A STUDY of THE HOLY SPIRIT prepared by: John Cripps 1997

Lesson One: The Nature of the Holy Spirit!!! But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you. (Jn.14:26) I. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON (Jn.6:13,14) A. By person we are referring to an existing individual. 1. He shall TEACH you all things. (Jn.14:26) 2. He shall BEAR WITNESS. (Jn.15:26) 3. He shall GUIDE you into all truth. (Jn.16:13) 4. The Spirit GIVES LIFE. (Gal.6:8) 5. He makes INTERCESSION for us. (Rom.8:26) 6. The Holy Spirit CONVICTS. (Jn.16:8) 7. The Holy Spirit SPEAKS. (Jn.16:13, I Tim.4:1) 8. The Spirit is TRUTH. (I Jn.5:7) 9. As the above chart shows the Holy Spirit is not the Son nor the Father but is separate as the personage, the Holy Spirit/Ghost. 10. The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead --- by this we mean that He is Deity, Divinity, the state of being God. a. There are three distinct and separate individualities in the Godhead. (1) Elohim the Hebrew word (God) is the plural of El or Eloah (2) Gen. 1: And God {Elohim} said, let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness. (3) Gen. 3: And the Lord God {Elohim} said... one of US (4) Gen. 11:7 --- Go, to let US go down and confound their language. b. Note: The words US and OUR are plural pronouns. They require a plural Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 2 of 31

ANTECEDENT. c. Thus the Hebrew word ELOHIM {God}, is plural indicating a plurality of persons in the Godhead. B. The Holy Spirit: Is Eternal - Hebrews 9:14 Is Invisible - Luke 24:39 Has a Mind -Romans 8:27 Knows things -1 Cor. 2:11 Able to Grieve - Eph. 4:30 THE HOLY SPIRIT Can be Vexed - Isa. 63:10 Comforts - John 14:16-17 Begets - James 1:18 Guides - John 16:13 Bears Witness -Rom. 8:16 Teaches - John 14:26 Hears - John 16:13 Speaks - 1 Tim. 4:2 Forbids - Acts 16:6-7 Searches - 1 Cor. 2:10 II. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE WORD A. The scriptures furnish the man of God COMPLETELY. (2 Tim.3:16,17) B. He that hath HEARD and LEARNED...cometh unto me. (Jn.6:45) C....these are written that ye might BELIEVE... (Jn.6:45) D. The Word ENLIGHTENS. (Ps.19:8) E. The Word makes wise unto SALVATION. (Ps.19:7) F. The Word is perfect, CONVERTING the soul. (Ps.19:7) G. The word SAVES. (Jn.17:17; Acts 11:14; I Pet.19:7) H. The soul is BEGOTTEN by the seed, which is the word of God. (I Pet.1:23) I. The word produces FAITH. (Rom.10:17) J. The Holy Spirit did His work PERFECTLY and COMPLETELY when he guided the Apostles into all truth. (Jn.16:13-16) K. Note chart below shows the work of the holy Spirit toward both the alien sinner as well as the saint. Each time we find an action performed by the Spirit we can likewise find that the same is accomplished by the Word of God. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND CONVERSION A. The gospel is THE power of God unto salvation. (Rom.1:16) B. The law of the Lord is PERFECT, converting the soul. (Ps.19:7) C. Everyone that hath HEARD and LEARNED of the Father cometh unto Christ. (Jn.6:44-45) D. "...for in Christ Jesus I BEGAT you through the gospel." (I Cor.4:15) E. "Of his own will he BROUGHT US FORTH by the word of truth..." (Jas.1:18) F. "Having been BEGOTTEN again...through the WORD OF GOD, which liveth and abideth" (I Pet.1:23) G. Faith comes by HEARING the word of God. (Rom.10;17) Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 4 of 31

H. The word of God is the SWORD of the spirit. (Eph.6:17) I. "Ye shall know the TRUTH and the truth shall make you free." (Jn.8:32) J. It is clear that the Holy Spirit always operates upon the heart of the sinner in conversion THROUGH THE TRUTH and the truth is the gospel. (I Pet.1:25) K. If the theory of the direct operation of the Holy Spirit separate and apart from the word of God were true, then, either all would be saved or God is a respecter of persons. (Acts 10:34)...THIS THEORY IS FALSE. IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SANCTIFICATION (This will be covered in a future lesson in greater detail.) A. The Holy Spirit dwells in CHRISTIANS. (I Cor.3:16; Rom.8:9) B. He was sent into our hearts. (Gal.4:6) C. He bears witness with our spirits. (Rom.8:16) D. He promised to dwell in us. (Rom.8:11) 1 Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 5 of 31

