2 Lay Director s Message by Dave Luddy During this season of Lent, we are all trying so hard to deepen our relationship with our Lord and Savior. At the same time, as the warm weather arrives and the flowers start blooming, it seems to me that Jesus is making his presence among us visible in so many wonderful ways. And, as new life grows in His creation, He shows us that we too can have new life in Him. I also see signs of new life within the Cursillo movement. Several of the Cursillistas who lived their weekends last summer have become active in friendship groups and Ultreyas, are serving as new leaders on the Secretariat, or are serving as team members for the upcoming weekends. Please continue to support them in their fourth day and in their service to our community. Mark Carter and Vicky Mundt are busy forming teams for the upcoming weekends and are preparing for the start of team formation sessions. Our new 3 day weekend committee is providing lots of planning and support. The School of Leaders is hosting special sessions to support the teams. We would love to have your support in all of these areas. But, most of all we need your support as sponsors. Paul Gonzalez has been reaching out to you to pray for potential candidates and to be brave enough to invite those who might benefit. Within the next month, we will make a Go/No Go decision for the weekends based on the number of candidates. So, please do your best and keep Paul informed of any candidates that you are working with. Thanks to Sue Wenzlick s efforts in leading the awesome purse and bag bingo on Jan 28th, we received a very generous check for the Cursillo Movement of Baltimore. This will help us to defray weekend expenses and to keep the cost down for our candidates. It will also allow us to provide full or partial scholarships for candidates who cannot pay the full cost of a Cursillo weekend. So, please don t let cost get in the way of any potential candidate. Just let Paul know the situation and he will take care of it. Our spring and fall Palanca masses and get togethers are a wonderful way for us to come together as a community to pray and to enjoy food, fellowship, and information about our movement. Our most recent one on March 18 th was well attended and we learned a lot about our Palanca efforts. Please see the article in this newsletter for details. Do you live in an area that makes it difficult to come to an Ultreya? One of our goals is to host rotating Ultreyas in different parts of the Archdiocese. We ve had them in Laurel and Annapolis and would love to expand to other locations. If you d like to host one in your area, please contact Andy Roe, our 4 th day coordinator, and he will help to make the arrangements. Blessings to you and your family as we approach the Easter Triduum. I pray that you will experience God s love and mercy in a special way and will find opportunities to share it with those that you encounter in your daily life. De Colores, Dave Luddy deluddy@gmail.com
3 As we meditate on the Paschal Mystery, we can make analogy to Jesus' three days in the tomb with the three days of the Cursillo weekend. We enter the tomb on Friday in our sin and selfishness and come out on Sunday full of new life. One might ask: If Jesus was buried on Friday, how did he rise on Sunday? He was in the tomb for three days? Firstly, if the question is by what power did Jesus rise after He was dead; the answer is by the power of God. Because Jesus offered Himself as the totally perfect and innocent sacrifice offered to God for the remission of sins, the Father accepted that sacrifice as making atonement (i.e. literally--- AT-ONE-ment) for the human race. The resurrection was the proof that God had accepted the sacrifice of Jesus and, thus, renewed fallen creation that had been disfigured since the original sin of Adam and Eve. Secondly, if the question has to do with counting the number of days, we need to realize that Jewish law reckons the day to begin at sunset. We read in the Gospel of Luke 23:54 It was the day of preparation, and the Sabbath was about to begin. Therefore, Jesus was laid in the tomb before sunset on Friday; that was the first day. Jesus was in the tomb all day Saturday, which was the Sabbath, (Luke 23:55) the second day. The Gospel of Luke continues (24:1), But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. Jesus rose from the dead early Sunday morning, the third day. So while Jesus was not in the tomb for a complete 72 hours (three complete 24 hour periods), He was in the tomb before the end of Friday (one day), all of Saturday (second day), at day break on Sunday (third day). Therefore, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. 