FIVE REVOLUTIONARY DAYS INTRODUCTION The five-day Church Partnership Evangelism (CPE) ministry is going to revolutionize your thinking about evangelism, give you a new perspective on discipleship, enlarge your faith in God, and cause you to stand back in awe at what God has done through a band of simple, but available servants of His. This will be a significant week in your life. You will see the Lord use you to bring many people to Christ. You will make new friends and gain a greater appreciation for the worldwide body of Christ as you work side-by-side in the Lord's harvest. You will rejoice as members of your church are used greatly by God to bring in the harvest that He has prepared. This will also be a significant week in your church's life. Two of the greatest desires of pastors is to see their members actively and effectively sharing their faith, and to see them leading evangelistic Bible Studies. In five short days, you may see more people pray to receive Christ than at any other single time in the history of your church. You will undoubtedly many come to know Christ. More importantly, though, these people will be led to Christ by your church members. Not only will your members learn how to share the Gospel, but some of them will take the next step and start leading follow-up Bible Studies. Your members will be adequately equipped and engaged in actual evangelism and discipleship. A mobilized membership is one of the deepest joys of any pastor. Our prayer is that you will find this Manual helpful as you prepare your church for a CPE ministry. A WORD ABOUT THE MANUAL This manual is meant for the person who will be leading the CPE ministry from the local church perspective. In most cases, this will be the pastor. In some instances, it may be a leader in the church who will be coordinating the ministry. This Manual provides a step-bystep handbook for you to follow, from Pre-Ministry to Ministry Week to Post-Ministry. It will help you to adequately prepare your church people for the actual ministry. It will also provide you with everything you need to know, and do, in order to successfully host a visiting team that will be working in partnership with you. If you follow the guidelines and instructions set down for you in this Manual, you will have a successful ministry. IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER As one person put it, "no prayer--no power; little prayer--little power; much prayer--much power." The success of the CPE ministry is in direct proportion to the amount of prayer that goes into it. The church members need to be mobilized three months in advance to start praying for the people they will be setting up appointments with during the ministry week. Some special Church Partnership Evangelism

prayer meetings or church corporate prayer times need to be set before the ministry week, for the express purpose of praying for the outreach. Maybe it would be wise to appoint a prayer coordinator for your church, to help mobilize prayer groups and networks. Each member who will be sharing the Gospel during that week should have two prayer partners. Each morning of ministry week, there is time set aside for prayer. And after the ministry is over, it is necessary to continue to pray for those who have made decisions and for the follow-up Bible Studies taking place. PRAYER NEEDS THE LORD: Awe of God the Father Hearts that abide in the Vine Being filled with the Holy Spirit THE LABORERS: God will raise up laborers The visiting team Good communication between team & local church members Boldness Pastors & church leaders will be involved New leadership for new cells & churches Raise up new Bible Study leaders Spiritual, emotional, & physical health Spiritual growth in the ministry Protection for all involved THE LOST: Open doors Holy Spirit preparation Effective testimonies Effective Gospel presentations Many decisions for Christ Decisions by heads of families THE LOGISTICS: Travel for visiting team Flexibility on their parts to our culture Health and Safety THE LION THAT DEVOURS: Victory over Satan Distractions during appointments be minimized Satanic strongholds will fall Church Partnership Evangelism

OVERVIEW OF CPE Statements of CPE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Church Partnership Evangelism mobilizes churches to equip and engage lay people in evangelism, discipleship and church planting. This tool is used in a context that combines members from the sending church and the receiving church in a face-to-face personal evangelism ministry with the intent of expanding the receiving church's impact in a specific area. This results in making disciples and planting churches. STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT A. Commitment to Local Church. We are committed to pursuing development of the ministry through the involvement and participation of local churches. CPE is founded upon the conviction that it is to be a ministry that expands within the infrastructures of the local church. It is dedicated to strengthening the local church at home and abroad by providing it with tools for outreach, discipleship, and cell or church planting. B. Commitment to Mobilizing. We are committed to making our primary priority the equipping and engaging of the national layperson for ministry. By equipping, we mean that we will provide training in the use of the CPE evangelism tool and in the use of the discipleship material. By engaging, we mean that we will provide hands-on, on-the-job opportunities to practice what they have learned in evangelism and discipleship during the week of the ministry. C. Commitment to Evangelism. We are committed to evangelizing the lost through verbal sharing of the Gospel through planned appointments or through door-to-door visitations. The Visiting team member participates through sharing his testimony, while the local church member participates by using 10-question guide for a Gospel dialogue with the unsaved person/s. D. Commitment to Discipleship. We are committed to making disciples. We will prioritize the follow-up of new believers during the week of the ministry above any further outreach or evangelism. We will make an effort to pay at least one follow-up (discipleship) visit to every individual indicating a decision for Christ during the week of the ministry. Church Partnership Evangelism

STATEMENT OF STRATEGY A. Pre-Ministry: A Visiting team from a local church will be recruited to work in partnership with the members of a receiving local church. Consultation with receiving local church in preparation for the ministry will be done 4-6 months in advance. The local church will mobilize its people to strategically begin praying for lost people with whom they have a relationship. Training will take place in the local church, in advance, in the use of the CPE evangelism tool and the use of the discipleship material. B. Ministry: Each Visiting team member will partner with a host Christian from the local church and present the Gospel in a predetermined locality through pre-arranged appointments or doorto-door visitations. Ideally, the national Christian will have prayed for family members, neighbors, workmates or friends, whom he/she has already developed a trusting relationship with, whom they will then visit. These local church members are to covenant to pray daily for these individual prior to the ministry. (See Appendix F) The claims of Christ are presented through the national believer's friendship connection, and through the printed bilingual tract and testimony. Those individuals making a profession of faith will be prioritized for a follow-up visit before the end of the 5-day ministry, so that a ministry of discipleship may be initiated. On the sixth day, a celebration party may be held in the evening, with the purpose of inviting those who made a decision during the week so that they can get to know some of the church members. C. Post-Ministry: With the long-term impact in view, every new believer will be followed up for the purpose of discipleship. We encourage that this process begin with a personal focus and grow towards the emergence of a cell group or a Bible Study group, led by the local church member. The goal in mind is to see these new believers become baptized and become members of the local church, and in turn, reaching out to their own networks of influence. Church Partnership Evangelism

TOOLS FOR SUCCESS CPE will provide five tools in order to help each local church member be successful in sharing the Gospel with their contacts: TOOL # 1: PERSONAL TESTIMONY The visiting team member will have prepared his personal testimony in advance, and this will have been translated into the local dialect and put on the back side of the tract. The local church member will read the testimony to those they are they will conducting evangelistic visits with. Even though the local church member will not be sharing his testimony, Appendix "A" of this Manual has information and tips on how to write out a personal testimony. It may be that your church will want to adopt this evangelistic methodology in your regular evangelistic endeavors, or if you send a CPE team from your church on a short term missions trip. TOOL #2: BILINGUAL TRACT The second tool is a bilingual tract. You will find a copy of this tool in Appendix ''B''. On the front is a "generic" testimony. Inside the tract there are a series of 10 questions. These questions guide you in a dialogue aimed at presenting the Gospel. The last two questions help to determine if the person has understood the decision he has made. When someone makes a decision for Christ, ask him for his name and address. Write this down on the tear-off portion of the tract. Also, set up an appointment to go back and visit the new believer. This is a very important part of the ministry! Your goal should be to follow-up personally with as many of these new believers as possible. Early in the week all your visits will be first-time evangelistic visits. Towards the end of the week, most of your visits should be follow-up discipleship visits. TOOL #3: DISCIPLESHIP MATERIALS To help in these follow-up visits, we will give you a third tool, some follow-up Bible Studies. Make sure to give them the first of the follow-up study before you leave any new convert. This will be the lesson you will study more completely upon your return visit. You may wish to show them how to use their Bible, as well as simply directing them to the table of contents, showing them how to find a reference. This also communicates to them that studying the Bible is important. Notes and tips on how to do the follow-up visit can be found in Appendix "D". Church Partnership Evangelism

TOOL #4: NEW TESTAMIENT The visiting team member will give each new believer a New Testament as a gift. When the New Testament is handed out, make a short ceremony out of it. The visiting team member will write a short dedication, or "remembrance," including the name of the new believer, the date of the decision made, and his name as the one who gave it. This simple ceremony will make their day of salvation even sweeter to them, and help them to realize the importance of the decision they have made. TOOL #5: TRAINING GUIDES You will find in this Manual training guides on the proper use of the tract (Appendix "C") and how to use the discipleship material (Appendix "D"). Training should be given in advance of the ministry on how to use the tract and how to use the follow-up material. These five tools should prove to be invaluable in your evangelistic efforts, as you seek to reach your friends and loved ones for the Lord. Church Partnership Evangelism