Lesson Two: THE WORK OF THE Holy Spirit Introduction: A. NOTE: Each must agree that the H.S. uses an implement to bring about His work. 1. Not all agree upon the implement that He Uses. 2. Eph. 6:17 says that the implement of the Spirit is the "sword" which is the "Word of God." B. It is our endeavor to show that the work of the H.S. is done thru the Word of God, and not in some mystical influence directly upon the individual. C. Since the H.S. is a member of the Godhead, one must acknowledge that He has a purpose and a work to perform. 1. Note the work that the Holy Spirit has done through out the Scriptures: In Creation - Gen. 1:2-3; Job 26:13; Psa. 104:30 In Revelation - 1 Peter 1:20; Acts 1:16; Matt. 10:9-10 John 14:25-26; 16:13; Eph. 3:3-6; 2 Peter 1:3; Rev. 22;18-19 In Inspiration - 2 Peter 1:21; 1 Cor. 2:9-13 THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT In Confirmation by Miracles - Luke 24:46-49; (Example of the Apostles) Acts 8:13-16; Mark 16:20; 1 Cor. 12:4-11; Hebrews 2:2-4 In Conversion - John 16:7-13; (James 1:21; Romans 1:16; 1 Cor. 4:15 - Example of Conversions); John 3:5; (Romans 8:14; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23; 1 Peter 1:12; 1 Cor. 15:2; John 15:3; Eph. 6:17) 2. The question that we want to examine is HOW DOES HE ACCOMPLISH HIS WORK? Body: II. ONE OF THE WORK'S OF THE SPIRIT IS THAT OF REVEALING THE MIND OF GOD - I COR. 2:10. A. He was to teach, remind, testify, guide, speak, show and glorify. 1. John 14:26 ; 15:26 ; 16: B. This was also the work of the H.S. in the O.T. The will of God was revealed by the verbalization of His commands by the prophets, which were directed by the H.S. 1. I Peter 1:9-12 ; II Peter 1:19-21 ; Eph. 3:1-5. C. This was in fulfillment of promises and the prophecy of O.T. 1. Joel's prophecy --- Joel 2: "Poured Out". 2. John's promise ---- Matt. 3: Christ's promise --- Lk. 24:49 ; Acts 1:1-8. D. The H.S. came on the day of Pentecost --- Acts 2:1-4, 16ff. 1. Gave the Apostles the power to speak in various tongues in order to confirm the Word of Truth --- cf. Heb. 2:1-4. E. The revelation of the H.S. was supernatural, verbal and final. 1. I Cor. 2:9-13. Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 6 of 31

a. These revelations are inspired of God --- II Tim. 3:16 ; Eph. 3:3-5. b. They are words given by the Spirit --- I Cor. 2:9-13; I Thess. 2:13. c. This final and complete revelation must not be altered, perverted or abused --- Jude 3 ; Gal 1:6-8 ; Rev. 22: This supernatural knowledge would cease when that which was perfect has come --- I Cor 13:8. a. That which is perfect has reference to the Word of God and not to Christ's second coming. b. NOTE: Christ is never referred to as "that" in scriptures, the second coming of Christ is always associated with "His" or "Him". c. Thirdly note that those things which are to abide after that which is perfect has come would no longer be needed if this was speaking of the second return of Christ: Faith --- one's faith would be realized at the 2nd. Coming of Christ. (1) Hope --- would no longer be needed for we shall see --- cf. Heb. 11:1.Love --- is the keeping of His commandments -- cf. John 14:15 ; I John 2:3-6. d. One must now realize that the way in which God speaks with us is not in some mystical supernatural way but by His Son -- Heb. 1:1-2. e. *See Chart Below --- HOW GOD SPEAKS TO US TODAY * III. THE SECOND WORK OF THE H.S. IS THAT OF CONVICTION --- Rom. 10:17. Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 7 of 31

A. The H.S. is to produce conviction in the hearts of those who are ready to listen -- John 16:8-11 ; cf vrs This conviction is three fold in nature: a. He is to convict of sin --- John 8:24 ; Rom. 3: b. He is to convict of righteousness -- Rom. 1:16-17 ; Titus 2: c. He is to convict of the judgment to come --- Acts 17:30-31 ; John 12: The conviction of the alien sinner is accomplished thru the Gospel. B. Conviction to the laws of God does not come thru any other means except through the revealed manifestations of God's Will, The Word of God. IV. THE THIRD WORK OF THE H.S. IS THAT OF CONVERSION --- JOHN 3:3-8 A. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. 1. The new birth is "of the Spirit" ; it is accomplished through the Word -- John 3:3-5 ; I Cor. 4:15 ; Jas. 1:18 ; Rom. 10:17 ; Mk. 16: Yet is also described as "by the Word of God" --- I Peter 1:23 a. The H.S. converts men, but he does it through the use of the sword, which is the Word of God --- Eph. 6:17. b. The word is "able to save us" and "purify us" --- James 1:21 ;I Peter 1:22. c. Notice we are "begotten" by the Gospel --- James 1:18 ; I Cor. 4: * See Chart --- WHAT DOES THE SPIRIT ACCOMPLISH see page 3 & 4 * B. Conversion is accomplished by the power of the Gospel --- Rom. 1:16-17 ;I Peter 1:12 ; Rom. 10:17 ; Acts 2:38,41, which the H.S. revealed unto us. 1. Everything that one needs to move people to accept Christ and to be saved is supplied by the revealed Word of God. 2. There is not a case of conversion recorded in the book of Acts or in the N.T. where the word of God was not manifested first --- cf I Peter 1: * See Chart ---- Cases of Conversion in Book of Acts * Preaching Believed Repented Confessed Baptized Saved Pentecost Acts 2:14-47 Repented vs. 38 Baptized vs. 38,41 Rem. of sins vs. 38,47 Samaria Acts 8:5-13 Believed vs. 12 Baptized vs Eunuch Acts 8:35-39 Believed vs Confessed vs. 37 Baptized vs. 38 Rejoiced vs. 39 Saul Acts 22:6-21 Baptized vs. 16 Sins Washed vs. 16 Cornelius Acts 10:34-48 Believed vs. 43 Baptized vs. 48 Rem. of sins vs. 43 Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 8 of 31

