Specifically, the project addresses the relationship between modern theological discourse on Jesus as a saving figure and the maintenance of sacrificial systems. It does so by offering a critical reading of the work of René Girard, and through the use of this reading, a critique of the christologies of Karl Barth, Karl Rahner and Jürgen Moltmann In the United Methodist Church, the term Elder, a translation of the New Testament word, presbyter, was selected by John Wesley as the designation for ordained clergy and is equivalent to priest or ordained minister in other Protestant denominations such as the worldwide Anglican Communion or the Presbyterian Church (USA). It conveys authority within the United Methodist Church to preach and to celebrate the sacraments, including the celebrating of Holy Communion.
