1 Spiritual Gifts & Corresponding Service Roles ADMINISTRATION (Romans 12:6-8) You have the gift of administration! This is a really important gift in our church. As an administrator you have the capacity to serve by organizing and leading some much- needed details of ministry. You tend to be a take- charge person. You put a plan together and like to see it through. You probably lean towards organizing things or towards organizing people. If you like organizing things, you will like administrating the details but may struggle with finding the right people to see your plan through. If you like organizing people, you need to assemble people who get your vision. Carefully identify those people because you will rely on them to take care of the little things. As you start to use your gift, you will notice when things become fragmented. This bothers you and your gift is to harmonize the whole program when given a chance. You are probably a perfectionist and want things done the right way (i.e. - your way) the first time. Beware of Satan's attack on your gift. He can cause pride because of your ability to see a better way. This can also lead to selfishness because of success. Also, when things don t go as you plan, be careful of blame shifting, discouragement and frustration. Don t get angry with or mistreat those who disagree with your plans. Be more concerned about people rather than tasks. Be more concerned about the spiritual growth than the completion. Guard your motives. Enjoy the process rather than just getting the job done. Be willing to admit that, although to others you appear to be organized, you sometimes aren't organized. Make decision in reliance on God s Word and God s Spirit rather than simply what you think is best. As you use your gift, take the opportunity to study what the Bible says about grace. 1. 2 EVANGELISM (Romans 12:6-8, Ephesians 4:11) You have the gift of evangelism! This is a really important gift in our church. You are a person who loves the opportunity to share about Jesus Christ, either publicly by telling a group of friends or personally by sitting in a living room or on a plane. God loves it as you tell people about His Son, Jesus. As an evangelist you are likely outgoing and personable. You can talk to anyone and aren t afraid to ask questions about their life - such as where they work, what hobbies they have, what's their favorite sports team, where they were born, and do they attend church. This opens the door to talk about their relationship with Jesus Christ - something you're just itching to do. You have great joy in seeing people come to Christ and are often passionate to tell people about the Gospel. Rather than waiting for opportunities to share Jesus, you will often make opportunities. You influence people. But, you must be careful not to be forceful or un- biblically offensive. Remember that your influence isn t just with the lost. You also have a chance to influence other followers of Jesus to share. Consider taking a new Christian under your wing. Share your experiences with him or her and provide encouragement. No matter what you do, continue to look for opportunities to share Jesus with others. It s great for you to encourage other followers of Jesus to be bold in their witness. However, you must be careful not to belittle them or make them feel unspiritual because they do not have the same burden for lost souls that you do. People may tend to think you are pushy, that you are more interested in numbers than people, and that you judge their spirituality by the number of souls they have led to Jesus. Beware that Satan can attack your gift by causing pride in your number of converts, causing you to see people as numbers rather than people with needs. Don t be discouraged when converts are few or infrequent. Remember, God is glorified in the proclamation of the Gospel, whether or not individuals respond to it. Lastly, remember that there is much more to following Christ than JUST telling people about Jesus. Yes, it is very important, but it isn t the ONLY thing. 1. Evangelism Team Leader 2. 3 EXHORTATION (Romans 12:6-8, Ephesians 4:11) You have the gift of exhortation! This is a really important gift in our church. You are a "how to" person with the gift to motivate others to action by urging them to pursue spiritual things. In a leadership position, you are able to explain how to apply God's Word to a specific area of life. Unlike others, you can present the Bible in such a way that it advances change in an individual s life. Simply said, you help Christians become more mature. As an exhorter, you are a very practical person, a good counselor, tolerant of others, serious- minded, and orderly, but sometimes impulsive. You can be expressive in a group setting, but the group listens when you speak. The great thing is that you are comfortable working both one- on- one and in a group. Don t stop being enthusiastic and talkative. Enjoy God using you to encourage others! Unlike the gift of a teacher, you have a willingness to teach the same material again and again, updating and perfecting it as you do. Keep doing that! Be careful not to interrupt other people in your enthusiasm. But, don