May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. Psalm 67: 3-4 It has been another year of God s blessings at EduDeo Ministries. It is a privilege to serve an amazing Risen King and an honour to bring the Gospel to the nations through Christ-centred education. John Piper states, Mission exists because worship doesn t. Our vision is to see every community transformed by the Gospel, so that every single nation will be glad and sing for joy. There is so much brokenness in the world. Our role is to be ambassadors in the ministry of reconciliation of making all things new. We believe education from a Biblical worldview results in this transformation. This year has seen many successes. We continued our work in Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Belize and Zambia and have seen increased momentum in Ethiopia and South Sudan. There are many opportunities to shape these nations with the living Word of God. We have also increased our partnerships across Canada, deepening our relationship with Canadian Christian Schools to give them an opportunity to bless students and teachers internationally and to develop a healthy view of mission and global development in the hearts and minds of young Canadians. Still relatively new into our identity as EduDeo Ministries, this key transition strengthens our calling and sharpens our focus. We have raised the bar professionally as an organization, striving to do all things well, reflecting our heavenly Father, and out of a deep love for those we re serving. Thank you for partnering with us! Join us as we celebrate the past and look ahead to the future. May the nations be glad, Hank de Jong, Executive Director PAGE 3

Education is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality and lays a foundation for sustained economic growth. The World Bank states that, Among human capital investments, education stands out as critically linked to poverty reduction and improved productivity. 6 BELIZE THE COUNTRY Belize is a small Caribbean country, rich in ecology and diverse in culture. The country s history of hurricanes has played a devastating role in its economic situation, as has the history of slavery in colonization. Education is government sponsored, but in rural areas many still lack access to schooling or do not continue to high school. PARTNERING WITH PCSB The PCSB (Presbyterian Church Schools in Belize) believes in the vital role of Christian schools in strengthening the church and family, in preparing the next generation of leaders, and in transforming culture. Current enrolment in PCSB s schools is around 1,000 students, of whom 70% are non-believers, providing an excellent opportunity to present the message of the Gospel to these children and their families. One of the primary goals of PCSB is to reach greater numbers of children in Belize through Christ-centred education, especially in rural communities where access to quality education is limited. Short-term goals include: recruiting, retaining, and investing in teachers to provide long-term stability for students; financially assisting low income families with tuition costs, textbooks, and school supplies; and providing Biblically-integrated worldview training for teachers. HIGHLIGHTS FROM Sent almost $200,000 to Belize this past fiscal year; Arranged for 8 HANDS Teams to travel to 5 different Christian schools, resulting in substantial funds raised for various building projects, as well as to pay for indigenous workers, lodging and meals, which helps the local economy; Provided over $25,000 in tuition subsidies for low-income families; Facilitated the first Walking Together training seminar in Belize through volunteer educators Jim Vreugdenhil and Bill de Jager, visioning with school and church leaders to determine how to help PAGE 6

their teachers and students grow in an understanding and practice of a Biblical worldview; Helped Cornerstone High School reduce their deficit; Encouraged and supported educational leaders to network with other educators in their region through the REEDUCA Conference in Nicaragua; Assisted in the leadership and management of PCSB by supporting the position of General Manager, held by Reverend Alvaro Pott. In his latest report, the General Manager, Alvaro, stated: Once again we can proudly say, thus far has the Lord in his faithfulness carried us. Praise the LORD for how he is working in the Belizean Christian schools! DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS FOR BELIZE Organizational Capacity Walking Together HANDS Logistics Miss Leydi, a teacher at a Christian school in Belize, is described as having the love of Jesus in her heart. She uses creative teaching methods to instill in her students a love of learning and joy in God, His love and His world! Her dedication to excellence is a beautiful example of the impact teachers are making! School Support HANDS Construction Projects PAGE 7