Convicted them of their sin --- vrs 37. b. Manifested to them the way of righteousness --- vrs * See Chart --- H.S. in Conviction and Conversion * THE HOLY SPIRIT S WORK IN CONVERSION John 3:5; 16:7-11 Conversion is Effected by the Holy Spirit Through The Word Of God Only Conversion Involves The Heart Matthew 13:15; 18:3; 7:13-14 Mark 2:8 --- Intellect Matthew 22: Emotions Romans 6: Will Belief --- Romans 10:10 Repentance Corinthians 7:10 Baptism --- Acts 10:48 Word of God --- The Sword of the Spirit Ephesians 6:17 1. THE FOURTH WORK OF THE H.S. IS ONE OF SANCTIFICATION - JOHN 17:17. A. H.S. calls God's people to sanctification --- I Peter 1:14-16 B. Power of spiritual development is contained in the word of God, rather than in some mystical influence upon the individual --- I Peter 2:1-2. VI. SPIRITUAl GIFTS, THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE EARLY CHURCH. (This will be covered in our Final and last lesson in this study. A. How was it given ---- Acts 8: Cannot be for today since their are no living apostles. B. For what was its purpose? --- Eph. 4:8-12 ; Mk. 16:16, Not for today since the Word is already confirmed --- Heb. 2:2-3. C. What was the Duration? --- I Cor. 13: Not for today since we have the perfect Word of God --- II Tim. 3: Conclusion: D. Since the Gospel is Revealed and the Will/Mind of God is manifested it no longer is a mystery unto us. E. The H.S. cannot enlighten today as some claim, for to say such is to deny the power of God and the power of the H.S. in saying he was not able to do it the first time when He gave it to the Apostles. F. The H.S. is active and working today in completing His work in Conviction, Conversion and Sanctification when the Gospel is preached, believed and obeyed. 11 Lesson Three: BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT I. SOME FACTS ABOUT HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM: A. Holy Spirit Baptism always a promise --- NEVER a Command. 1. Matt. 3: "He shall baptize you..." 2. Mk. 1:8 --- "He shall baptize you with the H.S." 3. Lk. 3: "He shall baptize you with the H.S." 4. John 1: ".. the same is He which... the H.S." 5. Acts 1:5 --- "... ye shall be baptized with the H.S." 6. Acts 11: "... ye shall be baptized with the H.S." 7. Jesus Christ is the administrator of H.S. baptism. 8. It was promised to some who either had, or could have received John's baptism. 9. The promise of the H.S. baptism was made only to some of John's generation! NOT unto You and Me! Holy Spirit BAPTISM 1. Element --- Spirit (Acts 1:5) 2. By --- CHRIST (John 1:33; Matthew 3:11) 3. A Promise --- Received (Luke 24:49; Acts 2:1-4) 4. Purpose --- To REVEAL and CONFIRM (John 16:13; Hebrews 2:3-4) 5. Not Raised In: (Acts 2:1-4) 6. Did Not Save: (Acts 2:1-4) 7. No Longer Needed (John 16:13; Hebrews 2:3-4) 8. Son Long as Salvation is Needed (Mark 16:16) 8. Unto the END of the World (Matthew 28:19-20) Adapted from Nichols - Weaver Debate B. Only Two Recorded Cases In The New Testament. 1. Consider "all flesh" of Joel 2:28 ; Acts 2: Jews (Apostles) on Pentecost --- Acts 2: Gentiles (Cornelius & Others) --- Acts 10:44-47 ; Acts 11: NOTE: It is not recorded that Paul received Baptism of the H.S. yet it is indicated by passages such as: a. Acts 9:17 b. II Cor. 11:5 Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 11 of 31

c. II Tim. 1:6 THESE ARE THE BASIC FACTS II. THE PURPOSE OF HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM. A. To GUIDE the Apostles into all truth --- John 14:26 ; 16:13. B. To CONFIRM the message preached --- Mark 16:20 ; Hebrews 2:3-4 C. Gentiles received H.S. baptism to ASSURE them and to CONVINCE the Jews that God was granting repentance unto life to the Gentiles also Acts 10:44-47 ; Acts 11: III. THERE IS ONLY ONE BAPTISM TODAY! A. At one time there were OTHER BAPTISMS. B. By the time of A.D. 64 Paul said in Ephesians that there was ONLY "ONE BAPTISM" --- Eph. 4:5. C. This "ONE BAPTISM" IS WATER BAPTISM. Consider: Matt. 28:19-20 ; Note in A.D. 64 Peter wrote --- I Peter 3: D. One CAN NOT HAVE BOTH HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM AND WATER BAPTISM --- and still have just "ONE BAPTISM" Scriptural Baptism Holy Spirit Baptism Pouring & Sprinkling Water Baptism - By Immersion Requires: A Willing Subject Requires: A Promised Willing Subject Requires: Both willing and Unwilling Subjects Requires a Willing and Believing Subject A Human Administrator - Matt. 28:19 A Human Administrator A Human Administrator Matthew 28:19 Water - Acts 8:36 Water Water - Acts 8:36 Much Water - John 3:23 Going Down Into the Water - Acts 8:38 The Likeness of a Birth - John 3:5 The Likeness of a Burial - Romans 6:4 The Likeness of a Resurrection - Col. 2:12 A Washing of the Body in Pure Water - Heb. 10:22 Much water - John 3:23 Going Down Into the Water - Acts 8:38 The Likeness of a Birth - John 3:5 The Likeness of a Burial - Romans 6:4 The Likeness of a Resurrection - Col. 2:12 The Washing of the Body in Pure water - Heb. 10:22 Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 12 of 31

