Le Chevalier Congratulations to Prior Mollison July 2013 Newsletter of the South Australia Priory Order of St John Of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller Australasia

Editor s Comments The photograph on our front cover in this edition places our new Prior Chevalier Col. Dr. Brenton Mollison firmly in the spotlight as he takes over from Chevalier Professor John Jackson. Among visitors from as far as Victoria and Western Australia there were greetings and congratulatory best wishes all round for him following the 2013 Investiture Service. We also include an interesting article by our Nordic brothers and sisters. From The Mary Potter Foundation Reflections of her time at Mary Potter Hospice - by Sophia Thompkins The following is an excerpt from a reflection by medical student, Sophia Thompkins. She begins My understanding of both the scientific and psychosocial aspects of medicine has evolved significantly during the three weeks that I have had the privilege to be in the Mary Potter Hospice. I feel confident that the experience I have had here will have a very positive impact on the way I approach my medical practice in the future. Academically, this rotation has opened my eyes to many aspects of medicine that I previously had limited knowledge of. I feel that I have gained a better understanding of how to approach managing a patient s symptoms, and this will help me as a future doctor in managing my patients, regardless of whether they are palliative or not. I have also learnt a lot about the many factors that influence a patient s experience of pain and their experience of illness in general. A patient s journey is not only defined by neuronal pathways, but by a multitude of other factors including their health and their ability to communicate with the staff who are caring for them. While this is something that I was aware of prior to this rotation, my experience in the Mary Potter Hospice has allowed me to see just how this manifests in real life. While there have been some cases that I have found more emotionally confronting and more difficult to grapple with than others, my experience has not been at all defined by these challenging situations. While there is of course much sadness in palliative care, there is also much beauty in being able to comfort those who are in need, and this has been my overall experience of palliative care. It is a great privilege to be a part of someone s life during such a difficult and vulnerable period, and it is something very special to be able to provide relief and comfort during such times. My time in the Mary Potter Hospice has certainly highlighted this to me, and I know that I will take the knowledge and skills that I have gained with me into my medical practice in the future. To read Sophia s reflection in full visit marypotter.org.au. The First Laugh Admirer: - Herr Mozart, I am thinking of writing symphonies. Can you give me any suggestions as to how to get started? Mozart: - A symphony is a very complex musical form. Perhaps you should begin with some simple lieder and work your way up to a symphony. Admirer: -But Herr Mozart you were writing symphonies when you were 8 years old. Mozart: - But I never asked anybody how. 2 Pro Fide Pro Utilitate Hominum

To all members of the To all members of the South Australia Priory It is with much pride that I accept your trust in me to be your Prior following the retirement of Prof John Jackson KJSJ. I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve you even though I know it will be a steep learning curve. Thankfully, the Priory Administrative Council is so experienced, willing and able that my task will be all the more enjoyable. My aim will be to consolidate the work begun by Bailiff Vic Techritz, continued by his successor Bailiff Roger Goldsworthy and more recently by Chevalier Prof Jackson. All have been outstanding leaders of the Order. In the army, and more recently in the RSL, I have been known as an ideas man, and I hope that a similar feeling will be engendered in our Priory, where it is my ambition to consolidate our numbers and our role as a unique Order of Chivalry. We are not a club or an association which can be joined, but a world wide ancient ecumenical Order which selects its Brothers and Sisters from those whose standing and selflessness, in and toward the community, sets them apart. Many years ago when I was asked if I would like to join, I was reassured by a friend who was already a member who explained it to me and declared that they are a great bunch of guys This has indeed proved to be so. A more diverse group of highly regarded Christian men and women one could not expect to meet. We range over all professions, and are indeed a band of Brothers and Sisters. This family camaraderie must surely be similar to that enjoyed by our predecessors in Rhodes and Malta in the 1500 s. Our successful monthly meetings, lunches, and members talks, will continue to educate and strengthen us. At our recent Investiture we welcomed into our Priory Chevalier Reverend David Noble from Perth - Chevalier John Harley: a barrister and Notary - Chevalier Marcus la Vincente: a solicitor and life member of the Mary Potter foundation - Chevalier Prof. Michael Miller AO : an engineer and - Chevalier John Seaton; a mechanical engineer. Congratulations are also in order for the promotions of Chevalier