Saniela, a Grade 8 student at La Esperanza, suffered a tragic accident that took both her legs. Saniela is a good student who works hard and is well-liked by her classmates. Her beautiful spirit and quiet determination to do her best shine through as a testament to God s grace. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC THE COUNTRY The Dominican Republic is the 2 nd largest Caribbean nation. Unemployment, government corruption, and inconsistent service of electricity plagues this country. There is extreme income inequality, as 10% of the people enjoy over 50% of the wealth. Although primary education is free and compulsory, very little funding is put towards schools, resulting in poor facilities and accessibility, especially in rural areas. Many children drop out of school by age 12 because of financial and accessibility restrictions, and only 10% of those enrolled in secondary school graduate. PARTNERING WITH COCREF COCREF (Colegio Cristianos Reformados) is a community of Christian schools formed to reach the most neglected children in the Dominican Republic with the Gospel. It serves about 3,700 students in 16 schools, many of which are located in bateys to serve Haitian immigrants who don t have access to education. One of COCREF s primary goals is to reach greater numbers of children in the Dominican Republic through Christcentred education in impoverished communities. Short-term goals include: developing high-quality, Biblically-integrated curriculum; recruiting, retaining, and investing in experienced teachers to provide long-term stability for students; providing enhanced learning environments through improved access to computers, libraries, science laboratories, and vocational training; and financially assisting qualifying parents who are unable to afford tuition costs, textbooks, and school supplies for their children. PAGE 8

HIGHLIGHTS FROM Sent over $160,000 to the Dominican this past year; Arranged 5 HANDS Teams, resulting in funds raised for a major building project at La Esperanza Christian School, as well as to pay for indigenous workers, lodging and meals, which helps the local economy; Participated in a joint partner evaluation of COCREF; Provided over $23,000 in tuition subsidies for lowincome families; Facilitated Walking Together training through volunteer educators Gary VanArragon and Linda Geerts, working with teachers to understand how to implement a foundational Biblical worldview for teaching the Social Studies curriculum assigned by the Dominican government; Supported the Excelencia Program, an indigenous-led effort to provide training, mentoring, continuing education and professional development opportunities to Christian educators in the DR. The latest COCREF Report celebrated, By the grace of our Lord Christ Jesus, we have had the opportunity to keep up the hard work and the mission that the Creator has put in our hands. The Holy Spirit gives us the privilege to help with the integral transformation of the children in vulnerable communities, guiding them through Christian education to know God and to develop their skills and talents to serve the community. 10 NICARAGUA THE COUNTRY Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America, is home to 6 million. There is cultural richness and diversity, but also a lot of historical political unrest and economic crisis. About 80% of the people live on less than $2/day. Elementary education is free and compulsory, but is not enforced. In rural areas, many don t attend due to lack of schools or because they need to work. Of all Central American countries, Nicaragua has the lowest primary school enrolment rate and the highest dropout rate. PARTNERING WITH ACECEN ACECEN (Association of Evangelical Christian Education Centers of Nicaragua) s purpose is to promote the development and improvement of each school in a comprehensive manner, in order to prepare citizens for quality professional excellence based on biblical principles so they become agents of transformation in society. One of ACECEN s primary goals is to reach children in rural areas where no educational options are available. Their short-term goals include: recruiting, retaining, and investing in experienced teachers to provide long-term stability for students; assisting those unable to afford tuition and supplies; strengthening relationships between Christian schools; and providing enhanced learning with access to technology. HIGHLIGHTS FROM Sent over $375,000 to Nicaragua this past fiscal year; Arranged for 9 HANDS Teams to travel to 4 Christian schools, resulting in funds raised for building projects, as well as to pay for indigenous workers, lodging and meals, which helps the local economy; Raised almost $20,000 for additional school construction projects; Provided over $5,000 in tuition subsidies for low income families; Supported the work of the Nehemiah Center in equipping local leaders with a Biblical worldview; PAGE 10

Facilitated Walking Together training through volunteer educators Robert Koole and Tena Siebenga-Valstar, working with ACECEN facilitators in developing a Biblical worldview for Social Studies curriculum; Supported the work of ACECEN in providing training, mentoring, continuing education and other professional development opportunities to Christian educators; Assisted with training in computers through the work of RedProCom, a network of Christian teachers from ACECEN schools that focuses on technology; Strengthened relationships between Christian schools and their supporting communities through the Nehemiah Center s Agents of Transformation program; Employed a Nicaraguan staff person to facilitate the work of EduDeo Ministries in the Nicaraguan Christian schools. 12 Isaac, an orphan living with his grandmother, has been able to attend school because of a CCAP scholarship, made possible by support from EduDeo Ministries! He has been deeply touched by this opportunity and encourages his friends to `work hard and still have hope. ZAMBIA THE COUNTRY Zambia is a landlocked country in Africa. Almost half the population is in the few urban areas. Most rural Zambians are subsistence farmers and many children do not attend school because of distance. Unemployment is a serious problem and 68% of Zambians live below the national poverty line. Many families suffer from HIV/AIDS, and orphans live with elderly grandmothers or extended family. Government sponsored education goes to Grade 7, although many students are still unable to purchase required uniforms and supplies. Beyond that, most do not attain high school education because of tuition fees. Lack of facilities, of transportation and of teachers greatly affects the quality of education available. PARTNERING WITH CCAP EduDeo Ministries partners with the Education Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). Their network of 25 schools is mostly in Eastern Zambia and their vision is to provide education to children who are not living with their parents because of poverty and those orphaned due to HIV/ AIDS. The low enrolment of high school students is of great concern to CCAP. This is because there are not enough high schools, only 335 in the nation compared with over 4,500 primary schools. Some of the primary goals of CCAP include: providing Biblicallyintegrated worldview training for teachers; constructing and improving student dormitories, laboratories, classrooms, and other facilities; educating communities on the importance of educating females; and building awareness of HIV/AIDS. PAGE 12

