Dear Parents, Lent is often referred to as a journey one that begins in the dessert and ends in the garden. Each Sunday of Lent draws us closer to the great high point of the liturgical year the celebration of the Tridium and immersion into the Passion, death and the Resurrection of Jesus. Our Chapel is set up once again with the Stations of the Cross so that our students can reflect and learn about the importance of Easter. We are giving our students this opportunity to focus less on giving up and more on giving of themselves. This Lenten season we have framed the three traditional practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to offer everyone a precious opportunity to encounter Christ as we make our way towards Easter. We will celebrate Easter as a school community on April 3 rd at 1:30 p.m.. We invite our parent community to join us for this celebration. Parent/Student/ Teacher interviews and Demonstration of Learning sessions were held on Thursday, March 15 th. We want to thank all parents that were able to join us to celebrate your child s successes during the year. The school hosted a Scholastic Book Fair from March 12 th -15 th. The money that we raised during the book fair will be used to support our school wide literacy program. We are pleased to announce that we have booked a venue to host our Spring Concert on April 24 th. All grade 1-5 students will perform together on one evening. The concert will take place at the West Meadows Baptist Church ( Street) starting at 7:00 p.m. So, mark your calendars! Thank you to all the students that came to try out for the badminton team. Enrollment for Our enrollment has increased for the upcoming year. St. John XXIII is currently at a 97% utilization rate and we are expecting 100 more students for the next school year. We are hopeful that the province will provide 2 more modular classrooms for the school, however, even with these new classrooms, the school will require the classroom space that the child care program currently occupies for the school year. As a result, the YMCA child care service will not be offered at St. John XXIII next year. We wish to thank the YMCA for their outstanding service to our community for the past two years. The school has worked closely with two local businesses to ensure your child care needs are taken care of for the school year. The Windermere Out of School Care, located across the street from the school, will continue to service existing St. John XXII students for before and after school care as well as half day kindergarten. Please contact their director, Punnu by phone at or by at to retain your spot or to become a new client. The school would like to thank the Windermere Out of School Care for expanding their capacity to provide this valuable service to the families of the St. John XXIII community. The Windermere Early Learning Centre also provides half-day kindergarten child care spots for St. John XXIII students who ride the yellow bus. You can contact them via at info@welcentre.com or view their web site at for more information. 6 Pep Rally and Parade of Champions On Wednesday March 14 th, St. John XXIII held its first pep rally for our teams that were advancing to the finals. Our Senior Girls basketball team advanced to the City Final championship and to get everyone involved we held a Pep Rally to promote school pride. Students were asked to wear their St. John pridewear, some classes made cards, basketball posters, banners and personalized basketball good luck cards. It was a great opportunity for the entire school community to participate and motivate the team before the final game on Thursday March 15 th. In addition, we highlighted our elementary Indoor games running team. As you know, we had one boys and one girls team advance to the quarter finals on Saturday March 16 th. Our girls team placed 44 th overall in the standings and the boys placed 3 rd overall winning a bronze medal. Senior Girls basketball won the City Championship against Our Lady of Mount Carmel becoming the first team in St. John XXIII history to win a championship! We celebrated our finalists on Monday March 19 th with a parade of champions in the morning. All the students and staff were in the hallways as the winning teams high fived and cheered them on. This has been a great month to demonstrate school spirit.!! Thank you to everyone for all their support! Rabbit Hill Our entire student population from grade 4-9 had a fantastic time skiing at Rabbit Hill this year. As this is a yearly activity and part of the physical education curriculum the students really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in skiing or snowboarding. The weather was very cooperative with a lot of snow, creating ideal skiing conditions for the day. Counsellor s Corner The return from a (hopefully) relaxing Spring Break brings the final push to the end of the year. This can be a stressful time as teachers work to finish off the curriculum and students work on final projects and prepare for exams. One of the keys to reducing this stress is organization. Here are a few ways parents can help their child:
- Help students start collecting all the material they will need for review (past notes, tests, review guides). If the child is missing anything, encourage them to speak with their teacher to see if they can get a copy. - Use a calendar to help students keep track of all upcoming assignments, tests and projects. They may feel overwhelmed with the various due dates, but seeing it laid out in calendar (paper or electronic) can help them learn to prioritize their time. - Encourage students to review early! If there is a final exam, the sooner the student begins to review material (especially from September!) the better. Even taking minutes at night to look over a past concept can help students to feel more confident in their knowledge and understanding. - Ensure your child is checking their Google Classroom everyday, as there is important information posted by teachers. Resources, due dates and announcements are all available here. - Finally, remember balance is important. Studying and reviewing is very important to academic success, but so is the opportunity to release stress. Going for walks, hanging out with friends or doing extra curricular activities provide a good way of dealing with the pressures of the end of the year. If you have any questions or concerns, please me at Kristopher.Christianson@ecsd.net. Welcome Dr. Lucio Gelmini Dr. Lucio Gelmini is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Grant MacEwan. He visits school sharing his love and passion for the sciences with students. We were very fortunate to have experienced his Chemistry in the classroom showcase, demonstrating how chemistry impacts our everyday life. The students were amazed and excited with all the fun activities and experiments while highlighting the relevance of science to everyday life. His presentations are voluntary, and all donations made staff, students and the school are given to the Cross Cancer Institute. Thank you Chaplain News It is the beginning of a new season of grace and a time of joy and thanksgiving, for Easter is not just one day or one solemnity. The season of Easter lasts for seven weeks, ending with Pentecost. So even after Easter Sunday has passed, keep on celebrating and wishing your loved ones a happy Easter. For Christ has destroyed death, and now is the "feast of faith." We will be having our Easter celebration on Tuesday, April 3 at 1:30pm. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend.
