St. Michael s Episcopal Church 2016 Annual Report January 29, 2017 OUR MISSION St. Michael s Episcopal Church, centered in Jesus Christ, welcomes all who desire to grow in their relationship with God.

There are many who lead and many who follow in this parish. Often it is the same person who does both in different capacities. Yet it is the One true Shepherd, Jesus who we all strive to follow without fail. We give thanks every Sunday for the blessings and gifts we receive during the week and we come to the rail in humility, courage, and strength from one another to offer our lives and ourselves to Christ. This report is a means to take stock in what our offerings have been for the past year. Consistently we have been extravagant in our giving of time, treasure, and talent. But there are places we may have fallen short. Let us look to God to help us see the ways in which we may follow Jesus more faithfully and be a good and loving neighbor to those around us. We pray to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, may the offerings we give always be acceptable in your sight. Amen The Rt. Rev. Barry L. 3 St. Michael s Episcopal Church Annual Meeting Minutes January 24, 2016 The meeting was called to order by Senior Warden Tammy Murray in the Sanctuary at 11:15 a.m. Mary Ellen Ferguson was appointed Clerk for the Annual Meeting. Hunter O Hair, Michael Patrick, Virginia Henry and George Daniels were appointed tellers. Tammy explained the eligibility for vestry and convention delegate, then asked for nominations from the floor for vestry. There being none, Jim Dodds moved that the vestry slate be elected by acclamation. Tina Ferriot seconded. Motion passed. She then asked for nominations from the floor for convention delegates. There being none, Jim Sargent moved that nominations be closed. Jim Dodds seconded. Motion passed. Voting is necessary to determine alternate. Ballots for convention delegates would be collected in the Parish Hall following the conclusion of the service. The meeting was recessed until after lunch and would continue in Johnstone Hall. The meeting resumed at 11:55 in Johnstone Hall. Jim Dodds moved that the minutes of the previous meeting on Jan. 25, 2015, be passed. Seconded by Mary Ellen Ferguson. Passed. Treasurer Report: Jim Sargent gave the Treasurer s Report by title. He highlighted 2015 line items and 2016 budget items. Jim reported special gifts that had been bequeathed to St. Michael s: $50,000 from Mary Swartz, and $100,000 from Sam Soffa, brother of Selma Wolfson, $10,000 of which was designated to the Altar Guild. We had also received notice that we were listed as a beneficiary in Harry Hills will and would receive approximately $250,000 from Sally Freitag s estate. He had also determined that Ray Leber had bequeathed $27,477 that was still in the reserves. One of the goals set by the vestry this past year was to review the use of campus space. Jim stated that a committee had begun the process. There are large reserves available to improve space and replace outdated and worn equipment, reminding the congregation that people give money to St. Michael s to be used, not to sit in a bank. He announced the establishment of a separate memorial account, to be used to more easily track these large donations. As he retires as Treasurer, Jim thanked Cassidy, from Utonomy, who cleaned up our accounting system following the sudden death of our last bookkeeper, Charles Mack, diocesan auditor, who uses St. Michael s as an example for the diocese, Rev. Mary Hudak and Pastor Mary Hauck, and his wife Lisa. The congregation thanked Jim for all his dedication over the many years he served as Treasurer. Senior Warden Report: Tammy announced that balloting was closed. She filed her report by title. Tammy thanked the congregation for their support over the two years she served as Senior Warden. She is excited about the future of St. Michael s following the visioning process that had just been completed. Rector s Report: Rev. Mary thanked the outgoing vestry members Sarah Foley, Tammy Murray, Jim Dodds, Mary Ellen Ferguson and Chris Lee. She thanked the vestry for their work at moving from a vestry focused on operations to one focused on strategy. And she had special thanks for the current vestry for their work in developing the current goals and objectives. She shared the highlights of the past year, including the Bishop s visit, Community Dinners at St. Matthew s, Town Hall and World Cafes, improved web site and much more. Rev. Mary reported on our relationship with St. Matthew s. The Bishop has asked her to lead the discussion about a

deepening relationship between St. Michael s and St. Matthew s. The vestry is supportive of this. Discussions will begin with leaders of both churches. Rev. Mary presented the Bell Awards for the year to: Julie Linderman, Kate Muris, Susan and Michael Johnson and Tammy Murray. The Angel Award was presented to Jim Sargent. Election of convention delegates was announced: Janice Bowdler Jim Cole Mary Davy Mary Ellen Ferguson Mary Groesbeck Kate Muris Lisa Sargent Alternates: Marcie Larkey Elizabeth Ridinger Tina Ferriot Diane Rehrer The meeting was adjourned by acclamation at 12:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted Mary Ellen Ferguson Clerk The Rector s Report: The Very Reverend Mary Hudak Looking back at 2016, as always, I am filled with gratitude for each and every member of St. Michael s. Thank you for your participation in Worship, Outreach, Fellowship, and Formation. Thank you to the leaders of the church who make this all possible! I am also very grateful to 2016 Vestry of St. Michael s. You all have been diligent, thoughtful, and respectful in your leadership of the church. I want to especially thank the outgoing members: Huey Tidwell, Savannah Olivier, Susan Johnson, and Doug Davy. I am also very grateful for our new Treasurer Bob McMichael. He has done an outstanding job. We could not do what we do without the support and dedication of the Staff. I am very grateful for Rod Davis, Deacon Cindy Long, Glenn Croy, Mari Reddell, Connie Weichert, and John Cozza, I am delighted that we added a new member to our staff this year as well. Dave Rickert has become a valuable and outstanding member of the staff. I am very grateful for the ministry he provides for St. Michael s. The goals developed in 2015 reflect our awareness of the changing world. I continue to be grateful for the dynamic way we developed the goals through the World Cafes and open working groups. When the vestry endorsed the goals, we knew that we would not be able to meet all objectives in one year, so they were developed to reflect a three-year plan. Member Ministry has been in focus this past year. The Member Ministry Committee is working with the process developed for welcoming, tracking, and following up with visitors. 4

