1 Mission Lamp South Wisconsin District SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS! February 2018 The heart of God is behind all that we are and do... He has loved us so... seen in His only begotten Son... His cross and sacrifice His cherished blood for us... shed for the forgiveness of sins, Therefore, we lift high the cross of Christ... guiding our thanks and praise and service. So that His heart is impressed upon our own... and by the Spirit we are blessed with joy and peace. Our prayer is that this design will get people to take a new look or even a first look at LWML Lutheran Women in Mission, and will give our faithful members a sense that their organization is looking towards the future and ready for 75 more years of mission outreach. Have you shared this new logo with society members, your congregations, on websites and Facebook? Please help us share the new look of our beloved LWML. 1

2 LUTHERAN DEAF OUTREACH What began in 2011 with a Mission Grant Proposal to our LWML SWD (and approved at Convention in 2012) has continued to blossom and grow! Lutheran Deaf Outreach is so appreciative of our District and its prayers, concern, financial support and love for the deaf and our outreach to bring them to Jesus! I just thought everyone would like an update on that grant from 2012 and how it is continuing to grow! In the first ten months of 2017, over 200 deaf people have joined in training through the Jesus Signs Workshops! They are introduced to in-depth classes developed for deaf people. It is important for all deaf people to grow in faith and become trained in sharing their faith with others. God is also guiding many hearing people to learn religious signs to share their faith with their deaf families and friends! There are the beginning students wanting to share their faith with deaf family members. There are church members expanding their concepts of religious signs (Jesus Signs) to help teach Bible studies. There are interpreters attending to fine-tune their skills of religious interpreting. Lutheran Deaf Outreach (LDO) is looking to continue to expand the Jesus Signs Workshops to all areas of the country. We are reminded that 98% of deaf people do not believe or attend any Christian Church. Jesus wants ALL of His children to hear His precious Word! The goal is to train and equip people with Jesus Signs so they can share the Gospel with others! You can learn more, join with a Jesus Signs Workshop, or possibly host a Jesus Signs Workshop by getting more info at: by at: LutheranDeafOutreach@gmail.com, or contact either Pastor John Reinke or Pastor William Palmer. Just think, this was all started by a grant given by the ladies (and gentlemen) of the LWML SWD through their prayerfully given mites! Lutheran Deaf Outreach is proud to be a SWD based organization! Your prayers for continued support are so greatly appreciated! Linda Ault, LDO Sec t/treasurer Jana Hoffman, LDO Chairman SERVING WITH GLADNESS The public relations committee of the LWML SWD has added a new dimension to serving with gladness. Committee members have been taking a display table to South Wisconsin LCMS events in hopes of attracting people to the mission of LWML and explaining what events we have available for women to participate in. Often in the fast pace of the event they found the lack of time to actually talk to women or pastors attending. A new strategy was needed to achieve our goal of LWML awareness. Instead of telling people who we are and what we are doing we decided to show them. Volunteers are always needed at the LCMS gatherings with minor tasks such as handing out programs, greeting people, etc. and Jennifer Olen has set up a connection for us to do just that. Volunteer to serve. The 2018 Passionate Believer Conference, Jan. 27th, will be the first opportunity to volunteer, and it is coming soon. While you may not be available for this conference please watch for Jennifer's announcements for volunteers to serve. As Jennifer says, "This would be a terrific opportunity to wear your LWML purple attire and reflect our Serve the Lord with Gladness attitude." Contact Jennifer Olen at or olenjennifer@aol.com 2018 WINTER GETAWAY A record number of attendees (149) gathered on January 19th and 20th at the Holiday Inn Fond du Lac for the 2018 SWD Winter Getaway under the theme of Finding Faith in Films. Pastor Randy Raasch, Senior Pastor of First Immanuel in Cedarburg, was the keynote speaker and spoke of ways that we can share Christ s story with others through the use of popular Hollywood movies, television shows, and even books. Ladies were able to work on six different servant event opportunities including sorting the Ingathering items of diapers, wipes, hats, and mittens/gloves. God blessed us richly with fun and fellowship. Submitted by: Emily Woelfel 2018 Winter Getaway Chairman (EDITOR S NOTE: You can see fun pictures from the Winter Getaway on Page 3!) 