2 The Crusader June 2017 The Saint of the month O ne day in the year 1408 the great apostle Saint Vincent Ferrer suddenly interrupted his sermon, to declare that there was among his hearers a young Franciscan who would be one day a greater preacher than himself, and who would be placed in honour by the Church before himself. This unknown friar, who would be canonised only six years after his death, was Bernardine, then 28 years old. Of noble birth, he had spent his youth in works of mercy, caring for the sick before he entered religion at the age of 24. Saint Bernardine of Siena Franciscan Missionary Preacher ( ) Owing to a speech defect, Bernardine's success as a preacher at first seemed doubtful, but by the prayers of Our Lady, this obstacle was miraculously removed in 1417, and the Franciscan friar began an apostolate which lasted until he died. One day, preaching in praise of the Blessed Virgin, he applied to Her the verse of the Apocalypse: A great sign appeared in heaven, a Woman clothed with the sun... At once a brilliant star appeared over his head. He was understood, when he spoke in Italian, by listeners of the Greek language who knew only their maternal tongue. He obtained miraculous conversions and reformed the greater part of Italy by his burning words and by the power of the Holy Name of Jesus. He preached that devotion, displaying at the end of his sermons, the Holy Name written on a tablet. He was also a zealous apostle of the cult of Saint Joseph. It is said that during sixteen years, and some say eighteen, he did not pass a single day without preaching. But his success had to be purified by the cross. The Saint was denounced as a heretic, and his devotion as idolatrous. After many trials he lived to see his innocence proved. In 1427 he refused the bishopric of Siena, and a few years later two others, in order to continue his preaching. He miraculously cured lepers and other sick persons, and raised to life several deceased persons. The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, established in 1530, was extended to the entire Church in 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII. Saint Bernardine was appointed Vicar General of his Order in 1438, which office he held for five years, then preached again for a time until his last illness forced his retirement in He died on Ascension Eve of that year, while his brethren were chanting the antiphon: Father, I have manifested Thy Name to men. Already in 1450, a Jubilee year, he was canonised. Saint Bernardine of Siena s feastday is on 20 th June

June 2017 The Crusader 3 FROM THE CHAPLAIN Dear Crusaders and Friends, This month we are asking Our Lady to give us holy priests. Most of you pray for vocations after every Rosary. You say: Lord grant us priests, Lord grant us holy priests, Lord grant us many holy priests, Lord grant us many holy religious vocations! We ask the good Lord for these things and we should also ask them from our Lady. Remember, she was the one who gave birth to Our Lord, who raised our Lord. She helped Him to become a priest, a holy priest, the High Priest. Our Lady still wants to help make priests. She wants to help make holy priests. But how will she do this? First of all she asks them to love her. By love, priests give her their hearts. Then, she gives them something back; she gives them her own heart back. What an amazing gift of the Virgin Mary. But what will the priest do with this heart of Mary? Will he hide it away in a treasure chest or will he use it for what it was made for? Of course, he will use it for what it was made for. But what was the heart of Mary made for? It was made to love her Divine Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord. So then, the priest will take this gift of the heart of Mary and will love Jesus with it. By loving Jesus the priest gives him Mary s heart. You can imagine how pleased Jesus is when He receives this love and this heart of Mary from the priest. Jesus is always grateful and always generous, so He gives something back to the priest. Can you guess what it is? Yes, Jesus gives His own heart to the priest. Now some of you might be a little sad here. You might think that the priest has lost Mary s heart. Yes, he has Jesus heart which is better, but he had to give away Mary s heart. Yet, you have nothing to fear. If you look more closely at Jesus heart you will see a heart within a heart. Mary s heart