We had two Visitor/New Member brunches this past year which were very successful in helping new members engage more deeply in the ministries of St. Michael s. The worshipping community at St. Michael s is doing a wonderful job of welcoming visitors and helping them create meaningful connections. Thank you all so very much. There are more exciting opportunities to explore to continue to live into the Member Ministry area. Thank you to Tammy Murray and Kate Muris for leading this effort. We started the year working toward our goal and objectives in the area of Neighborhood. We have the necessary information and foundation to begin to engage this goal in 2017 or Even so, we continue to reach out the children in the neighborhood, especially those attending Starr King K-8 th. We have a homework club for the students that meets weekly under the direction of Dave and with the generosity of members donating their time and talents. We gathered again on Halloween to welcome the neighborhood children with another successful Trunk or Treat. In the area of Spiritual Formation, the Bible Study continues to be a place where people are able draw deeper into relationship with Jesus. This continues to attract a diverse group of people working together spiritually. In addition, this year we offered a small group book read during Advent. There is still more work to do in this area and we look forward to it in the coming year. Outreach continues to be an area of great focus. Under the leadership of Sue Gaston, the Chair of the Mercy and Social Justice Committee and Deacon Cindy Long, we were very successful in providing focus and balance along with creating and strengthening partner relationships. Communicating with other committees has also been a success this year. Advocacy remains to be an area that needs development. I am inspired by the constant engagement of the congregation, especially in the areas of outreach. The Oktoberfest committee and volunteers were dedicated and made the night a success from many dimensions. Not only were we able to give grants totaling $21,700, we worked together to create a joyful evening that was attended by many of our members and many of their friends. Opening St. Michael s up to an experience of fun, warmth, and generosity was the result of the well-planned experience for all. Also, the commitment to outreach is evident in the community dinners which we offer to the residents of Arden Arcade in partnership with St. Matthews. New members and repeated visitors also comment regularly that they come to St. Michael s because of our commitment to outreach. This has become an increasing integral part of who we are as church. Much of our energy was focused on the Campus Space goals. A committee was created and worked to do a campus space inventory of our needs and determine deferred maintenance issues. In addition, they developed a process to create a plan to reconfigure campus buildings to support a family church and to address maintenance issues. I am grateful for their open process that allowed every member of the congregation to be engaged. The Campus Space committee engaged HGA, an architectural firm to help us design and plan for the changes to be made. The vestry unanimously affirmed the conceptual plan recommended by the Campus Space Committee and the financial plan recommended by the finance committee. Thank you all for your diligent and excellent work. Doug Davy was instrumental in keeping this goal on track and bringing the Campus Space Renovation Plan to a place where in 2017 we can share the fruits of labor with an updated campus. I am looking forward to developing and creating New and Innovative Worship. We will be equipped for exciting things to happen in the newly renovated classroom and worship space. Already with some slight modifications to the Language Lab classroom, Centering Prayer is 5

enjoying a more sacred and holy atmosphere. They too are growing, as a result of our generous sharing of resource. Centering Prayer will now be meeting every week instead of twice a month. The music program continues to be one of the strong traditions we cherish at St. Michael s. The choir has led us deeper into the words of scripture and themes of our work to love and worship God. We are truly blessed to have such excellent leaders and dedicated choir members. This year, we began monthly Town Hall meetings to inform the congregation of relevant topics and seek questions and discussion. We will continue with the Town Hall meetings into I am excited for the beginning of a new year. I am encouraged by the vibrancy, energy, and commitment that I see in all areas of ministry. I believe that we continue to deepen our faith, trust, and commitment to Christ and I cannot wait to see where the Spirit moves us this next year. Faithfully submitted, Rev. 8 The Head of School's Report: Mary Heise St. Michael's Episcopal Day School It is the MISSION of St. Michael's Episcopal Day School to provide a learning environment where students are encouraged to seek scholastic, artistic and physical achievement through a curriculum that is both traditional and integrated. In its programs, St. Michael's seeks to discover and nurture the gifts that each student possesses; to deepen each student's understanding of the complexities of the world; and to inspire each student to realize his or her full potential. Towards this end, the school is committed to helping students develop -- Self-worth Passion for Learning Formation of Character Individual and Social Responsibility Ethical Responsibility Respect for Diversity Spiritual growth The school's ultimate aim is to create a learning environment where students, faculty, and parents work together in forming a caring community in which all support and share in each other's growth. The end result is the development of the total child-- spiritually, physically, socially, and academically-- and a lifelong enjoyment of learning. The school began its fifty third year on September 9, 2016 with 252 students enrolled in early childhood (3-day preschool and 5-day pre-kindergarten) through grade 8, and 49 experienced and dedicated teachers and staff who share an enthusiastic commitment to challenging young minds. Showing care and concern for others is something that is stressed at all age levels and in many different ways at St. Michael's School. Our Service Learning program continues to thrive with the help and support of parents who serve as drivers for off-campus projects and assist with supervision. In addition to individual class service projects that support the overall educational process, all the children participate in the collection of food to support River City Community Services and St. Matthew's Food Closet, and in the collection of toys, school supplies and clothing items to assist families in need at Christmas. As always, one of my primary goals as Head of School is to help foster the best possible working relationship between St. Michael's Church and St. Michael's School. The support for the school by the Rector, Wardens, Vestry and Parishioners is an example of the mutual care and concern we share for one another, as we carry out our common mission. 9 The Senior Warden s Report: Doug Davy After a busy week of meetings, Reverend Mary turned to me and said: phew, there s a lot going on. That really sums up an interesting, rewarding, and eventful year at St. Michael s. There has been and continues to be truly a lot going on, with the Campus Space Renovation, the Center at St. Matthews, and a developing Member Ministry, among many more highlights. The Vestry continued pursuing major goals developed under a three-year plan at the 2014 retreat. This year, we focused particularly on Outreach to the Community, Member Ministry, and Campus Space Renovation. We have made significant progress in all of these areas under the capable leadership of Reverend Mary and many others. St. Matthew s has long been a broad focus outreach ministry for St. Michael s. This year, with the dedication and hard work of Deacon Cindy and the Mercy and Social Justice Committee and working closely with St. Matthew s and the local community, the monthly community dinners and many other outreach activities continued and were well attended by a large number from St. Michael s. These events have been fun and very rewarding and the strong turnout and enthusiastic support are a real credit to St. Michael s as we continue our long-term focus on helping and building relationships with those in need. In addition, it was the determined leadership of Reverend Mary who recognized an opportunity to transform St. Matthew s from a family parish on the verge of closing into a regional outreach center for a community. Quite simply, Reverend Mary made the Center at St. Matthew s happen administratively, guided by inspired vision and organizational acumen. The transformation of St. Matthews is amazing and the potential for growth as an outreach center is impressive and St. Michael s should be proud to be such a major part of it. The Member Ministry charted and prepared a detailed program for shepherding guests and new members and taking care of existing members that includes communicating effectively, helping people find meaningful ministries, and making all persons feel welcome at St. Michael s. The efforts of Committee Chair Tammy Murray, Junior Warden Kate Muris, and others on the committee have continued to foster the strong community feeling that is a special mark of St. Michael s. The campus space renovation program began with a challenge to repair our crumbling and hazardous flooring and as well as to create effective Sunday School rooms and a Nursery and has developed into an exciting renovation that will update and transform St. Michaels facilities. Details about the program are found in a separate annual report for the Campus Space Renovation Committee. It has been a real privilege to serve on the St. Michael s Vestry and as Senior Warden. Many thanks to our wonderful Staff, and to Kate Muris, Junior Warden and Stewardship Committee Chair; Diane Rehrer, Clerk of the Vestry; and Bob McMichael, Treasurer, for your work on the Executive Team. Thanks to all of the Vestry and Ministry Leaders for your dedication and hard work. It is the generosity and support of all of our parishioners who continue to create and renew St. Michael s as a community of faith that matters because it makes a difference in the lives of our members and those in our broader community. Doug Davy Senior Warden