PRE-MINISTRY A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF A WEEK AND NOTES FOR PREPARATION The week of a Church Partnership Evangelism outreach ministry is carried out in the following order. The team arrives usually on a Friday evening or Saturday morning. Saturday night a small prayer meeting of the leadership from the churches and the team usually takes place at the hotel. Sunday the teams are picked up at the hotel around 8:30 in the morning and transported to the churches in which they will be working. Following the morning worship service, they are provided lunch and then gather with the national church workers for training in the early afternoon (approx. 2 p.m.). After this, pairs of workers are formed and sent out to the first afternoon appointments. There is a break for the evening meal around 5 p.m. Appointments then resume into the evening or the evening outreach service takes place. The team is brought back to the hotel around 9 p.m. Each morning from then on through Thursday the team is picked up from the hotel at around 8:30 am. They will eat lunch, and the evening meal in the homes or the church of the fellowship in which they work. 9 to 10 a.m. is usually set aside for training in evangelism and discipleship. There are breaks to eat and rest between 12 to 2 p.m. and between 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The time blocks for evangelistic appointments and later for follow up visits during the day are 10 am to 12 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 6:15 p.m. on into the evening. A ministry that begins with 100% evangelism on the first day usually ends with nearly 100% discipleship on the 5 th and last day. Church Partnership Evangelism

Notes for preparation: Please make sure that you have prepared in the following 8 areas. You should begin your preparation no less than three months out from the campaign. 1. Select the area or areas outreach work will take place: Even if you are planning on doing mostly all outreach through appointments, you should have a back up area for doing door to door if the appointments don t all come together. This is a way in which God can also guide a team to his divine appointments. In this ministry you will contact people who would never hear if working through the channels of your natural relationships. 2. In order to work off appointments it is most important that your church begin establishing contacts for such appointments well ahead of time, although the appointments themselves should not be made until with in a week prior to the outreach ministry. The information in point two is most necessary for a successful time of ministry. This will help your people learn to develop meaningful relationships with lost people and to apply intense and specific prayer to their lives. This must take place to become a soul winner. A. You must begin work with the members of your church individually, in small groups or as a whole to identify and make a list of non-christians with whom they have relationships. Those relationships will fall with in one of four categories; neighbors, friends, family, or work associates. This needs to be done at least three months before the team arrives. B. Your church members should be encouraged to come up with at least two names in each category. If they cannot come up with at least four names altogether you need to begin praying with them that God would assist them in developing relationships with lost people. (See Prayer Covenant Appendix F) Church Partnership Evangelism

C. Once having assisted your people in making a list of names you should organize regular prayer times for these individuals. You need to schedule organized times for community prayer for these people. Also your people should commit to praying daily for the people on their list. Teach your people to pray for them in specific ways. 1) They should pray for their immediate needs, 2) they should pray that God would bless these people, they should pray that God would give the Christian an opportunity to express Christ s love to them. 3) They should contact these people and let them know they wish to pray for them and ask them in what ways they could pray for God s blessings in their lives. 4) They should pray that God would begin drawing them to Himself. 3. The members of the church that participate in the visitation and in the services during the outreach ministry should be trained in the use of the testimony tracts, the presentation of the gospel and be prepared to use the discipleship material. (However training will be provided each day of the campaign in the use of the tract and the discipleship material in order to reinforce the training that has been done or to offer it for the first time to those who have not received the training. Remember, we are not wanting to have rushed gospel presentations but to use the material to have a meaningful dialogue with non-christians where understanding and sincere decisions to receive Christ or to not receive Him take place.) You should have a copy of the material explaining the proper use of the tract and how to disciple a new believer. If you don t, please let us know and we will get this to you. We suggest that you make room in your Sunday School time to train your people. 4. Organize ahead of time your strategy for follow up. There will be professions of faith made during the time of ministry. It would be wise to practice with your church members by doing role playing in the use of the tract and in leading someone in a discipleship lesson. Let your people know that the goal is not decisions but discipleship. Our commitment to you is that we will make this our goal during the time of ministry. Church Partnership Evangelism

5. Remember you will need to arrange round trip transportation to and from the hotel to the airport and to and from the hotel to the field on workdays. 6. Meals for the day (breakfast will be provided at the hotel for the team) should be arranged for the five days of the campaign. A meal around noon and a light snack in the evening will be enough. (We will leave you with enough money to cover the cost of these meals.) 7. Recruit translators for the team or at least be sure there is a translator available for each day and each church involved. It is not necessary that the national Christian speak English to work in the outreach event but it is necessary that each church have a translator present during the ministry. 8. I would suggest that it would be a good idea to address the CPE outreach ministry in three stages. Stage One: Preparation and PRAYER Stage Two: Participation and PRAYER Stage Three: Preservation and PRAYER Conclusion: God will bless and it is our great anticipation that this will result a ministry where together we make disciple making disciples and plant Church planting Churches. 14 TIMELINE OF ACTIVITIES This is Stage 1: Prayer and Preparation. Neglecting to spend significant amounts of time in prayer during the pre-ministry period will almost certainly have an adverse effect on the desired outcome. Mobilizing your church members for prayer is just as important as mobilizing them for evangelism and discipleship. 6 MONTHS PRE-MINISTRY A. TURN IN CPE APPLICATION FORM TO CPE COORDINATOR (See Forms A ) This simply gives information on the church, shows the requirements necessary for participation in a CPE ministry, and signifies the pastor s willingness to be involved in such a ministry. B. DETERMINE APPROXIMATE DATES OF CPE MINISTRY Typically, five consecutive days are scheduled for the ministry, running from Sunday to Thursday. In addition, two days are set aside for rest and relaxation (one before the outreach ministry and one after). Be prepared for a slight adjustment to the ministry dates at this time stage. C. DETERMINE APPROXIMATE SIZE OF CPE TEAM Teams working in a local church will likely be no larger than Six. This allows for an effective discipleship experience and for administrative control. It also assures that no local church will be overwhelmed by too large of a team or by unmanageable results issuing from a ministry week. These team members expect to be doing visitation with members of your church morning, afternoon and early evening. Make sure you don t ask for more than you can use. 3 MONTHS PRE-MINISTRY A. CHURCH MEMBERS START PRAYING FOR CONTACTS For church members who have never shared the Gospel before, it can be a frightening experience. Therefore, it is best to approach this in two steps: first, assure they have entered into the prayer covenant; second, prepare the church member for using the 10 question guide to sharing the gospel. B. SELECT FOLLOW-UP (DISCIPLESHIP) MATERIALS & PURCHASE Determine what materials your church wants to use for follow-up Bible Studies. Church Partnership Evangelism will make available to you their 10 lesson new believer, discipleship materials Essential Truths. This material is specifically written for lay Church Partnership Evangelism

believers to use with new Christians. With each lesson there is provided preparation prompts for the lay Christian. (See website You may choose to use different material. In looking for quality Bible Study materials, there are five things one should keep in mind: C. BUY NEW TESTAMENTS Everybody who prays to receive Christ will receive an New Testament. You will need to buy 10 to 25 New Testaments for every visiting team member. The CPE team will be paying for these. Talk to the CPE Coordinator in advance to see how to pay for these initially. Allow adequate time to obtain these as often times the local bookstores may be out of stock for a while. 2 MONTHS PRE-MINISTRY A. ARRANGE LODGING FOR CPE TEAM Research the different lodging options in our city. The main criterion is that the visiting team needs to be together. This eliminates having them stay in church member s homes (unless it is a really big home). In most cases, they will stay in a hotel/pension house. If there are none in your town, then other arrangements will need to be made. The decision of lodging will usually be jointly made with the CPE Coordinator. Here are some factors to consider: 1. Is it air-conditioned? 2. Is there a desk or table in the room? 3. Is there adequate closet/drawer space? 4. Is there a clean western restroom with sink and shower capability? 5. Does the hotel provide a breakfast to its guest or is there a eating establishment close by for the team members to have a morning meal. In researching hotels/pension houses, make sure you find out if the price includes any taxes/service charges, or if the price excludes that. Also, ask for any discounts. Many times a hotel will give a 10-20% discount to a large group that is staying several days. Consider the proximity of the hotel to eating establishments also. Make reservations for the hotel well in advance. Usually the hotel will not require any deposit for that to happen. B. TRAIN CHURCH MEMBERS IN TRACT USE (Appendix C ) One of the main goals of the CPE ministry is to mobilize the local church member to share the Gospel with their built-in relationships. Therefore, the member needs to be as fully trained and prepared as possible. Keep in mind that training and preparation also breeds confidence. Church Partnership Evangelism