is there inside of Jesus heart. So in the end, the priest has both hearts in one. But we have not finished. What will the priests do with Jesus and Mary s hearts? Will he hide them away or use them for what they were made for? And what were these hearts made for? They were made to love and honour God the Father. So now the priest, with Jesus and Mary s hearts, is doing the work of Jesus; praising and honouring God the Father. This is what a priest was made to do and if he does it well, he will be a holy priest. Be diligent this month of June, month of the Sacred Heart, in asking Our Lady to give her heart to priests; in asking her to ask her Son to give His Heart to priests; in asking Jesus and Mary to make holy priests for us. God bless you all. Yours in the Hearts of Jesus & Mary, Fr. Benjamin Campbell

4 The Crusader June 2017 THE LITTLE FLOWER The story of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus By Mary Fabyan Windeatt THE BABY OF THE MARTIN FAMILY O f course Marie and Pauline found it hard to go to sleep after Papa s visit. They asked each other many questions about their new sister. For instance, was she a healthy baby? Would she stay with them or go to Heaven like the other little sisters and brothers? What would Papa and Mama call her? When would she be baptised? Who would be her godparents? Marie, I think you ll be chosen, said Pauline suddenly. After all, you re the oldest thirteen next month. I m only eleven. Marie smiled. To be godmother of the new little sister! That would be wonderful! Oh, I hope so, she said softly. I ve never been a godmother in my whole life. So it came to pass that on 4th January, when she was two days old, a little procession set out from the house and made its way through the snowy streets to the church of Notre Dame. The maid, Louise, carried her in her arms, well wrapped in blankets. Then came Papa, with Marie and Pauline each hanging on an arm. There were also some neighbours and friends. Papa, tell us again what the baby is going to be called, said Marie. I m so excited about being her godmother that I m just not sure. Papa laughed heartily. Her name is a nice one, child. Marie Frances Thérèse. Then the happy light died out of his eyes as he gave a quick glance at the wintery sky. Dear God, please leave this child with us! he whispered. In the Name of Thy Son, Jesus Christ! There was good reason for Papa to be anxious. In the days following her Baptism, she fell ill and it seemed likely that God soon would take her to Himself in Heaven. The only way that this child can be saved is to give her to a good nurse, said the doctor. One who lives in the country. Perhaps with proper food and plenty of fresh air and sunshine, the baby will get strength enough to live. Poor Mama! She did not want to be parted from her, yet she agreed to do whatever the doctor thought best. There was a farm woman she knew, Rose Taillé, who might take care of her for a few months. She had been very successful in nursing other sick children. Perhaps she could help. Rose Taillé wasn t sure about this. The day Mama brought her into Alençon to have a look at her, the good-natured woman gave a great sigh. She had never seen such a poor little scrap of humanity. Why, she was nothing but skin and bones! And so pale! I ll do my best, she told Mama. But I can promise you nothing, Madame. Ah, what a sickly little mite we have here! Only prayers will save her, I m thinking. Mama nodded. There would be plenty of prayers to Saint Joseph, to the Blessed Virgin, to all the Saints. Oh, how she would pray! And Papa, too. So Rose took her out into the country, pausing frequently on the journey to see if she was

June 2017 The Crusader 5 still alive. She was a little worried about this new responsibility. She had four children of her own to care for, and it was necessary to help her husband with the farm work, too. Perhaps she shouldn t have taken her. If she died, people might blame her. But she did not die. God heard the fervent prayers which Papa and Mama offered for her recovery, and at Rose s house she became a totally different child. This was because the good woman had no luxuries to give. On the contrary, she had very little time to spend on her care. Because there was no proper carriage, she would put the little tot in a wheelbarrow filled with hay and take her out to where she and her husband were working. Sometimes she left her alone