to those who are teaching us a deeper way of loving and forgiving. Despite the difficulties, I believe that God has been doing a refining work in all of us. It is our sincere belief that the church is not the structures and traditions of man, but it is all of us gathered together. We are the body of Christ. Both Kim and I sensed a clear call to this ministry a call that was confirmed in our prayer. However, I now face a very different battle. I have recently been diagnosed with a very serious and progressive illness. On the recommendation of my doctors and with the support of the Bishop and the Diocese I need to step down from ministry, effective immediately, in order to have the strength to deal with what now lies before me. Both Kim and I know that we are totally in God s hands. This service therefore will be my last as your Dean, although Bishop Richard has asked that I celebrate the communion here on Christmas morning. May I wish you every blessing and pray that God s Spirit may be poured out in this place... Page 1 of 12

2 I pray that you may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:18 19) Please uphold Nick and Kim in your daily prayers as you also continue to uphold Ian and Karen Thatcher. Actually I think we should be doing far more than simply upholding in prayer! We should be deeply pressing into prayer for the health situations faced by our two colleagues. Maybe it s time for us, as a Diocese to have a day of fasting and prayer during this advent season we are facing many challenges. I am thrilled, to be able to announce that the parish of Blenheim South have decided not to appoint a new Vicar. (A strange thing to be thrilled about!) But this parish has embraced my dreams for the development of a whole new initiative within Marlborough and have invited the Rev Sam Anderson to become Deacon Assistant in the Regional Deanery of Marlborough with a particular responsibility for leadership in the parish of Blenheim South. I flew over to Sydney the weekend following my Mum s funeral to preach at Sam s ordination and it only reinforced my anticipation for what seems to be emerging in Marlborough. Essentially it is the vision of a greater cooperation between four or five parishes that will retain their own unique identity but will work collaboratively in the development of regional ministries and the cross fertilisation of ministry gifts. Sam s appointment will be announced to the parish this Sunday (13 December).. In many respects it is revisiting the Waimea project that was trialled in the 1990 s but with a greater sense of grass-roots buy in and a new generation of clergy who have a collaborative vision. Sam is certainly one of these visionary new leaders and I am thrilled that he and Paula and their four children will be settling in to Blenheim South after Christmas, with a probable induction date very early in February. Please continue to pray for Rev Russell and Anna Pickersgill-Brown as they finish up in the parish of Mount Herbert and prepare to move into Motueka. The induction will be on Saturday 30 th January May I also encourage all parishes to consider supporting the Convergence camp at Kaiteriteri in February (details with the Ad Clerum). This is a Diocesan event, organised by some of the Nelson parishes. It is a great way of having a parish camp without having to duplicate all the preparation! I will be speaking and Andrew Burgess is leading the Bible Studies. The theme is covenant and kingdom. There is heaps of free time to enjoy the beach at Kaiteriteri and the many walks surrounding the camp. Parishes are able to pitch tends close to other parishioners while meeting other people from around the Diocese. Weather-wise it is at a time of year that is usually very settled. It is a great opportunity to be together in a more relaxed setting. Details are on the website. In the middle of January I am heading over to Tasmania to lead the Bible Studies at their mission s conference. It will be an opportunity to renew our friendship with this missionary Diocese that has a very similar ethos to our own Diocese. I hope that I might meet up with the newly elected Bishop, Richard Condie (a Melbourne vicar who was instrumental in establishing the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans in Australia). No doubt I will also be relaxing with Rev Edrick Corban-Banks while I m there. In the last few weeks I ve had the privilege of taking part in two confirmation services at Greymouth and All Saints. They are always special occasions as adults come to that point in their journeys when they want to make a more profound commitment in their discipleship. I am grateful to these two parishes that have prepared these folk in that commitment and nurtured them in their ministries. A couple of weekends ago, Radio New Zealand asked if they could come to the Cathedral and record a Christmas service to be broadcast on Christmas day. Really funny, on Advent Sunday, to be singing Christmas carols, praying Christmas prayers and preaching as though it is Christmas day. It was a lovely service and appreciated by the very positive responses of the Radio New Zealand team. Page 2 of 12

3 Many of you will be right in the middle of Christmas preparations and I am so appreciative of all that is done in making the most of this opportunity to celebrate our faith within our local communities. It is still an evangelistic opportunity. But I also pray that you will find time to rest and recreate in the weeks following Christmas. In some parishes, holiday numbers swell the congregations and this is a very busy time but there is still the opportunity to take time to enjoy the summer break. Finally may I just acknowledge several of our retired clergy who have been celebrating significant ministry milestones recently. I am aware that Rev Kevin Thompson (in Marlborough) has just celebrated 50 years as a Priest as has Rev Graeme Brady (recently retired up here into Nelson) and I watched Rev Dennis Mellsop quietly lighting a candle in the Cathedral the other morning 54 years ordained. POST ORDINATION MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT (POMD): Dates to be confirmed TRANS-TASMAN RURAL MINISTRY FORUM 2016 The Ninth Trans-Tasman Ecumenical Rural Ministry Consultation will be held in the Wairarapa at the Copthorne Hotel Solway Park Masterton, May The theme is: "Life, death and resurrection: the future of the rural church, for the whole community". I will try and get more information and there will be funds available to assist with attending. CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION (CPE) Dates: 16 Weeks (approximately Apr 15-Aug 6). Public holidays will be observed as holidays during this course. There is a maximum of 6 places available. The cost of the course per student is Page 5 of 12

