2 OUR HISTORY LORD BADEN POWELL Baden-Powell served in the British Army from 1876 until 1910 in India and Africa. In 1899, during the Second Boer War in South Africa, Baden- Powell successfully defended the town in the Siege of Mafeking. Several of his military books, written for military reconnaissance and scout training in his African years, were also read by boys. Based on those earlier books, he wrote Scouting for Boys. In 1907, he held the first Brownsea Island Scout camp, which is now seen as the beginning of Scouting.

3 OUR HISTORY VENERABLE JACQUES SEVIN While studying theology in preparation for his priestly ordination, Sevin became fascinated with the scouting movement. When two articles in the Jesuit periodical Etudes critical of the scouting movement appeared, Sevin was asked by his superiors to investigate the movement; he traveled to England in 1913 where he attended a scout rally in London and met Lord Baden-Powell himself.

4 OUR HISTORY VENERABLE JACQUES SEVIN By 1919 Fr. Sevin had produced a handbook on scouts called Le Scotisme. In this book he laid out his vision for a distinctly Catholic form of Scouting. In 1920 he founded the Scouts de France using this model. Baden- Powell said of Fr. Sevin s efforts: He made the best realization of my own thoughts. Fr. Sevin s vision was for scouting to develop the faith of young people and integrate them into the Church. It would be a means to develop committed lay people and religious vocations.

5 "The meeting of the Scout method with the insights of Fr Sévin, S.J., has made it possible to develop an educational programme based on Gospel values, in which each young person is led to grow and to develop his personality, thus making his talents fruitful. The Scout law, training young people in the way of virtue, invites them to moral rectitude and a spirit of asceticism, thus directing them to God and calling them to serve their brethren; by striving to do good, they become men and women who can play a responsible role in the Church and in society. In a troop, at camp and in other situations, Scouts discover the Lord through the wonders of creation, which they are called to respect. They also have a valuable experience of ecclesial life, meeting Christ in personal prayer, to which they can become accustomed, and in the Eucharistic celebration." -ST. JOHN PAUL II

6 WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE We deliver a Christ-centered program experience where each member strives to become an Ordinary Saint through: love, service, hard work, dedication, honesty, integrity, compassion, courage, prudence, and by embracing the Sacraments of the church. We hold true to our values and ideals even if society may be moving in a different direction. FNE offers 4 unique program levels: Otters (ages 6-8), Timber Wolves (ages 8-12), Explorers ages (ages 12-16) and Wayfarer Explorers ages (ages 17-24).

8 THE TIMBER WOLF PROMISE I promise to do my best to be faithful to God, my country, and my parents, to keep the law of the Timber Wolf den, and to do a good turn for somebody every day.

9 TIMBER WOLF LAWS The timber wolf thinks of others first. The timber wolf opens his eyes and his ears. The timber wolf is always clean. The timber wolf always tells the truth. The timber wolf is always happy.

10 OUR EMBLEM The Maltese cross evokes the ancient ideal chivalry, particularly that of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The red color represents the blood Our Savior shed on the Cross for us. The golden color of the fleur-de-lys symbolizes the light of Christ. It is the symbol used on old maps to point north and likewise points us to Christ. The three petals remind us of the ideals of an Explorer: freedom, dedication and purity. The eight points of the Maltese Cross symbolize the Eight Beatitudes with which Our Lord opened the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-10).

11 OUR UNIFORM We are uniquely a uniformed movement (one for males and another for females). Our youth proudly wear their uniforms as part of their program experience. The uniform Includes: navy skirt, skort or scooter blue button up shirt knee-high socks beret belt leather pouch with manual leather hooks one with a rosary the other with a rope neckerchief

12 REGINA CAELI FNE GROUP The Black Hills Area FNE Group Initiated on the feast of the Queenship of Mary Neckerchief Colors Gold: to signify the royal crown of Our Lady, a nod to our diocesan crest which features a ring of gold, the gold rush of the Black Hills, and the golden wheat of the prairie. Black: for the distinctive color and namesake of our beloved hills, and, as in traditional Byzantine iconography, it is a symbol of the incomprehensible depth of the universe of which our Lady reigns supreme.
