1 Contributors Craig L. Blomberg is Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary in Littleton, Colorado. He holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland; MA from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois, and BA from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. He has authored thirteen books and coauthored or coedited eight others, with over 130 articles and essays in print. His major publications are The Historical Reliability of the Gospels; Interpreting the Parables; Matthew (New American Commentary); 1 Corinthians (NIV Application Commentary); Jesus and the Gospels: An Introduction and Survey; Neither Poverty nor Riches: A Biblical Theology of Possessions; The Historical Reliability of John s Gospel; Preaching the Parables; Contagious Holiness: Jesus Meals with Sinners; From Pentecost to Patmos: An Introduction and Survey of Acts-Revelation; James (Zondervan Exegetical Commentary), with Mariam J. Kamell; A Handbook of New Testament Exegesis, with Jennifer Foutz Markley; and Christians in an Age of Wealth: A Biblical Theology of Stewardship for Life. He is a member of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Institute of Biblical Research, the Tyndale Fellowship, the Evangelical Theological Society, and the Committee on Bible Translation for the NIV. Darrell L. Bock is Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas. He also serves as Executive Director of Cultural Engagement for the seminary s Center for Christian Leadership. His special fields of study involve hermeneutics, the use of the Old Testament in the New, Luke-Acts, the historical Jesus, gospel studies, and the integration of theology and culture. He has served on the board of Chosen People Ministries for almost a decade and also serves on the board at Wheaton College. He is a graduate of the University of Texas (BA), Dallas Theological Seminary (ThM), and the University of Aberdeen (PhD). He has had four annual stints of postdoctoral study at the University of Tübingen, the second through fourth as an Alexander von Humboldt scholar ( , , , and ). He also serves as elder emeritus at Trinity Fellowship Church in Richardson, Texas, is editor at large for Christianity Today, served as President of the Evangelical Theological Society for ix

He is married to Sally and has two daughters (both married), a son, and two grandsons. John Dominic Crossan is Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at DePaul University and former co-chair of the Jesus Seminar ( ). He is one of the most influential New Testament scholars in contemporary scholarship and has authored more than twenty bestselling books on the historical Jesus, early Christianities, and the historical Paul. He has authored many books on Jesus and Paul, including The Historical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant (1991), Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography (1994), The Birth of Christianity (1998), God & Empire: Jesus Against Rome Then and Now (2007). He also coauthored Excavating Jesus (2001) and In Search of Paul: How Jesus s Apostle Opposed Rome s Empire with God s Kingdom (2004), both with archaeologist Jonathan L. Reed. He has lectured to lay and scholarly audiences across the United States as well as in Ireland and England, Scandinavia and Finland, Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, Japan, and South Africa. He has been interviewed on more than two hundred radio stations, including National Public Radio s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. He has also been interviewed on numerous television shows such as ABC s PrimeTime, Peter Jennings Reporting, and Nightline, CBS s Early Show and 48 Hours, NBC s Dateline, and Fox News s The O Reilly Factor, and on cable programs such as A&E, History, Discovery, and the National Geographic Channel. Craig A. Evans is Payzant Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Acadia Divinity College and Acadia University. Before his appointment at Acadia in 2002, he taught for twenty-one years at Trinity Western University, where he founded the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute. He has a BA degree from Claremont McKenna College, MDiv from Western Seminary, MA and PhD from Claremont Graduate University, and DHabil from Károli Gáspár Református University in Budapest. He has served as editor-in-chief of the Bulletin for Biblical Research and has served on the editorial boards of Dead Sea Discoveries, Journal of Biblical Literature, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, New Testament Studies, Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus, and others. His recent books include Matthew (Cambridge), Jesus and His World: The Archaeological Evidence (SPCK/Westminster John Knox), Guide to the Dead Sea Scrolls (B&H), Ancient Texts for New Testament Studies: A Guide to the Background Literature (Hendrickson), Jesus and the Ossuaries (Baylor), and, with N. T. Wright, Jesus,

3 Contributors xi the Final Days (SPCK/Westminster John Knox). Professor Evans has appeared in programs and documentaries that have aired on History Channel, BBC, and Dateline NBC. Evans and his wife Ginny live in Kentville, Nova Scotia, located in historic Annapolis Valley, and have two grown daughters and a grandson. Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Science. She is also Affiliated Professor, Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Holding a BA from Smith College and MA and PhD from Duke University, she has honorary doctorates from the University of Richmond, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, the University of South Carolina Upstate, Drury University, and Christian Theological Seminary. She has held office in the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, and the Association of Jewish Studies. Her recent books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus (HarperOne), The Meaning of the Bible: What the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament Can Teach Us (coauthored with Douglas Knight; HarperOne), the edited Historical Jesus in Context (Princeton), and the thirteen-volume edited Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Writings (Continuum). With Marc Brettler, she edited the Jewish Annotated New Testament (Oxford). A self-described Yankee Jewish feminist, Professor Levine is a member of Congregation Sherith Israel, an Orthodox synagogue in Nashville, Tennessee, although she is often quite unorthodox. Robert J. Miller is the Rosenberger Professor of Religious Studies and Christian Thought at Juniata College in Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses in Biblical Studies, World Religions, and the Philosophy of Religion. He received an MA in Religious Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara and MA in Philosophy and PhD in Religion (New Testament) from Claremont Graduate University. He is the editor of The Complete Gospels (4th ed., 2010). His other publications include The Jesus Seminar and Its Critics (1999), Born Divine: The Births of Jesus and Other Sons of God (2003), and, with Arthur Dewey, The Complete Gospel Parallels (2012). He has served since 2004 on the program committee for the Historical Jesus Section of the Society of Biblical Literature. He is the editor of The Fourth R, a magazine sponsored by the Jesus Seminar for general readers. Bob has been a visiting professor at the Stockholm