4 Have you ever taken the time to put yourself into a scene in a Scripture reading? What would you have done if you were one of the 30,000 people who converged on Jerusalem for the holiday and learned that Jesus was going to make an entrance into the city? If you were a follower of Jesus you would probably have laid your cloak down on the ground and if you were an activist against Roman rule like Judas, you would have laid down palm branches which were the sign of rebellion. What about today April 9 th, 2017? How is Jesus being welcomed into your life style sphere of knowledge and activities? Will your family and friends get to Mass to get some palm to put behind the picture of Jesus and forget about Him until some other religious holiday like Easter and Christmas? How do we deal with the people in our lives who only have a passing interest in who Jesus is and what He taught and why? These are not easy questions? We have two Cursillo weekends coming up and instead of 25+ people attending, we are lucky to get 10, but then again isn t that the same 15% percent of Baptized Catholics attending Mass regularly on Sunday and Holy Days except for the big ones? If Jesus were to come down today and enter every major city how many people will show up for the parade and when the City Councils and Mayors throw Him in prison because He didn t have a parade permit, who would show up at the court and sign their name on a petition to drop the charges? Think about it! Remember the charge you were given at the end of the weekend: Christ is counting on you and you said I am counting on Christ! Well, welcome to the real world. Of the hundreds of men and woman who have gone on weekends why don t we have Ultreyas all over the State of Maryland? We make sure we change the oil in our cars on a regular basis, but what about the Chrism oil we were anointed with at our Baptism and Confirmation? I was looking at the Cursillo rooster in my home office that someone gave me and I didn t think about my weekend and what I have tried to do for Christ in my lifetime, but I thought about Peter denying Jesus three times before the rooster crowed and I have decided to do something about it. What about you? Deacon R. Wm. 'Monti' Montalto deaconmonti@gmail.com Spiritual Advisor s Message by Deacon Monti Give a Gift of Faith This EASTER! 6 Your 4 th Day Message by Andy Roe How s it going everyone! Hope you are ready for Easter as its coming fast! Ultreya is a Spanish word meaning "onward!" In real terms, that's what happens after a weekend is over. Remember what happens to Jesus and His closest disciples after they come down from the mountain after the transfiguration? They immediately have to go back to work! The same holds true for us. As much as we'd like to stay at the retreat house forever, the real world beckons. Fortunately, we have spent three days learning how to live in a whole new way, and we have a community, a servant community who is ready and waiting to help us to live our fourth day, which is the rest of our life. At the heart of the 4th day is the Group Reunion. The Group Reunion is a small group, usually 4-6 people who meet weekly to share their piety, study and action with one another. They pray with and for one another. These people are the ones who often know you best, and who keep you closest to Christ in your fourth day. The Ultreya is a coming together of many different groups where you get to group with someone new. If you are not currently in a Group Reunion please get in touch with me and I can help remedy that situation! Hope to see you at an Ultreya sometime soon! Andy Roe aroe@alarmtechsolutions.com The National Cursillo Center published a great article awhile back on living our fourth day which you can find here: Here are some excerpts: Most of the time we spend our time and efforts searching for the perfect candidate. However, if we concentrate more on the person who has the capacity for conviction, decision, and constancy, you can rest assured they will capture the message presented during the Cursillo Weekend, and therefore live out their Fourth Day helping others live their lives with conviction, decision, and constancy. Conviction (piety) in directing our whole life to God, we establish an intimate relationship with Him, an open and personal friendship. It is absolutely necessary for us to have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ in order for our piety to be genuine. Decision (study) putting our minds at the service of the truth or applying our minds to learn the truth. In essence, it is the process of learning to love and respond in faith to reach our potential as persons; fully human and fully Christian. Only by fulfilling our potential can we begin to understand God s love for us, and begin to live in that love. Constancy (action) is the perfection of piety, dedicating our very lives to God by aligning our will to His will, and then doing what we have been asked to do. Action is responding to the command of Jesus written in John 13: Simply