under a tree. At others, Rose put the wheelbarrow in the sun. The little one is pale, she said. Maybe the sunshine will help her to grow strong. And she did grow strong and brown. In a few months there was no longer any danger that she would die. Rose was very proud, and one May day she took her home to show Mama. Why, she weighed fourteen pounds! Thérèse is going to be all right, Madame, she said thankfully. And I think I can leave her with you, now that she s nearly five months old. Mama was so happy. Rose, how can I thank you? she cried. You saved my little girl s life! Rose smiled shyly as she put her into Mama s arms. I have to go to the market now, she said. It s the day for selling butter, and I m late. Of course Thérèse could not understand what Rose was saying, but it did not take long for her to realise that she had been left in a stranger s arms. At once she started to cry. Nothing could make her stop. As time passed Mama became frightened. She tried to comfort her, to sing little songs, to rock her to sleep. But she wasn't interested. She wanted Rose, no one else. Finally Mama called the maid. Louise, what am I going to do? Thérèse will make herself sick with all this crying! Louise peered down at her. She was screaming at the top of her lungs, and her face was a deep and angry red. Do you really want my opinion, Madame? In Heaven s name, yes! None of my other children ever acted like this. Louise smiled. It s simple, Madame. The child wants Rose. She won t stop crying unless we take her to her. But Rose is selling butter at the market! She could still look after the baby, Madame. And she d be pleased if we told her how the little one misses her. Poor Mama! She didn t want to let go, but there was nothing else to do. All right, she said sadly. Take Therese down to the market, Louise. But if she keeps crying, what shall we do then? There was no need for Mama to worry about this. As soon as Louise arrived at the market, where women from the farms outside Alençon were selling their butter, Thérèse began to smile. Then she laughed and laughed, for her eyes had caught sight of Rose. She stretched out her arms happily. This was what she had wanted all the time her mother! They stayed at the market until noon, happy and contended as Rose and her friends sold their butter. A few people asked questions about her as she lay quietly in her good friend s arms. Rose, I didn t know you had such a little girl as this one, they remarked. And she has fair hair. I thought all your children were dark. Rose laughed. Oh, the child isn t mine, she said. Then, whose is she? She belongs to the Martin family, Lord bless her! And good as gold she is, too at least when I m looking after her! More next month.

6 The Crusader June 2017 EUCHARISTIC DEVOTION The Sunday Feast T he Council of Trent wishes that at each Mass the faithful who are present may communicate in order to draw more abundant fruit from the Holy Mass. The faithful, being obliged to assist at Mass on Sunday, should then enter into the spirit of the Church and receive Holy Communion. That is why the saint recommends so earnestly that we give our souls this special feast on Sunday. Let us thank the Holy Ghost for the light that he gives us by His Church and let us strive to conform our conduct to it. 1. THE SUITABILITY FOR AN IMMORTAL SOUL OF A GOOD BANQUET ONCE A WEEK. The Third Commandment is a great affair You will spend the Sunday serving God devotedly. Weekdays are for the body, Sunday is for the spirit. The body made from the earth can be destroyed; the soul made in the image of God is imperishable, and it is this which sustains the body. It is to this then that we owe the most care, and, nevertheless, we always neglect the soul and care only for the body. See, all the week one gathers, one spends, one buys, one sells; but all that is for the body. Arrange things then to make once a week a feast for the immortal soul: O delicious banquet! O heavenly Bread! Oh! what a privilege! to be able to feed his soul and to feed it with God! Saint Philomena 2. WE SHOULD PREPARE FOR THIS FEAST OF THE SOUL BY PURITY OF HEART. We must take some trouble to purify our souls. Look at the pictures of the holy Virgin, of St. Philomena: the painter has worked hard to adorn them; that is why they are so beautiful. They are pleasing to look at. Let us work as hard to adorn our souls to please men and Angels and the good God.