Dr Harold Lane OAM KGSJ: our devoted Hospitaller, Chevalier Dr Jeff Nicholas KJSJ :our Newsletter Editor and Chevalier Prof Ralph Martins of Perth: a world authority on Alzheimers Disease. Finally, I cannot let this moment pass without saying how sad we were at the passing of one of our brothers in St John, The Honorable Ian Wilson earlier this year. St Peter s Cathedral was packed, and 32 members of the Order provided a solemn but impressive and colourful final guard of honour. Pro Fide Pro Utilitate Hominum Col. 4 The Hon. Ian Bonython Cameron Wilson A.M. KSJ inherited a family tradition of community service, not only from his parents Sir Keith and Lady Wilson but also from other family members of earlier generations who included Adelaide Lord Mayors, a State Premier, a Chief Justice, the first headmaster of St Peter s College, the first Rector of St Matthews Anglican Church, and owner-editor of The Advertiser and benefactors to several important South Australian institutions. Ian s education progressed from St Peter s College into a Bachelor of Law from the University of Adelaide, then as 1955 SA Rhodes Scholar, a Bachelor of Civil Law, Magdalen College, Oxford University. Following his recent death Ian was described by a fellow student at Oxford as a Rhodes scholar in the mould that Cecil Rhodes intended. After admission as a Barrister at Gray s Inn, London, he returned to a legal career in Adelaide with Genders, Wilson and Partners. He married Mary Scales who had grown up in Clare, with whom he shared 52 loving years and who tirelessly supported all of his endeavours. Having been the founding President of the Young Liberal Movement in South Australia in 1951, in 1966 Ian was elected Liberal Member for Sturt in the House of Representatives, serving Adelaide s eastern and north eastern suburbs. Defeated but undaunted in 1969 during the following three years Ian s sense of duty, commitment and integrity inspired a massive grassroots campaign using then cutting edge technology. With the slogan Ian Wilson is a helluva good 4 Pro Fide Pro Utilitate Hominum Our late brother Chevalier Hon. Ian Bonython Cameron Wilson A.M. KSJ, LLB, BCL(Oxon) - bloke in the face of the nationwide swing to Labor installing the Whitlam Government, he regained Sturt with a strong pro-liberal swing in In the Fraser Liberal Coalition Government he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, , Minister for Home Affairs and Environment ; and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and assisting the Minister for Social Security Ian also served on many parliamentary committees as well as holding office in the Liberal Party (SA Division) organisational wing. His contributions, especially in the Coalition parliamentary party room, on issues related to social security, the ageing, taxation, finance and the environment always commanded colleague s attention. The vicissitudes of politics ended his Parliamentary vocation in 1993 but in no way diminished is community and charitable service. Roles as Commissioner for Charitable Funds for SA, Vice President of the Good Neighbour Council, Chairman of St Matthews Homes for the Aged, Chairman of the May Gibbs Children s Literature Trust and Nutcote Trust Proprietary Limited, Chairman of the Rosemary Foundation for Memory Support, Chairman of the Burnside Trust and Chairman of the Northeast Community Nursing Home together with continuing Liberal Party organisational involvement reflected his strong sense of community, which was recognised with the award of a Member of the Order of Australia in With his ethos of making things better whether in family life, politics, church or community organisations, Ian refused to be constrained by inadequate resources and would always find ways of meeting needs, even extending to the whimsical, repetitive, time-consuming, fixing the pump at his Fleurieu farm, seen by family members as an allegory of his life. Proud of his Cornish heritage, Ian succeeded his mother as patron of the Cornish Association of SA. A committed Christian, Ian died at his Burnside home on April 2, 2013, confident that he was on a great journey to a better life. He was farewelled in St Peter s Cathedral. Mary survives him along with their four sons Kieth, Richard, James and Nigel and seven grandchildren. Grant Chapman

5 For Faith and for Service to Humanity Sovereign Council Valletta, Malta 6 April 2013 The biennial Sovereign Council meeting began at 9:30 am on Saturday 6 April, 2013, at the headquarters of the Order, 223 St Paul Street, Valletta. Delegates were seated at tables arranged in a U shape, with the Chairman Lieutenant Grand Master, Bailiff Michel Bohe centrally placed, in view of all, behind the cloth bearing the Maltese Cross. Our red mantles were worn by all but removed after devotions. Following the usual preliminaries, the main business began with a report from the Lieutenant Grand Master, followed by a report from the Grand Commander Paul Borg. The latter included financial statements 2011/2012, the budget for 2012/2013, and a discussion on the International Manual which is nearing publication. Business transacted by the Petit Conseil ( little council ) since the last Sovereign Council Meeting in March 2011 was also tabled by Grand Commander Paul Borg for final approval of the Sovereign Council. All items were approved, including one on