t feel guilty about your enthusiasm. You often know the truth to speak into a person s life, but you may need to learn the timing of when to speak it. As you counsel individuals, work to empathize with their struggle. Rather than just speak to them about their issues, bear their burden with them. Beware of pride in your ability to see and speak the truth. Don t lose sight of people because of emphasis on spiritual progress. On the other side, don't become discouraged when results are not evident. Lastly, your ability to exhort is powerful. Don t use your gift to encourage others to do the wrong things through your persuasive abilities. We love your burden to show how the Bible relates to the way we live. We agree with you - God's will and His Word have the answers for every problem. Keep making decisions logically and orderly. 1. Fellowship Group Leader 2. Fellowship Group Apprentice Leader 3. 4 GIVING (Romans 12:6-8) You have the gift of giving generously! This is a really important gift in our church. As a giver you have the desire to serve God by giving of yourself generously to others. You have a strong desire to meet the needs of your family, friends and church. We love that about you! As a giver, you probably feel that the best way you can give is to offer finances or gifts to those you see in need. However, your giving may not always be financial; it may sometimes be time, energy, things, etc. You probably like to give without public recognition and usually do not want people to know who you are nor how much is given. Your motive is usually to meet real needs, not to show off or get something in return. You are usually well organized and keep to yourself. You typically have an accurate self- image. You are genuinely interested in helping people. Personally, you are conscientious and self- disciplined. If you have the ability to make money, you enjoy using that ability to help others. Be careful not to measure other Christians' spirituality by their giving. Realize that though God has called everyone to give, He has not called everyone to give as you do. With that, people may misunderstand your giving as being materialistic, and some people may be jealous of you. Don t take pride because of the amount you give. Remember that we are called not only to meet others physical needs but also their spiritual needs. Make sure you have the right motives for giving and serving Christ. Also, remember you can still give even if it is not tax deductible. Continue to be sensitive to the needs of others, alert to needs others overlook, ready to give. Work hard to make sure your gift is the best quality, but don t feel the need to ensure your gift is used properly. 1. Service Project Coordinator 2. 1 to 1 Discipleship 3. 5 MERCY SHOWING (Romans 12:6-8) You have the gift of mercy! This is a really important gift in our church. As a mercy- shower, you have the capacity to empathize with those who are in distress and comfort them. You are great at understanding others hurts and offering hope to them. You enter into the grief or happiness of others and have the ability to show empathy- feeling with others, not just for others. As a mercy- shower, you are willing to deal with and minister to people who have needs that most people feel very uncomfortable working with. You often say the right thing at the right time. Your personality is likely one of soft- spoken love. It probably hurts you to scold someone because you tend not to want to condemn others. People love you because of all the love you give them. You find it easy to express yourself and are outgoing with an easy- going personality. You are easy to talk to, a good listener, peaceable, and agreeable. You tend to make decisions based on how you feel about a person or situation and like to think about things for a while before making a decision. In your burden to comfort others, your heart goes out to the poor, the aged, the ill, the underprivileged, and so on. With that, you tend to attract people who are hurting or rejoicing because you identify with them. Be careful not to let others use you. Try not to resent others who can t empathize like you or even with you. You should also be careful about becoming a gossiper when you are around other mercy- showers. Because of your ability to show mercy, others may accuse you of being too loyal, a pushover, or a compromiser. They also may think you are too emotional. Beware of pride in your ability to relate to others. Despite how badly you may feel, don t disregard rules and authority. You could make an excellent counselor if you can grow in your ability to speak the truth. You also have to be cautious with the tendency to take people's problems home with you. Your empathy can become detrimental without the personal discipline of trusting things to the Lord. 1. Foster Care Ministry Worker 2. LAMP Mentor 3. Community Outreach Leader 4. 