For this reason, a two hour seminar needs to be conducted for your church members two months in advance of the ministry on how to use the question evangelistic tract. This is all spelled out in detail in the Proper Use of the Tract (Appendix C). You will want to give a copy to each member who attends the seminars that they can follow along. Following the lecture time, a role-play presentation can be done from the tract, then the members should be paired off in two s or three s for practicing. In the ensuing two months before the ministry, there should be opportunities for those who are trained to use the tract in real situations, while on visitation or in Bible Studies. C. TRAIN CHURCH MEMBERS IN USE OF FOLLOW-UP MATERIALS (Appendix D ) This will most likely be a multi-session training and an on-going training. Some churches may already have their members trained in the use of specific follow-up material. That is great. But if not, after selecting the follow-up materials to be used, an intensive training will need to take place to prepare the church member to do the follow-up. We suggest you use the first lessons in your own small groups or Sunday School classes as a part of your preparation. D. DEVELOP CONTACT LIST FROM MEMBERS (Forms "B") For every CPE team member involved in the ministry, you need to generate about 25 names of people to be visited. If the CPE team is made up of six members, that would mean you need a list of 150 names. That sounds quite impossible to do, but actually it is fairly easy IF you mobilize your members to make and keep the prayer covenant. If you have an adult church attendance of 40 people, and half of them participated in the CPE ministry, and each of those 20 people came up with a list of 8 people to visit, you would have a list of 160. (see sample worksheet under Forms "B"). E. ASSIGN MEMBER OF CHURCH AS MINISTRY SECRETARY Get a volunteer or appoint someone in the church as the "Ministry Secretary." This person needs to be good with details and able to follow-up the church members. This person also needs to be available for the whole week of the ministry. It is best if the pastor does not serve in this capacity as he will have plenty of other responsibilities during the week. Responsibilities of Ministry Secretary: 1. Distribute the "Contacts Worksheet" (Forms "B") to each member and then collect them once they are filled out (approximately 1-2 months in advance of ministry). 2. Encourage all members participating in the ministry to set up appointments with their contacts, preferably 1-2 weeks in advance. 3. Hand out two (2) copies of the "Weekly Planning Calendar" (Forms "C") to each participant and have them fill in the days and time of day that they have appointments. Church Partnership Evangelism

4. One copy they keep and one copy is returned to you. 5. From these Weekly Planning Calendars that are returned to you, make a list of all of the visitations to take place on Sunday afternoon, then Sunday evening, then Monday morning, etc. 6. Starting on the second day, the teams will begin having follow-up visits to those who prayed to receive Christ the first day. The follow-up visits take priority over any new evangelism. At the end of each day, the church members (or maybe the CPE members) will turn in to you all of their follow-up visits for the following day. 7. Then you can determine what teams need to go where for the next day and at what time. 1 MONTH PRE-MINISTRY A. CLEAR CHURCH CALENDAR OF ALL ACTIVITIES Everything on the church calendar should be canceled from Sunday through Friday night, with the exception of the morning worship service. This is a very intensive, six day evangelistic ministry. The pastor and the church members need to devote all of their time and energy towards it. Bible Studies, prayer meetings, cell groups, youth meetings, Staff meetings, etc, need to all be canceled for that week. This includes the pastoral staff also. The pastor and other full-time workers in the church need to clear their schedule completely in order to devote their time to the ministry. If the pastor does not lead by example, the congregation will not follow in giving their 100% effort in this ministry. The pastor should try to do advance sermon preparation so that he doesn't have to worry about preparing a sermon for the Sunday following the CPE ministry. B. PLAN FOR MEALS IN CHURCH MEMBERS HOMES (OPTIONAL) The CPE team will be eating breakfast at the hotel. Lunch and the evening meal for Sunday through Thursday is to be provided by the church. This is one way to create more togetherness and develop deeper relationships between your church members and the CPE team members. The CPE team will provide the money for these meals. It may be that two or three church families will want to go in together in preparing a meal. This is optional because we don't want this to become such a stressor on the family that they devote all their energies to the meal and are unable to participate in the ministry itself. C. ARRANGE FOR SOME RECREATION/SIGHT -SEEING/FREE TIME FOR CPE TEAM Normally the Friday following the ministry event is a free day for the CPE team. Think of some things that the team could do on this day. It may be sight-seeing or going to the beach or some recreational activity, or some special attraction in your town/city. They will have money available if it is something that costs, like an entrance fee at a beach resort. Some examples of things done in the past are taking a trip to a lake, hiking to water falls, visiting Church Partnership Evangelism

tourist sites in the city, doing native shopping, taking a boat ride out to an island, visiting a farm and drinking coconut juice right out of the shell, snorkeling at the beach, and visiting a bird sanctuary. D. DETERMINE HOW CPE TEAM WILL PARTICIPATE IN SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICE If you want a CPE team member to preach in the worship service, this needs to be communicated to them well in advance. Other areas of potential involvement by the CPE team members may be a group song, testimony, and special music. Communicate with the CPE Coordinator, or directly with the team, to determine what they are capable and willing to do. They can greatly enhance your service for that one Sunday. 1 WEEK PRE-MINISTRY A. CHURCH MEMBERS MAKE APPOINTMENTS WITH CONTACTS They will use two different sheets to aid in this process. The "Contacts Worksheet" (Forms ''B'') is where they listed all of their non-christian relationships, from family members to neighbors to workmates/c1assmates to other mends. From this list they will seek to make appointments with for a visitation sometime during the ministry week (remember that the ministry starts on Sunday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. and goes through Thursday evening). Those who commit to an appointment will be written down on the "Weekly Planning Calendar" (Forms "C") for the day and time of appointment. This sheet will be made out in duplicate with one copy going to the Ministry Secretary. From this Weekly Planning Calendar, each church member will be able to keep track of his appointments and followups during the week. B. PREPARE TRANSPORTATION FUNDS The CPE team members will be covering the costs for all public transportation during the ministry, including the fares for the local church members they will be accompanying. But they will need lots of small bills to pay public transportation fares. This will be given to the CPE team leader to hand out to his members. Sometimes the CPE Coordinator will take care of this responsibility, so communicate with him. C. CONFIRM ALL MATERIALS ARE ON-SITE AND READY TO BE USED This includes New Testaments, tracts, tract use booklet, follow-up materials, etc. All of these will be paid for by the CPE team with the exception of the follow-up materials. Check with the CPE Coordinator to determine who is responsible for getting these different materials. F. UNDERSTAND ALL FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS See section of this Manual under "Finances" for details. Church Partnership Evangelism

MINISTRY WEEK The ministry week can be summed up as "PRAYER & Participation." Each morning and each evening should be spent in a time of prayer. Prayer should be focal in each of the training times in the morning. And each visitation needs to be bathed in prayer even as conversation is taking place. DAY l--saturday The CPE team will probably arrive in your town/city on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. A. ARRIVAL Someone will need to meet them and accompany them to their lodging, get them oriented a little as to restaurants/eating places nearby, where the church is, etc. If the team arrives Friday afternoon, it may be good for the pastor and any key leaders in the church to meet with the CPE team just for introductions. Other than that, the team will probably want to have a meeting by themselves for prayer, etc, and to get to bed early. B. CHURCH ORIENTATION Different churches deal with the evening in different ways. Some churches will arrange for all the church members to gather on Saturday night for a ''welcoming meeting," and to brief the members (and CPE team) on how the ministry will go. This is helpful in that the CPE members are able to meet some of the church members before the actual ministry starts. This meeting may involve a meal (keep in mind, though, that you will have another meal at the church the next day right after the worship service). Other churches prefer to limit this meeting to the church leaders only so that they can get to know the CPE team. In either case, the meeting should not last long in order to allow everyone to get a good night's rest. C. LEADER'S MEETING Each day of the ministry, if at all possible, there should be a Leaders Meeting. This should be attended by the CPE team leader, the host pastor, possibly one or two others from the church that are heavily involved in the ministry (like the Ministry Secretary), any national pastor/worker who may be observing/participating in the ministry who will be a CPE Trainer in the future (this will be arranged in advance by the CPE Coordinator), and the CPE Coordinator/Trainer. This meeting will be presided over by the CPE Coordinator. Keep in mind, that the CPE Coordinator and the host pastor may be the same person. The purpose of this meeting is: To review the previous day's activities, and prepare for the coming day. To receive feedback from the different leaders on what is going well and what is not. To remind leaders of the proper use of the evangelism tract and follow-up material. To deal with any problems and questions the leaders may have. To pray together. Church Partnership Evangelism

This meeting either needs to take place in the morning before the ministry begins, possibly over breakfast, or in the evening after the appointments are over, and it should not be any longer than 40 minutes. DAY 2--SUNDA Y This is the day the ministry actually gets underway. Many months of prayer and preparation have gone into the ministry already. It is important that it gets off to a good start. Again, thorough training breeds confidence. A. WORSHIP SERVICE Most likely a CPE team member will be preaching in the morning service. His message should be focused on the importance of evangelism and discipleship, and should be motivational in nature. The CPE team may have involvement in the service in other ways also, like a group song, special music, testimony, etc. It is important to stress to the congregation that this week may be the most important/strategic week in the church's history as you will see many people make decisions for Christ. An announcement should be made during the service about the training. Everybody who will be taking part in the CPE ministry, even if not on the first day, needs to be at the initial training that afternoon. This training will last about two hours. B. MEAL It is recommended that the church have a meal together along with the CPE team immediately following the service. It is up to the church as to whether it is a "potluck" meal (everybody brings a dish) or if it is catered or if the church takes care of the preparations and cost. This recommendation is done for two reasons: 1) It keeps everybody at the church after the service. If you give people the opportunity to go home, have lunch, then return, many of them won't return. 2) It allows the training to get started earlier in the afternoon, thus giving more time to do appointments after the training. Yes, appointments start immediately after the training on Sunday afternoon, and then continue into the evening after a break for dinner. Lunch should not be dragged out. As quickly after the worship service is over, the food should be brought out. There shouldn't be any games, greetings, speeches, etc. As soon as people are done eating, the room should be prepared for the training session, and the training should begin within 15 minutes of the end of lunch, ideally no later than 1:00 p.m. C. TRAINING This training should not last more than two hours.the training session will be conducted by the CPE Coordinator/Trainer. If at all possible, a chalkboard or overhead projector needs to be available for the trainer to use. Each person who attends needs to have: Church Partnership Evangelism