The Junior Warden s Report: Kate Muris I am deeply grateful to Rev. Mary and our wonderful congregation at St. Michael s for the opportunity to be on your Vestry these past two years, and to be your Junior Warden for I know the Holy Spirit has been at work in me and in our parish. I have grown personally and spiritually watching and learning how your Vestry works and how so many of you in your committees and ministries function and grow too. We have an amazing group of people here at St. Michael s with an abundance of love, sharing, talent, and caring. It is evident everywhere you look. One example is our New Member Ministry under the capable leadership of Tammy Murray. As we have had many new members over the past few years we decided to have a New Member Brunch in June. We had 39 folks attend and it was delightful to share who we are, where we re from, why we came to St. Michael s and what we look forward to. We will have another such Brunch January 22, The new Member Packet that Rev. Mary and others put together is terrific! It consists of a welcome letter from Rev. Mary, an information Sheet, an Estimate of Giving Card, a colorful 2 page list covering all our ministries and Ministry Leaders with name and contact information, and color photos and personal information of our Clergy and Staff Leadership. It has been very well received by our newcomers! Additionally, our New Member Team follows up after the coffee mug/info card has been received with phone calls or s reaching out to offer additional information or to answer questions. It is so rewarding to hear from a large percentage of our newcomers that our fantastic website was a major draw to visit us. And I must give a shout-out to Coffee Hour! It is truly an enriching experience to share not only our beautiful church but our hospitality at the coffee table and treats with those who are new. It s a great opportunity to ask some questions and suggest some connections that might be of interest. I m excited to see our congregation growing in this ministry. A second Ministry I am so excited about is our Stewardship growth! I was amazed at how easy it was to put together our wonderful New Consecration Sunday Team Members! Each of the five who spoke at our services had a unique and moving story about listening to God for guidance in their giving. Those who helped prepare, set up, and take down our New Consecration Sunday meals were wonderful the table was beautiful and the food fantastic! We have received over 130 pledges so far and 13 are new pledges! It was our third year using this particular program and I hope you all feel it was as meaningful, rewarding, and spiritual as I do. I feel this past year has been full of growth for us all - with the challenges facing us as church and the opportunities all around us to serve. There are 23 Opportunities in Worship, to Learn, to Connect and to Serve just at St. Michaels and St. Matthew s alone! I believe your Vestry, Ministry Leaders and your amazing Clergy are united to help us continue to grow in our hospitality, personal spirituality, and to serve others even more in the coming years. As a 40 year member of St. Michael s, I must say I am more excited to be a member of this parish now than I have ever been. It has been a joy to serve you as your Junior Warden. Thank you. Respectfully submitted, Kate Muris