Promotions which reads (a) Promotions are to be kept to a minimum and are to be awarded to that particular recipient not as a reward for past good works towards the Order/Grand Priory/Priory nor as an expression of Thank You but solely as an encouragement for the continuance of the good works already performed. I include this item and its wording, because this is all new to us. Grand Marshal Roberto Volpe produced a dress code, including collarets according to rank, braids on collars of mantles, etc., Chevalier Brian North has already circulated this to members of our Priory Activity Reports followed from the Grand Priories and Priories as follows: The Russian Grand Priory of Malta - Italian Priory, Priory of Sicily, Priory of Tasmania, Priory of Ireland, Priory of St Alexander Nevski, Malta and its dependent Commanderies as well as the Grand Priory of Australasia-South Australian Priory, and the Victorian Priory. These were given individually by Grand Prior Royce Pepin, Prior John Jackson and Prior Peter Wiltshire. Reports from the Grand Priory of the Low Countries-Priory of Low Countries and Priory of Flanders, Priory of Switzerland, Nordic Priory, Priory of Austria, Priory of Eastern Canada, Americas Priory, Priory of the Pacific, and the Priory of St Eskil followed. The Sovereign Council concluded around 5 pm, when we adjourned for a Gala Dinner. On Sunday a very successful Ecumenical service was held at world headquarters. It was organized and managed by our own Archdeacon John Collas. Other dinners, tours, etc organized for delegates and visitors by Grand Commander Paul Borg followed. I thoroughly recommend to members that they include the Sovereign Council Meeting in their travel plans for Outgoing Prior Chevalier Professor John Jackson

Charitable works ofthe Nordic Priory The Nordic Priory consists of members from Denmark, Finland and Norway and is working closely together with the Priory St. Eskil, which has its members in Sweden. I have been asked very kindly to give a small presentation of the type of humanitarian work being performed here, and since it is not possible to do so in a short form, I shall confine myself to the work in my own Commandery of Aros. I will leave it to the members of the other Commanderies to give their reports as they see fit. There is one in Denmark called Dagmar, one in Finland and one soon to be created in Norway whose members have left the Prince Karl Vladimir administration and who are joining the Malta Order just like you did in Adelaide. Hans Melgaard Anderson Aarhus, Denmark Peter Gabrielson, Bailiff, Lt. Grand Commander In our Danish Commandery of Aros our Commander is Hans Melgaard Andersen, who has for a number of years had close connections to personal friends in Montenegro, recently having become an independent state out of the former Yugoslavia. Here there are kept in the National Museum the two most important relics of the Order, namely the Icon allegedly painted by the Evangelist St. Luke and showing the Holy Virgin Mary, and the right arm of St. John the Baptist. Now, the President of the Museum, together with ten other prominent Montenegrinians are seeking membership of our Order. This has now been accepted and they will be received in an Investiture on the 28th of September this year. This will take place within our Commandery of Aros, and immediately afterwards the Montenegrinians will form their own Commandery directly under Malta and with the Montenegrinian Archbishop as Protector. Our Hospitaller John Becker has through many years been in charge of the National Collection of funds for the Danish Refugee Aid in his own Municipality in Northern Jutland, one of the 98 Danish Municipalities. Last year he and a number of voluntary assistants generated a contribution of 10,000 Euros. Our Cantor Teddy Teirup who is a renowned concert pianist has on two occasions given concerts in connection with the anniversaries of Frederic Chopin and Franz von Liszt. Monetary surpluses from these events helped raise funds for UNICEF s work with water projects in Burma. The Commandery is also part of a project in the larger Priory where we collect the aluminium lock rings from beer- and juice cans, which are sold to be used for surgery purposes in Thailand. They are very useful for medical operations after land mine accidents and the like. Trivial as this might seem, it did provide 930 Euros last year and it is still expanding. It might be worthwhile for other Priories to take up such an initiative. My wife Bodil and I who are Chancellor and Treasurer respectively in our Commandery have for many years donated as much as 2000 Euros per year from our Commandery funds to aid a Christmas appeal for needy members of our Roman Catholic Parish in our home town of Aarhus. This is administered by our Parish Priest the Jesuit Father Herbert Krawczyk who is associated with the Order. Apart from our work with the Order we are both part of the administration of a Foundation which has for many years given 150,000 Euros from an inheritance which is donated to medical research, especially cancer and heart diseases. Also in the same field, one of the members of our Commandery who is living in Poland(where we have two members), Professor Irena Norska has for more than 20 years been a highly praised and a valued expert in the fight against diseases deriving from the heavy pollution in the Polish region of Silesia. Her work is especially directed at children. She is a highly respected lady, and although now over 80 years, is still very active. She is a Commander of Grace in our Order. 