2. Jesus Teaching In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning till the day he was taken up into heaven (Acts 1:1-2)

2. Pondering, Sharing 3. Sharing with people who had never met Jesus! 1. Pondering, Sharing

In Mark, Jesus is presented primarily as the Teacher. Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time [kairos] is fulfilled. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent. Believe in the good news.

To access Jesus teaching we are invited to watch Jesus actions. We see Jesus teaching in what he does. Mark 1:21-28 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.

Jesus Teaching Luke 4:14-15 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

Jesus agenda (Luke 4:16-21) When Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written [Isaiah 62:1-2]: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them? (Isaiah 58:6-7) Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.

Matthew 5:3-10 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Luke 5:36-39 (Mark 2:21-22) He also told them a parable: No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise the new will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, The old is good.

Luke 6:27-28 I say to you that listen, Love (agapaô) your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. Luke 6:35-36 Love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 8:4-8 (Mark 4:1-9) When a great crowd gathered and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold. As he said this, he called out, Let anyone with ears to hear listen!

Only in Mark Parable of the Seed Growing by Itself 4:26-29 He also said, The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Jesus delight in his disciples Luke 10:21-24 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.

Love Luke 10:25-28 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, What is written in the law? What do you read there? He answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself. And Jesus said to him, You have given the right answer; go on doing this and you will live.

Luke 10:29 Wanting to justify himself. the lawyer asked Jesus, And who is my neighbour? Sirach 12:1-7 If you do good, know to whom you do it, and you will be thanked for your good deeds. Do good to the devout, and you will be repaid if not by them, certainly by the Most High. No good comes to one who persists in evil or to one who does not give alms. Give to the devout, but do not help the sinner. Do good to the humble, but do not give to the ungodly; hold back their bread, and do not give it to them, for by means of it they might subdue you; then you will receive twice as much evil for all the good you have done to them. For the Most High also hates sinners and will inflict punishment on the ungodly. Give to the one who is good, but do not help the sinner.

1 A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 2 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 3 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 3+ But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. 2+ Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 1+ The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend. Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? He said, The one who showed him mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise.

Attentive listening to God is essential for real love Martha and Mary Luke 10:38-42 (see John 11) Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted (iso gashii) by her many tasks (diakonia); so she came to him and asked, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work (diakonein) by myself? Tell her then to help me. The Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her. compare Mark 3:14 (with him and sent out to preach)

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. He said to them, when you pray, say: Father, may your name be hallowed. (Isaiah 29:23) May your reign come. Luke 11:1-4 Give us each day the bread we need. (see Proverbs 30:8) Jerome supersubstantial ) And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it (1Corinthians 10:13).

Our real treasure comes from God Luke 12:22-28 He said to his disciples, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you you of little faith!

Our real treasure comes from God Luke 12:29-34 Do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Luke 12:49 I have come to cast fire upon the earth and how I wish it were blazing already. Teilhard de Chardin 1934 Some day, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides and gravitation, We shall harness for God the energies of Love. And then, for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire.

God s invitation goes out to the whole world Luke 14:15-21 Then Jesus said to one of the dinner guests, Someone gave a great dinner and invited many. At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, Come; for everything is ready now. But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my regrets. Another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my regrets. Another said, I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come. So the slave returned and reported this to his master.

Luke 14:22-24 Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. And the slave said, Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room. Then the master said to the slave, Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled.

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. Luke 15:1-2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. The lost sheep Luke 15:3-7 The lost coin Luke 15:8-10 The lost child is welcomed home Luke 15:11-32

The two sons Luke 15:11-32 All the tax collectors and sinners And the Pharisees and the scribes were were coming near to listen to him. grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable. The younger son The elder son 1. leaves his father and home 1. Comes in from the fields 2. loses everything 2. hears of celebration and is angry 3. sin takes him to the bottom change of mind 3. Father comes out to his son stubborn refusal 3. Father comes out to his son 3. Father tells him of his love 2. receives everything 2. father explains the celebration 1. They began to celebrate 1.?????

The Parable of the rich man and Lazarus : Luke 16:19-31 There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames. But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.

Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector: Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.

Inheriting eternal life : Luke 18:18-23 (see Mark 10:17-22) A certain ruler asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother. He replied, I have kept all these since my youth. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich.

Inheriting eternal life : Luke 18:24-30 (Mark 10:23-30) Jesus looked at him and said, How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel [κάμηλος ; hawser: κάμiλος] to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? He replied, What is impossible for mortals is possible for God. Then Peter said, Look, we have left our homes and followed you. And he said to them, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.

Luke 20:9-15 (see Mark 12:1-8) He began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went to another country for a long time. When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants in order that they might give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Next he sent another slave; that one also they beat and insulted and sent away empty-handed. And he sent still a third; this one also they wounded and threw out. Then the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; surely they will respect him. But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours. So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