Treasurer s Report: Bob McMichael The Treasurer is elected by the vestry and reports to the vestry. The primary objective of the Treasurer is to assure the Vestry that the church finances are being recorded properly and monitored for correctness. Any and all financial receipts and payments are conducted utilizing a two party system to assure correctness. Through monthly reports during the year, the vestry is apprised of how the finances are comparing to the budget. At the end of the year a budget for the following year is developed for Vestry Approval. The end of year financials and the budget for the upcoming year are included in this Annual Report. A financial audit is conducted with the Dioceses every year. Our Bookkeeper, Mari Reddel and our Accountant, Brenda Paredes from the accounting firm Utonomy, excel in utilizing church financial accounting systems. I want to thank them both for their dedicated service to St Michael s. FINANCIAL STATUS OF ST. MICHAEL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH The preliminary year-end financial operating report is included in this Annual Report. At the end of the year we had $1,300,000 of unrestricted funds available and invested through the Dioceses. $340,000 of this is due to bequests received during this 2016 year from the estates of Sally Freitag and Mary Swartz. Net Income for the year was $330,277 mostly because of the unplanned bequests. After bequests are removed the Net Income was a negative -$10,036. This was not a surprise as we were budgeting for a small net loss of -$29,039. The actual loss was primarily influenced by an overage in Building and Grounds Expenses. Outreach income and expenditures: A great big, THANK YOU to the Women of the Church, who worked so hard on the fundraisers! They generated $5,000 from the Church Indoor Yard Sale and $20,000 from the Octoberfest. From these funds St Michael s was able to provide over $21,000 in Outreach Grants. THE YEAR AHEAD: As we embark on the 2017 year we have opportunities that we will embrace. We look forward to any church facility renovation and will be carefully watching our financial commitments. The 2017 Budget that was approved by the Finance Committee, was forwarded to the Vestry and approved by the Vestry. The detailed budget is included in this Annual Report. A brief summary of the budget will be provided at the Annual Meeting. Respectfully submitted, Robert McMichael, Treasure

St. Michael s Day School Board of Trustees Gail McMichael, Vestry Representative For the past year it has been my extreme pleasure to serve as the Vestry Representative to the St Michael s Day School Board of Trustees. I wish each of you could experience a relationship with the students and staff of this outstanding school. The current enrollment of 252 is the highest in several years. This is a testament to the outstanding staff and the respect St Michaels Day School has in the community. I have had an opportunity to work with several staff members and students and am continually impressed with the quality and dedication shown by each of them. The core values of Integrity, Respect, Compassion, Responsibility, and Diligence are evident in everything the school does. The Board of Trustees is comprised of dedicated parents, staff member serving in ex officio capacities and a representative from the church Vestry. The Board is constantly aware of situations within the school and is aware of the importance of maintaining a strong and secure financial base. Rev Mary has played a very visible role within the school, strengthening the relationship between church and school. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Vestry Representative to the St Michael s Day School Board of Trustees. Respectfully Submitted, Gail McMichael Buildings & Grounds: Dick Pryor The Buildings & Grounds Committee has the goal of helping with the maintenance of the Church campus to keep our facilities safe, functional and attractive. We have had several work parties to help maintain the landscaping by removing tree and shrub seedlings, trimming plants and applying mulch. Putting up the Christmas wreaths and lights on the exterior of the Church and trees is also one of the work party projects. Campus Space Renovation: Doug Davy The Campus Space Renovation began with the challenge to repair our crumbling and possibly hazardous flooring and create effective Sunday School rooms and a Nursery. It has broadened into a more general renovation that is long overdue and will transform St. Michael s facilities. Generous bequests made by parishioners have made it possible for us to invest in updating and upgrading our physical plant in ways that will make our church more attractive and more useful to ourselves and to others. Our beloved church building has seen only minor remodeling since it was built more than 50 years ago. It is crumbling in places, and it needs renovation. Some of the finishes, including the flooring, floor tile mastic, and acoustical ceiling material, are deteriorating. Scientific testing has shown that these materials contain asbestos, a carcinogen that becomes much more hazardous as the materials that contain it age and begin to break down. The renovation program is an initiative to resolve this important health hazard issue and also bring the building up to date.

New flooring and ceiling finishes will also make the building feel newer, fresher, and more pleasant, will improve our worship experience, and make our worship space more attractive to visitors and prospective new members. A second major driver of the renovation is the need to create more functional educational spaces. Our Nursery and Sunday School rooms have at times seemed like an afterthought, not spaces clearly and thoughtfully designed for Christian education. We owe our families and children better facilities. The renovation is also an opportunity to reconfigure our worship space in a way that is more consistent with the contemporary theology that we practice, of a priesthood of all believers who gather around an altar table, as is already reflected in the 5 pm service. We will also be improving the acoustics and lighting in our worship space, improving the location of the Columbarium, and addressing issues of deferred maintenance (roof, painting). The renovated church will look different, sound different, and feel different than it now does. With the capable help of our architects, designers, and consultants, these differences will enhance worship and Christian education at St. Michael s. A major renovation program takes a secure vision for the future and a will to step forward and improve facilities that have served us well in the past but need repair and updating. We will be announcing the start of a Capital Campaign that will give our parishioners the opportunity to contribute to the renovation at the Annual Meeting. Please join me in strongly supporting this program to invest in ourselves, improve our educational facilities, and transform St. Michaels worship space in a dramatic and effective way. Respectfully Submitted, Doug Davy Campus Space Renovation Chair Finance Committee: Elizabeth Ridinger The Finance Committee members of St. Michael s Episcopal Church are Bob McMichael Treasurer, Elizabeth Ridinger Chair, Virginia Henry, Chuck Schaller, Jim Dodds and Cary Adams as Vestry Liaison. It is the responsibility of the Finance Committee to propose a budget for the Vestry: then raises, manages, and distributes the financial resources of the congregation to support and strengthen the mission and ministry of the congregation. The Finance Committee began the 2016 finance year with our newly elected Treasurer, Bob McMichael. Bob has had a very successful career in business and finance and started out the 2016 year at St. Michael s by hitting the ground and running. During the 2016 year the Finance Committee reviewed and approved all major expenditures; and expenses involved with the Campus Space Building Program. 13