Pencil/ball point pen Testimony/tract (in English & local dialect. The CPE members will need to hand these out as they are the only ones who have it, but make sure they collect it at the end of the training session) The Proper Use of the Tract training material (in English & local dialect) Sample of follow-up materials **Printed notes to be filled out during training session (see for discipleship material) A sample training session is found in Appendix E. covered: CPE's Objectives A Typical Visit Tools for Success Training in Tract Use Training in Follow-Up Material Questions Motivational Challenge from Scripture Arrange for Teams and appointments The majority of your time should be spent on training in the tract use. It is important to emphasize that it is the church member who will be sharing the tract, NOT the CPE member. The CPE member is there to share his testimony, then the church member takes over. The principle here is to teach a little, then go out and use it a lot, and to DO it immediately after the training. This is called "Just- In-Time" training. The "lecture" portion of the tract use training should be limited to minutes. The first portion of the training should be spent on how to use the follow-up materials. This will be the only time during the week that you have everybody together, so make the most of it. In most cases, during the ministry week, you will only get to the first follow-up lesson, maybe the second. So give special attention to how to conduct the first follow-up visit. D. ARRANGING THE TEAMS This may seem like a small thing yet it is very, very important! It is crucial that you are organized and ready to send out teams immediately. If the training ends at 3:00 p.m., then the teams should be out the door by 3:15 p.m. This is where the Ministry Secretary's job becomes very important. Since a CPE member should to be on each team, you will be limited as to how many teams can go out at one time. If the CPE team is comprised of six members, then the maximum number of teams that can go out at one time is six teams. These teams should be in two's or three's. From the Contacts Worksheet and the Weekly Planning Calendar, the Ministry Secretary should know which of the church members have appointments for each time slot. Then it is a matter of teaming up one or two church members with a CPE member. It is best if men go with men, and women go with women. If that is not possible, then that team needs to have three people on it rather than just two. It is best for the Ministry Secretary to notify/remind the other church members of when their Church Partnership Evangelism

appointments are (i.e., Monday morning, Tuesday evening, etc) BEFORE they leave the church. Once the teams are set up for that afternoon, send them out with the Lord's blessing. E. DINNER Dinner should be approximately 5:00-7:00 p.m. The church members will need to know where to take the CPE member following their last appointment in the afternoon (to the church, to the hotel, etc). F. EVENING APPOINTMENTS From approximately 7:00-9:00 p.m., more appointments will take place. If in the big city, sometimes it is possible to go later than that; if in the province, probably not. This determination will be made by the pastor. In the evenings, the CPE members should be accompanied back to the hotel. A. SCHEDULE DAYS 3-6--MONDAY-THURSDAY The same schedule will be followed each day: 6:45-7:45 Breakfast/ Leadership Meeting 8: 30 Pick up team from hotel 9:00-10:00 Training at the church 10:00-12:00 Appointments 12:00-2:00 Lunch & Rest 2:00-5:00 Appointments 5:00-7:00 Dinner 7:00-9:00 Appointments This is the "ideal." In real life, it never comes out this nicely. There may be some appointments over a meal, or some that last late into the evening. The key is to be FLEXIBLE and to try to be in tune with God's Spirit and how He is leading. B. TRAINING MEETING There should be a training meeting at the beginning of each day. The word "should" is stressed here because it doesn't always work out that way. This normally would take place at the church, but may take place at the hotel if there is a room available for that purpose. This meeting should be attended by those who will be doing appointments during the day. In this meeting, the following things should take place: Sharing of "ministry stories" (praises) from the previous day (10-15 min.) Dealing with any problems/questions (10 min.) Church Partnership Evangelism

Further training or reminders in tract use and follow-up materials (10-15 min) Prayer (10 min.) C. MAKE SURE FORMS ARE BEING FILLED OUT PROPERLY D. EMPHASIZE FOLLOW-UP Check to verify what percentages of new believers are being followed up with lesson one. If the percentages are low, the probable cause is that the team has become so caught up in the excitement of making decisions that they have forgotten about the requirement to make disciples. This should then be addressed at the team's morning meeting, and at the training times on the field. In terms of doing the follow-up, stress the reality that many new believers will be completely unfamiliar with the use of the Bible, and will need to be shown and then helped to look up references. E. VERIFY THAT THE TRACT IS BEING USED PROPERLY Check to verify that the tract presentation is not being hurried and used as a questionnaire, but rather is being used in a warm and friendly way to build understanding. This requires that the presentation be done slowly to allow for meaningful interaction. An unusually large amount of decisions recorded by anyone team may indicate that they are not thoughtfully presenting the tract. An unusually low number may indicate a lack of prayer or application. Ensure that team members are particularly carefil1 on question eight not to manipulate or push anyone into a decision for Christ if they are not ready. Such a decision would not be genuine, and would do more harm than good. F. FINISH THE RACE It is a very demanding schedule! By mid-week the team will become very weary, physically and emotionally. It is on this day that they "hit the wall," as the adrenaline from all the early excitement wears off. Encouragement is needed to finish the race well. Remind them that in their weak condition they are now in perfect condition for walking in the strength of the Spirit. This provides an opportunity to be reminded that when we are weak, then we are strong. There is much to do in the last days in the area of discipleship in particular, and this is a work that must continue up to the end of the ministry week to establish an ongoing ministry of discipleship. These are the most important days of the ministry and as such must be carried out in the strength of the Lord. Church Partnership Evangelism

DAY 7--FRIDAY RECREATION The ministry, as far as appointments and follow-ups are concerned, is officially over on Thursday night. The pastor should arrange for some type of a relaxing activity for the CPE members to take part in: going to the beach, sight-seeing, shopping, etc. This should not be a "ministry day" for them. It should be a day-off DAY 8 SATURDAY In most cases, the CPE team will be leaving on Saturday. Arrangements will need to be made for transporting them to the airport or pier or bus station. At this point, the CPE ministry is officially over. POST-MINISTRY The post-ministry can be titled, "Prayer & Preservation," Prayer is still vitally needed with the on-going Bible Studies. Without the continued dependence on the Lord through prayer, the post-ministry results will end up in shambles. How do we "preserve" the results of the ministry? There are four areas that we need to look at: A. STATISTICAL INFORMATION It is vitally important that accurate records are kept of the ministry. Two sets of records need to be maintained. The first set is the list of all of the potential contacts that each church member filled out on their "Contacts Worksheet." This should have been compiled on a master list by the Ministry Secretary. You may find that during the ministry week, not everyone on the master list was able to be visited. Therefore, this becomes your "fishing pool" for future evangelism/visitations. The second set of records is the list of those who prayed to receive Christ during the ministry. This is initially taken from the tear-off portion on the back of the tract where vital information is provided on that person. As with the first set of records, a master list should be compiled of all those who prayed to receive Christ. Included in this list should be the name of the church member whose contact it is, and who is doing the follow-up. B. EVALUATION (Forms "F") There is an evaluation form for you as the pastor of the church to fill out and return to the CPE Coordinator/Trainer within two weeks of the conclusion of the ministry. This evaluation will help us to more effectively run future CPE ministries. You are encouraged to keep notes throughout the week of things that went well, things that didn't go well, problems, criticisms, questions, etc. This will aid your filling out the evaluation at the end. 25 C. FOLLOW-UP Unresponsive Bible Study I hate to break the news to you, but the actual ministry was the easy part. The hardest part is just beginning--the follow-up. Let's be honest with ourselves-- many people make a decision for Christ that may not be genuine. Only the Lord knows. They may pray the sinner's prayer because they think they are already a Christian. They may accept Christ simply to please you and maintain "smooth interpersonal relationships. " But once the follow-up begins, it doesn't take long to determine which ones are serious about their walk with Christ and which ones are not. You will need to coach your church members in how to determine if an individual or a family is truly interested in the Gospel and whether to continue a Bible Study that has already started. In some cases, the person will stop showing up for the Bible Study, but always with a myriad of excuses. If the Bible Study is in his home, and he doesn't show up for a couple of weeks in a row, that is a pretty good signal that there is a lack of interest. Another "sign" may be a lack of good interaction/discussion each week in the lesson. What do you do with these people? 1. You don't get discouraged! Recognize that you have sown the seed and that sometime in the future, another will reap the harvest. Be reminded that evangelism has still taken place, but that this person may not have been ready yet for a genuine commitment to Christ. 2. Find a non-offensive way to stop the Bible Study. You don't want to waste your time on someone who is not responsive. Sometimes cutting the Bible Study back to every other week or once a month and then eventually discontinuing it altogether works. Or, in some cases, you can ask him to join another more responsive Bible Study that is meeting in their general area. That way it puts the responsibility on him. NOTE: Do this only with those Bible Studies that you are convinced are not going anywhere. 3. Don't give up on these people completely! The church member still has a relationship with that person. He should maintain that relationship and foster it. It may be that sometime in the future, the person will be open to the things of the Lord. Oftentimes, people are more open to the things of the Lord when they are in a) tension (a crisis in their life like loss of a job or a death in the family or a medical need), and b) transition (recently moved into the city or job transfer or just married or new parents). Responsive Bible Studies What about the responsive Bible Studies? The key word here is PERSEVERANCE. The key is not to give up. Oftentimes we start something with real enthusiasm and lots of energy but it slowly dies out until there is nothing left. Or we don't finish the project. To see true fruit from the Bible Studies requires "...always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain" (I Corinthians 15:58). Refer to Appendix F for more information on follow up of new believers. Church Partnership Evangelism