6 SHEPHERD (Romans 12:6-8, Ephesians 4:11) You have the gift of shepherd! This is a really important gift in our church. As a shepherd, you have the capacity to serve by overseeing and caring for the needs of a group of Christians. You are usually very patient, people- focused, and willing to spend time with others. You tend to be a multi- skilled person, meaning you are usually dominant in one of the speaking gifts (evangelist, prophet, teacher, and exhorter) as well. You are often authoritative- more a leader than a follower. You can be expressive but are usually composed and sensitive. Your pleasing personality draws people to you. You have a burden to see others learn and grow and are protective of those under your care. You want to present the whole Word of God. You are willing to study what is necessary to feed God s people but are more relationship- oriented than task- oriented. You are a peacemaker and diplomat and are typically tolerant of people's weaknesses. You tend to remember people's names and faces. You are more concerned with doing for others than others doing for you. You are faithful and devoted, but you can become a workaholic. Be careful to do it all yourself; involve others. Work on making people accountable. Do not be overly protective of people in the areas that God is pursuing them for greater growth. Because of these potentially weak areas, other people may think it is your job to do all the work. They will begin to rely on you more than they should. You cannot be expected to be available at all times, know all the answers, and lead every meeting. Learn to say no. Watch out for discouragement when the load gets heavy and pride because the "sheep" look up to you. If you are a parent, guard your family time and attention. People with the gift of shepherding make the best group leaders because their desire is to go beyond just teaching or leading. They desire to minister to the daily needs of God s sheep. 1. 7 PROPHECY (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, Ephesians 4:11) You have the gift of prophecy! This is a really important gift in our church. You are a person who speaks the truth regarding the things of God: preaching, speaking, and teaching God's Word. Now, don t worry; this doesn t mean you have visions of the future. Rather, you are very discerning. You have the God- given ability to point out sin with the goal of repentance. You are great at telling people the truth. As a prophet you have an ability to see what s wrong with a person, relationship, or situation. In fact, you tend to easily spot what is wrong and sometimes have to look pretty closely to find something that is right. You probably spend much time thinking and even grieving over the sins of others and for lost people. You often carry a great burden over the sinful condition of the world around you. Because of this, you usually take the opportunity to tell people about Jesus. You have a strong sense of duty. You can be very opinionated and impatient. You tend to be more depressed or serious rather than lighthearted. You enjoy being alone, but would rather be in a group than relate to people one- on- one. You are often good at speaking publicly. You are able to make quick decisions and like to see things done right. Be careful to let the Holy Spirit convict people rather than trying to convict them yourself. Work on being more patient and tactful. You often know the right thing to say, but make sure you say it at the right time. Beware of speaking with a lack of compassion and forgiveness. Don t let an unrepentant person cause you discouragement. You aren t the one who changes people. Don t be enticed by the very sins you speak against. Guard against pride and self- righteousness. Other people will think you are demanding, that you enjoy hurting people's feelings, and that you have no understanding. One of your greatest challenges is to keep a spirit of love. Remember to "speak the truth in love" (Eph. 4:15) and not be judgmental. As you keep a tender, loving heart, you will be a blessing in your home, church, and to individuals. You can make a real impact on their spirituality. 1. Fellowship Group Leader 2. Fellowship Group Apprentice Leader 3. 1 to 1 Discipleship 4. LAMP Leader 5. Evangelism Team Leader 6. 8 SERVING (Romans 12:6-8) You have the gift of serving! This is a really important gift in our church. As a server you have the capacity to serve by offering practical help in both physical and spiritual matters. You enjoy meeting the needs of others. Nothing would get done without people like you! You may look around at other people s gifts and think your gift is less desirable. Don t! Never think it is anything less; it only becomes less if you do not use it as God intended. As a server, you are the person who is willing to do a million and one necessary tasks in our church. You probably don t realize that your love for the Lord is showing every time you serve. You are probably happy working behind the scenes. You are ambitious, often involved in a variety of activities, and enjoy projects. You are usually loyal, sincere, tolerant, faithful, and devoted. Most people find you easy- going and likable. You are good at listening to others without being critical. You don t like to be in the spotlight and prefer not to express yourself publicly. Be careful that you complete what you start and do not neglect the needs of your own family by trying to meet the many needs of others. Make sure you keep the priorities God has put in your life. We love that you are quick to respond to needs. However, because of this, you often find it difficult to say no. You should learn to say no. As you submit your decision to the Lord, don t be worried when some people consider you a workaholic. You tend to emphasize practical needs over spiritual needs. Remember to care not just for the person s physical needs but also for their spiritual needs. Guard against becoming proud because of the work you do. On the other side, guard against feeling insignificant because of your gift. You like to support the leaders, and our leaders need your support. We love that you are quick to respond to needs. 