Communication Committee: Rick Larkey and David Rickert Mission Statement: Effectively communicates the Mission, Vision, Activities, and other parish related subjects that support the three-year plan of St. Michael s Church to its members and the community at large 2016 Participants: Rick Larkey Chair, Rev. Mary Hudak, Jim Sargent, George Daniels, Jim Cole, Kate Muris, Dave Rickert, & Betsy Stone. The Communications Committee: Provides strong leadership, guidance, vision and support for current and future parish media activities and practices; and Provides support and encouragement to St. Michael s Ministry Groups in matters that involve effective communications within and from our parish to others through systematic structure of communication practices. CHARTER: The Communications Committee is a Standing Committee of the Vestry and one Vestry member shall serve on the committee at all times. The Vestry representative is elected by the current Vestry. Other appointed members are to be members of record of the congregation Efforts Assisted in the development of the New Member Packet Recruited Kate Muris as a Vestry Representative and also member of the New Member Outreach Committee. Jim Sargent and George Daniels left the Committee mid year Researched communication plans and decided to focus on developing a communications schedule of which Dave Rickert assumed responsibility. Met through September, decided to suspend operations for the present as the work of the committee was ceasing to be productive for a variety of reasons Successes Guidelines established for effective communication in service bulletin. Established standards for typeface, logo use and blue St. Michael s color. Expanded use of existing software and copier for production of event cards, stationery and flyers. Established standards for layout and content of Messenger. Developed goals for Friday s and set up regular schedule for staff and clergy messages. Redesigned format to increase readability on mobile, laptop and desktop screens. Created template for event planning to document strategy for verbal, written, web and communication GOALS Revisit purpose, deliverables, and member composition in 2017 after Vestry planning session to determine need for the committee. Create style guide to document standards for typeface, logo use and colors. Establish a schedule/protocol to update website on a regular basis. Review effectiveness/consistency of bulletin information, cards, flyers, website and Messenger. Explore creating a St. Michael s informational booklet to give to visitors at large events. This would be a piece that changes throughout the year, perhaps combining with Messenger or New Member packages.

Strengthen Friday to be available to all those interested in St. Michael s, including those who prefer print copies in mail or picked up at church. Create an easy way for visitors to sign up for this during their first visit, perhaps with mobile phone app on staff or clergy phones. Acolytes: Pam Busby I can hardly believe another year has passed. I give thanks for the gifts of service provided by; Betsy Tanner, Cassidy Barry, Taylor Donoghue, Brady Hegland, Quinn Patrick and Ramiro Barrera for their many years of Acolyte Service and leadership as team leaders. I also give thanks for Justin Sievers, Thomas Decker and Toby Keys three of our Acolytes that served through this year and are now actively supporting their competitive sports and musical events. The word acolyte is derived from the Greek word akolouthos, meaning companion, attendant, or helper. Acolytes have a rich history both in the Old Testament of the Bible and in the ancient Church. In the ancient Church, there were four Minor Orders (the highest being acolyte, then exorcist, lector and porter). The acolyte is a service of honor to God and to the worshiping community. In the early times, the purpose of the order was to prepare young men to become priests. Not until the 1980s were girls and women allowed to serve. Although ministries and doctrines have changed over time, the core duties of an acolyte have remained much the same for hundreds of years. Acolyte duties then and now included lighting and extinguishing candles, carrying candles in procession, taking charge of the alms basin (offering bowl), helping the priest prepare for the Eucharist, and generally fetching and carrying. For the 10:00 service our Acolyte teams are being led by: Betsy Tanner, Cassidy Barry, Taylor Donoghue, Brady Hegland, Quinn Patrick and Ramiro Barrera. We have a great group of young people serving on their teams; Michael Donoghue, Parker Judd-Rose, Emily Hegland, Cassidy Barry, Conner Barry, Jasmine Lee, Jack Williams, Bradley Williams. Virginia Henry and I are responsible for wrangling these teams and are grateful for the assistance we receive from Deacon Cindy Long. We have welcomed Jack and Bradley Williams to the Acolyte Ministry this year and welcome students and adults alike to consider participating in this ministry. Come see any of us to learn about this ministry. For the 8:00 service, I give thanks to David Karoly, Shawn Asher and Tina Ferriot for their continued ministry and commitment to our parish. Serving as an Acolyte is a commitment of your time and talent to the lord s service and is greatly appreciated. Altar Guild: Jan Bowdler and Sally Jervis St. Michael s Altar Guild prepares the sanctuary for the following regular services: Sundays, baptisms, weddings and memorials, as well as special services at Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and Easter. Members of the Altar Guild are divided into four weekly crews. Each crew member is asked to do set up from 9:00-10:30 a.m. on the Saturday of her week and to serve at one of the services that Sunday. 15

