Work began on the site in 1987 and the new church was dedicated in It is the only church in the UK that is owned equally by the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church and the two worshipping communities share its use. We recently celebrated our 25 th anniversary Better together! Warrington East Team of Churches

Section 1 Why is our church so special? When this part of Warrington New Town was being developed in the late 1970s, three primary schools were planned. One would be a state school, one would be Roman Catholic funded and one would be Church of England Aided. As the population started to grow the two church schools started to be used as places of worship for their congregations. As development at Blackbrook and Cinnamon Brow neared completion and the population grew to its current level of about 10,000, it was realised that each of the two churches could not continue to worship in the schools and thoughts began to turn to building separate churches. This was at the time of Bishop David Sheppard, Bishop of Liverpool and Archbishop Derek Worlock, also in Liverpool, and their vision of the two traditions working BETTER TOGETHER. Out of this vision it was decided to build a new church on the site on St Bridget s Close, the ownership to be shared between both churches equally and for the building to be used on a shared basis. After much prayer and careful planning to recognise the sensitivities of both churches, the two Liverpool Bishops fulfilled this vision at the Dedication of the new Church of the Resurrection and of St. Bridget on 17 th September

The Team Vicar we would like to have Section 2 Our vision is: Through friendly worship for all, to grow in Christ, to grow in faith and to grow in strength. Due to the size of Blackbrook and Cinnamon Brow, and the number of families in difficult circumstances, it is hoped to appoint someone who has experience of the role of Parish Priest in a busy parish, who has a degree of maturity with energy, drive and enthusiasm. The strength, skills and sense of commitment and service that a Team Vicar brings to the parish are attributes, which we consider to be most important. With two Readers in post and many people taking an active role in the church, the lay participation in both the worship and management of the church is well developed and must be encouraged. Additionally, our ideal Team Vicar should - Be guided by the Holy Spirit Be dedicated to the Lord s Service Be an innovative preacher and teacher Be committed to the church s mission plan and the growth of the church Have a sense of discernment and be prayerful and sensitive to people s needs Be able to stimulate, challenge and open eyes to new visions Be a good communicator and a good listener Continue the development of children s and youth ministry Continue the pastoral care for all ages Encourage vocations, both ordained and lay It is envisaged that some activities, e.g., Baptism preparation, Confirmation preparation and Marriage preparation may be centralised within the Team and where possible the holding of services and events involving the whole team, for example at Epiphany, on Ash Wednesday and at Patronal Festivals. Additionally, there are occasions when similar cooperation is required with the people of St Bridget s church see Section 4 below. Our Church Wardens Our Readers 4

Section 3 About our parish Our parish is located in East Warrington with the M6 and M62 only short distances away. Travel between the parish and other parts of Warrington are well served by bus routes and a railway station used by commuters to Manchester or Liverpool is close by. In recent years, there has been strong growth in employment opportunities within the area covered by the Team. There is also easy access to open countryside. Most of the housing in the parish was built during the 1970s and 1980s and the parish includes a substantial area whose residents are socially deprived. Approximately 75% of the housing in the parish is privately owned, the remainder being either Council rented or owned by various Housing Associations. There is some sheltered housing for the elderly and an intermediate care facility operated by Warrington Borough Council and the Bridgewater Trust. There are three primary schools in the area, all with good reputations and well attended with few vacancies. Two of the primary schools have nurseries attached. These three schools feed two senior schools in the area, the one in Birchwood is within our Team boundary, the other is University Academy of Warrington, which is adjacent to the border of our Parish and within the Team boundary. In addition the Warrington Campus of the University of Chester is located in our parish. Our new Team Vicar will have an important part to play within the Governing Body of the CofE Aided Primary School, usually as Chair. It is hoped that from this primary school and the state primary school (Brook Acre) the children and parents will continue to be encouraged and supported in taking an active part in the life and worship of the church. The new Team Vicar will also have the opportunity to take a very active part in the life of the Church of England school with regular Eucharistic Services and assemblies being held for children and parents. Children from Brook Acre School also come to church at important times in the Church s calendar although these are non-eucharistic Services. The Vicarage in Cinnamon Brow is a large modern house with 4 good sized bedrooms, one with an ensuite, a family bathroom, lounge, separate dining room, kitchen and utility room plus downstairs cloakroom, study and garage. The house is centrally heated and has good sized gardens. The Vicarage is about 5 minutes walk from the church. 5

