Who is my neighbour? Serving our neighbour through local churches is the core activity of the Diakonia Council of Churches. Only once we understand and accept the depth of this question can we really respond to the call to serve our neighbour and allow them to serve us. 5

When asked which commandment was the first of all, Jesus quoted the ancient law from the Old Testament: You shall love the Lord your God... You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these Mark 12:29/31 6

But who is my neighbour? 7

We find you, Lord, in others need, we see you in our neighbour... And what we do, we do to you, incarnate in our neighbour. Giles Ambrose 8

Do we avoid our neighbours by going to church? 9

Jesus said: Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me. Matthew 25:40 10

Who is my neighbour? Who is my family? 11

I m 14 and I look after my four younger sisters and brothers. I go out on the street, and men take me to do what they want with me, and then pay me. I can buy food and school things for my family. Diakonia 2008 Good Friday Service. 12

Am I your neighbour? 13

In his fellow human beings, Jesus saw not sin and guilt but brokenness, confusion, and fear. The people whom the scribes and Pharisees called sinners, Jesus saw as the sick who needed a doctor. Nolan: Jesus today 14

How can I work for economic and environmental justice so that, as I welcome the poor and the sick as my neighbour, I am also working to change their conditions? 15

The universe is one interconnected whole. We are not separate and independent parts. Nolan: Jesus today 16

So what we do to our neighbour, we do to ourselves? 17

When I needed a neighbour, were you there, were you there? I was hungry and thirsty... I was cold, I was naked...when I needed a shelter, were you there, were you there? 18

Wherever you travel, I'll be there, I'll be there. And the creed and the colour and the name won't matter, I'll be there. Will you? 19

Jesus said: Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? The lawyer said: The one who showed him mercy. 20

Jesus said: Go and do likewise. Am I a neighbour to those battered and injured by life? 21

Is my neighbour the mother with HIV praying that her children are not affected? 22

How do I respond to this neighbour in need? When she needed a neighbour, was I there? 23

Jesus said: You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matthew 5:43/44 24

In what ways do I show love to my enemies? 25

Jesus practiced what he preached: he loved his enemies. Nolan: Jesus today Yet we often find it hard to love our neighbour. 26

How do I treat my enemy when my enemy is now my neighbour? 27

Can I wear the shoes of my neighbour who is very different from me, or who shocks me, just for one day? 28

Perhaps then I would find out how my neighbour feels. 29

Jesus spirituality is largely about how we relate to people loving our neighbour. Even our relation to God is most often experienced in our attitude to people. Nolan: Jesus today 30

Does this mean that my harsh and critical words to my neighbours reflects my relati nship with God? Is it that obvious? 31

Jesus said: Why do you see the speck in your neighbour s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?... You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour s eye. Luke 6:

Jesus said: One who knows everything else but does not know him/herself, knows nothing. Gospel of Thomas 67 Jesus goes to the heart of the matter. Nolan: Jesus today 33

Few things made Jesus as angry as a total lack of gratitude and appreciation. This we see in his parable about the unforgiving servant.... Such a refusal to forgive demonstrates a quite unbelievable ungratefulness to God who has been so good to all of us. Nolan: Jesus today 34

In what ways do I show forgiveness to my neighbours? 35

Cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:16 36

Are the oppressed, the orphans, the widow, my neighbours? What does that mean for me? What does that mean for my church? 37

Jesus said: I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10b What difficulties and obstacles to a full life do I put in the way of my neighbour? 38

Can I clear away my own prejudices from my heart and mind, my eyes, my ears and really listen to my neighbour? 39

Where is my neighbourhood? Do I know the people who live there? Do I even want to know them? 40

Lord, overwhelm me with your love, so that I am no longer afraid to love my neighbour. 41

Diakonia service to our neighbours involves both giving and receiving. For many it seems to be easier to give than to receive. 42

How can I be free to allow others to be neighbours to me? Who is my neighbour? 43

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. St Francis of Assisi 44

Who is my neighbour? How can I love my neighbour as myself? 45