Members of the Altar Guild are: Dancy Dobrenick, Jackie Linn, Patty Green, and Anna Johnson. Mary Ellen Ferguson, Sally Jervis, Lynn White and Sue Corbin. Pat Williams, Finette Carpenter, Jackie Croy, Jane Samuelson and Tammy Murray. Janice Bowdler, Marilyn Poindexter, Carolyn Wilson and Kay Griffin. Those in bold are the crew leaders. Sue Corbin devotes many extra hours to memorial services, Helena Bennett kindly irons our small linens even week, and Marge Witt writes the thank you notes for floral contributions. All of the above people worked very hard in 2016, especially Easter Week and over Christmas. Special thanks go to Jackie Linn and Dancy Dobrenick for their floral decorations at those services. We continue to replace and replenish vestments, vessels and other equipment necessary for our services and are grateful for contributions that make this possible. We also thank Rytina Cleaners for laundering the large fair linens and cleaning our vestments. Music Ministry: Constance Weichert The purpose of the music ministry is to provide beautiful music, which will enhance the worship experience and glorify God by uplifting the hearts and minds of both the listeners and the participants, and to offer participants an opportunity to share their musical talents in a meaningful and fulfilling way. Musical/service highlights of 2016 include the following for which the choir sang: Independence Day Sunday/Sundae Sunday The annual choir retreat in October Lessons and Carols December 23 rd Additionally, we sang for Mary Frances Endicott s memorial service in January, the All Souls service October 30 th, the community dinner at St. Mathew s December 5 th, and for our beloved Edie Decker s memorial service in July. In addition to Edie, who was a current choir member, and Mary Frances, who was a former choir member, we said farewell to David Ford and long-time member, Mark Van Brussel, both of whom were tenors; so we find ourselves in great need of tenors. Many thanks to all the members of the St. Michael s Chancel Choir who give so generously of their time, talent, energy, and resources. Special thanks to our music librarians Kay and Hugh Griffin, Susan Johnson, and Paula Frink - who do a heroic job of keeping our music library organized and accessible. Special thanks also goes to Virginia Henry who handles our petty cash fund. And last, but not least, special thanks to John Cozza who, while not actually a member of St. Michael s, so abundantly shares his musical gifts, knowledge, and expertise with all of us. I also want to thank the St. Michael s clergy, all of whom are so supportive and encouraging of our music program. If you are interested in joining St. Michael s Chancel Choir, feel free to contact me, or any of our choir members, and we would be happy to talk with you. You do not have to be able to read music. The only requirement is that you are able to match pitches and that you bring a willing heart, an open mind, a desire to work hard, and a commitment to give of your best. All sections are open for new members. Please join us in glorifying God through music and being part of the family which is the St. Michael s Chancel Choir. Constance Weichert, Music Director

Lay Ministry: The Rev. Mary Hudak Lay ministry is made up many individuals who live out their call to serve God through leadership and participation in the Worship service. We have Greeters who welcome worshipers and answer any questions visitors might have. The Healing Prayer Ministers pray privately with members when there is need. The Lay Eucharistic Ministers assist with the chalice and many bring the celebration of Sunday worship to others in our parish that cannot come to the church building. The Lay Readers bring Scripture to life by reading and leading the Psalms. The Ushers also greet members of the congregation, give out service bulletins, and make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. These ministries do the important work of making an appropriate space for all to come to worship and adore God. Lay Eucharistic Ministers have been through a discernment and training period and are licensed by the Bishop. This past year many members have become Eucharistic Ministers, Eucharistic Visitors, Ushers, and Readers. In 2017 our goal is to enhance the Healing Prayer ministry. We hope to offer healing prayers every Sunday at our services. Everyone at St. Michael s is invited to discern with members of the congregation his or her calling on how to serve God. Pastoral Care: The Rev. Cindy Long I would like to begin by thanking the members of the Pastoral Care Committee who work together to plan and oversee Pastoral Ministries at St Michael s: Tina Ferriot, Kate Muris, Lisa Sargent and our newest member, Sue Corbin. All not only serve on the committee but are also each personally involved in providing and helping to coordinate Pastoral Care ministries. Many thanks also go to all of the congregation members who serve in our lay pastoral care ministries. Without you all we could not do this! In 2016 Pastoral Care continued building upon existing ministries and evolving to help meet the pastoral needs of our congregation. Ministries currently include: Pastoral Partners, who send cards and make calls to help people stay connected, Caring Hearts, who provide rides and meals to people whose life circumstances cause them to need some assistance with those things, Community of Hope Pastoral Ministers, who offer the ministry of a caring presence for people who are going through difficult or lonely times, Healing Prayer Ministers, who offer prayers for people during our first Sunday of the month worship services, Licensed Eucharistic Visitors, who carry Holy Communion, along with the prayers of our congregation, to people who are unable to come to church and GriefShare, our facilitated grief support group. Through these programs lay pastoral ministers and clergy work in conjunction to help to meet the pastoral needs of this congregation on many levels. Some highlights for We hosted two thank you retreats for all of our Pastoral Caregivers. Each featured a luncheon and an inspirational guest speaker and had 30+ attendees. Our Community of Hope Pastoral Ministers were instrumental in providing ongoing spiritual companionship and support for 16 congregation members who were experiencing serious illness, grief and other stressful life situations. Lisa Sargent continued coordinating the monthly support and education gatherings for this group. In 2016, the 23 person Caring Hearts team, facilitated by Tina Ferriot, helped congregation members by providing 61 rides and 35 meals, in times of need. Pastoral Partner leadership was officially taken on by Sue Corbin, who is working with our Pastoral Partners to assure that members feel connected to the congregation with cards and check ins. Our Grief support group, facilitated by myself and Tina Ferriot began in February, meets twice a month and has had over 14 participants. 17