HIGHLIGHTS FROM Sent over $100,000 to Zambia this past fiscal year; Arranged for a HANDS Team to work on Kabinda High School, resulting in funds raised for the building project, as well as to pay for indigenous workers, lodging and meals, which helps the local economy; Raised over $25,000 for a construction project at Mphamba Christian School, building new classrooms; Provided over $3,000 in tuition subsidies for low-income families; Facilitated Walking Together training through volunteer educators Jules de Jager and Elco Vander Grift, working with facilitators and school leaders to implement a Biblical worldview in their school curriculum; Supported professional development and networking opportunities for Zambian educators. 14 Jackson is a teacher who is attending the Training of Trainers course in South Sudan, led by EduDeo s Walking Together volunteer educators. The impact on my personal and work life is drastic! I share with others the importance of love, serving Almighty God, and being His image-bearer. OTHER INITIATIVES INTERNATIONAL Executive Director, Hank de Jong, was honoured to be invited to take part in the ACSI-Africa Roundtable in August 2012, joining together with 150 delegates from 35 countries to discuss the immense potential and growth of Christian education in Africa. Walking Together teacher training took place in January 2013, building on the foundation which began the year prior in exploring the fundamentals of a Biblical worldview and how it impacts the classroom. Executive Director, Hank de Jong, was invited as a guest speaker at the Ethiopia Roundtable in January He spoke from a Canadian perspective on the impact of Biblically-centred quality education. A HANDS Team travelled to Ghana to continue work on His Majesty s Christian School. Its vision is to become a model of Christ-centred education for this nation. Walking Together Director, John Vanderhoek, attended the annual REEDUCA Conference in Nicaragua, networking with educators from across Central America. CANADA As a result of receiving a grant from Stronger Together, EduDeo commissioned Robert Koole to visit our core partners to develop an evaluation tool that will monitor the effectiveness of our teacher training projects. Road2Hope: Hamilton was an incredible day of many coming together to raise funds for and awareness of our PAGE 14

ministry. A record number of participants also resulted in a record amount raised: over $86,000! Our partnership with Promise Keepers-Canada continues to be a blessing, encouraging Christian men to grow in a life of faith and service through short-term missions. The 1st Annual Outlook Summit provided faith-based business leaders, organizational decision makers and entrepreneurs with hope and insight for work and life. Key contacts from our international partners in Belize and the Dominican Republic joined us in Canada, giving our Canadian supporters the opportunity to meet with them and listen to their stories of what God is doing in their communities. Our International Partnership Director, Tim Bootsma, attended the COSIM (Coalition on the Support of Indigenous Ministries) Conference to learn more on how to develop healthy cross-cultural relationships. Canadian Christian Schools: 6 schools participated in R2H: School Edition across Canada, raising over $14,000 to impact schools worldwide; 18 Canadian Christian schools took the initiative to fundraise for EduDeo projects, totalling over $11,000; 3 schools are connected through the School2School Program with sister schools in Nicaragua and Belize, developing understandings and relationships that are a mutual blessing to all involved! EduDeo extends our deepest appreciation to our volunteers, whether part of a HANDS Team, hosting HANDS teams, as part of our Walking Together program or in other capacities! Thank you! Katelyn participated in the annual Road2Hope. She was also a summer student at EduDeo for 2 years and took this event across Canada by helping develop Road2Hope: School Edition! I run because I know how transformative it is to have a Christ-centred education. PAGE 15