NO HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM TODAY! A. There is no need for Holy Spirit Baptism Today! 1. We have "ALL THE TRUTH". --- James 1:25 ; II Tim. 3:16-17 ; II Peter 1:3 2. The "truth" (Gospel Message) has been CONFIRMED --- Mark 16:20 ; Heb. 2:3-4 ; Galatians 3: We are CONVINCED AND ACCEPT that the Gentiles are accepted by God --- Acts 15:7-9. B. There is NO EVIDENCE of H.S. baptism today. 1. No one today is healing the sick, casting out demons/devils, raising the dead, etc. BY GOD'S POWER. 2. After the Apostles received H.S. Baptism they never TRIED AND FAILED - so far as the record goes --- Acts 5: In the 1st. Cent. the N.T. WAS CONFIRMED/PROVEN BY "MIRACLES". Today some try to confirm/prove their "MIRACLES" BY THE NEW TESTAMENT. 4. There is not one person alive today who was of the generation of John, to whom H.S. baptism was promised. 15 Lesson Four: THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Introduction: A. Over the past couple of Sunday s we have been studying the subject of the Holy Spirit. 1. Lessons to date have included the Nature of the Holy Spirit, Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the Work of the Holy Spirit. B. In this lesson we want to focus our attention to another aspect of the Holy Spirit, one that many are confused about and do not understand, and that is the INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CHRISTIAN TODAY. 1. Much has been said on this subject and much has been written, however, our aim in this lesson is to examine the scriptures to see what God has to say concerning the indwelling of His Spirit. C. The ISSUE IS NOT: 1. Does the H.S. have a role in saving sinners --- Since scriptures says YES it does --- cf. Titus 3:5 ; Eph 1:13 etc. 2. Whether or not the H.S. dwells in the Christian today --- Since scriptures says Yes He does --- cf Rom. 8:9-11 ; I Cor. 3:16 ; 6:19 ; James 4:5 ; II Tim. 1:13-14 ; Eph 3:16 ; I Thess. 4:8. a. To deny such is to deny the Scriptures and the power unto salvation.--- Rom. 1:16 ; II Tim. 1: To deny the fact that the Christian is led, guided, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit is to deny the teachings of the Scriptures. 4. Whether or not the H.S. has been given to Christians --- Since Scriptures says He has --- Acts 5:32 ; Gal 4:6 ; Rom. 5:5 ; I John 3:24 ; 4:13. D. Rather the ISSUE IS HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELL??? 1. Does the Holy Spirit indwell the Christian today personally and literally in addition to the Word of God? 2. Does the Holy Spirit indwell the Christian today personally and literally separate and apart from the Word of God? 3. Does the Holy Spirit as a person immediately and without means enter into and inhabit the body of a Christian separate and apart from the influence of The Revealed Word? a. If So!, what does He do for the Christian as a result of this bodily indwelling that is not said to be accomplished through the medium of His teaching in the revealed Word? Body: II. THE DANGERS OF A FALSE ASSUMPTION. A. To assume that the "Holy Spirit dwells personally and literally in addition to the Word of God, is to assume too much and to tread in the very uncharted waters of denominationalism. 1. Let us note just a few uncharted waters of assumption readily accepted by many religious people today. a. Scriptures says Faith saves! -- Mans Assumption: FAITH ONLY. b. Scriptures says Benevolence - James 1:27 -- Mans Assumption: CHURCH ACTION: (1) Yet note: --- Churches are not mentioned. Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 15 of 31

(2) It is not mentioned that we may send a Contribution. (3) It is not mentioned that we may send to "orphans Homes". c. Galatians 6: Mans Assumption that this is CHURCH ACTION TO EACH AND EVERYONE WHO IS IN NEED. (1) Yet note the Context of this Scripture is written to the individual Christian and not to the Church as a whole. d. Scriptures say a 1000 years - Rev. 20: Mans Assumption: LITERAL THOUSAND YEAR REIGN OF CHRIST ON EARTH. (1) Once again Note : Reign on earth is not mentioned. (2) Physical throne of David in Not mentioned. (3) 2nd. Coming of Christ is not mentioned. e. Scriptures teach Baptism - much water, a burial etc. -- Mans Assumption: SPRINKLING, POURING IS THE SAME. 2. Many more can be noted but the point is well established by these few examples. B. Many brethren assume the direct, personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 1. It is interesting to note that the very arguments given to support this teaching are the same ones that are that are used by CALVINISTS AND PENTECOSTALISM today. 2. "Before we make claims about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which would not parallel the indwelling of both the Father and the Son, we need to examine closely what is actually involved" Robert Harkrider p. 21. C. Let us note some primary verses that are often overlooked and ignored by the teaching of the Personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 1. We Dwell in the Holy Spirit --- Gal. 5:16, There is also the INDWELLING IN: a. Sin --- Romans 7:17. b. Love --- I John 3:17. c. Word of God --- Col. 3:16. d. Truth --- John 15:7 ; I John 2:14 ; II John 2 ; III John 3 ; II Tim. 1:5. (1) Note we abide in Truth also --- John 8:31 ; I Cor. 15:1 ; II John 4 ; II John 4. D. The fact that must be respected here is that whatever one claims of one he must also claim of all the others. 1. Does the dwelling here refer to a personal, literal indwelling? a. The answer is simply NO!!! Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 16 of 31