Our goals for 2017 include: Continuing current ministries, expanding our Grief Support Group to include both congregation and community members and hosting our third annual All Pastoral Care Minister Thank You Retreat on June 24 th, We are continually fine tuning our ministries to best serve our congregation and provide opportunities for people to engage in ministry with their God given gifts. If you would like to be a part of the Pastoral Care Planning team or be involved in any of the pastoral care ministries, or if you would like to receive pastoral care, please contact Deacon Cindy Long or one of our team members. Respectfully, Deacon Cindy Long, Deacon for Pastoral Care and Outreach Prayer Teams: The Rev. Rod Davis For more than a decade men in the Parish have been praying confidentially for those needing prayer support. They serve on a team in doing so and currently 28 men serve in this ministry. Through , Fr. Rod+ forwards to team members requests that he receives from members themselves as well as requests forwarded by Mari, the Office Manager. Two lists are periodically updated. One list consists of people whose request will be honored for two weeks. A second list consists of people needing long term support, such as someone deployed to Afghanistan, an expectant mother and her child, or someone suffering from a chronic illness. Team members hold names up to God in prayer. Most of the men say the names at convenient times during the day, e.g., during morning coffee, while stopped at a traffic light, during a walk or other daily exercise. This is a confidential ministry in that the names do not necessarily go onto the public parish prayer list. The following men are currently serving in this ministry: Skip Metcalf, Hugh Griffin, Jay Glad, Mark Van Brussel, Paul Hauck, Jim Weichert, Dick Pryor, Don Hall, Jack Stellman, Cary Adams, Bob Lucas, Jim Cole, Chuck Schaller, Todd Murray, Warner Seargeant, Doug Davy, Frank Brown, Dave Abbott, Paul Phinney, John Jervis, Mark Wiederanders, Dallas Pennington, Jim Sargent, Hunter O'Hair, Herb Rodebaugh, and Peter Luchini. In conjunction with this ministry, Fr. Rod+ forwards the names and photos of expectant mothers to the sisters and brothers of the Order of Julian of Norwich. This semienclosed monastic order of our Church prays for expectant moms and their babies each and every day during their noon chapel session. If you are a man and would like to participate in this ministry, please let Fr. Rod+ know. The Prayer Chain currently has 20 members. Any Parish Member may add someone to the Prayer Chain including family members and friends. A Member Prayer List is published each week in the Sunday Bulletin and prayed for during the Prayers of the People. This list is limited to members of our parish. This allows our congregation to pray for each other in a time of need. Members of St. Michael s Parish may add someone to the Prayer Chain by calling/ ing the Church Office. Members may also call/ the Church Office to have a friends or family member added to the Prayer Chain. Thank you to all who participate in this important ministry. Many members and those for whom pray have expressed their gratitude and have reported back repeated the wonderful effects our prayers. Prayer is a powerful thing! 18

Mercy & Social Justice: Sue Gaston and Deacon Cindy Long The Mercy and Social Justice Ministry continues to represent God s love and compassion through acts of mercy and justice. In 2016 the Committee focused on providing financial support, in kind donations, providing service, and forming partnerships. Financial support continues via the monthly Soup Pot collections to support River City Food Bank, Loaves and Fishes, and St. Matthews. Habitat for Humanity received a grant for the latest project. In addition, funds from the Indoor Yard Sale and Octoberfest were used to make grants to Loaves and Fishes, St. Matthews, Parkinson s Association of California, Transitional Living Center, Society for the Blind, and Kiwanis Family House. The Thanksgiving and Easter gift cards were also presented to Loaves and Fishes and River City Food Bank. In Kind donations Included over 100 backpacks for Starr King School, over 200 Angel Bags, toys for St. Matthews Christmas Celebration, over 100 Gifts from the Heart, the donations from the Advent bags, and the Food Barrel collections. Service projects included the monthly dinners at St. Matthews, monthly food preparation and serving at Loaves and Fishes, Helping Hands Laundry, and our participation with Winter Sanctuary at Carmichael Presbyterian and St. Mark s. A new project is the weekly after school group supporting the children from Starr King. Partnerships were strengthened with agencies and the Arden Arcade Carmichael Faith Communities. What a list! And that is not all - just the highlights. In 2017, there will be opportunities to participate in Winter Sanctuary, Habitat for Humanity projects, projects at St. Matthews, and a new project - Stop Hunger Now on April 1. Many thanks to the people of St. Michael s for your generous support in terms of time, talent and treasure. Thanks to Deacon Cindy and the members of the Committee who are so passionate and dedicated to this work. Note from Deacon Cindy- Thank you to Sue Gaston who does an excellent job as chair of this committee! Her dedication, organizational skills and passion for justice are great gifts to St Michael s. You are invited to join us. Look for meeting notices in the Sunday Bulletin. There are many opportunities to join others from St. Michael s as we go into the world in peace to love and serve. Respectfully submitted, Sue Gaston Scholarship Committee The Scholarship Fund is designed to open the doorway to a college education by offering partial financial assistance to eligible candidates from either St. Michael s Episcopal Church or St. Matthew s Episcopal Church. Each year, at the beginning of February, the Sundays bulletins will remind seniors to pick up their Scholarship applications. Last year, our Scholarship recipient was Brithanya Acuna-Varela. Members of the Scholarship committee are Warner Seargeant, Sue Corbin, Dorothy Eddings, Mary Hutchinson, Margaret Kendall, Kathy Lunger and Kitty Williamse. Respectfully submitted, Sue Corbin 19

Family Ministries: David Rickert MISSION The youth and family ministry at St. Michael's strives to give young people and children (birth-high school seniors) a sustainable faith by teaching them about Jesus, serving our community, and worshiping as a church family LEADERS Godly Play Mary Groesbeck, Cynthia Metcalf, Sally Jervis & Sue Davis Youth (5 th -12 th ) Dave Rickert 2016 SUCCESSES Established policy to have 2 adults at all times in Nursery. Toys organized and new ones purchased. Godly Play moved to renovated language lab to improve space quality and parent visibility. Godly Play teachers created an adaptive approach to teaching an ever-changing group. Easter Egg hunt, Trunk or Treat, St. Francis Day and Christmas Eve well attended by children. Adult involvement fostered in each of these events. Christmas pageant intentionally incorporated adults to promote intergenerational relationships. These relationships are also seen within a typical Sunday service, where an older parishioner is alongside a youth, teaching them about the liturgy and Eucharist. Youth Group relationships strengthened through a combination of open-ended discussions focused on current events/challenges and structured activities. Outreach in the form of afterschool snacks and fellowship to Starr King K-8 students formalized to a once-a-week time that incorporates St. Michael s volunteers. This is attended by 8-30 kids. Summer Vacation Bible School, in partnership with Trinity Cathedral, had a vibrant group of approximately 25 kids each day for a week. Confirmation class completed by 3 youth. Besides interactive learning, there were also service opportunities to put our words in to actions. For one youth, his positive experience serving at River City Food Bank was his first time serving the poor. He s eager to do more GOALS Establish weekly communication to parents on Godly Play and Youth Group lessons. Gain greater understanding of the needs of the world through a Youth Mission Trip, planned with Trinity Cathedral in August. Based upon parent requests, explore possibility of expanding length of Summer Vacation Bible School. Create regular opportunities with a service provider such as River City Food Bank for youth service hours. Advertise this throughout all our contacts, including St. Michael s Day School. Establish policy and increase use of text to communicate with Youth Group. 20