June 2017 The Crusader 7 Nothing is so beautiful as the pure soul that is nourished by its God. Purify yourself then by a good Confession, and each Sunday receive God the food of your soul. You know that one only relishes the good odour and taste of fruits in proportion to the health of the body; thus the soul penetrates the wonders of God in the measure of its purity. Ah! we do not relish God because of lack of purity. Oh! what a misfortune not to taste the good God. Let us purify ourselves, let us receive our God, let us merit heaven; in heaven we shall see our beauty, and we shall feel all the taste of God. 3. TO DESIRE IT ARDENTLY. See, reflect this priest holds God to feed my soul! O! we should die of joy but we do not love the good God. No. Behold the good God is so good, so great that we must fly joyously and very high like a bird to come to Him. How we shall sing for joy when we have attained to Him! See then what joy it is to have this great God for food. What has this soul done to merit it? O my soul, whom do you go to receive? Thy God, thy Creator, thy Saviour. Ah, my children, if you understood this clearly, you would die of joy! 4. THE EFFECTS OF THIS BANQUET ON THE SOUL AND THE BODY. We have seen good Christians who are unmindful of their bodies. Isn t that better than to be like those bad Christians who forget their souls, like people in the world who think only of material things, who fill their stomachs with plentiful and delicious food. Well, what is the fruit of it? At the end a body which will go to the graveyard. For us Christians the fruit of our spiritual food is our salvation, and in heaven even our bodies will be transfigured. Do you understand? To go up to heaven, to be filled with God! Man is so great, so great, that he is carried there on the shoulders of God. See where the fruit of partaking of this food leads: Holy Communion nourished St. Simeon in his body as well as in his soul. His soul bathed in the joy of the love of God sustained his body.

10 The Crusader June 2017 ENGLISH AND WELSH MARTYRS Saint Boniface, 754 S aint Boniface (c th June 754 AD), born Winfrid, at Crediton in the kingdom of Wessex in Anglo-Saxon England, was a leading figure in the Anglo-Saxon mission to the Germanic parts of the Frankish Empire during the 8th century. He established the first organized Christianity in many parts of Germania. He is the patron saint of Germania, the first archbishop of Mainz and the "Apostle of the Germans." He was killed in Frisia in 754, along with 52 others. His remains were returned to Fulda, where they rest in a tomb which became a site of pilgrimage. Facts about Boniface's life and death as well as his work became widely known. Winfrid was of a respected and prosperous family. When he was five years of age, his chief delight was to hear holy men converse about God and heavenly things. The edifying deportment and holy instructions of certain pious monks who, being employed in preaching in that country, happened to come to his father s house, gave him a strong desire to devote himself to God in a religious state; and though he was only a child, the deep impressions which their words left upon his heart were never after effaced. His father exerted his whole authority to divert him from his inclination to the monastic life; till being visited by a dangerous sickness, he acknowledged in it the hand of God, chastising him for opposing his son s vocation, which from that time he gave him free leave to pursue. Winfrid was educated from thirteen years of age in the monastery of Exeter, under the holy Abbot Wolphard. With the study of grammar he joined assiduous devout meditation and the most rigorous observance of monastic discipline. He received further theological training in the Benedictine monastery of Nursling, not far from Winchester. Winfrid taught in the abbey school and at the age of 30 became a priest. Around 716, when his abbot Wynbert of Nursling died, he was invited to take his place. Winfrid, however, declined the position and in 716 set out on a missionary expedition to Frisia. Boniface first left for the continent in 716. He travelled to Utrecht, where St.Willibrord, the "Apostle of the Frisians," had been working since the 690s. He spent a year with Willibrord, preaching in the countryside, but their efforts were frustrated by the war then being carried on between Charles Martel and Radbod, King of the Frisians. Willibrord fled to the abbey he had founded in Echternach (in modern-day Luxembourg) while Boniface returned to Nursling. Boniface returned to the continent the next year and went straight to Rome, where Pope Gregory II renamed him "Boniface," and appointed him missionary bishop for Germania he became a bishop without a diocese for an area that lacked any church organisation. He would never return to England, though he remained in correspondence with his countrymen and kinfolk throughout his life.