FINANCES The CPE team does not want to be a burden on the local church that they are ministering alongside. Therefore, the goal is to bring out enough money to cover their expenses, plus adequate funds to cover some of the expenses that the church will incur. The following are areas that the CPE team will cover completely: 1. All of their meals, including any meals in homes. 2. Cost of purchasing New Testaments. 3. All printing and xeroxing costs (tracts, training material,) 4. All transportation during the ministry, including for the church members. 5. All of their recreation, laundry, and emergency needs. The following are areas that the CPE team will not cover: 1. Sunday meal before the training session. 2. The follow-up materials. Even though the CPE team will cover most of these expenses, there are limits on how much they can spend on each. Here is a breakdown of the actual money available for these different expenses. You will need to plan accordingly. In actuality you will need to adjust these figures according to what the current exchange rate is, and how many members are on the CPE team. Item Cost per CPE team member New Testaments $25 Sunday Meal and Meals during the week $50 Transportation?? Contact CPE Coordinator NOTES: Recreation. If the recreation or "fun day out" is going to be somewhat expensive, it is best if you check with the CPE team leader or the CPE Coordinator in advance to make sure it is okay and that they have the budget for it. Again, the CPE team desires to be an asset to your local ministry and not a hindrance. We hope these financial arrangements help towards that end. If you have any questions regarding the finances, it is best to communicate with the CPE Coordinator. Church Partnership Evangelism

Hello, my name is Jim Wyatt. I live in the city of Dallas, Texas, in the USA. APPENDIX A Sample Testimony written By Jim Wyatt Use this as a guide for writing your testimony. Feel welcome to use some of the same phrases! Before following Christ, I tried to become happy by making money, going to parties, and living my way. But these things only made me empty. I knew I was sinning against God. I realized I needed for God to save me from my sins. (How I became a Christian) Then some friends showed me that the Bible says that we all have sin that separates us from God, and that we all deserve eternal punishment for our sins. The Bible says that no person can take away his sins by doing good things or going to church. But God loved us so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus was buried, and after 3 days He arose from the dead. The Bible says that any person who believes these truths and puts all his faith only in Jesus Christ alone will be forgiven forever through Jesus' blood and has eternal life with God. So that day, I put my faith in Jesus alone. I asked Jesus to forgive all my sins and to be my Lord. Today my life as a Christian is full of joy, peace, and purpose. I know God loves me and has forgiven me. Best of all, I know that I will be with God forever when I die. I know that God loves me and has (Invitation to hear the gospel) I would like to share with you how you too can be forgiven of your sins and have eternal life with God? Key Points to Remember when Writing Your Testimony 'Before following Christ': Be general about your life before Christ. The hearer should know that you were a sinner, but not walk away focused on your detailed sins. Describing feelings is okay (e.g., pain, loneliness, emptiness, uncertainty of eternity, fear of judgment, etc.), but avoid specific sin details. If you say, "I was a wife-beater" or a constant drug user" or "adulterer", then the hearer may think, "I'm not that bad - I haven't done such things! I don't need Christ the way he does." General descriptions of sin impact a broader range of people. For example, if you say the general phrase, "I was rebellious and sinned all the time," then the fornicator listening to you may identify by thinking, "I bet he was a fornicator, like me." Don't spend 5 minutes on your sin versus only 30 seconds on salvation and new life! (How I became a Christian): Make sure this section gives the gospel! Your testimony may be the only chance for someone to hear it! The gospel is: we are sinners who are saved only when we put our faith in Christ, who died, was buried, and arose for our sins. Scripture does not say that we were saved by 'walking the aisle', or asking Him into our hearts', or other Christian-ese. Be clear; avoid churchy terms. 'Today my life as a Christian is': This section should show benefits, not problems! Tell of the joy, peace, and forgiveness Jesus gave you - instead of since trusting Christ I have had nothing but problems". If you really must mention the problems, a better approach would be, "After I trusted Christ, He has always given me strength and peace, even when I have problems." But don t dwell on the problems! 'Invitation': This is misleading; it was meant to be an invitation to hear how they too can have eternal life. It is not meant to ask them to make the decision right then. The invitation to trust Christ should come after you have explained the gospel tract to them. See the sample testimony. Church Partnership Evangelism

PERSONAL TESTIMONY INSTRUCTIONS & TIPS SUMMMARY Divide your own story (testimony) into three sections: Before Christ, Conversion, and After Christ. As, you thoughtfully prepare your story, there are two questions to answer related to each section: Before Christ I. Where were you spiritually before receiving Christ, and how did that affect you--your feelings, attitudes, actions, and relationships? 2. What caused you to begin considering God/Christ as a solution to your needs? Conversion 1. What realization did you come to that finally motivated you to receive Christ? 2. Specifically, how did you receive Christ? After Christ 1. How did your life begin to change after you trusted Christ? 2. What other benefits have you experienced since becoming a Christian? BEFORE CHRIST DETAILS The objective of this portion of your story is to arouse interest in your non-christian listeners by causing them to identify with you. Apart from Christ, we all have the same basic emptiness and lack of fulfillment. As we recall our own lives apart from Christ, non- Christians will be able to identify with our feelings and thoughts because they also are seeking answers to the same questions. An effective way to share these areas of need is to aim for an "open nerve" that is common to most of us. Just as an ex-posed nerve in a bad tooth will cause us to react when it is touched, so all of us have certain basic emotional or psychological "open nerves" that are sensitive to touch. Below are some common "open nerves." NO PEACE NO PURPOSE NO HAPPINESS NO MEANING IN LIFE FEAR OF DEATH GRIPPED WITH SINFUL HABITS GUILTY CONSCIENCE NO FULFILLMENT LACK OF FELLOWSHIP VICES LONELINESS BOREDOM EMPTINESS DISSATSIFACTION WITH LIFE DEPRESSION FEAR OF GOD'S JUDGMENT WORRY LACK OF LOVE NO ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE NO SENSE OF BELONGING FOCUS ON GAINING RICHES ANGER Include also the good aspects of your life, like good and loving parents, your desire for education, for excellence, your being friendly or hard working, etc. But build your testimony around your "open nerves." As, you learn to do this, you will identify with your audience and they will identify with you. As people hear you honestly admit your problems, you will be real and approachable to them and will encourage them to share their "open nerves" with you. CAUTION: Be somewhat general about your life before Christ. The hearer should know that you were a sinner, but not walk away focused on your detailed sins. Describing feelings is okay (e.g., pain. loneliness, emptiness, uncertainty of eternity, fear of judgment, etc), but avoid specific sin details. Instead of saying, "I was a wife-beater," it is enough to Church Partnership Evangelism

say "I was not a good husband and did many things to hurt my wife." Instead of giving lots of details about being a drug-user, it is okay just to say "I was influenced by wrong people while in high school and the outcome was that I became a drug-user." Instead of saying "I was an adulterer," it is enough to say "I lived an immoral life and did many things that displeased God." General descriptions of sin impact a broader range of people. Don't spend five minutes on your sin versus only 30 seconds on salvation and new life! HOW TO DISCOVER "OPEN NERVES" Think for a moment about the problems you faced before you came to Christ. When Christ entered your life, He met that particular need, and the problem doesn't plague you anymore. Or, think about problems you are still having in your struggle with sin, but which are being increasingly conquered through your walk with Christ. WHAT IF I ACCEPTED CHRIST AT A YOUNG AGE? There may still be an "open nerve" that you can use. For instance, you may have had a fear of death or hell, or an uncertainty of going to heaven, or a lack of love in your family. Use it if it fits your situation. But you could also focus on an "open nerve" that you struggled with after you accepted Christ. Maybe while in high school, you got in with the wrong set of friends, or you became rebellious, or you felt lonely, or you struggled with anger in your life. You can share this as your "open nen'e" and how God is helping you to overcome it. It helps the non-christian to realize that we still experience problems even after we accept Christ into our lives. CONVERSION This is the pivotal point of your story and tells specifically how you came to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Gospel should be brought out clearly enough in your narration that the hearer would know how to receive Christ himself. Your testimony may be the only chance someone has to hear the Gospel message, so make it clear and concise. Communicating the Gospel clearly and briefly should include: The fact of sin--all have sinned The penalty of sin-eternal separation from God Christ paid the penalty-he died for our sins The requirement to receive Christ It is effective to use one or two Scripture verses that were influential in your conversion, or that clearly give the Gospel. Memorize the verses you use. Avoid religious words or phrases. Be factual: **Date and place of conversion (if known) **Influential people in conversion **What convinced you to receive Christ **How did you receive Christ? **What verses stood out to you at that time AFTER CHRIST This section of your story should tell something of what has changed in your life since coming to know Christ: the blessing of sins forgiven, assurance of salvation, new meaning and purpose in life, or how your "open nen'e" was healed or being healed since Christ came into your life. This section should emphasize the benefits you have received since trusting Christ. Be positive, not negative! Church Partnership Evangelism