Section 4 Our relationship with the Church of St Bridget The legal Sharing Agreement provided for the creation of a Joint Council to manage the whole church complex. This Council comprises the incumbent and five lay members of each church and meetings are held every couple of months. Each church pays a monthly sum to the Joint Council which uses these funds to look after all aspects of the maintenance and improvement of the complex, and provides and pays for items which are shared such as janitorial supplies, candles and the gas, electric and water utilities, insurance, etc. Members of both congregations share duties such as cleaning, flower arranging, Christmas decorations etc. There is a small Prayer through singing group developing with members from both churches. We also have a monthly lunch outing with members from both churches attending. There are Roman Catholic Masses at 5.30pm each Saturday afternoon and at 11.15am each Sunday morning. Weekday Masses are also held at 10.00am each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. From time to time, but especially on a date near to 17 th September and on Remembrance Sunday, joint services are held with members from both churches attending. 6

Section 5 About our church 1 The church and its people At our church, we are a committed, supportive and welcoming community. We are open to people of all ages and the building is accessible to people with disabilities. There are currently 58 members on the Electoral Roll with average weekly attendance of 45 adults and 6 children. Our church subscribes to the Bishop s Growth Agenda. The Parochial Church Council oversees the management of the Church of the Resurrection. Sub-committees exist to discuss matters referred to them by the PCC, the most active of which are: Pastoral Committee Social & Fundraising Committee Finance Committee An active group paying particular attention to the sick, the housebound, those in hospital, those who are lonely and those in need. There is a volunteer led car rota for people who find it difficult to get to church unaided. We hold 3 Pastoral Services each year, two for the elderly and housebound and one for families who had children baptized in the previous year. A hard-working committee whose main aim is to foster fellowship within the community in the form of social gatherings varying in content throughout the year, and includes the annual Christmas Fayre. A group working with the Treasurer, which manages the financial affairs of the church, supervising the income and expenditure of church funds. Although we manage our finances on a break-even basis, our Parish Share for 2014 was paid in full and on time thanks to the generosity of our people and Gift Aid tax refunds. We are pleased that 2014 saw a slight increase in giving, and the PCC has recently agreed to join the Parish Giving Scheme operated by the Diocese. 7

There is an active branch of the Mothers Union with monthly meetings, a regular weekly Drop In for coffee and a chat and a very well supported family/carers and toddlers group called Cinnamon Brow Toddlers that meets every Friday morning during term time. A small Prayer Group meets once per month. Our regular Service Times are as follows: Sundays 9.30am Parish Eucharist Last Sunday of 9.30am Family Service Together at the Eucharist the month where the format of the Service is more accessible to families with young children Tuesdays 7.00pm Holy Communion Thursdays 10.30am Holy Communion The various alternatives provided by Common Worship are used and the hymn books are Laudate and Mission Praise. We have a long tradition of lay involvement as Sidespeople, in the leading of Intercessions, Eucharistic Ministers and the reading of the Lesson. A Vestry Hour is held every Tuesday from pm. We are a Fair Trade church. The church has 2 Liverpool Cathedral representatives, 2 Team representatives and 2 Deanery representatives. 8