2. The indwelling noted in all the above scriptures are a symbolic figure of speech showing a close fellowship with that which greatly influences men's lives. 3. Note this Illustration to show the point: a. We often hear the statement that "I Can see his Father in Him". What is ordinarily meant here is that one is able to see the influence or semblance of his Father because of similar actions or attitudes. b. What is not meant is that his Father is personally seen by the on looker. E. Thus the only conclusion that one must draw from such study, is the fact that the word "DWELL" DOES NOT NECESSITATE A LITERAL INDWELLING OF THE PERSON. F. Another problem that is quickly overlooked is the subject of INCARNATION: 1. Simply stated this is when Deity personally and literally dwells in the flesh ---- Col 2:9 ; I Tim. 3:16 ; John 1:1, If Deity dwells in our flesh, literally and personally, how is our flesh any different from that of Christ??? 3. Naturally one must concluded that such a conclusion would promote and elevate man to a place which he does not occupy!!! G. It is natural to see why it is so important to understand the difference between the presence of God and the Personage of God. III. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PERSONAGE AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD. A. Firstly we must all agree that the H.S. is a "Person" of Divine Nature. 1. The H.S. is a member of the Godhead. a. Three were present at the beginning --- Gen. 1;1-2. b. This plurality is seen in the word "our" in Gen 1:26 cf. John 1: Father, Son and the H.S. are all persons of the Godhead. a. Baptism is administered in the name of all three --- Matt 28: b. Peter preached about all three --- Acts 10:38. c. Paul wrote about all three --- Eph.2:13,18 ; Rom 15:30 ; II Cor. 13: They are three persons but are One in agreement, purpose and action: a. I John 5:7. B. Secondly we must acknowledge the fact that the H.S. is God but not the Son nor the Father: 1. I John 4: Father is not the Son. 2. John 15: Son not the H.S. and the Father not the H.S. C. "Since each are persons they require individuality, which in turn requires locality which necessitates separation and distinction". --- Robert Harkrider pg. 22. D. Let us now note where Deity is placed according to the scriptures: 1. God the Father is seated as a Divine Person on His throne in Heaven -- Rev. 4:3-4 ; 7: Jesus Christ as God's Son, as a Divine Person is seated at the right hand of the Majesty on High --- Heb. 1:3 ; 8:1 ; 12:2. 3. The Holy Spirit, as a Divine Person is standing before the throne of God --- Rev. 1:4 ; 4:5. E. With this in mind that the fact still remains that God the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit is said to dwell in us. Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 17 of 31

1. To interpret this literally and personally, one would have to say that God has left Heaven and has been incarnated into all believers and therefore vacating heaven. F. I believe that the only way to fully understand the "Dwelling" that is taking place in the lives of Christians today is to understand the difference between the "person" and the "presence" of God. 1. The "presence of God" is found in many places in scripture, where "His Person" is not. a. Although the presence of God may be found in different places His Divine Being is in Heaven. b. This is accomplished through the use of various agents or mediums. 2. Let us note some examples of God's Presence but not His Person: a. God called unto Moses in the midst of a burning bush --- Exo 3:4. (1) Yet this was done through an angel --- vrs. 2. b. The Lord saved the Israelites out of the Hand of the Egyptians - Ex. 14:30. (1) Once again it was accomplished through the angel of His presence ---- Isa. 63:9. c. The Lord went before Israel in a pillar of Cloud and fire --Ex. 13:21. (1) Once again the angel of God actually did this --- Ex. 14:19 ; 33:14 ; 23: Christ promised to be with His Disciples when they gather in His name: a. Matt 18:20. b. Yet we understand that Christ is at the Right Hand of God -- Heb. 4:14-16 ; I Peter 3:22. G. The question that one needs to ask is IF GOD AND THE SON CAN BE PRESENT THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTALITY OF THEIR AGENTS WITHOUT BEING PRESENT IN PERSON, WHY CANNOT THE HOLY SPIRIT ALSO BE? 1. To many times we are inclined to attribute things to the H.S. when in fact it is God doing it thru the angel of His presence ministering unto "heirs of the kingdom". a. Providential blessings --- cf. Heb. 1:14. IV. AVOIDING THE SUPERNATURAL ACTION OF THE H.S. TODAY. A. Brethren are quickly able to point out that they do not believe that the H.S. is working supernaturally and miraculously today in them, but rather affirm that the H.S. is working Directly Non-miraculously. 1. There is no Example of the H.S. working directly (apart from the Word) without supernatural results! 2. When the H.S. acted apart from the Word of God, it was always Supernaturally. B. The reasons for avoiding Supernatural action is because of the basic consequences of having to follow only two direct courses. 1. CALVINISM: a. "man is unable to do good without the supernatural help provided by the direct indwelling of the H.S. 2. WHY PERSONAL INDWELLING??? a. To Enable man to understand the Scripture --- Art. 1 # 6. b. To make him willing (able) to believe ---- Art. 7 # 3. c. To enable him to resist sin --- Art. 15 # 2-3. d. To make him conscious of his sins --- Art. 15 # 3. From Westminster Conf. of Faith. THE BIBLE The Bible is Always Right, Regardless of What Is Taught To The Contrary The Bible Says Concerning the Holy Spirit: 1. A Promise to a FEW - (Matt. 3:11; Luke 24:47; Acts 1:5) 2. Was for a Specific Purpose: a. Guide the Apostles into all truth - (John 14:26). b. Declare things to come - (John 16:13) c. To convict the World - (John 16:7-11) d. Bear Witness - (John 15:26-27) Evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: 1. Cloven tongues sat upon them like as of fire - Acts 2:3. There was visible Proof. 2. Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as a rushing mighty wind (Acts 2:2). There was proof by the activity in the area; i.e., the sound. C O M P A R E THE ASSEMBLIES OF GOD Excerpt From A Publication By: Gospel Publishing House Springfield Missouri, pg. 19 Articles # 7 & # 8 # 7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit. We believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is granted to all believers who ask for it. We further believe this experience is distinct from and follows the new birth, that it was the normal experience of New Testament Christians, and that it brings an endowment of power for Christians living and service (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4, 8; 2:4; 10:44-46; 15:8-9). # 8. - The Evidence of Baptism of the Holy Spirit. We believe the baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives utterance. This speaking in tongues is the same essence as the gift of tongues but is different in its purpose and use, (Acts 2:4; 1 Cor. 12:4-10, 28). Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 19 of 31