1. 9 TEACHING (Romans 12:6-8, Ephesians 4:11) You have the gift of teaching! This is a really important gift in our church. As a teacher, you are one who communicates knowledge and guides others towards God s truth. You likely enjoy more in- depth study of the Bible. You have the capacity to serve by making clear the truth of God's Word with accuracy. As a teacher, you live to learn and share. You should learn to teach in two manners that may be contrary to your nature. First, you need to learn how to use this gift with simplicity so that individuals can understand it. Second, you need to learn how teach so that God s Word is practical. You love God s Word, enjoy reading, may be a little shy of strangers, are sometimes creative and imaginative, and prefer teaching groups over individuals. You are somewhat confident, self- disciplined, and can be technical. You are kind of a nerd because you love charts, graphs, and lists. You would sometimes rather just do research. The misuse of the Bible upsets you. You are so concerned with accuracy that you often dwell on the trivial, giving others the feeling that you give too many details. Some may even think you are boring. Be careful that you are not critical of people who differ with your preference regarding a passage. Do not measure other people's spirituality by their amount of Bible knowledge. Be willing to listen as well as talk. If you score high in the gift of teaching and very low in the gift of shepherding, you probably won't make a good group leader, although you think you do. Your tendency will be to relay knowledge and not shepherd or minister to the needs of people. Ask your leaders how you can grow in this. The church needs teachers who can shepherd, not just dispense knowledge. You may be good as a small group leader, but you will have to attend church faithfully to get that opportunity. Find a place to develop your gift while you faithfully serve. 1. FCM Director on Duty 2. FCM Teacher 3. Fellowship Group Leader 4. Fellowship Group Apprentice Leader 5. 10 FAITH (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) You have the gift of faith! This is a really important gift in our church. As a person of faith, you have the ability to trust God and act with unwavering belief in His ability. Your gift is often expressed in a strong prayer life. People will often tell you they wish they had your faith because you live with a constant awareness that God is working, whether others see it or not. You are often certain that God will bring something to pass and are a reliable friend during trials. You can also help others to see God working in trials. This gift is a practical gift. However, you may scare other people with your confidence. You can sometimes be irritated by criticism, as you consider personal criticism to be criticism against God and His will. Probably the biggest danger for you with this gift is that you sometimes try to project your gift onto other people. Remember, your faith is active. It isn't only God's work; you must be willing to obey His commands. God works through people in reaching the lost and in helping Christians grow. If you have this gift, you might look at and critique others asking, "Why don t they have the vitality I see in the Bible? Is it because the Spirit is different or absent?" Recognize that God is at work in them, but it may not look the same way that His work looks in you. Use your gift to encourage the fainthearted and strengthen the weak. Seek opportunities to pray with those who lack faith, but also enjoy the fruit of God answering your prayer. 1. Prayer Team Leader 2. Prayer Team Member 3. Foster Care Ministry Worker 4. 11 DISCERNMENT (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) You have the gift of discernment! This is a really important gift in our church. You have the ability to distinguish between truth and error and identify deception in character and in relationships. The word discernment means, to separate. Your gift is often closely associated with prophecy. Your gift of discernment gives you a keen sense of insight that enables you to recognize potential or actual problems in relationships. You are also sensitive to imbalance in teaching or misuse of Scripture. Your gift is governed by your knowledge of God s Word. You enjoy studying the Bible because it stirs up your ability to use your gift. You tend to be a good listener and have an ability to recognize small, even seemingly insignificant, points that are important in counseling