He is also committed to adult education and has made over 250 appearances for various religious groups all across North America. Stephen J. Patterson is the George H. Atkinson Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. From 1988 to 2010, he was Professor of New Testament at Eden Seminary in Saint Louis. His most recent book is Beyond the Passion: Rethinking the Death and Life of Jesus (Fortress, 2004). He is also the author of The God of Jesus: The Historical Jesus and the Search for Meaning (Trinity, 1998) and The Gospel of Thomas and Jesus (Polebridge, 1993) and coauthor of The Q Thomas Reader (Polebridge, 1990), The Search for Jesus (Smithsonian Institution and Biblical Archaeology Society, 1994), The Fifth Gospel: The Gospel of Thomas Comes of Age (Trinity, 1998), and The Apocalyptic Jesus: A Debate (Polebridge, 2001). His many essays and reviews have appeared in the Harvard Theological Review, Journal of Biblical Literature, Journal of Religion, Journal of the American Academy of Religion, and Theology Today, among other publications both professional and popular. Myrick C. Shinall Jr. is a PhD student in the New Testament and Early Christianity program in the Vanderbilt University Graduate Department of Religion and a resident physician in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He holds degrees from Harvard University (BA), Vanderbilt Divinity School (MDiv), and Vanderbilt Medical School (MD). He is a recipient of the H. William Scott Jr. Memorial Scholarship to fund his research. He has published work in several medical journals and has served as a guest editor for an issue of Virtual Mentor: American Medical Association Journal of Ethics on Religion, Patients, and Medical Ethics. His primary research interest area is in issues of sickness, healing, and the body in New Testament and early Christianity and their impact on the contemporary experience of illness and death. Robert B. Stewart (PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is Professor of Philosophy and Theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he is Greer-Heard Professor of Faith and Culture. He is editor of The Resurrection of Jesus: John Dominic Crossan and N. T. Wright in Dialogue (Fortress Press, 2006); Intelligent Design: William A. Dembski and Michael Ruse in Dialogue (Fortress Press, 2007); The Future of Atheism: Alister McGrath and Daniel Dennett in Dialogue (Fortress Press, 2008); and The Reliability of the

5 Contributors xiii New Testament: Bart D. Ehrman and Daniel B. Wallace in Dialogue (Fortress Press, 2011). A contributor to the Cambridge Dictionary of Christianity, he has published articles or book reviews in numerous journals. David Wenham (MA, Cambridge; PhD, Manchester) is Lecturer in New Testament Studies at Trinity College Bristol and Research Fellow at Bristol University (United Kingdom). Previously, he taught in Wycliffe Hall in the University of Oxford. He was until recently chairman of the New Testament Group of the Tyndale Fellowship for Biblical and Theological Research. His areas of specialization include the synoptic problem and gospel origins, the Jesus-Paul question, and the Sermon on the Mount. He was Director of the Gospels Research Project of Tyndale House in Cambridge, and editor or joint editor of the Gospel Perspectives series (JSOT, 1979 ). He is author of The Rediscovery of Jesus Eschatological Discourse: Studies in the History of Gospel Traditions (JSOT, 1984), The Parables of Jesus: Pictures of Revolution (Hodder/ InterVarsity USA, 1989), Paul: Follower of Jesus or Founder of Christianity? (Eerdmans, 1995), Exploring the New Testament, vol. 1, Introducing the Gospels and Acts, jointly authored with Steve Walton (SPCK, 2001), Paul and Jesus: The True Story (SPCK/Eerdmans, 2002), and Did St Paul Get Jesus Right? The Gospel According to Paul (Lion, 2009). He has published widely in journals, Festschrifts, and other volumes, and is currently editing a volume on Preaching the New Testament (InterVarsity). Ben Witherington III (MDiv, Gordon Conwell; PhD, University of Durham, United Kingdom) is Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary and on the doctoral faculty at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Witherington has also taught at Ashland Theological Seminary, Vanderbilt University, Duke Divinity School, and Gordon-Conwell. He has written over thirty books, including Jesus the Sage and Jesus, Paul and the End of the World, plus a host of commentaries. Two of his books, The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, were selected as top biblical-studies works by Christianity Today. He also writes for many church and scholarly publications and is a frequent contributor to the Beliefnet website. Along with many interviews on radio networks across the country, Witherington has been seen on the History Channel, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, the Discovery Channel, A&E, and the PAX Network.
