2 Welcome to Year 9 Religious Studies 2016 General Info In Year 9 Religious Studies we will: Have two lessons (90min + 45min) each week. Work towards developing our knowledge and understanding of our Catholic Faith. Link with the HUB themes you will use in your Year 9 class. Have class liturgies. Have a retreat. Begin each class with a prayer or meditation. Do some great learning! Ultimately each of us is called to a relationship with God. This is strengthened through prayer. Prayer at the College will revolve around what we do collectively as a community. Praying at ranks. College Masses Prayer in class Special Liturgies. Marian Devotions. Benediction. Class Masses and Liturgies. Reconciliation. Meditation. Prayers of Intercession. Gathering to pray for those who have died and their families. All Souls and All Saints.

3 Retreats A retreat is an opportunity to spend time outside the normal classroom environment to pray and reflect. It is a chance to connect with God and become aware of his presence in our world, in our lives and the lives of others. Justice Focus: In 2016 we want to focus on those issues facing people as they struggle to live. During Lent we will support the Caritas project and throughout the year we would hope to support the College s projects. More information will be given at ranks. When we are generous in welcoming people and sharing something with them some food, a place in our homes, our time not only do we no longer remain poor: we are enriched. Be positive AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF YEAR 9 RELIGIOUS STUDIES Students can develop their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values through Religious Studies. Students can regularly participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular areas around Religious Studies including retreats and class liturgies that aim to strengthen our Faith. Students can develop ways of linking their knowledge with everyday life. Students can allow increasing knowledge and understanding to build up their faith. Strive for achieve at the highest possible level. To find links between Religious Studies and Other Curriculum levels. ASSESSMENT In class there will be formative assessments to help you build your knowledge and understanding. There will be common end of topic summative assessments. Internal moderation after each assessment samples of work will be bench marked first. Assessment will be then divided up and marked. The grades will be verified by another teacher before the final grade is communicated. This is to ensure that marking is fair. Teachers do not mark their own class. There will be a final examination at the end of the year. The content of this will be told to you by your teacher. Detailed criteria for achievement will be provided with each assessment. 5 2. You need to join your google classrooms as soon as possible: (here is the Year 12 example) Your teacher will take you on a tour of your virtual classroom. 3. You really need to monitor your school Gmail account on a regular basis. We will also run some input on this! 4. You need to gain a working knowledge of google docs, forms, calendar etc.

6 5. Using ipads and desktops is also going to be part of the fun! YEAR 9 TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT SEQUENCE Year 9 Hub Theme WHO AM I? WHO ARE WE? Christians Catholics Marists. Topics in Year 9 Religious Studies: My Catholic Identity: What do Catholics believe? How do Catholics worship? What attitudes and values do Catholics have? What are Marists? How is St Patrick s College going to help my growth as a Christian? MY STORY The purpose of this topic is to invite the students at the beginning of their Secondary School life to make an exploration of their family and cultural backgrounds. By this means they will come to a renewed recognition and appreciation of their heritage and the personal gifts and talents that mark them as unique persons made in God s image. 7 SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION A study of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist aimed at deepening the pupils awareness of what it means to be initiated into the Church, the Body of Christ. Content Outline - Initiation in society and religion - Jewish initiation - The story of Christian initiation - The Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) - Baptism - Confirmation - Eucharist Year 9 Hub Theme SUSTAINABILITY CREATION AND CO-CREATION By studying various Creation stories this topic aims to help pupils appreciate the truths contained in the Creation accounts in Genesis. It also asks pupils to consider their own and others continuing creativity in relation to that of God. Content Outline - Creation stories - Creator of heaven and earth - De-creation - Jesus Christ the new creation - Celebrating the Creator - God s co-creators - World builders - Caring for the environment. Departmental Theme: Who is Jesus? THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JESUS This topic is designed to familiarise students with significant events in the life of Jesus. It also examines the roots of Judaism and the religious, political and social groups of the time. Content Outline - Who is Jesus? - The Land where Jesus walked - Jesus People: their history, religion, religious, political and social groups - The young Jesus - Jesus enters public life - Jesus the Teacher - Jesus the Healer - Jesus the Pray-er - Jesus final days and death - Jesus rises to new life Hub Theme: Who are we as a Church? THE CHURCH S STORY: The Beginnings This topic deals with the story of the early Church in Jerusalem and beyond to 425 AD. It focuses on some significant persons and events of that time. 8 - Persecution - The Christian Empire BEGINNINGS OF THE CHURCH IN AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND The aim of this topic is to make a study of the beginnings of the Church in New Zealand with the purpose of having the students identify and appreciate their spiritual heritage as Catholics in Aotearoa New Zealand. Content Outline may include elements of - The spiritual world of the Maori - Christianity arrives in Aotearoa - Aotearoa s first Catholics - Bishop Pompallier and the Marist Missionaries - Missionary life and work - The Treaty of Waitangi - The Maori response to the Catholic mission - Early religious congregations in Aotearoa-New Zealand HUB THEME- Community Challenge SEE THINK PRAY JUDGE ACT REFLECT Looking at and responding to the needs of others (SOCIAL JUSTICE AND ACTION) SEXUALITY EDUCATION In Year 9 Religious Studies we will follow a programme which will help to build our knowledge of our uniqueness as being created in the image and likeness of God.