June 2017 The Crusader 11 According to his Life, Boniface felled the Donar Oak, Latinized by Willibald as "Jupiter's oak," near the present-day town of Fritzlar in northern Hesse. According to his early biographer Willibald, Boniface started to chop the oak down, when suddenly a great wind, as if by miracle, blew the ancient oak over. When the god of the tree did not strike him down, the people were amazed and converted to Christianity. He built a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter from its wood at the site the chapel was the beginning of the monastery in Fritzlar. In 732, Boniface travelled again to Rome to report, and Pope Gregory III conferred upon him the pallium as archbishop with jurisdiction over Germany. Boniface again set out for what is now Germany, baptised thousands, and dealt with the problems of many other Christians who had fallen out of contact with the regular hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church. During his third visit to Rome in , Pope Gregory required of him a confession of his faith, as is usual with regard to bishops elect before their consecration. He was after a few days ordained his bishop and made him papal legate for Germany. To assist him in planting the spirit of meekness and Christian piety in a fierce and uncivilised nation, St Boniface invited over from England many holy men and religious women. Among these were St Wigbert, St Burchard, Bishop of Wurzburg, St Willibald, Bishop of Einchstadt, and St Lullus; and among the holy virgins were St Lioba, our saint s cousin, St Thecla, St Walburge, Bertigita and Contruda, to whom he committed the direction of several nunneries which were erected in Thuringia. After Boniface's third trip to Rome, Charles Martel erected four dioceses in Bavaria (Salzburg, Regensburg, Freising, and Passau) and gave them to Boniface as archbishop and metropolitan over all Germany east of the Rhine. In 745, he was granted Mainz as metropolitan see. Boniface had never relinquished his hope of converting the Frisians, and in 754 he set out with a retinue for Frisia. He baptised a great number and summoned a general meeting for confirmation at a place not far from Dokkum, between Franeker and Groningen (in modern day Holland.) Instead of his converts, however, a group of armed robbers appeared who slew the aged archbishop. Boniface persuaded his (armed) comrades to lay down their arms: "Cease fighting. Lay down your arms, for we are told in Scripture not to render evil for good but to overcome evil by good." Boniface's remains were moved from the Frisian countryside to Utrecht, and then to Mainz. His remains were eventually buried in the abbey church of Fulda after resting for some time in Utrecht, and they are entombed within a shrine beneath the high altar of Fulda Cathedral, previously the abbey church. Veneration of Boniface in Fulda began immediately after his death; his grave was equipped with a decorative tomb around ten years after his burial, and the grave and relics became the centre of the abbey and of the cult of the saint. Saint Boniface's feast day is celebrated on 5 June. A famous statue of Saint Boniface stands on the grounds of Mainz Cathedral, seat of the archbishop of Mainz.

12 The Crusader June 2017 KINDNESS: the Bloom of CHarity By this rubric giving thoughts on Fraternal Charity, the Crusaders ought to find help in the practice of their motto: Pray Make sacrifices Receive Holy Communion Be an Apostle. Indeed, these four practices are simply four ways of practising the great virtue of Charity, which is the link of perfection. These thoughts can be used, as well, as source of meditation for knights and handmaids. SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES Saint Francis de Sales, in the words of Saint Paul, made himself all things to all men. His characteristic virtues were unflagging zeal in union with unruffled gentleness. Saint Francis said: For myself, I know of no Christian perfection other than to love God with our whole heart and our neighbour as ourselves. All other perfection is falsely so entitled: it is sham gold that does not sand testing. Charity is the only bond between Christians, the only virtue which unites us absolutely to God, and our neighbour. * * * So light-hearted and gay was he, so truly did his happy face express the serenity and peace of his soul that it was almost impossible to remain for any time in his company without catching something of this joyous spirit. * * * Saint Francis de Sales says: We must look upon all the souls of men as resting in the heart of Our Saviour. Alas! they who regard their fellow-men in any other way, run the risk of not loving them with purity, constancy, or impartiality. But, beholding them in that divine resting place, who can do otherwise than love them, bear with them, and be impatient with their imperfections? Who dare call them irritating or troublesome? Yes, your neighbour is there in the heart of the Saviour, and there so beloved and lovable that the divine Lover dies for love of him. A truly charitable love of our neighbour is a rarer thing than one would think. It is like the few particles of gold which are found on the shores of the Tagus, among masses of sand.