CHALLENGE /INVITATION This is NOT an invitation to accept Christ, but an invitation to hear how they too can have eternal life. Immediately following your testimony, there will be a Gospel presentation given. One sentence is enough to stir in the non-christian's heart a desire to continue listening. Some examples: "I encourage you to listen to how you too can have the assurance of eternal life. " "You can also experience the same peace that I have." "I would like to share with you what it means to have a personal relationship with Christ." "Christ is the answer to all of our problems. Here is how you can avail of His help also." "It is wonderful to be free of my vices today, and it all happened because of my decision to ask Jesus Christ into my life." STORY TIPS THEME: The central issue in our lives, the "open nerve," that shows the contrast in our spiritual outlookbefore and after knowing Christ. CONVERSION: Keep it simple, clear, and repeatable. CONCLUSION: End with a challenge or invitation. SCRIPTURE: Think of whether there was one key verse that really opened your eyes. If not, do not force it. LANGUAGE: Avoid religious cliches and "God-talk." LENGTH: Be brief and to the point. Do a couple of rough drafts and try to improve on it, cutting out unnecessary words or phrases. You should be able to tell your story in 3 minutes or less. CONVERSATIONAL: Do not memorize your testimony, but know it so well that you can share it in a conversational way so that it doesn't sound "rehearsed." Church Partnership Evangelism

APPENDIX C NOTES DEFINING A PROPER USE OF THE TRACT Good News and God s Plan for Your Salvation 2004 Church Partnership Evangelism Publications. DIALOGUE EVANGELISM: When using the tract remember that our goal is to establish a dialogue with those we are visiting. We believe that God is already at work in their lives and we want to find out what he is showing them. Almost all the questions you ask from the tract have a follow up question that you will want to ask even though it is not written in the tract. The unwritten question is the most important. We ask it in order to listen to them share in their words what God is teaching them. We ask these questions so that they, by their own mouths, may speak truth to themselves and us and we by listening may know how to speak truth into their lives. Our aim is a respectful and meaningful dialogue where the Spirit of God is helping us listen to them and speak truth to them. There is no place you will go where God has not gone before us and is not there. And there is no person you can talk to that has not already heard the voice of the Spirit convicting them of sin and righteousness and judgment. If we will listen to them we can learn to cooperate with the Spirit in this work. And when we help people talk about what God is teaching them and then we put next to their words the words of Jesus Christ and His gospel our conversation echoes with the power of the Holy Spirit! This is the best way of doing evangelism. GETTING STARTED: When going out to appointments or visiting in the homes of individuals it is good to note that teams of two are almost always more effective than teams of 3 or more. Smaller teams are less threatening and more likely be received into the home. The one drawback is that when you take three or more you are providing a context for training more persons in personal dialogue evangelism. Ultimately the Pastor must decide the size of the teams. If you use a larger team they will work more effectively in lower class communities. In the middle class teams should almost always be limited to two or three. All team members should be thoroughly familiar with the use of the tract. It is a plus if these participants may also have a working knowledge of other evangelistic tools i.e. Evangelism Explosion. Outreach by Appointment: CPE prioritizes visiting those with whom an appointment has been made. These will be unsaved family members, friends, neighbors and work associates of members of the host church. In advance of the CPE teams arrival and the outreach ministry the host church must begin working with their people in small groups or as a whole congregation to identify those unsaved people with whom they have reconciling relationships. It shouldn t be difficult for people to come up with at least eight names. Then these individuals should be strategically targeted for prayer. In the days leading up to the outreach event they should be contacted by their friends for an appointment. Simply explain to them that you have a friend coming from outside the country who wishes to meet your friends and to share with them how God turned his or her life around. (Or words to that effect.) Then directly asked them if at a time you suggest you could bring them by and introduce them. You will be surprised at how open your friends will be to this and this will be in part because of the prayers you have prayed for them and the relationship you have built with them. Church Partnership Evangelism

Once you go to meet your friend with the North American it is important that you take a few moments for greetings and to share casual conversation. Then you can transfer the conversation into a presentation of the gospel. The following material will apply to this setting. Outreach Door to Door - At the door: (The following material is written from the perspective of a door to door outreach but the material applies equally with outreach through appointments.) I. How to introduce the tract: Don't! Instead introduce the person, the North American. Simply say "Hello my name is and this is my friend who has come all the way from in order to share with the people of our community about something wonderful that has happened in his life. He can't speak but he has had his testimony translated and he wants me to share it with you." At this point you hand them the tract. Notice you have not asked them any questions that they can respond negatively too, but have assumed that they will let you present this testimony to them. NOTE! THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT SAY. Don't ask questions. "Can I read this tract to you!" "Can we have a few minutes of your time!" Don't introduce your denomination. When you do that you are building walls not tearing them down. Don't say we want to talk about the Bible with you. Don't use religious words. Don't debate religions such as Catholicism or the prominent religion of the country you live in. If in a Catholic community you can disarm the catholic. If they say, "I am not interested for I am catholic." Then say truthfully, "Good! You are just the kind of person we want to talk too. You believe the Bible is God's Word, you believe Jesus is God's Son and just like us you love Jesus. We just want to share with you what he has done in our lives." (No negatives, only positives.) If they ask you what religion you represent tell them you don't represent religion. Our message is not one of religion but of relationship. You may wish to tell them that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. If the individual will not let you speak with them thank them very politely and go on your way. Don't push them to listen. If the individual is already a Christian search them for their reason of assurance. Finally ask to pray with them for the success of our ministry and after praying move on. Don't take the luxury of lingering to visit with them unless they have a pressing need God has sent you there to address. 2. Now you are reading the testimony. They should have a tract in hand and you will read the testimony out loud with them following along. Be familiar with the content of the testimony and read it prayerfully and thoughtfully. When you are nervous or after you have done it a number of times your temptation is to go fast but read it slowly and thoughtfully. 3. After reading the testimony move immediately to the next page. Don't ask to read it but assume this privilege. Don't introduce it as a questionnaire. THIS IS NOT A QUESTIONNAIRE! Church Partnership Evangelism

Say to them, "These 10 questions will help you understand how God did this in my friend's life and/or these 10 questions will help you understand how God can do the same in your life." Turn their tract over to the inside page and hand it to them. If you feel it is appropriate, you may choose at this time to give them a pencil they can use to mark yes or no as they respond to the questions. NOW PRAYERFULLY PROCEED. (Note: It is important that you let them read the Bible verses out of the Bible instead of off the tract. Do this as often as possible even if it is written on the tract. Especially keep this in mind when reading Rom. 6:23, and Rev. 3:20. You may even ask if they have a Bible if they do use theirs in presenting the verses.) Once again, as you go through these questions, remember that under most questions is a dialogue question that will help you get them to talk and you to listen to how God is working in their lives. THE PLAN OF GOD FOR YOUR SALVATION 1. Do you believe in God? (Deut. 10:17-18) Most people will say, yes. The dialogue question now is, What is your understanding of God. How would you describe him to me or a person who didn t know Him? Give them time to answer. Usually they will speak of him as the creator or maker of all things. Whatever their answer, there will be almost always something they share that you can take note of and say that you agree with them. Now take time to add to their thought some of your own thoughts. Share with them that God is all powerful, that he is holy, that he is loving and that he is a person and can be known as any person can be known. At this time I like to point out that God s greatest desire is that we would know him personally. I share with them that Genesis chapter one says we are all made in God s image. The reason for this is that God wants us to know him. While they cannot know their dog or an animal because they are not made in the image of a dog or any other animal, they can know God, the all powerful, holy, Creator God because they are made in His image. In fact this is why they exist. This is our purpose for being. We exist to know God and please him. A further reference verse is Psalm 100:3 "Know ye that the Lord, he is God; it is he who hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." People need to know that we are referring them to the God who made all things. 2. Do you believe that God loves you? (John 3:16) Again almost everyone will answer, yes. The next dialogue question is, What have you experienced in your life that made or makes you feel as though God loved you? Besides what you have been told, when is the first time you knew by what you had experienced that God loved you? You will be surprised at some of the wonderful and touching stories that people will share with you. A good thing to say when they answer yes and after sharing with you their story is, "That is right! He does love us and as we go on I hope you will come to understand just how much He loves you." 3. Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God? (Matt. 16:15-16, John 1:1-2) Depending on what country we work in this question may be changed to, What is your understanding of who Jesus Christ is? In any place this should be the dialogue question. Church Partnership Evangelism