stated, Action is exercising the power to love just as Jesus has loved us. 7 Palanca by Darlene Conley Palanca is prayers, sacrifices and acts of mercy. Our Cursillo manual tells us that these are offered to God to obtain something and that palanca should accompany all evangelizing efforts. The Spanish word Palanca means "lever." Just as a lever allows a person to move things which are beyond their strength, therefore our prayers and sacrifices allow us to accomplish more than we would be capable of achieving. We should always be doing palanca in our daily lives. Example we can offer up any action of happiness, difficulty or suffering. For example when I go to mass I offer my thoughts, prayers and blessings of the Eucharist to my person or situation. Some other people may like doing novenas, rosary, adoration, or meditation. These are all good tools for palanca. Archbishop Borders once said, "Prayers are us responding to God and Grace is God responding to us." Without prayer or palanca nothing gets done. CURRENT PALANCA ACTIVITIES WITHIN OUR BALTIMORE CURSILLO MOVEMENT Palanca masses Where the community comes together for mass, palanca prayers, and some social time. We also announce all upcoming activities within our community. We have two Palanca Masses a year. Here are our dates please include them on your calendar: Oct , Apr. 28, 2018 and Oct. 27, All Palanca Masses are held at Holy Trinity Parish in Glen Burnie. Palanca for the US and Worldwide Cursillo Weekends. Every week we are notified of upcoming weekends and we respond with our palanca weekly. Palanca for our own weekends. This includes our Prayer crosses for the upcoming weekends, Prayers for the teams and potential candidates, and Novenas. Prayer Requests sending our prayers for the sick. Pilgrimages to Holy Places we usually plan at least one outing a year. Annual day of reflection at St Anthony's we usually pray for our movement on this gathering day. Adoration at St. Mary's in Annapolois Two times a month - Prayers for the Cursillo Movement. Personal Palanca - Some of what we can do individually as I mentioned above: rosary, novena, adoration, meditation, sacrifices and quiet prayer time to name a few. PALANCA MASS March 18, 2017 We had 22 Cursillistas in attendance. Deacon German Flores did our blessing and closing prayer. We owe a big thank you to Julie Ruf, Maureen Tomcala, Darlene Conley, and Bernadine Smith for getting the key and helping us to set up and clean up.

9 Day of Reflection by Tina Delaney On chilly Saturday, January 21 st, a group of 13 Cursillistas and friends gathered at the Shrine of St. Anthony in Ellicott City for a day of reflection. We gathered in the dining room of the Franciscan Friars, for some coffee and breakfast treats, then moved to the cozy library, where Fr. Michael Heine, OFM, Conv., awaited us. He had a fire going, and we sat on sofas and chairs around the hearth. Fr. Michael began with a history of the Shrine, which dates back to the founding of the colony of Maryland, was used as a formation house for friars, and today welcomes all as a pilgrimage destination. We explained to him what the Cursillo movement is, and introduced ourselves as we do at an Ultreya, giving our name, parish, date of when we made our Cursillo and table. This gave Fr. Michael an idea of how our friendship groups work. He asked us to share a high and low moment of the past week. (We told him this is similar to our close moments!). The topic of this day was the New Evangelization. Fr. Michael used John the Baptist as a perfect example of an evangelizer: He pointed to Christ. Since God is present through the highs and lows of our lives, we can be the pointer to Christ in the ordinary daily events. We must be creative to bring others to Christ. Consider the Gospel passage about the friends who brought their crippled friend to Jesus through the roof - now, that s creative! He told a story about a man stuck in a deep ditch, too weak to get out. Some people passed him by, others tried to reach down, but failed, and then an old man jumped in with him. Everyone thought the old man was silly to do that. But, the old man said to the trapped one, I know the way out. I ve been here. Jesus is the way. Let us be the ones to lead others to Jesus, and let Jesus lead the way for them. We had some free time to enjoy the peaceful house and grounds, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, celebrate Mass, share lunch together (delicious crab soup, too!), and reconvened in the library, where we practiced Lectio Divina, with the following Sunday s Gospel (Matthew 4:12-23). Fr. Michael asked what, if we had to preach from that Gospel passage, would we focus on? Everyone had different angles to share, and we were all enriched by our reflections and time together! We closed in prayer, feeling a deeper sense of community. De Colores!