June 2017 The Crusader 13 HOLY souls corner A Love Rosary is a method of saying the rosary, meditating on the mysteries, especially the Sorrowful Mysteries, while having a keen appreciation of the love that God has for mankind in general, and for us in particular. God sent His only begotten Son into this world to save us from the disaster of original sin. Heaven was closed to us. God conceived an eternal plan in which His only begotten Son should become incarnate and suffer as no one could ever suffer. There is no finer proof that God loves us, reversing the disobedience of Adam contracting original sin for himself and all of his descendants. He saved us by living and dying, doing always the will of God His father. Our soul should burn with a fire of love for God by entering into the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Only when sentiments such as these take a hold of thee, as a great inner flame of the fire of love, will you be able to say a Rosary with the fruitfulness it deserves. During each of the Sorrowful mysteries, every act of Our Lord, every pang of suffering, cries out Love for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. A Love Rosary said for the Suffering Souls in Purgatory, or maybe for one or two souls in particular, will allow you to meditate on their intense sufferings, now willingly borne, in union with those of our incarnate Lord. Their whole being now vibrates with love for Our Lord whom they now recognise, without the dross of earth to distract from the great love he has for each one us, living here on earth or suffering in Purgatory. We can participate in the sufferings and the love of the Holy Souls by simply adopting the attitude of love epitomised by our great model, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Alas we on earth are often far from the sentiments of love exhibited by the Holy Souls. Look around you and see the sinfulness and apathy among men. Men who would rather spend some hours watching a profane theatrical play, or who get so excited at the empty glory of a football match, won or lost. If and when these men arrive in Purgatory, the true value of these pastimes, more or less useless to our salvation, will be at last realised to the full. This is not to say that some relaxation is not good. Participation in sport, for example, is excellent. But for the love of God we should aim for a balance between earthly pastimes and heavenly aspirations. Grant me the grace henceforth dear Jesus, for the love of Thee, to hate sin; and out of a just esteem of Thee, to despise all worldly vanities (The Jesus Psalter).

14 The Crusader June 2017 MY CATHOLIC FAITH Chapter 26. Anger, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth Our Lord showed how hateful gluttony is in the parable of the rich man, Dives, and the poor Lazarus (1). Dives was so greedy that he would not even give scraps to Lazarus, who sat at his gate. But when Dives died, he went to hell, while Lazarus went to heaven. The brothers of Joseph (2), were so envious of him that they sold him to some merchants going to Egypt. God rebuked their sin by blessing Joseph in Egypt, and causing him to be in a position to help his envious brothers later. What is envy? Envy is a bitter feeling at the excellence or good fortune of those who are better or happier, with a desire to rob them of what they have. 1. Envy consists in discontent or anger at the success of another, as though it were evil to oneself. It also consists in rejoicing over another's misfortune, as if it were a good to oneself. Envy is against the commandment of God to love our neighbour. It is the mark of the petty mind and the hard heart. The devil envied Adam and Eve in Paradise; Cain envied Abel, whose offering was pleasing to God. Some are so envious that they even envy the holiness of others, but without any desire or attempt at imitation. This was the case with the Pharisees, and their envy led them to plot the death of Jesus Christ. Cain and Abel 2. Envy leads to calumny, gossip, detraction, hatred, scandal, and other sins. An envious man looks on everything with malice; as a result his envy does not even make himself happy, but destroys his peace of heart. The sons of Jacob were envious of their brother Joseph because he was the favourite son. Their envy led them to sell him into Egypt. Often the envy in a man's heart causes him to be so soured on the world that he sells himself for nothing to the devil. 3. A form of envy, one of the greatest sins, is envy at another's spiritual good. This is a most diabolical sin; it shows that the sinner has closed his heart against the charity of God, and instead houses God's enemy, Satan. The virtue opposed to envy is charity, or brotherly love (See Chapter 45 on Meekness, Abstinence, Zeal, Brotherly Love).
