1 Stewards of God s Mercy 2016 MINISTRY CATALOG Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church

2 Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church 5501 Monticello Road, Shawnee, KS 66226, Dear Sacred Heart Family: On the following pages you will find information about our parish and its various ministries. Buildings do not make a church people do. A parish is a community of believing Christians and the people of Sacred Heart are most important. We are here to help you grow spiritually and to help you to develop associations with other members of our community. Sacred Heart worships together each and every day; especially on the weekends. Every effort is made to make the liturgical celebrations come alive so that all might experience the richness of Christ which the Church presents to us in the sacred ceremonies. Ample opportunity is provided for all to benefit from the Eucharist and other Sacraments. Although our Parish is large, it is known as a warm, friendly, family-type church. We hope you will experience the welcome of our parish family. We are happy that you are with us. We look forward to celebrating with you as a member of our family. Peace, Fr. Pat Sullivan Pastor

5 Stewardship as a Way of Life As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10 Stewardship is the response of each individual s call to discipleship, a lifelong way of life, whereby one responds to the mission and ministry of the local and universal Church, sharing the Gospel of the life, death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Stewardship recognizes that we, as individuals, are not the owners of our lives, our time, our talent, nor our treasure, but stewards or managers of these God-given gifts. Stewardship is our time, talent and treasure given to God in thanksgiving and with increase for all that He has given us. Stewardship invites you to prayerfully consider your relationship with Jesus Christ. Do you set aside time to commit to Him alone? Stewardship invites you to prayerfully consider how you are called to share your talents within various ministries of our parish. How do you serve Him by serving others? Stewardship invites you to prayerfully consider how you are called to share your treasure in proportion to what you have received. Do you tithe by definition which is a 10th part of one s income consecrated to God? In general terms, these guidelines should be followed: 5% to the parish offertory for ongoing expenses; 1% to the Archdiocese; 4% to the charity of your choice

6 Parish Councils STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL The primary goal of our Stewardship Council is to help form Disciples in Christ. We recognize that we are all interconnected and dependent upon on each other to ultimately reach His kingdom, as we are all many parts of the one body in Christ. Disciples are formed in an atmosphere that provides hospitality, formation, prayer and service. Our primary role is to help create and maintain this atmosphere, but with the understanding that Christ links discipleship with action. Thus, our secondary role is to invite each parishioner to live Stewardship as a Way of life as they respond with their gifts of time, talent and treasure to Sacred Heart and the community at-large. BERKEL INITIATIVE In February, 2014, Sacred Heart was a beneficiary of a $1.5 million bequest from past parishioner Charles Berkel. This gift went directly toward the reduction of our mortgage debt held by the Archdiocese. After hearing the news of this most generous gift, a few parishioners wanted a way to not only honor Charles Berkel and his act of stewardship, but also a way for our parish to financially match his gift. Thus the Berkel Initiative was born. The Berkel Initiative is an opportunity for each parish family to give a portion of their 4% to assist Sacred Heart in paying down our mortgage debt. As a faithful Christian steward, please consider joining our parish family in making a pledge to the Berkel Initiative to help secure a better financial future for our parish. To learn more about this Initiative, please go to: FINANCE COUNCIL The Parish Finance Council is established in accord with Canon 537 to advise and assist the pastor in matters pertaining to parish finances and properties. The Finance Council assists the pastor in being good stewards of parish resources by overseeing and planning the financial aspects of our parish resources to spread the Gospel. The pastor appoints the members of Finance Council after consultation with the current council and/or the Stewardship Council. Members are appointed for a three-year period renewable once. Registered parishioners who wish to be considered for appointment to the Finance Council should contact the pastor.