Cornelius Was a Special Case Also - (Acts 10:44-46). That the Jews would not reject them. (Acts 11:1-18). Note: These two points are the most important of all to the Assemblies of God and their false teaching on other subjects. Notice the contrast in the Bible s teaching on this particular subject. The scriptures they have used have been constantly perverted by them. They try to make the scriptures mean something other than what they clearly do mean. Headquarters in Springfield, Missouri. Chart Adapted from Preceptor Magazine C. By implication this asserts that MAN CANNOT DO THESE THINGS WITHOUT A PERSONAL INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. D. Notice what has been said by brethren who contend for the personal direct operation of the H.S. "Indwelling --- provides a motive to keep our spirits and bodies clean, enables us to keep the faith, brings comfort, aids in our worship, brings renewal; ect..." 1. The Bible is the all sufficient rule of faith and practice, but that perfect rule of faith says the Spirit does something in addition to the Word for us. (Ben Bogart - Baptist Debater). a. The Word furnishes the Christian perfectly unto every good work. But one of the chief things the Word furnishes is the knowledge of the indwelling Spirit. (J.D. Thomas - a Christian in defense of direct indwelling of the Holy Spirit). 2. Has he (the Holy Spirit) written a book that we call the Bible? From that time on just sits back and does nothing but looks on with interest? (Ben. M. Bogard) a. The real question is whether God still personally works in the hearts of men; or whether he has done all the work, written it down for us in a Book, and retired personally from the scene of action. (J.D. Thomas). 3. The necessity of prayer in behalf of sinner and in behalf of the minister, proves there is something mor than the word necessary. (Ben M. Bogard) a. Can we ask God to be with a preacher as he proclaims the Word? And then can we expect God to help that preacher in any sense whatsoever except as he remembers and is guided by Scripture? (All questions of Bogard and J.D. Thomas are taken from The Holy Spirit, His Person and Work, by Jimmy Tuten, Jr., p. 29.) E. The logical conclusion that must be drawn from this is the fact that: 1. There no longer is a need to teach Christians, since the H.S. has control. 2. No need to be concerned about Apostasy. 3. If Apostasy does occur, then God is held responsible. 4. Makes man passive about his salvation. Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 20 of 31

5. Changes the source of authority: a. Feel that the H.S. wants me to do this. b. H.S. will teach me how to understand the Bible etc. 6. The Word of God is not "all Sufficient". Conclusion: F. Certainly the dangers of accepting this doctrine and assuming that it is correct is destructive in and of itself. G. Let us learn what the Spirits wants us to believe by the Word. H. Let us not add to the Word. I. Let us study, Preach and live the Word of God in our every day lives. (Note the article below) How does the Holy Spirit dwell in the Christian? By - John Cripps Reply: I am firmly convinced that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the Christian is the "Gift of the Holy Spirit" in Acts 2:38. The indwelling of the Spirit is spoken of in many places in the New Testament..(Acts 5:32 ; Gal 4:6 ; I Thess 4:8 ; I Cor 3:16 ; Eph 1:13 ; Rom 8:9-11, ect.) How the Spirit dwells in the Christian is difficult to explain. We cannot explain how our Spirits dwell in us, much less the Holy Spirit. But our inability to explain how He dwells in us does not obviate the fact that He does. The Bible is not very explicit on HOW the Holy Spirit dwells in the Christian. There are many theories, but none of then is completely satisfactory. I believe He dwells in the Christian through the medium of the Word which He communicated to us...(jn. 16:13), but the Word and the Spirit are not the same-- not identical. Jesus said, "...the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life".jn.6:63. The Word is the Spirit's agent, but there is always a distinction between an agent and that which employs it. Making this distinction is one thing, explaining it so people can understand it is something else! If, as some claim, the Spirit and the Word are the same, there would only be two members of the God Head. The indwelling of the Spirit is spoken of in various ways in the New Testament. It is called the "communion" or "fellowship" with the Spirit.-..II Cor 13:14 ; Phil. 2:1. It is the Spirit's witness which He bears with our spirit which we have received...rom 8:23. It is the "intercession" which the Spirit makes in our behalf...rom 8:26. It is the help HE gives our infirmities...rom 8:26. It is the leading which the Spirit gives us...eph. 2:18. It is the strength which the Spirit gives our " Inner man"...eph. 3:16. This is specifically what is the indwelling of the Spirit. The evidence of the indwelling of the Spirit is Fruit. Jesus said that the tree is known by its fruit...- Mt.7: Hence the indwelling of the Spirit is something concrete, capable of being witnessed by its recipient as well as by others. The fruit of the Spirit is : "Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, temperance...gal 5:22,23. Thus, the indwelling of the Spirit is not mystical, better felt than told something, but is witnessed by its fruits. It rests upon firmer ground than subjective emotionalism, or mere human testimony. The Indwelling of the Spirit is both subjective and objective. That is, the person who is indwelt by the Spirit is aware of this blessing. He comes as "seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 21 of 31