It is at this point that we may wish to emphasize the miracles of Jesus, his declaration to be the Son of God, and his death, burial and resurrection as proof of his claims. In some countries it will be important to emphasize that we do not believe in many God s but only one God who is expressed in three persons. Jesus' claim to be the Son of God (that is to be God the Son) was proven beyond doubt by his bodily resurrection from the dead. Thomas realized the implications of the fact of Christ's resurrection when after he saw, heard and touched Christ he bowed and said, "My Lord and my God." (John 20:28) 4. Do you believe that you are a sinner? (Rom. 3:10, 3:23) The dialogue question here is quite personal. Admit this to them before asking them. Ask them, How do you know that you are a sinner? They will most likely say, I sin like everyone else. Help them to get specific. Ask them, What do you do that makes you know you re a sinner? When you go to bed at night what do you feel guilty about? If they hesitate be transparent with them and share with them some of your struggles or how you came to know you were a sinner. Be specific with them without being detailed. Then after being open with them say, How about you? Where do you struggle with sin? If they will open up with you it is a sure sign that the Spirit is at work in your dialogue and opening up their hearts to His voice. Many people will say yes to this question but they have a hard time accepting it as true. They reason that they have not committed murder or adultery so they are not big sinners. One man told me he had no sins, "Only vices." It is important to point out to them that one little sin makes you a complete sinner and that also from the view of God, who is absolutely pure and holy, there is very little difference between the greatest and the least sin. Isaiah 64:6 says, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as a filthy rag." This does not mean that God does not approve of us doing good to one another. What it means is that we cannot count on our goodness to bring us into a right relationship with God. The best we can do is tainted with sin and therefore deformed. Example: A little bit of leaven deforms a whole lump of bread. So a little sin deforms and makes unholy all our good deeds. At this point I almost always like to have them read Romans 3: I explain to them that what we see that is sin in our lives is just a small part of the sin God sees in us. This passage shows us what God sees in every heart at its depth that has not been cleansed by Him. Although it doesn t sound like us it is what God knows to be true of us deep inside. Our only hope is to find a way to have Him make us clean from the inside out. 5. Do you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins? (Rom. 5:8, Jn. 1:29) In some countries it is better to ask, Do you understand why the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ died for man s sins? It is very possible to quickly go through the first 4 questions without offering any explanations but you should always take time to discuss this question. If they say yes, ask them, What do they think it means that Jesus died for our sins? If they so no, ask them, Why do they think he died? It is important at this point to give them room to offer some input by asking these questions. This will help to hold their interest. Whatever their answer now you must explain what this statement means. I like to explain to them that Christ's suffering was far more than just physical but that spiritually he bore the greater suffering. For on the cross he took every single sin that has ever been committed by the individual I'm talking to and by myself and throughout all of history. He did not just take on himself this tremendous weight of sin but he suffered there all the punishment that each sin deserves. All the torment of Hell each sin requires was suffered by the eternal Son Jesus Christ on the cross. If we were to pay for this Church Partnership Evangelism

sin ourselves it would take us forever suffering in Hell. Jesus paid for the sin on the cross and when he had pared it in full he rose again from the grave. That is how much Jesus loves us. He would have suffered for all the worlds sins if you were the only one who would accept the payment he made. On the positive side not only did he take our sin but also for those who receive him he offers to transfer to our account all of his goodness. II Cor. 5:21 is a good closing verse to show them to demonstrate this understanding. Evangelism Explosion also offers a good illustration. Put a book in one hand and explain that this book represents all the recorded sins in our life, sins of thought and of deed, sins of doing what we should not have done and not doing what we should have done. They are all written in a book of judgment and if any of us are judged according to that book there is enough evidence there to condemn us. (Place book in palm of your hand) this sin is resting on us and it keeps us out of heaven and it blocks our relationship with a holy God. What can be done with it? This is why Jesus died. (Raise your other hand and point out that it represents Jesus Christ) All those sins where paid for by him so that we would not of necessity have to pay for them ourselves. (Transfer book over into the hand representing Jesus.) Ask them if this is what they understand. 6. Do you know what to do with your sins? It is important to pause after this question and let them attempt to give an answer. If they mark yes ask them what, if no give them an opportunity to say why they marked no. Regardless of what their answer is do not respond with a correction or a negative. Accept their answer with a simple, "OK" and move on. This question is designed to drive home a sense of need. Evangelism Explosion's question is even more thought provoking and you might like to use it here. "Suppose that you were to die tonight and stand before God and He were to say to you, "Why should I let you into My heaven!" What would you say?" Now you may read the rest of part 6. The answer will be yes because God has promised this to us and He cannot lie. 7. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death hut the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." STOP! Don't go any further until you explain to them what this death sentence for sin means. Tell them there are three kinds of death and they all involve separation. I. Physical death - When we die physically our bodies go in the earth and our spirits separate from our bodies and go either to heaven or to hell. The separation of our bodies and spirits is physical death. 2. Spiritual death - Because of our sin we our separated from a relationship with God. This is spiritual death, All of our religion and good works cannot remove from us the weight of sin that makes us separated from God (Spiritually dead). 3. Eternal death - If we physically die in a state of being spiritually dead we will remain separated from God forever. This is called Eternal death or Hell. God's remedy for this death is to give us the free gift of Eternal life through his Son Jesus. God's standard of judgment is: sin = eternal death. Church Partnership Evangelism

There are two ways to pay for your sin. You can accept the free gift of eternal life and the payment Jesus made for your sin on the Cross or you can pay for your sins yourself by suffering forever separated from God. Now go on and ask the question: Would you like Jesus to save you from your sins? If they say no, don't push. But you will be surprised many will say yes. Don't get to excited many people want Christ to save them from their sins but when the terms are given they don't want to do it his way. Keep going on prayerfully. Question number 8 is very important. Go slowly. 8. This is what you must do...in Rev. 3:20 Jesus says, " Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him." At this point in the dialogue you should not be referring to the tract. Go to Rev. 3:20 and have them read it aloud. After they read it STOP! Ask them what door they think that Jesus is knocking on. They should answer, "the door of my life, my heart, my soul etc." Your answer should be. "That's right! Many times people hear the knocking when they feel guilty or are going through struggles or thinking about the meaning of life etc. But they mistakenly think Jesus is knocking on the door of their house. They think he wants them to become religious. They say more prayers. They may go to church or put a picture of Jesus up on the wall. They try to get near to God. They get religious. Yet all the time Jesus is knocking on the door of your heart. He is not asking you to be more religious. He wants to have a relationship with you. He wants to come in your life and take away your sin and bring you back into a relationship with God. Make you spiritually alive!" NOW ask the question. Say their name. Would you like to open the door of your heart to Christ today! If they say the door has been open already explain to them that Jesus is a gentleman and He won't go in through an open door unless you invite him in. If they say no; Don't push it. You may ask why. If they say yes; Read the prayer of acceptance slowly and prayerfully. Ask them to listen and decide if the prayer expresses the true sentiment of their hearts. Explain to them it is very important that they only do this if they mean it with all their heart. After reading the prayer ask them if this is what they would like to say to Jesus today. If they say yes have them repeat after you the prayer, phrase for phrase. DO NOT READ THE PRAYER TO QUICKLY BUT PRAYERFULLY. You might want to explain to them that they only need to do this one time if they are sincere. It is a onetime prayer for all time. IMPORTANT: Although you may be eager to lead them in prayer and they may be eager as well this is the time to stop and explain to them the seriousness of their decision. There are four common reasons why people may pray to receive Christ and all of them are the wrong reasons and lack the sincerity God is looking for. Many people are either sentimental, sacramental, superstitious, or polite, or they may be all four. Yet this prayer is not just a sentimental statement that makes you feel good. It is also not a sacrament one must do along with other acts of religious commitment in order to be saved. It is the only thing one must do to be saved. Again this is not something you do out of a superstitious fear. Last of all should you Church Partnership Evangelism

do it to conform to someone else s expectations. This decision is one in which a person is desperate to have Jesus. They are making a lifetime, eternal commitment to give their hearts and lives to God. They are turning from everything that has gone before and looking only to Christ to save them. I like to explain to people that this is a free gift but that God can only give it to empty hands. A person must be willing to let go of every known sin in their lives. They must also release their confidence in their own goodness to satisfy God. They must even be willing to give to God all they hold dear. They must want this gift of Jesus over everything else. You must ask them if they are willing to make that kind of commitment to God. A onetime for all time decision to let God live and rule in their hearts is what you are seeking! This test will stop a number from praying to receive Christ who may initially have been willing to. They may tell you they need to consider so important a decision longer. Agree with them and make an appointment to follow them up for the specific purpose of pressing them for that decision once they have had time to think about it. Those who do pray to receive the Lord Jesus Christ: After they have prayed the prayer you may move on to the last two questions. However don't at any time become stuck with your nose in the tract. If they pray the first thing you should do is rejoice with them. Tell them that if they were sincere God has; 1. Come into their hearts (Rev. 3:20) 2. Forgiven them of their sins (I John 1:9) 3. Made them His child (John 1:12) 4. Given them eternal life (Rom. 6:23) Tell them that their feelings are not as important as God's promise and if they were sincere than God has kept His promise. Two passages I suggest that you share with a new convert are John 1:12 and I John 5: They offer a rich assurance. BEFORE LEAVING: After having given them the follow up lesson number one and a New Testament, set a time to revisit them before the campaign is over. Don't ask. "Can we come back and visit you!" They might want to say yes but this kind of question is too easy to say 'no' to. Instead explain to them: I. That your friend is going to be leaving in a few days and wishes to return to say good bye. 2. That at that time you will be available to try and answer any questions they might have after doing the lesson. 3. That if they finish the first lesson that you will give them a second lesson at that time. 4. Finally ask them when a good time to visit them would be the following day. For example, "When would be a good time to see you tomorrow morning?" They will help you find the time. Assume the privilege of the second visit. Be sure that you leave them with the tract, the lesson and a New Testament. Church Partnership Evangelism