French Immersion News Our students in the French Immersion program from Kindergarten to grade 7 will be attending mass at St. Joachim Parish (French) Église Saint-Joachim d Edmonton. This parish has a rich French history and the students will be attending a French mass on May 11 th at 9:00 with Père Felix. The month of May is dedicated as the month of Mary and we invite parents to attend the mass. The address is as follows Street Parents and caregivers with children in the French Immersion program are often wondering how they can bring the French language into their homes when they do not speak the language themselves. One of the best ways to learn a second language is to make sure that a child has a strong first language. This can be done by reading to and with your child daily and interacting with your child in their first language. There are many YouTube channels dedicated to French content, especially for the younger learners. There are also websites like TFO and Radio Canada Jeunesse. There is also the option of changing the language setting on your child s favourite DVD s. Many have the option to be viewed in French. You can also turn on captions, so your child can both read and listen to their video in their second language. For French music, again, there are many YouTube channels that are always an option. For the younger students, artists such as Matt Maxwell, Carmen Campagne, Charlotte Diamond are all great for building a child s vocabulary. Another experience could be learning to French Canadian Dance. All classes are in French but if your child can follow basic commands, they can give it a try ( Books can be hard to find but there are a few places you can try. First, you can try any Edmonton Public Library. They often have a French section. Another place you may not think to look at places like Goodwill and Value Village. Some Chapter s locations have a small French section. There is also the bookstore Le Carrefour that is located on the U of A s Campus Saint Jean. Of course, there are the Scholastic book orders or Book fairs that are announced with flyers that are sent home with your child. For many more ideas, here are some other links that might interest you: Our Grade 5 and 8 students in French Immersion will have the opportunity take their DELF exams this month. DELF is an evaluation of second-language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The DELF certifies a student s ability to communicate in French in real-life situations and is recognized internationally for life. The Grade 5 students will do the A1 level while the Grade 8 students will do the A2 level. In Grade 12, the students are offered the opportunity to take the B2 level. For more information, you are invited to visit the Canadian Parents for French Ontario website : Good luck to all our Grade 5 and Grade 8 students! Félicitations pour votre travail acharné!