Lord."..Acts 3:19. From the stand point of others (objectively) the indwelling of the Spirit comes as "Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, meekness, and temperance...gal 5:22,23. These are the fruits that others can observe and thereby know that we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, rather than having to rely upon some unfounded and unprovable claim. It is noteworthy that all of these fruits are a direct result of obedience to the Word of God. THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT by W.A.Bradfield HOW DOES THE SPIRIT DWELL IN US? 1. GOD dwells in us. (2 Cor.6:16; Col.3:16; I Jn.4:15) 2. CHRIST dwells in us. (Eph.3:17; Col.3:16) 3. Both dwell in us THROUGH the word. (2 Jn.9; Gal.3:2) 4. Neither dwells in us personally. God is in heaven and Christ is at the right hand of God. (Acts 2:33) 5. The Holy Spirit through the Word represents God and Christ on earth. (Matt.10:40; Lk.10:16; I Thess.2:13) 6. When the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians, God and Christ dwell in them also. (I Cor.3:16,17; Jas.4:5) 7. The Spirit speaks through the written word. (Rev.2:1,29) 8. The FATHER, the SON and the HOLY SPIRIT, ALL, dwell in the people of God. (Eph.2:20-22) 9. God, Christ and the Holy Spirit dwell in us through the word. (Jn.16:13-15; 2 Pet.1:3; 2 Tim.3:16) 10. The Holy Spirit dwells in Christians in exactly the same way that the Father and the Son dwell in them - that is, THROUGH THE WORD. (Rom.8:11; Gal.2:20; Eph.3:17; Col.1:27; 2 Cor.6:16) ONE IS NO MORE MIRACULOUS NOR MYSTERIOUS THAN THE OTHERS. THE INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, and the theory that the Spirit operates independently of the Word is erroneous. (Eph.6:17) The Spirit does not CONVICT, or GUIDE, or REVEAL, or DWELL IN, or OPERATE in any way, except THROUGH THE WORD. (Eph.5:18,19; Col.3:16) The indwelling FATHER, SON, and SPIRIT, all three, dwell in the same PLACE. (Eph.2:20-22; 2 Jn.9) They all dwell in the HEART where the word of Christ dwells richly. 23 Lesson Five: ACTS 2:38b. --- "Gift of the H.S." Introduction: A. "What is the Gift of the H.S.?"in vrs This particular subject has been the concern for many though out the ages and there are several ideas that stem from this scripture. a. The gift of the H.S. is the personal literal indwelling of the H.S. in the lives of children of God today. (1) This position has already been shown to be false in our study of the indwelling of the H.S. (2) This position is also the basis of Pentecostalism and Calvinistic thought. b. The gift of the Holy Spirit is the H.S. itself, yet the actual function of the H.S. given to Christians is not clearly defined. c. And thirdly: The gift of the Holy Spirit is a gift given by the H.S. and not the actual H.S. itself. 2. These three thoughts concerning the passage at stake are the schools of thought amongst both conservative scholars as well as liberal scholars of the Scriptures. B. Having already shown the error of the Pentecostal and Calvinistic viewpoints our attention will center on the remaindering thoughts. 1. This is not a fellowship question, however, once our thought goes beyond into the area of miraculous activity in this day and time one is not heeding the scriptures and therefore is a subject of discipline and action on behalf of the congregation in fellowship. Body: II. "LOOKING TO THE CONTEXT/GRAMMATICALLY FOR THE ANSWER." A. Firstly what we need to do is see what the text DOES SAY and what the text DOES NOT SAY. 1. The context of the text begins with vrs 37. a. Those that were pricked in their hearts ask a question. b. "What shall we do?" c. The object of the question was to find out and to learn what they needed to do and not what benefits they would gain from the decision. 2. In vrs 38 the H.S. responds, through Peter by saying: a. "Repent and Be Baptized," (1) Notice the command extended to all --- "to every one of you". (2) OBEDIENCE TO THE COMMAND MUST BE BY THE "AUTHORITY OF JESUS CHRIST" (3) The purpose or the design of the action is: (a) "for (eis, unto, in order to) the remission of sins" (4) The clause "Ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit", declares the blessing promised to those that obey. 3. Notice the fact that the passage says that those that obey and fulfill the stipulations of the conditions laid down, "shall receive the gift of the H.S." Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 23 of 31

a. The passage does not say --- "ye shall receive the gift of the H.S. as a person to dwell directly, immediately and without means or instrumentality in your physical bodies" --- Franklin T. Puckett p. 12. b. This is not what it says and to accept that this is what it teaches is to assume a position without substantial support from other clearer defined scriptures. B. Grammatically the "gift of the H.S." in vrs 38.can be either the Holy Spirit Himself or it may be that which the Holy Spirit gives. 1. It is important to note that the Grammar does not point out or determine whether the Holy Spirit is the gift or the giver. a. Many have labored trying to prove the Greek text {tou hagiou pneumatos} to be Possessive Genitive while others have tried to prove Objective Genitive or Appositional Genitive. b. The fact remains that the Greek grammatical structure does not reveal the kind of Genitive involved. 2. This established and according to Greek Lexical authorities, "the precise meaning of the Genitive case in this and other similar passages must be determined on the basis of doctrinal truth, and that these are to be carefully deduced from an accurate comparison of parallel passages" {Winer, Grammar of the N.T. Diction, Pt Sec 30 page 199 as quoted by Franklin Pucket p. 14.} C. Let us examine the scriptures for other comparative passages where the same grammatical form is used and found: 1. John 4: "The gift of God" 2. Eph. 4: "The gift of Christ" 3. In these two passages the Genitive (God and Christ) is clearly the giver of the gift. D. This still does not clarify whether Acts 2:38 is the giver or the gift, or whether the passage is to be understood literally or metaphorically. III. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE GIVER OF GIFTS. A. While in some passages the Holy Spirit is the gift given ---- John 7:39 ; Acts 10:44,45 ; 11:15-17 ; other scriptures clearly the Holy Spirit is the giver of gifts --- I Cor. 12:4 ; Heb. 2:4. 1. NOTE WELL: When scripture speaks of the H.S. as the gift, the reference needs always to be noted that it may not be with reference to the Divine Being Himself, but rather speaking in metonymy to the operations and effects produced by the H.S. a. Pucket on this point notes the following principle: "IN such cases; these operations and effects, together with the Holy Spirit who produce them, are considered as a gift bestowed from God." 2. When the scriptures speak of the H.S. as the giver of the gift, the reference is to the identity of the Divine being who produced the operations and effects. 3. One must note the emphasis of these scriptures: a. In the first emphasis is placed on the effects produced. b. In the second emphasis is placed on the producer of the effects. 25 Lesson Six: SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT Introduction: A. As we continue our study we need to note that there is more than just one sin that is committed against the Holy Spirit: SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT Blaspheme - Matthew 12:31-32 Lie To - Acts 5:1-6 Willful Disobedience - Hebrews 10:26-29 Grieve - Eph. 4:30 All Sins - Acts 7:51; Neh. 9:30; Eph. 3:3-6; Acts 1:16 B. Since many of these sins are simply understood by the text, it is our intention to spend some time studying one of the sins in particular, the BLASPHEMY of THE HOLY SPIRIT. BLASPHEMY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ( By David J.Riggs) Introduction: A. Text: Matthew 12:22-32; Mark 3: B. This is a confusing topic to many... some live in dread that they may have committed this sin. C. And, the consequences are certainly serious (cf. Matt. 12:31-32; Mk. 3:29). II. WHAT THIS SIN IS NOT! A. Murder. 1. For some interesting views on this, see the Mormon -Doctrine &Covenants, section 132) a. Whatever this sin is, it has no forgiveness. 2. Murder can be forgiven (cf. Acts 2:22-23, 36-38; 26:10). B. Suicide. 1. True, such a one would die without forgiveness, assuming he/she was rational. 2. However, a drunk, drug addict, etc., would die in the same condition (i.e., unforgiven). 3. Suicide is in the same class as those mentioned in 2 Thess. 1:7-9. C. Denying Christ. 1. This is the most often mentioned when discussing this sin. 2. Matthew 12:32 distinguishes this sin from blasphemy against the H.S. 3. Compare Matthew 27:44 with Luke 23: D. Denying the Word of God (we will discuss this in more detail later). III. WHAT IS "BLASPHEMY?" A. Defined by Christ (Matt. 12:31-32). 1. Literally "to speak against." 2. "Contemptuous speech" (Vine). Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 25 of 31