a person. Once you know the truth, you can clearly pick out the problem or offer steps that need to be taken. This gift is a practical gift. Christians with this gift can often recognize the true motives of people and also recognize when a person is distorting the truth or communicating error. Be cautious that you do not abuse your gift. There are many people with this gift that use it far from God's will. Also, beware of judging motives. Though you may be able to recognize the true motives because of your gift, allow the Holy Spirit to convict and change the person. Do not take on the role of the Holy Spirit to expose and correct problems in the other person's life. Learn to use this gift skillfully by seeking help from others who are gifted in wisdom, counseling, and shepherding. Their care with your insight is powerful. 1. FCM Director on Duty 2. Fellowship Group Leader 3. Fellowship Group Apprentice Leader 4. Foster Care Ministry Leader 5. LAMP Mentor 6. Evangelism Team Leader 11

12 KNOWLEDGE (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) You have the gift of knowledge! This is a really important gift in our church. You have the ability to analyze information and recognize truth. You probably enjoy studying, doing research, and digging for principles of truth. You like to assess and accumulate information, facts, and data that some may think is trivial. You are a great help to teachers and preachers. Seek to grow in your ability to communicate these truths. This gift is a practical gift. You may feel like staying at home in a book or studying, but we need your gift to be used in the church. Although it is okay to spend countless hours researching information, ask yourself what you are doing with the information you have gained. How can God use your knowledge to build His church? One of the places you can use your gift is in ideas and problem solving through gathering information and studying. There are a great deal of ministries and programs that could use your insight and thoughtfulness to grow God s work. You probably have a low need for people, but it is important that you learn to interact with others. As you have opportunity, don t just learn through reading and study. Seek to learn by studying and analyzing personal experience. Watch for a tendency to be reclusive. You will have to balance time alone studying with pursuit of close relationships. This gift is valuable for protecting God s church from error as well as guiding others in truth. Seek to grow your ability to communicate the things you learn into application in others lives and, most importantly, in your own life. 1. Connect Table Leader 2. FCM Director on Duty 3. 13 LEADERSHIP (Romans 12:6-8) You have the gift of leadership! This is a really important gift in our church. You have the ability to instill vision, to motivate, and to direct people to accomplish the work of the ministry. You are a "goal setter" in the church. You often sense the direction in which God wants to move the body of Christ. You can motivate people to move in that direction. Take the opportunities to think about and communicate the potential you see in other people. You are often focused on the greater goal of the group and are not overly concerned with the details. Identify people who you can trust and delegate tasks to them to accomplish the greater goal. Leaders are visionaries. Leaders must have followers- a visionary without followers is not a leader. With that, your relationships are really important. Grow in your love not only for God but also for the people you are leading. They need to have the sense that you have their best interest at heart, that you walk with God, and that the vision you have is not of your own concoction. Your gift will be proven over time; there needs to be proven faithfulness here. With your gift, you will face opposition. You need the ability to press forward in the face of doubt. However, you also need the humility to admit when you are wrong. With your visibility, you are going to receive lots of feedback. Be keenly aware of your own heart. God will grow your faithfulness and diligence in both success and failure, but no matter what, rely on Him. You sometimes have a tendency of running ahead without clarity from God on the direction. Seek Him first. Identify those with the gift of service that will be able to accomplish the great things God will do through you. 1. Any Service Team Leader 2. Church Event Planner 3. 