Band News Our Graded 6-9 students participated in the Alberta International Music Festival at the Arts Barn. Students from grade 6-9 students including the tour band experienced the playing in a festival. They were being evaluated by adjudicators and then went through a workshop to improve their skills with the instruments individually and as musical group. We want to thank all the students that participated and are thankful to have had this opportunity for our students to experience a music festival. Thanks to our teachers Mrs. Scott and Ms. Barnett for attending. Reading at St. John XXIII
STAY ALERT April 2018 Steps to Building Healthy Relationships For Teens The importance of having healthy relationships in our lives cannot be understated. When we are in a healthy relationship we experience happiness and it allows us to grow emotionally and spiritually. Unhealthy relationships cause unhappiness and contribute to dysfunction, stress and poor mental health. Healthy relationships require these key ingredients: 1. Communication There must be open communication, listening more than talking. This allows us to convey our feelings and what our needs and wants are. 2. Equality Equal balance of power. Both persons in the relationship treat each other as equals and expect to be treated this way. 3. Self-Esteem - Before we enter a healthy relationship, we have to ensure that we love ourselves and that we have positive self-esteem. Once we accept who we are, and we realize our imperfections, it allows another person to love us in the same way. Having a good base in a relationship is extremely important. Decide what your personal boundaries are, physically, emotionally and mentally. Treat others as you expect to be treated. Do not compromise your standards; it is okay to say no. A healthy relationships ebbs and flows. If you have been hurt, do not be afraid to ask for help. Talk to an adult that you trust. There are several crisis lines that can assist as well. Some of these are: Check these sites out for further information on Healthy Relationships or School Team Advisors for Youth (STAY) Junior high schools in the Edmonton Catholic School District each have School Team Advisors for Youth (STAY) which are comprised of retired Police Officers. The STAY role involves: Educating, mentoring, and empowering students. Educating and mentoring parents on the realities their children face each day by raising parent awareness on these issues. Educating and mentoring staff on the realities that students face each day. Working in partnership with the administration of the school to develop action plans for safety and health of all students. Stay Advisors in our junior high schools make a difference in the lives of our youth by encouraging them to STAY in school. The STAY teams work hard to ensure our youth succeed in life.
Lent Message form the Religious Consultants Living in the Word of God - Mercy at the Heart of It All Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup; for all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves (1 Corinthians 11: 27-29). In previous articles on Living in the Word of God, we discovered that the Christian response to God's love revealed in Christ is threefold: worship, witness and service; the three ways in which we put into practice the Word of God. Our lives come from the mercy of God. The Lord calls us precisely in our weakness, and mercifully bestows upon us all the gifts we need for the fulfillment of our Christian calling. True worship, especially through the celebration of the Eucharist, requires that we examine our way of living, to seek forgiveness and reconciliation, to profess what we believe, and to serve others with joyful hearts. Pope Francis calls us to embrace fully the meaning of our Baptism and to live consciously as disciples of Jesus Christ. This means hearing the Word of God and practicing it. Every day we encounter a myriad of voices; some positive, some negative, endeavoring to influence and shape our way of thinking and living. Yet, for us there is only one voice that we know is fully worthy of our trust, and that voice is Jesus. To be disciples, to live in accord with our Baptismal identity and dignity, is to allow only his words to guide and direct our lives. Sandra Talarico, Religious Education Consultant Lent Message from Father Dean Among the many desires of mankind is the pursuit of power. It may be political, economic, psychological, or familial. A review of current global or local issues indicate just how many revolve around the application of power: who has it, how much, and why. Power holds a great force of influence. In most instances it is pursued so as to effect control such that one s personal intentions, needs, and wants are enacted. Essentially one wants to ensure one s needs and wants are met and served. Indeed, we know by experience that to be served feels good, but this is only so if it is done out of an authentic love which then can be reciprocated with acknowledgement and appreciation. For to be served on demand or out of mere selfishness is the antithesis of the interpretation of service Jesus both lived and extolled. As we are given to understand in every Gospel in general and Holy Thursday in particular, it is not the societal interpretation of power to which the Christian is to aspire. Rather, it is the humble service which can and likely involves a sacrifice, a task we are asked to fulfill for its own sake and the common good. Our District community has many such examples from which to draw: the new mother who sacrifices sleep to be with a sick child, the dedicated teacher who gives up the lunch hour to be with a struggling student, or the newly retired principal who volunteers their skills to help a senior in need. The way that Jesus serves is consistently defined by what he says and so by what he does. Consequently, if we desire to know what it means to be the real image and likeness of God, what it means to know ultimate power, what we ought to do is look to Jesus. And if we want to know how to be closer to God, we in turn emulate the way of Jesus: not to be served, but to serve. Holy Thursday and the Mass of the Lord s Supper will be our example