2 The church and the community Whilst the majority of the buildings in our parish are domestic properties, other facilities include an attractive local shop, the Farm Club that is a licensed community centre and 3 other public houses. Adjacent to our parish boundary there is a small shopping centre which also includes a Doctor s surgery, a Pharmacy, a Dentist, a Public Library and the offices of a Credit Union. Our annual Christmas Fayre is held in our local school and the teachers, pupils and parents are actively involved in supporting this. The Governing Body of the Church of England school includes several members of our congregation and two others are Governors at the state school Brook Acre. 3 The church and its buildings The church has a useful hall attached and the whole complex includes a new kitchen and toilet facilities including disabled and baby changing. There is an upstairs room for meetings of up to 16 people, together with a large loft storage area. The church is used for all Services according to an agreed timetable. Whilst we normally hold Baptisms on the second Sunday of each month, other Services such as Marriages and Funerals are by arrangement. The hall is used for a variety of purposes such as: Sunday mornings Tea/coffee/biscuits/chat after our morning Service The same after the Roman Catholic Mass Tuesdays Mothers Union (2 nd Tuesday each month) Roman Catholic Ladies Guild - fortnightly Wednesday mornings Drop in for tea/coffee/biscuits/chat Credit Union transactions open to the public Friday mornings Cinnamon Brow Toddlers (Family/carers and Tots - in term time) Friday evenings Nugent Care Society activity sessions Saturday evenings Bingo sessions (second Saturday monthly) Various meetings take place in the Hall, e.g., Parochial Church Council, Study Groups and choir. The Church of England Aided primary school is licensed for worship and Eucharists are held there from time to time. The church is accessible for people using a wheelchair and a hearing loop is installed. 10 4 Our Church School Cinnamon Brow Church of England Primary school Cinnamon Brow Church of England Primary school is a larger than average school with a strong Christian ethos. The school s admission number is 45 with a 60 place nursery. Currently there are 377 children in school. We also have an Infant Development Unit called The Clover with 8 places for children with a range of learning difficulties from all over Warrington. We have over 60 staff that are all highly nurturing and ambitious for the success of all children. Our children come from very mixed backgrounds, with 23% eligible for free school meals, slightly above national average. Although the profile of the school appears to be broadly in line with average in terms of deprivation, we have many vulnerable children who we support via the Family Support Worker. At Cinnamon Brow CE Primary school the children are at the heart of all we do and are our first priority. We aim for high standards of behaviour and academic achievement, aiming to send out into the world good citizens who care about others and can make a positive contribution to society and their community. Christian values are at the heart of all we do and believe in; specifically our focus is on trust, tolerance, respect and understanding. We aim to educate today s child for tomorrow s world. We are a fully inclusive school where everyone s needs are met and differences celebrated. We were judged by Ofsted as good in July 2013 and outstanding in its last two SIAS inspections (2008 and 2011) and its recent health check (September 2014). School holds the Church Partnership Award 1 and is working towards Award 2. The new Head teacher, Tracy Gunn took up post in September 2014 following a period of substantial change in the staffing. 11 Section 6 The wider context The Church of the Resurrection is a member of the Warrington East Team Ministry. The other members are:- The parish of Christ Church, Padgate The parish of Birchwood and Woolston More details about these churches will be found later in this document. There is a long history of cooperation between the four churches, and our own Mission Plan is incorporated into a Team Mission Plan, which has been submitted to the Diocese through the Deanery. During 2014, members from the Team churches led an Alpha course and this was followed in the autumn by a Discipleship course. Both were well attended. Looking further afield, we are involved in raising funds for the Children s Society (especially through Christingle), Christian Aid, NSPCC (including toys at Christmas), the Angel Tree Project (Christmas gifts for children of prisoners), the United Society (US) and others from time to time. The Church of the Resurrection, with the Church of St Bridget and 8 other Christian churches in East Warrington, is a member of Churches Together in Warrington East. Meetings are usually held every two months. Churches Together sponsors the annual Padgate Walking Day (a form of Whit Walk ) which is held on a Saturday late in June each year - the date is variable and depends on the timing of Warrington Walking Day. Padgate Walking Day is considered to be the third largest community event in Warrington after Warrington Walking Day and Disability Awareness Day. Churches Together make arrangements to recognise the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and the various churches also come together to recognise Women s World Day of Prayer. Additionally, members attend the 2 Cathedrals Service in Liverpool which is held every other year (next time in 2016). Padgate Walking Day A group from the Alpha Course 11

Brook Acre Community Primary School We are a one form entry school with an additional 52 place nursery. Numbers on roll have grown steadily during recent years and are maintained with admission waiting lists held on most classes as the school has become a real hub of the local community. Current Number on Roll is 259. The school is situated in extensive grounds that have been thoughtfully developed for play and curriculum activities that lead to active and successful playtimes and extensive opportunity for outdoor learning. We are lucky to be situated on a shared site with The Orchard Children s Centre which provides a range of services for families and children, as well as Birch Grove, a private day nursery providing child care, 2 and 3 year old placements and wrap around care of a group of our children outside of the school day. We work together as a shared site to provide extensive support for families within our community our doors are always open for advice, signposting or simply to listen. Brook Acre received a Good outcome, with outstanding behaviour and safety at the last inspection in October 2013 (report available on the OfSTED website). We are well on our way to outstanding and are enjoying every minute of our improvement journey. This is an exciting time in the life of Brook Acre Community Primary School. There is a committed team of staff who work hard to provide the best possible educational advantages for children, many of whom have experienced social deprivation. We, as a team, strive to forge strong links with parents and the wider community. Parents are regularly invited to be a part of our school life, whether it s coming in to see a maths or phonics lesson, joining us on a trip out of school, coming to watch a performance or celebration event or simply coming to join their child for lunchtime. Parent contributions are truly valued and enable shared working in the best interests of every child. We are situated in an area of high social deprivation with 65% of our pupils eligible for Free School Meals, which is over three times the national average. Inclusive education and a belief that every individual is capable of great things are at the heart of the ethos of our school. The children, staff and parents form a close-knit family in which we all truly care about the success and well-being of each individual, with high expectations permeating throughout. The children in Key Stage 2 attend acts of worship at The Church of the Resurrection at least twice a year. For more information please visit our school website 12