B. The word is generally used in reference to deity, speaking against deity. 1. In this sense, you cannot "blaspheme" a person - the word describes belittling or mocking deity. 2. It also means to reduce deity to a human level (Matt. 26:63-66; John 10:33). IV. EXAMINATION OF THE CONTEXT. A. Jesus was performing miracles. 1. Pharisees charged that He did this by "Beelzebub." 2. A similar charge had already been made (cf. Matt. 9:32-34; 10:25; 11:18). 3. Jesus' reply -- Matt. 12: a. This offered proof that demons did exist, and that they still served Satan. b. Demons were there for a purpose (Matt. 8:29). B. Pharisees could not deny that a miracle was performed. 1. They offered no refutation. 2. Jesus was basing His claim to deity on the performance of the miracles (John 14:11; 3:2). 3. Pharisees refused to believe the signs (John 11:47-48). C. Pharisees had to discredit the miracles in some way. 1. Accused Jesus of being a vile sinner (John 9:16-24). a. Jesus answered this charge (John 8:46). b. This sin could still be forgiven (Matt. 12:32). 2. Then, they attributed Jesus' power to Satan. a. They could not deny the miracles. b. Thus, they belittle deity - in this case specifically, the Holy Spirit (see Matt. 12:24). c. See also Mark 3: the "because" in v. 30 is the reason for Jesus' statement. 3. This, then, is the sin of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit! a. Being eyewitnesses of the miracles. b. Attributing them to Satan. V. CAN WE BE GUILTY OF THIS SIN TODAY? A. NO! 1. We are NOT eyewitnesses of the miracles. a. They are passed down to us through the written record (John 20:30-31). b. We have their TESTIMONY. B. "But what if I say that the Bible is false? Am I not speaking against the Holy Spirit?" 1. "Blasphemy" and "blasphemy against the H.S." are two different things (cf. Titus 2:5). 2. Rejecting Jesus, disbelief, etc., were sins that could be forgiven (Matt. 12:32; John 10:37-38). 3. The Jews and Paul denied Christ - yet many Jews were converted, and of course, so was Paul (Acts 26:9; 1 Tim. 1:13; Rom. 11:23). 4. The difference is between those who were "eye-witnesses" of the miracles, and those who either believe or reject the "testimony" about those miracles. a. Same reason we cannot have living apostles today (Acts 1:22). Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 26 of 31

b. Only those who saw the miracles performed could be guilty of the sin of "blasphemy against the H.S." Conclusion: C. Blasphemy against the H.S. was certainly a terrible sin! D. However, the man today who dies outside the body of Christ is no better off than those Pharisees! E. Why not accept the Biblical testimony -- and confess that Christ is the Son of God, just as He claimed? 1. Matt. 12: #1. What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? (Matt. 12) 2. A careful study of this passage in its context will clearly show what the "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is. a. Jesus had just healed a man blind and dumb. Such miracles were God-given credentials that Jesus was sent of God. Miracles could not be performed by one "except God be with him" (John 3:2; see Jno.20:30-31; Mk.16:20). b. These Jews felt the force of this miraculous proof. But their intent was to somehow discredit Jesus. To discredit Jesus they either had to deny the miracle he performed, which they could not do, or else attribute His power to Satan, knowing well that the Holy Spirit was with Him (John 3:34). They chose to lie and deliberately call the Spirit unclean. They blasphemed the Spirit. Mark specifies, "because they said, He hath an unclean spirit" (3:30). Their blasphemy consisted in saying that Jesus worked miracles by the power of the devil. c. By knowingly and wilfully ascribing the work of the Spirit to the devil, they rejected the final evidence by which he might believe and have eternal life. 3. Can one be guilty of this sin today? a. The blasphemy against the H.S. consisted of witnessing a miracle Jesus performed through the power of the Holy Spirit, and deliberately blaspheming by crediting the devil with the miracle, to discredit Christ. b. This situation does not now exist. One cannot do what they did. 4. However, it is possible to sin against the Spirit in other ways. a. May resist the Spirit (Acts 7:51-53) b. Christians may grieve the Spirit (Eph.4:30) Studies on the Holy Spirit - Page 27 of 31
