On the first day of the week God began creation, transforming darkness into light. On this, the eighth day of the week, Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. We celebrate this new creation in the waters of baptism and in the feast of victory. With great joy we celebrate this day of days, even as we begin the great fifty days of Easter. Filled with hope, we go forth to share the news that Christ is risen! Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. PRELUDE On the altar are the Holy Communion kits which are taken to our people who, for a variety of reasons cannot attend worship, to help them share in our celebration of the Lord s Supper. Come to celebrate the amazing good news. We gather for worship in awe and wonder. The tomb is empty; death is not the last word. Sing songs of praise, for God is good. God s steadfast love endures forever. God has answered our prayers. Jesus Christ is alive and we, too, shall live. Open your hearts and minds to the risen Christ. In our baptism, God claimed us, delivered us, and led us to freedom. Let us then, on this holy day, renew our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Do you renounce the devil, and all his works, and all his ways? I do. Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty? We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son? We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 2

3 Gracious Lord, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. EASTER MORNING GOSPEL John 20:1-18 Page 119 in the pew Bible This morning began with confusion: the stone was moved and the tomb was empty. Disciples arrive, then angels, and finally Jesus himself. Out of the confusion, hope emerges, and a weeping woman becomes the first to confess her faith in the risen Lord. The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Everyone is welcome at the Lord s Table and may receive the gifts of bread and wine. Gluten-free wafers are available by request and the chalice is divided to provide wine on the darker side and grape juice on the lighter side.