and source of inspiration: all are encouraged to attend this most special night at their local Parish. The Gospel reinforces for us that it is service to others which will show the way to what is true leadership and authentic power within the Kingdom. And the final destination of the Kingdom is all that should really matter. May we remember this during the latter of Lent and Easter soon to be: God, power, others, and me. Most sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Dean Dowle ECSD Chaplain April 2018 Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. ~John 20: 19-21~ This passage from the Gospel of John occurs on Easter morning. The disciples of Jesus are bereft at the loss of their shepherd, and it is a time of sorrow and fear. Jesus reveals himself to his followers many times over the course of the following week, and a consistent theme is that they don t recognize him as he walks among them. Each time that his people finally realize that their Lord has been walking beside them, their sorrow turns to joy. It is with that sense of joy that Jesus passes on his mission to the disciples, to go forth and spread the Good News of God s love. That is the call that he also shares with each of us as we discover the magnitude of God s love; to go forth and be missionary disciples. Edmonton Catholic Schools has once again been named one of Alberta s Top 70 Employers! This is the third consecutive year that we have earned the designation, and we are proud to be one of the leaders in our field in creating exceptional conditions for our employees! Each year, the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta sponsors the Excellence in Catholic Education Awards. These awards honor individuals who provide our students with exceptional learning experiences that are deeply rooted in our Catholic faith. We are delighted to share that 3 of our leaders are receiving this prestigious award: Floriana Bruni-Bossio, principal of St. Stanislaus Catholic Elementary School; Heather Kaup, principal of Mother Margaret Mary Catholic High School; and Hugh MacDonald, principal of St. Joseph Catholic High School. April offers opportunities for parents and guardians to join us in learning. The last session in our Mental Health Parent Evening Series, Supporting Your Child s Mental Health (Go-to
Educator)/Program Transition, will be held on Wednesday April 18 from 6:30-8 pm. Visit to learn more and register In the school year, Edmonton Catholic Schools will be expanding dual credit offerings, in partnerships with additional post-secondary institutions and industry/business. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate with Mount Royal University to offer students two courses to explore their passions and interests in Aviation. The two dual credit Aviation courses, which are required courses within the Mount Royal University Bissett School of Business Aviation Diploma, will be offered at St. Joseph Catholic High School to interested grade 11 and 12 students who meet the pre-requisites of English 30-1, Math 30-1, and medical clearance. By offering the courses after school hours, it will enable students from across our District to enroll. Students will be able to develop their knowledge to achieve Transport Canada requirements respecting navigation and aviation operations, along with Basic Meteorology to interpret weather information for pilots as supplied by Atmospheric Environment Services. In partnership with WestJet, our students will be able to experience flight simulation and in-flight experiences with trained pilots. WestJet will support this opportunity through personnel, simulator experiences, and site visitations at YEG. For more information, please contact cheryl.shinkaruk@ecsd.net. The provincial budget was tabled on March 22. Our preliminary findings are that the government will continue to provide funding for enrolment growth and we will continue to receive dollars to eliminate school fees related to instructional supplies and materials, as well as to provide transportation costs for children living 2.4 km or more from their designated school. We will receive new dollars to expand our School Nutrition Program. Overall, the rate of funding per student remains unchanged. In the upcoming weeks, we will continue to analyze the provincial budget and its implications for our District. I wish you all a blessed Easter season, and leave you with a reflection from Pope Francis: Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life! If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward. He will receive you with open arms. If you have been indifferent, take a risk: you won t be disappointed. If following him seems difficult, don t be afraid, trust him, be confident that he is close to you, he is with you and he will give you the peace you are looking for and the strength to live as he would have you do. (Pope Francis, Homily, 03/30/13) Sincerely, Sincerely, Joan Carr Superintendent
Lent Message from Archbishop Richard Smith April 2018 Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! Dear Friends, In my Christmas message to you, I spoke of the Light of Christ that broke through the darkness. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. During his life on earth, many came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Image now if you can, their disappointment when he died on the cross! That light which had come into the world seemed to have gone out but we know that the light continues to shine. At the Easter Vigil, we celebrate the light of Christ through the blessing and the lighting of the Paschal Candle. From this candle, on that night of nights, the light of Christ slowly spreads through the Church. The light of Christ is alive in the Church. We also renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil as a sign of our renewed commitment to live as Christian witnesses in the world. In parishes throughout the Archdiocese, many adults and children enter the Roman Catholic Church, after many months of preparation through the sacrament of Baptism. They receive the light of Christ from that same Paschal Candle and make their promise to live a Christian life. As a community of disciples, we are overwhelmed with joy at the rebirth of these newest members of the Church. The newly baptised are fully initiated through Confirmation and First Eucharist. Their presence is a sign of new life. In fact, they are called new sprouts or neophytes. These new sprouts are like the children in our Catholic Schools, who come to our schools in search of the Risen Lord. They encounter the Lord in the teachers and staff and also in each other. They encounter the Risen Lord in the Word of God and in the Sacraments. On their journey of faith I hope that they too will come to know and believe in Christ; to follow where He leads them. I prayer that this Easter Season be a time of growth and joy in the Risen Lord! Richard W. Smith Archbishop of Edmonton