6 $ (a $1,000pp subsidy is available form Ministry Education). Practical requirement: 15hrs/week of pastoral ministry (this is covered by normal parish work if you are involved in stipended ministry) + 5hrs reading/reflection/writing Peer group seminars will take place at Bishopdale Theological College two days per fortnight: 9am -3pm (followed by individual supervision as arranged). We are fortunate to have Rev Kath Maclean (Chaplain with Capital Coast District Health Board) and Rev Ros Sims (Priest-in-Charge of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Wainuiomata) again as the CPE supervisors who will run the course together. ISCAST (Institute for the Study of Christianity in an Age of Science and Technology) is an Australian organisation (with many NZers and expats) dedicated to exploring the interface between science and the Christian faith. Its membership consists of scientists, theologians and professionals with standing in their own fields and a commitment to the Christian faith. Their website has many good resources that tackle many questions about science and faith. See InterChurch Bioethics Council The InterChurch Bioethics Council (ICBC) is composed of appointed representatives from Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches for the purpose of addressing crucial ethical issues in NZ relating to bioethics Euthanasia Have Your Say There continues to be ongoing debate about legalising euthanasia in New Zealand. Following a petition signed by 8974 people and presented by Maryann Street asking for a change to the existing law, the Health Select Committee is undertaking an investigation in order to fully understand public attitudes (including the social, legal, medical, cultural, financial, ethical, and philosophical implications). The Committee will investigate: 1. The factors that contribute to the desire to end one s life. 2. The effectiveness of services and support available to those who desire to end their own lives. 3. The attitudes of New Zealanders towards the ending of one's life and the current legal situation. 4. International experiences. If you want to have your say on this very important issue, please make a public submission (2 copies required if made in writing). 8 SOCIAL SERVICES ENABLER Dear colleagues, When I hear media reports which say we should not wish people Merry Christmas any longer because Jesus s name is in the word, I want to say to them just pack up and go home please! What sad individuals! Thankfully, in our democracy, we still have the ability to offer hope and love, through Christ, to those for whom Christmas might not be so merry. Whether you support the local Salvation Army gift and toy appeal, Operation Christmas child, buy Tear Fund Gift for Life or World Vision Smiles or donate to Fred Hollows this year or whether you give your neighbour an I ll mow your lawn voucher or some baking, it is the memory of the birth our loving Lord and Saviour that we celebrate with gift-giving and thankfulness. Call me nuts but I need the peace of God when the world does this crazy-making stuff and I so look forward to the Christmas eve service when that peace never fails to arrive! Thank you Lord. Love and blessings, Gerrie Mead, Social Services Enabler ENABLER FOR OLDER PERSONS MINISTRY This comes to you at the start of the Advent Season when the expectation of the coming of Christ is paramount in our hearts. Advent, as we know, is not just all about preparing for Christmas and my constant prayer is that we make the most of the season. As I write this I am coming towards the end of my period of sick leave following the major operation I had in October. I have come to realise that even with its faults we are so blessed with the health service we have. A colleague who has undergone similar surgery to mine wrote this recently: I feel very fortunate to have had the treatment (surgery) option - probably not available to most of the world s population - and to have (probably) escaped this particular aspect of mortality. How right he is. Enough about me! I was sorry to have missed the graduation of a number of our parish elder care workers back in October. I am planning to offer the course again to those who could not attend this year. I will be writing about this soon. The Anglican Care Charitable Trust on behalf of the Standing Committee has held a major review of the Older Persons Ministry Fund. The outcomes of the review will be communicated to you as soon as we are able. As those in leadership positions in our parishes and ministry units it is incumbent upon us to raise the professional standard of care for our oldest people and the money from the Fund is to be used essentially for that purpose. I urge you not to become dependent upon the fund but to see it more as a seeding grant towards the ministry which you, your Vestry and your people have discerned to be essential. I will be contacting each of you either individually or in Deanery groupings to discuss this review and its impact on the ministry. 9 YOUTH COORDINATOR 'Raising up the next generation with a passion for Christ Hi everyone, here at the Youth desk we are looking forward to summer which apparently is kicking off in just over a week's time. December is often the busy season for ministers with Christmas looming and all those end of year dinners and do's to attend. All the best for your prep as you wrap up the year that was, remember to stay peaceful and enjoy sunshine responsibly. We have a bag of lost property left over from Camp! if you have lost something please let us know so we can check the bag. Any outstanding lost property will be donated to a good cause by the end of the week. Mainly sweaters and a few pairs of undies in there. Christchurch and Wellington have also set up some Christian flatting and formation opportunities that are worth exploring.