Christ Church, Padgate Christ Church, Padgate is a thriving worshipping community with, we believe, a strong sense of service to others, a welcoming outlook to newcomers and visitors and an enjoyment in our fellowship together. We consider ourselves to be middle-of-the-road Anglicans using Common Worship for our services, but open to new ideas. We work well with the other churches in Warrington East Team, and also with the local Methodist Church, where we are represented at each others council meetings. We also take an active part in Churches Together (CT) in East Warrington. Christ Church was consecrated in The interior was reordered in the 1960 s by the distinguished church architect George Pace. Our congregation mix reflects the demographics of the area, but we would love to have more young families. There are over 200 people on the electoral roll some living in adjoining parishes who have historic connections with Christ Church. We have several very well established activities, including the Mothers Union which meets twice a month; and Playtimers, a Carer and Toddler group held weekly in the nearby community centre. We see Playtimers as a strong part of our mission to the community. Very strong links exist between the church and our CofE school which is just across the road. Also, over the past year we have started a monthly Active Church Sunday Service consisting of half an hour of themed practical activities for youngsters and families to complete, followed by a short service on the same theme with songs and prayers. This has become very popular, with over 100 people participating, and we hope it will continue to grow. From Monday to Thursday mornings our coffee shop is open in church. This has been running for seven years, and not only meets a need for Padgate people to get together, but also enables the church to be open to all who want a place of reflection and prayer. Social events include an annual Pantomime in February, a Garden Party in July and a Teddy Bears picnic in August. We also have a monthly Men s Group, a Choral Group and a Cricket Team. We support NSPCC, Christian Aid, US, Fairtrade and other charities. Our monthly church magazine, Grapevine contains a range of local articles and profiles, and it showcases pupils work from our school. It has a circulation of over 850 copies. 13

Parish of Birchwood and Woolston The United Parish of Birchwood and Woolston is Warrington Deanery s newest Parish, created in November 2014 by combining the Parishes of Woolston and Birchwood within the Warrington East Team. Both parishes experienced a fall in attendance following the service time changes necessary to accommodate the sharing of a Priest from At Birchwood, attendance fell to the point where it was not practical to continue as an independent parish. Under our Team Vicar; Rev Laura Montgomery, the United Parish is expecting to continue traditions of both parishes in terms of worship, social and fundraising events and links with the communities. To this end both PCCs began to meet jointly before the formal union. The Church of the Ascension in Woolston is the Parish Church of the new Parish with the Church of the Transfiguration at Birchwood being retained for occasional services, for example at Christmas and Easter. It is also used for worship by the Birchwood CofE Primary School pupils and this school link is seen as the foundation for creating a new community of worshippers in the Birchwood area. Both churches are less than 50 years old, are wheelchair accessible, and have movable furniture that enables some flexibility in worship. There is also a parish hall, in Woolston, known as the Mission. Our monthly all-age Service has proved popular with families and younger members. It is non-eucharistic with elements designed to appeal to young and old alike - modern hymns, sketches, etc. It has proved popular with those who feel uncomfortable with a full Eucharistic Service. At Woolston there are crèche facilities available in the Lady Chapel if needed. The Service is broadcast in the Lady Chapel for parents to follow. Our annual Christingle service (picture) is also very popular! We have a regularly maintained website The church sponsors a Monday evening Youth Club. The Woolston Ladies Group holds monthly meetings in the Mission hall. Contacts are maintained with the two CofE primary schools in the United Parish and links are maintained with Birchwood High School and the recently set up Kings Academy. We believe that more outreach is necessary, particularly to those in need, for example, the sick in hospital or the housebound. A volunteer visiting group has been suggested, to allow follow-up visits after baptism (in addition to letters currently sent out on the 1 st and 4 th anniversaries), or to those who have been recently bereaved. A substantial proportion of our funds are raised during our Christmas and Summer Fayres and other social activities including a monthly quiz. We are up to date with our Parish Share. 14

Appendices 1 Area Dean s Statement Warrington is a great place to be a member of the clergy! The Team of Warrington East and the Church of the Resurrection presents an exciting place to lead and minister to this important part of the town. The new Team Vicar will have a creative opportunity to exercise their skills in an exciting way. This is a church with an ecumenical history and outlook. The new priest will be able to build upon what has been developed and to share in what is to come so that the Kingdom values may be extended in this vibrant place within the Team and Deanery. It is also envisaged that the new priest will take an active part in the life and witness of the Deanery of Warrington through their membership and attendance of Chapter and Synod and also reflecting positively through the annual Ministerial Development Review.