14 ENCOURAGEMENT (Romans 12:6-8) You have the gift of encouragement! This is a really important gift in our church. You have the ability to strengthen and affirm those who are discouraged in their faith. You love to comfort those who are hurting. You often urge others to apply the Bible to their lives. Your gift is not just a gift of friendliness and cheerleading. You are able to get alongside wavering or discouraged people and effectively challenge them to be all they can be spiritually. When you are around these people, you are helpful in encouraging them to fight the good fight. You tend to be very positive, full of faith, and reassuring. You also like to see results and become concerned when there are inconsistencies in a person s faith. You are very practical and pragmatic. Others see you as expressive, and they often view you as an emotional person. You should understand the importance of emotions, but also be concerned with knowing and doing God's will. Be cautious about making things too simple. Stay away from pithy, cheap encouragement. Take the time to listen to the person in order to know how to encourage them. The individual may simply need your company. Your outlook of joy can make others feel as if you haven't really connected with their hurt; it makes them wonder if you really understand. Take time to learn about what they're going through before helping to build them up. Seek opportunities before or after the worship service to share your joy with others. If you think something about a person, tell them. They probably need to hear it! 1. FCM Teacher 2. FCM Helper 3. Fellowship Group Leader 4. 15 APOSTLESHIP (Ephesians 4:11) You have the gift of apostleship! This is a really important gift in our church. You have the ability to start new works of ministry and oversee their development. The word apostleship primarily means a delegate, envoy, or messenger. In its first use in the Bible, it referred to the select few who held the office of apostle in the early church. These were men who had seen the resurrected Lord and possessed a commission from Christ. These men were God s special gift in the founding of the church. This is not what your gift is referring to. Rather, you have a heart to preach the Gospel to people in a different cultural setting who haven't heard it. You probably love to go across cultures and may enjoy starting new churches. You regularly have new ideas for reaching more people and often have a hard time keeping track of all the new ideas. This gift will be maximized as you grow the gift of leadership. Guard yourself against serving in places where you are required to do a lot or all of the work. You may desire to cut a new path before you are ready to move away from your present ministry efforts. Make certain that there are appropriate provisions for the people whom God has entrusted to you in your present ministry. You have a great gift, and we can t wait to see what God will create through you! 1. Evangelism Team Leader 2. Fellowship Group Leader 3. Fellowship Group Apprentice Leader 4. 16 WISDOM (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) You have the gift of wisdom! This is a really important gift in our church. You have the ability to effectively apply spiritual knowledge to specific circumstances and relationships. There is only a small difference between the gift of wisdom and knowledge. The simplest difference is that a person with your gift of wisdom more naturally connects the truth of the Bible to other people s lives. You enjoy applying Biblical principles to a variety of life situations. People recognize that you have more common sense than most others and will come to you for advice. You tend to enjoy considering tough moral or ethical situations and are good at narrowing the conversation to the heart of the issue. Look to use your gift to apply spiritual truth to everyday life. But guard yourself against becoming spiritually weary with the regular pursuit of those facing complicated spiritual problems. Prioritize your time with the Lord and in His Word to refresh yourself. Take time to praise the Lord for the correct decisions and judgments that He has given to you. Remember, before you can communicate God's truth, it must first come in. Don't sit on your Bible knowledge as though you "have enough." This gift of wisdom has greater impact as your knowledge of God's Word grows and as you become more involved in other people's lives. 1. 17 HEALING (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) You have the gift of healing! This is a really important gift in our church. With this gift, you are God's channel to restore people to health through prayer or direction. There are many kinds of healing in the body of Christ. You have a gift that offers an avenue of God's power for physical healing, emotional healing, or relational healing. You will often see God's power released through personal prayer. Healing also includes the use of "natural" means. Keep this amazing gift in perspective. Although God does miraculously heal, this is not His normative way of working through the church. The Bible is clear that God's primary way of working is through process such as through His redemptive plan and growing people. To expect that healing be normative in the church or that the church should be focused on this ministry is contrary to God's purpose for the church as expressed in the Bible. With that said, seek to often pray with people for healing. Guard your heart against making the prayer more about your gift than about God. You have seen God work powerfully before, and you can t wait to see Him work like that again. Partner with those with the gift of faith for even more powerful ministry. We can t wait to see how God will use your gift to minister to His church! 1. Prayer Team Leader 2. Prayer Team Member 3. LAMP Mentor 4. Foster Care Ministry Worker 5. Community Outreach Leader 17