8 St John Investiture 2013 The Investiture of the new Knights of St. John was held this year on Friday, June 21, in our Conventual Church, Christ Church, North Adelaide. At 6:00 pm the sound of the fanfare on the trumpet rang out, and the procession of Knights and Dames trooped in led by the Piper: Chevalier The Hon John Oswald, playing Highland Cathedral. The participants in the service and the Donats took their places then we all sang the Australian National Anthem and the service continued with the first hymn All people that on earth do dwell. The lessons were read by Chevalier the Vice Prior, Chevalier Max Lemon; and the Prior, Chevalier Prof. John Jackson. These readings were followed by a thanksgiving for the service of the retiring Prior, Chevalier Prof. John Jackson, and the installation of the new Prior, Chevalier Col. Dr Brenton Mollison, which were conducted by the Grand Prior Chevalier Royce Pepin. Another rousing fanfare introduced the investiture of the five Donats: John Harley, Marcus La Vincente, Michael Miller, David Noble and John Seaton. There followed more prayers and the hymn Lord of all power, I give you my will, the Benediction, then after another stirring fanfare, Chevalier John Oswald led the procession out playing beautifully on the pipes Will Ye Nay Come Back Again? The Investiture Dinner was once again held this year in the Adelaide Pavilion Restaurant on South Terrace. Chevalier Robert Hill-Ling did an excellent job as the Master of Ceremony, keeping us entertained through the evening with his wit and repartee. The food was once again good this year, and if you were pretty quick you could even get a glass of wine before having to pay for a bottle yourself. The new Knights were introduced and towards the end of the evening people got up and mingled around talking to others, which made it a most enjoyable night. The sessions will cover emergency procedures for an adult, child or baby, with CPR training manikins available for each size. To ensure adequate opportunities for everyone to practise, each session will be limited to a maximum of 20 participants. A detailed circular will be issued soon by the Priory Secretary, asking interested members to respond to him if they wish to book attendance at one of the sessions.

The Langue Banners of Allemagne The Treasurer, or Grand Baili, was leader of the Tongue of Allemagne, now Germany. He was the Accountant of the Order s finances. He was also overseer of livestock rearing, ie poultry, swine etc. The Grand Baili was later responsible for the castles of the mighty estate. Today the Grand Treasurer is Bailiff Paul Borg of Valletta. At the fall of Rhodes in 1522, the emblem of Allemagne was shown with a one headed eagle, but by the Siege of Malta in 1565, the estates had expanded considerably and the eagle was shown, as in our banner with two heads. St Elisabeth Our religious image in this edition is of St Elisabeth who is depicted in a stained glass window of Christ Church, Yankalilla, South Australia. The image behind her is of Yankalilla Bay which stretches south toward Rapid Bay, Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island. The theme encapsulates both the charitable nature of St Elisabeth s works and the fulsome cornucopia of the Fleurieu Peninsular. It shows how we are blessed in so many ways. St Elisabeth s biography is quite brief. She was the third child of King Andreas II of Hungary and Queen Gertrude of Andechs-Meran and as a young married woman her husband Ludwig was called to the Diet in 1226 where he promises to take up the cross with Frederick II. Elisabeth was left in charge of Ludwig s domain. Showing great initiative and a strong sense of Christian compassion she immediately set about administering to the sick and needy in the kingdom. She founded a hospital in Eisenach and set about distributing food to nine-hundred people daily. The next year Ludwig IV and Frederick II set out for Palestine but unfortunately Ludwig St Elisabeth Christ Church, Yankalilla died from the plague en route leaving Elisabeth vulnerable to some powerful jealousies in Eisenach. Her charitable works for the poor and downtrodden were viewed with suspicion so she moved to Marburg where she joined the Franciscans as a Tertiary. According to Voragine s Legenda Aurea (2:311), money from her dowry enabled her to build another hospital. She died prematurely at the age of twenty four, some say because of the religious fervour and the self-mortification expected of her. St. Elisabeth s brief biography is devoid of the kinds of events that seem to alter the course of history and gives little reason to suggest why she would endure the way she did. However, it is her character that continues to speak to believers. When Dr. Eduard Schick, Bishop of Fulda from 1974 to 1982, began negotiations with the Vatican to have his diocese allow St. Elisabeth as a second patron saint, he did so because of her charity. Elisabeth is important because of her love for her fellow man and her self-sacrifice. Undoubtedly, such charity is the saint s ultimate appeal, and is borne out in her hagiography, her iconography, and the many publications about her.