5 Fall Retreat 2018 JESUS, SAVIOR, PILOT ME Sept , with an optional Thursday night stay Hilton Garden Inn, Oshkosh Keynote Speaker: Jan Struck We are excited to offer a new location for our Fall Retreat The Hilton Garden Inn, Oshkosh, right next to Wittman Regional Airport and the EAA grounds, is this year s destination. Running with the theme, Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me, we ll focus on Hymn 715 of the same title and Psalm 36:7 ESV How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. We are happy to announce that Jan Struck has consented to be our keynote speaker and Missionary-pilot Jonathan Federwitz, on furlough from work in Papua New Guinea, will be the mission/breakout speaker. Our Bible studies and speakers will focus on Jesus, our Savior, piloting us through life s ups and downs. The offering recipient for the retreat will be the LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces. The hotel has offered us a rate of $99, double occupancy, for both Thursday and Friday nights. Come early and enjoy all Oshkosh has to offer, some suggestions being: the EAA grounds and museum, Oshkosh Outlet Mall, Paine Art Center and Menominee Park Zoo, to name a few. More details to come in the next few months. Mark your calendars now! Hope to see you this fall. Debbie Netz, Chairman Our Facebook page is a great way for us to share ideas with you and each other, remind you of upcoming events, share pictures, ask questions and stay connected. So if you haven't already, "LIKE" us on Facebook and stay informed on the latest LWML SWD news and events. MITES REPORT Praise God from whom all blessing s flow! At the time of this writing we are currently working on Grant #7: Free at Last Ministry to Women (LCMS-SWD Mission) for $25, We are about halfway through in funding it. After that grant gets paid we still have four more SWD grants to fund, plus our 25% commitment to LWML. Since we only have five months left before convention, I pray you continue to pray for the grant recipients and continue to send your mites, so we can reach our mite goal before convention. I also want to remind all societies to get their Quarterly orders in to me before the March 15 deadline. To God Be The Glory! Diane Kamrath, Financial Secretary A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT Greetings! As we continue to strive to fulfill the promises we made at the 2016 convention to fund the grants, let us be reminded of one of our great hymns. The author points out that even if we may not be able to go to far off lands to be missionaries, we can still support the missionaries with our "prayers and bounties." Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling (vs. 3-4) By Daniel March If you cannot be a watchman, Standing high on Zion s wall, Pointing out the path to heaven, Offering life and peace to all, With your prayers and with your bounties You can do what God demands; You can be like faithful Aaron, Holding up the prophet s hands. Let none hear you idly saying, "There is nothing I can do," While the multitudes are dying And the master calls for you. Take the task he gives you gladly; Let his work your pleasure be. Answer quickly when he calls you, "Here am I. Send me, send me!" Thank you for your continued support of meeting our mite goal! Kristen Kolell VP of Special Focus Ministries and Mission Grants 5

6 AMY ENCOURAGES Greetings to you all- I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season. Looking forward to the next 6 months, the young women are planning a couple of more fun events. We are just in the planning stages now, so please watch for information in the coming weeks. Also, I ask everyone to diligently seek a young lady or two to come to these events, as well as the upcoming convention. Without getting the next generation involved, the LWML cannot grow or evolve. We need to spark interest in the hearts of these young ladies, but I can t do it with out you! Now back to the convention, which is where I was introduced to the LWML, and it changed my life. We are planning a fun night at the district convention, and I hope to see a ton of young women reps! The more the merrier! Remember, it may take more than one invitation for them to say yes, but if you offer to help get them there and tell them about the TLC fund or your society can cover their costs, they may be more willing to try it out! Get them involved and you ll be surprised at their eventual level of participation! God s blessings to you all! Amy Tikkanen Young Women s Committee The Mission Lamp is your news within the South Wisconsin District of the LWML. Please make copies of this to share in your society and church. You may also download a copy from lwml-swd.org. Lutheran Bible Translators has been in the literacy/translation business since The training is intensive, the commitment on the part of the missionary unparalleled. Years of study precedes any placement and translation work. But the goal of bringing the Scriptures to people in their heart language motivates and sustains, by God s grace. The reply to How many missionaries are there? on the LBT website is: As of 2016, there are missionaries directly under the care and supervision of Lutheran Bible Translators field administration and 23 associate missionaries primarily under the direction of other related organizations. Together they are working over 20 Bible translation projects, 60 Scripture Engagement programs, and four Language Development programs. This work is being done in over 50 different languages in 15 countries. Among these are the David Federwitz family and Amy Formella. Planning their relocation to Cameroon in March is the Derricks family (Elliot and Serena). Alvina Federwitz and her late husband spent many years in LBT ministry before retirement. Please pray for these and all other missionaries. Relocation and culture change, though less stressful than 50 years ago, means physical separation from family and friends. Any touch from home is always welcomed. If you wish to send greetings via USPS or , please contact me for that information. If you would like to send a Care Package, there are certain guidelines to follow. Please contact me for that information also. Marilyn Belter is kind enough to send greetings on behalf of LWML SWD on the occasion of missionary birthdays and wedding anniversaries. When you see her, thank her. She sometimes gets greetings in response and even this tiny effort is appreciated. I hope this information is helpful to you as we work to Engage, Encourage, Educate, Equip and Enjoy our collective work in LWML SWD. LuAnn Roman lwmllr@yahoo.com 6

