1. Introduction 2. Objective of the Survey 3. What is a testament? 4. Why the New Testament? 5. Of what relevance is the New Testament to the Church? 6. New Testament Survey 7. Old and New Testament compared.

The New Testament was written approximately between A.D 45 A.D 95. It was originally written in Koine Greek otherwise known as common Greek (the everyday form of the Greek language in the first century A.D. The N.T is divided into five sections: The Gospels: Matthew, Mark,Luke and John. History book: The Acts of the Apostles. Pauline Epistles: Romans - Philemon General Epistles: Hebrews - Jude Prophecy: Book of Revelation. The Gospels give us four different, yet not conflicting, accounts of the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospels demonstrate how Jesus was the promised messiah of the Old Testament and lay the foundation for the teaching of the rest of the NT. The Book of Acts records the deeds of Jesus' apostles, it reveals the birth of the Church and its rapid growth in the first century A.D. The Pauline Epistles (letters written by the Apostle Paul to specific churches - presenting official Christian doctrine and the practice that should follow that doctrine. The General Epistles serves as a compliment to the Pauline Epistles with additional teachings and applications. The Book of Revelation presents revelation of the past, explanation of the present and prophecies of the events to come even in the end times. (Rev. 1:4,8).

Why are we looking at the New Testament? 1. To give a general overview of the New Testament. 2. it is never to regard any part of the Bible as not been relevant but emphasize the mind of God. Heb 7:18, 8:6-13; Rom 10: 1-4, 8:1-4. The New Testament is a progressive revelation of the Old Testament. We shall 3. Since believers in Christ are called to be ministers of the New Testament, conducting a survey on the composition of the New Testament becomes necessary. 2Cor 3: Jesus Christ mediated (i.e go between) for the New Covenant through His blood and death (Matt 26:27, Luke 22:20, Heb 9:15). Upon this, it is expected that all the faith of a believer should rest on the New Testament.

The word Testament is coined from the word Testimony. The word Testament refers to a Covenant or Will. It is the evidence or proof of a fact, event or quality. It can be seen as a law in force or binding instuctions. It could also be seen as an account or documented reports/witness of what has happened. Also, it could mean a term of reference or an agreement for a relationship between two parties.

From Hebrews 8:6-9 we can gain a good understanding as to why God instituted a New Covenant. The following can be noted; The Old Testament was only a shadow of the good things to come, not the reality. The New Testament is the reality Hebrews 10:1 The Old Covenant was faulty Hebrews 7:18-19 The Old was weak, ineffective and all together useless Heb 7:18-19 People could not fully abide by the terms of the covenant. Heb. 8:9, Act 15:10. This will help us understand the goals of the New Testament. The following can be deduced from the scripture Hebrews 8:6-13:

The NT survey is a powerful and rewarding study. it reveals acts and significance of Jesus death on the cross, resurrection and ascension to us and what our response should be. The NT reveals the fulfilled plan of God Almighty in restoring us back unto Himself through Jesus Christ particularly in relationship and position in God.. It reveals the birth of the Church and Christianity. Focuses on giving solid Christian teaching along with the practical results that should follow that teaching.

St. Matthew Author: Matthew, called Levi, son of Aphaeus and brother of James. A publican and one of the 12 apostles. He is supposed to have preached in Judea for 15 years, going to Ethiopia and other lands afterwards. He did not suffer martyrdom. It is peculiarly the gospel to Israel. 31 Sections not in other Gospels: Four events in infancy: visit of wise men (2:1-15); massacre 2:16-18; flight into Egypt 2:13-15; return 2:19-23 Ten parables: tares 13:24-30; hidden treasure 13:44; the pearl 13:45; the dragnet 13:47; unmerciful servant 18:23-35; labourers 20:1-16, two sons 21:28-32; marriage feast 22:1-14; 10 virgins 25:1-13; the talents 25:14-30 Two miracles: 17:24-27; 20:30-34 Nine discourses: 5:1-7:29; 11:28-30; 12:36-37; 16:17-19; 18:15-35; 21:43; 23:1-33; 24:1-25:46; 28:18-20 Six events of His passion: 27:3-11,19,52-53, 62-64, 65-66; 28:2

Purpose of Writing: Matthew intends to prove to the Jews especially the Pharisees and Sadducees who stubbornly refused to accept Jesus as their Messiah, that He is the promised Messiah. More than any other gospel, Matthew quotes the Old Testament frequently to show how Jesus fulfilled the words of the Jewish prophets; he however began by giving a detailed description of Jesus lineage from Abraham to king David. Content Outline: Genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ 1:1 2:23 The ministry of John the Baptist 3:1-12 The baptism and temptation of Jesus 3:13 4:11 Jesus public ministry in Galilee 4:12 18:35 From Galilee to Jerusalem 19:1-20:34 The last week in and near Jerusalem 21:1-27:66 The resurrection and appearances of the Lord 28:1-20 Connections: Matthew quotes more than 60 times from the prophetic passages of the Old Testament using the phrase as was spoken through the prophet(s), to demonstrate how Jesus fulfilled them. Statistics: 28 chapters; 1,071 verses; 23,684 words

Author: John Mark Date and Place: between AD The place is unknown. Theme: Jesus Christ is Jehovah s Servants (Isa 42:1-21; 50:4-11; 52:13-53:12; Zech. 3:8; Mk 10:45; Phil 2:5-8). The servant character is seen throughout the book. There is no genealogy of Christ, for who gives a genealogy of a servant? It is a gospel of deeds and works rather than words. It was given by divine inspiration, such as luke and Paul received from God (Lk. 1:3; Gal. 1:12-16; 2:2), and not from human source as alleged by some. Details of Christ s fatigue (4:38; 11:12; 14:36); sympathies (6:34; 8:2); love (10: 21); composure (4:38-40; 15:5); solitude (1:35; 6:3-32); wonder (6:6); grief (3:5); sighing (7:34; 8:12); anger (3:5; 10:14); and other facts (1:35; 3:7; 4:1,38; 6:7,40; 12:41; 13:3 etc) emphasizes the Servant idea of the book. Purpose of Writing: his targeted audience appears to be the Roman believers, particularly the Gentiles. He wrote as a pastor to Christians who previously had heard and believed the Gospel (Rom 1:8). He aims at getting the believers to see Jesus Christ as the Servant of the Lord and Savior of the world, thereby strengthening their faith in the face of severe persecution and to teach them what it meant to be His disciples.

He was a Jew and perhaps the Lucius of Romans 16:21; Acts 13:1. If so, he was related to Paul. Date and Place: about AD Place unknown. Theme: Jesus Christ is Jehovah s ideal Man (Zech 6:12). Hence, dependent upon the Father (3:21); a friend of outcasts (5:29; 7:29-37); compassionate (7:13; 13:1); neighborly (10:30); etc. 38 Sections not in the other Gospels: Six miracles (5:4-11; 7:11-18; 13:11-17; 14:1-6; 17:11-19; 22:50-51). 15 Only 7 incidents are in common with other gospels: John s word, the last supper, the anointing at Bethany, the Passion, the resurrection, feeding the 5,000, and walking on the sea. All other events are peculiar to John. Altogether the 4 gospels give a well rounded out conception of Jesus Christ as the ideal King, ideal Servant, ideal Man, and the ideal God. Purpose of Writing: The purpose was clearly cited in John 20:31. The prominent feature is the long doctrinal sections of 1:16 8:39; God s method of dealing with the Jews and Gentiles individually is pictured in this doctrinal section and their relationship dispensationally is given in 9:1 11:36; The rest of the book is showing the result of salvation.