APPENDIX D FOLLOW-UP AND DISCIPLESHIP OF NEW BELIEVERS 2004, Church Partnership Evangelism Publications Introduction: It is crucial that in our follow-up and discipleship that we are willing to invest ourselves in the lives of those who have made a profession of faith. Our evangelistic work is not complete unless we are willing to invest time, energy and discipline in our follow-up. Remember God calls us to make disciples not to collect decisions. (Matthew 28:19-20) Strategy: 1. Once a person has made a profession of faith in Christ, it is important to invest time with him/her in personal follow-up, confirming that the person has made a conscientious decision. There are many reasons why a person may have made a profession of faith in Christ: Because of a poor understanding of the message. Because of curiosity. Because they knew they might get some free literature. Because of politeness or pressure, etc. The discipler needs to make sure that he/she understands why the person made a profession of faith. 2. Make sure the first lesson in the Fundamental Truths follow-up series are given to the person who has made a profession of faith. Arrange with that person a follow-up visit for the next day if possible or the soonest day after that. Ask them not if, but when you may visit them on a specific day. At that time tell them that you will respond to any question they may have in respect to the first lesson. Encourage them to ask God to confirm truth to them as they study the discipleship lesson. Tell them that God can show them from the Bible what is true. 3. If you are meeting with more than one new believer at a time, you should intentionally think of this as a new believer cell group. This is a group that can grow as you reach out to others or as you invite into it at the right time a Christian brother or sister to support your ministry to these new Christians. Even if you are meeting with a new believer one on one, you should begin to move him fairly soon into the follow-up into a small group setting. Target that between the 4 th and 6 th lesson you will have them in a small group setting with other new believers. This kind of setting is a pathway into the full life of the Church. 4. When conducting a follow-up lesson: a) You should first begin by spending time visiting casually. b) To begin the lesson, lead in a simple prayer asking God to make His truth known to all present including yourself. c) See that everyone has a Bible. At the first lesson show the person how they may use the table of contents to find books and how they may then look up verses that are quoted in the lesson. d) Share the reading of the lesson with those you are discipling. You may read a portion but appoint parts for them to read as well. When you come to verses have them look them up Church Partnership Evangelism

on their own (give them time) and then let them read the verse out loud. e) Give them time to answer questions, give them as little help as possible. Let them think it through. Keep taking them back to the word for answers. f) Don t be afraid of them asking you questions you don t know the answers to. If you don t know the answer simply say so but promise to think about it and look in the Bible and to attempt an answer at your next meeting. Among other things this gives you a good reason to meet again. g) Don t be surprised if sometime in the study, major issues surface in that person s life. This is God s leading and is an open door for you to pray for them and minister to them. Always seek your answers for them from the Word of God. h) Remember that this is a work God calls every believer to and He will give you the wisdom and the words to carry it out as you trust and rest upon His enabling. 5. You might consider planning a reception meeting in the church at some point after the ministry event. Invite new believers to participate in the meeting and tell them that you want to welcome them in to the Christian family. Explain to them that there will be other people who just like them have recently made a profession of faith. This meeting should include the following: a) Welcome of new believers and information on the activities of the church. b) Introduce the pastor as well as those who are in charge of different church departments explaining their different responsibilities within the church. c) Praise ought to be an essential ingredient of this meeting. The songs should be printed on chorus sheets in order that the new Christians can participate. d) The disciplers presence at this meeting is essential. Make sure that those who have lead individuals to Christ sit with their new believer friend helping to make them feel welcome and a part of the family of God. e) The Church may want to conclude the evening by providing a coffee time for the new believers. The church should make provision for supplying the necessary elements for this fellowship time. f) Many times the new believers will want to bring their family and friends to this type of reception/fellowship time. By all means encourage it, as it provides further contacts for personal evangelism. 6. After the new believers has finished the series of lessons, hopefully he will be in a small group setting. At that time you may invite the group to participate in a Bible Study program at the Church or to pick up a new study in the group. 7. The initial stage of discipleship comes to a conclusion once the new believer makes the decision to be baptized. Normally this decision takes anywhere between 6 months to over a year. This is the time commitment that we are expecting of each discipler. Conclusion: The task for follow-up and discipleship is not easy! The experience can be frustrating and requires the blessing of the Holy Spirit to carry it out successfully. The disciplers should be Christians who are willing to invest a great deal of time in the lives of the new believers and who are willing to give them assistance the moment it is required. We must conscientiously and systematically carry out our responsibilities and leave the results to God. Church Partnership Evangelism

APPENDIX F Prayer Covenant If you want to bring people to Jesus you are going to have to pray them there. Prayer is the key to all lasting evangelism and discipleship. And not any kind of prayer, but deep intentional prayer in the Holy Spirit. We must commit ourselves to intercede for our lost friends, family members, neighbors and fellow workers. And God wants to guide us in these prayers. His Spirit is already groaning for them and he wants to set in your heart His attitude as you pray for them. So when you pray for the lost, first seek to enter into God s presence and seek his heart for those for whom you are praying. Here are some directions on praying for lost people. 1. Remember as you pray that no one has a greater passion for the lost than God. Now ask God to pour some of this passion into your heart, by His Holy Spirit, as you begin praying. 2. Remember that God s goodness leads people to repentance. Now ask God to begin His good work in their lives. Think of blessings you have received and ask God to shower His blessings on their lives as well. 3. Remember that the love of God draws men to Himself. Now ask God to show you specific ways in which you can show the love of Jesus to your friends. Be ready to do what He shows you. It may call for you to help them in a special way. It may call for you to ignore an offense they have caused you or to forgive them of a hurt they have inflicted upon you. What ever God shows you obey Him. He is answering your prayer. 4. With this attitude in mind go to your friend or family member and tell them that you believe God, the creator, has blessed your life in response to your prayers. Tell them that you have felt a desire to pray for them. Ask them if this would be all right and what are specific needs they might have that you can pray for. Then be sure to pray specifically for them every day. Here is the promise we want you to make. We want you to pledge to God that you will faithfully pray for specific friends, family members, neighbors and work mates every day until the time of our Church Partnership Evangelism ministry. Below is a pledge sheet for you to complete. Almighty God, I know that You desire for those I know and love to come to You in faith and find salvation through Jesus Christ your son. I know that you long to forgive them of their sins and put in them Your eternal life. I now pledge to seek Your desire for these individuals in my prayers and actions. I pledge for the next months to pray every day making specific and thoughtful request on behalf of (list the names below) Friends Family members Work mates Neighbors I pledge to seek your Holy Spirit to guide me in my prayers for them and I ask that you would use this time of intercession to prepare their hearts for the new life you wish to give them through your Son. In Jesus name, Amen. Sign your name Church Partnership Evangelism

Did you have adequate tracts, Notes on the Proper Use of the Tract, follow-up materials, etc? 3. Any recommendations here? CAMPAIGN ITSELF 1. How many local church members were actually involved in the campaign? What is the average attendance of this church on Sunday morning? 2. Of the members involved in the campaign, how many of them actually shared the Gospel tract? How many shared the Gospel for the very first time? 3. How many of them were able to do the first follow-up lesson? How many members do you anticipate continuing on with the follow-up lessons (as opposed to dropping it or turning it over to the pastor or someone else "more experienced")? Is there a need for more advance training in this area before the CPE campaign begins? 4. Did the members have contacts to visit immediately, or did it take them a day or two to get moving? Were the members prepared and ready to go out Sunday afternoon for their first visitations? FINANCES 1. Did the finances hold out okay? 2. Were there expenditures made that were not included in the financial package? Please itemize! 3. Were you comfortable handling some of the CPE team's money, or would you have preferred not doing that? 4. Any suggestions on how to improve this area? OTHER 1. Is there anything else that would help to make the next campaign more effective?