Add another level of Sunday School group for those kids too old for Godly Play but too young for Youth Group. Establish an assignment calendar for teachers, along with regular ways to support their discipleship. Overnight event already planned for February 2017 that includes our youth group, along with groups from Trinity Folsom, St. Martin s Davis and Trinity Cathedral. Increase opportunities like this for community building. Spiritual Formation: The Very Rev. Mary Hudak Spiritual Formation at St. Michael s takes place in many ways by many means. We believe all we do is an opportunity for formation. In 2016, formation took place through: Discussions on topics generated through preaching, Bible Study: We studied the Gospel of Matthew, the Book of Revelation, and the Gospel of Luke. This is a Bible Study that s focus is on how scripture can inform and transform our daily lives. Lenten book study Advent small groups gathering to read From Holiday to Holy Days: A Benedictine Walk through Advent. Prayer Beads Adult and Youth Confirmation Class Worship, Outreach, Mercy and Social Justice, Pastoral Care, Vestry, and other ministries also have educational and transformational opportunities for spiritual growth as well. We will continue these opportunities into One of our parish wide goals for this year was to continue to develop the Spiritual Formation Committee and create new small group opportunities for the members of our parish to become a place where we are intentional about deepening our relationship with Jesus and in doing so are able to spread the Gospel in a myriad of ways. We were successful in offering this small group experience in Advent. We will continue this during the season of Lent in Education for Ministry (EfM): Janice Bowdler and Sue Gaston, co-mentors Education for Ministry is a four year study and group reflection process for the formation of Christian ministry. The seminar group meets weekly on Tuesday evenings during the academic year. The materials are developed by the School of Theology of The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and are comprised primarily of texts and essays in the study of the Christian tradition. Year 1 students study the Old Testament, Year 2- the New Testament, Year 3- Church history and Year 4- Theology. Students commit to one year at a time. (There are no tests!) The St. Michael s group is enthusiastic, spiritual, challenging and inspiring. Each week we discuss our assigned readings, engage in theological reflection, pray together and share our life and spiritual experiences. Current students include Dorothy Eddings, Allison Flower, Susan Johnson, Judy Kennedy, Marcie Larkey, Tom Pinto and Ellen Cehand. For more information contact Sue Gaston or Janice Bowdler. 21

Daughters of the King (D.O.K.): E. Sue Corbin The Daughters of the King is a lay Order of women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church or Churches in communion with it and Churches that are in the Historic Episcopate. We choose to deepen our Baptismal vows by taking on a Rule of Prayer, Service and Evangelism. We pray daily for our clergy, church members and those on the prayer chain. On April 16, 2016, Daughters of St. Michael s, Prince of Peace (St. Francis) and Maranatha (St. Clement) chapters hosted the Spring Assembly at St. Michael s Episcopal Church and 61 Daughters from the Diocese of Northern CA. attended the all day gathering. Rev. Mary was our celebrant and speaker. The theme was: Church Today: What Can We Give Up and Still Be Faithful? Apart from the Diocesan Assembly, our chapter was also able to acquire two speakers; John Barton from Latter Day Saints and our own Dave Rickert for our meetings. We have joined the Scholarship Committee as part of our Service Project besides sending out weekly Sundays bulletins to those who are unable to attend Church. Last year, our chapter donated backpacks to Starr King k-8 th and collected Christmas greeting cards for PRIDE industries. Our chapter plans to provide snacks for Starr King School. Our dear Daughter Edie Decker passed away on June 24, She will be sorely missed and she will be forever in our hearts. The Men's Breakfast Group: Dick Pryor The Men's Breakfast group is a small group of men that meet for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. The group is not restricted to members of St. Michael's and has no agenda or program. The men's group also help organize, prepare and serve the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out): Jay Glad This is a lunch group, the name of which is self-explanatory. We meet monthly on the third Thursday at noon. We usually have about 12 old men there and we have a grand time eating lunch and talking about the good old days. St. Margaret s Guild: Marilyn Jones, Billie McPhillips, and Geneva Pratt St. Margaret s Guild is an informal group of women of St. Michael s that gathers for lunch on the 2 nd Monday. The hostess of the month chooses the restaurant and makes the arrangements. She notifies the office for publication in the bulletin and the Messenger. Guests are cordially invited also. We each contribute $1.00 for outreach programs. We hope you will join us. If you have any questions, please call any of the names above. 22

Mission Avenue Players (MAP): Michael Walker Connecting with the Community One Show at a Time Our mission is to create, encourage and be fully committed to a positive theatrical experience which our casts, our crews and our audiences can take with them and gift to the larger community, and to ensure participation in and enjoyment of live theatre for all ages in our congregation and the larger community. Because of our partnership with St. Michael s, MAP is able to do what we do. In May, we produced Tuesdays with Morrie by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom (based on the book by Mitch Albom) and donated 50% of the proceeds to the Greater Sacramento Chapter of the ALS Association. Thanks to our St. Michael s congregation, we also sponsored the Gifts from the Heart program. Through your continued generosity, the Sacramento Department of Health and Human Services was able to provide Christmas Gifts to over 110 area children, seniors and dependent adults. We received several letters of thanks from the recipients including a 74 year old dependent adult and a family of six children. MAP has provided the fresh cut Christmas tree for the Parish Hall every year, sponsored the Celtic Christmas Celebration with Molly s Revenge and presented two Choral Readings for the 10 am Sunday service. We look forward to a Surprise Summer Production in 2017.