11 FROM THE HEART OF PASTOR PETERS A blessed Epiphany to you, dear sisters in Christ. By the time you re reading this, the coming of the wise guys (Epiphany) will seem like a while ago, the celebration of our Lord s birth will seem like a long time ago, and the 500th anniversary celebration of the Lutheran Reformation will seem like a lifetime ago. Time flies in this life; tell me something I don t know Pastor. (that is unless you re 15 awaiting your driver s license.) Yet coming soon, in just over two Lord s Days, we will be journeying into the next season of the Church year; another period in the life of Jesus Christ our Lord. The beginning of Lent begins on February 14. And before anyone of you wise folks ask, I ll let you know that no, the ashes will not be going on your foreheads in the shape of a heart. However, you will be marked with the sign that identifies you as God s own child. (Eph. 1:13 & 2 Tim. 2:19) Your sign that marks you as one whom Christ claims to forgive and bring other amazing gifts, also brings burdens. Life as a Lutheran is not easy. At times we seem to have no clear identity of our own. While Roman Catholics typically view us as just another type of Protestantism, Protestants see us as Romanists-light. Lutheranism is a unique theological system with a distinct identity all our own. When we forget who we are, or when that green grass over at the theologically freer church whose parking lot seems awfully full and we start adopting their harmless ways, theological trouble is knocking at the door. When God s theological realities are not kept in balance, we not only lose our identity, we fall into heresy and it can happen before we know it. As the proverb states, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. So often we find ourselves moving into foreign fields to feed our fickle appetites, ignoring the grass given to feed us. The church s music is usually where this most frequently comes into play. Christian radio stations rarely play a hymn from our hymnal (unless you listen to Lutheran Public Radio over the internet great option!), choosing to play Michael W. Smith over Paul Gerhardt. What seems like a simple choice in taste or style masks the true theological dangers. One of the most glaring shifts occurs with the use of we in hymns to I in songs. This move changes the emphasis of the verbs from God and his amazing work to the effect of this amazing work on the listener. Compare this hymn (LSB 941-S. Starke) with a song frequently sung in our gatherings. We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord, The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored. To You all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing, The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring: O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth! Father I Adore You Father, I adore You Lay my life before You How I love You Jesus, I adore You Lay my life before You How I love You Spirit, I adore You Lay my life before You How I love You Our historic hymnody is so rich theologically, that to sing songs that don t deliver all the goods leaves our souls longing for more. I encourage you to consider the following points regarding our church s music. Rev. Richard Resch s article Music: Gift of God or Tool of the Devil is the source of this list. Music is a divine gift, which accompanies the highest divine gift: faith. By the way, the psalms are meant to be sung and chanted. Music is a gift in which all angels and heavenly hosts join mortals without ceasing. (Ps. 148:1,2) Music is ordained for use by the church. (Ps. 149:1, Ezr. 3:10,11) Music teaches doctrine to the church (Col. 3:16) By the way, we are always being catechized, and the fallen world and it s prince has much more time with you than your pastors. Music carries the confession of the faithful. (Ps. 145:4) Music is to be a full-throated response of praise and thanksgiving to God. (Ps. 149:5-6, 98:4, 147:7) Music heals, soothes and drives away the devil. (1 Sm. 16:23) Music is powerful. (2 Chr. 5:13-14-used properly, Dn 3:17-used improperly) Music in the church requires understanding and a proper spirit. (1 Cor. 14:15) Music in the church is led by those who are skilled. (1 Chr. 15:22) Ultimately, music is a servant of the means of grace; God s Word and Sacraments. All one needs to do is look at the way in which we Lutherans have worshiped for the past 500 years. Luther reminds us that music is next to theology. Therefore, I encourage you to consider the ten points listed above when contemplating the music of the church and how it serves The Lutheran Women s Missionary League. Better yet, pick up a hymnal for your home and visit CPH for a plethora of fantastic CD s, filled with your favorite hymns. Rejoice, beloved; rejoice in all that confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior especially our distinct hymnody found in our church s hymnals! In Christ, Pastor Peters 11