PROJECTS THE BEAUTY OF MUTUAL BLESSINGS This next fiscal year is shaping up to be an exciting time of both continuing to strengthen our core partnerships, as well as to explore new ones! Our main goal is to enable the indigenous leadership in each country to impact their nation for Christ. We strive to, first and foremost, listen to our partners, finding out their visions and dreams for their schools and discerning where God is calling us to join them. A major theme that we are continually reminded of is mutual blessing. We are humbled by the relationships we have, both here in Canada and around the world. We realize that, as we work towards our mission and vision, we are not only accomplishing the Lord s work, but are in a state of learning and being blessed ourselves! As you peruse the project plans in the following pages, we ask that you lift these goals before our Lord, share them with your friends and family, and consider what role you are being called to fulfill. Whether you lead a HANDS Team, are a dedicated prayer warrior, become a Sponsor, volunteer your time or give financially, we are deeply grateful for your partnership. It is our prayer that EduDeo Ministries would always be: working towards the Redemption of all things; driven by a passion for Excellence; dedicated to Learning; committed to humbly serving through Partnership. * The following projects are commitments to our core partners. EduDeo is also involved in other initiatives. To learn more, contact us at info@edudeo.com or PAGE 16

SHARING THE GOSPEL MESSAGE Though a relatively small country, the possibility to make a significant difference is great. About 70% of the students that attend these schools are not from Christian homes, giving the teachers an incredible opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ through each and every subject! INVESTING IN LOCAL LEADERSHIP Continuing in our long-term partnership with the Presbyterian Church Schools of Belize (PCSB), this year s commitment focuses on investing in the indigenous leadership that is in place. Reverend Alvaro Pott has been making a tremendous impact as he leads and manages this network of Christian schools, ensuring that each school is running efficiently and with accountability. Another key focus in developing local leaders is through teacher training. Last year, we held an initial visioning seminar for Walking Together to evaluate the needs and desires of the Belizean schools and staff. This year, we will be returning to take the program to the next level, delving into what it means to have a Biblical worldview and ways to implement it into each subject! MORE THAN CONSTRUCTION HANDS Teams are a very special way to bless the schools in Belize, while also allowing Canadian Christians to experience a unique blessing. From raising funds for the project, to working alongside indigenous labourers, to worshipping with Belizean brothers and sisters in Christ, it is an experience that leaves a lasting imprint, in Belizeans and Canadians alike. edudeo.com/get-inspired/countries/belize Learn more at u IMPACT BELIZE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SCHOOLS YEAR ESTABLISHED: 1976 # OF SCHOOLS: 8 # OF STUDENTS: 1,000+ FUNDS NEEDED: $108,581 General Manager Position 12,600 Walking Together Training 6,850 Curriculum Development 2,100 REEDUCA Conference 1,050 School Support 23,100 HANDS Construction Projects 54,495 Other Building Projects 8,386 PAGE 17

Often, they would otherwise would not have access to any form of education at all! Bateys are usually so poor that it is often a major sacrifice for families to pay the token tuition fee of under $3 per month to send their children to school. This is why EduDeo is committed to providing tuition assistance, helping to offset what the cost of tuition normally would be. IMPLEMENTING A BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW Over the past several years, EduDeo Ministries has been sending volunteer Canadian educators to lead training sessions that examine how to implement a Biblical worldview into each subject while still using government required curriculum. These Walking Together seminars have proven to significantly impact how COCREF teachers run their classrooms and how the students learn about God and His world! Using this foundation given by the Walking Together program, COCREF has implemented Project Excelencia to further the training and mentoring within their network of schools. Key facilitators hold additional trainings at various schools throughout the year and ensure the concepts are practiced. 19 WORKING TOGETHER FOR TRANSFORMATION The Nehemiah Center is a community of national leaders and international missionaries working together to promote Gospel transformation through community development, spiritual discipleship, stewardship and local leadership. Over the years, they have found that one of the most effective ways to bring about lasting change is by providing training in quality education from an integral, Biblical perspective. This reality led to the formation of the Association of Evangelical Christian Education Centers of Nicaragua (ACECEN). Committed to a Biblical worldview, ACECEN provides effective indigenous leadership for about a hundred schools, providing them with a unifying vision and administrative direction. These trainings have been so successful that the Nicaraguan government has asked ACECEN to replicate them for the public system! The trainings have led to better school retention, faster literacy acquisition rates, and higher levels of school-family collaboration. Enrollment has increased by 13% at the schools where teachers are implementing the concepts learned in training. FOCUS AREAS Integration of a Biblical worldview in all subjects; Teacher training in administration, management & pedagogy; Strengthening schools through evaluations; Building relationships between schools & their communities; Organizational support; Servant leadership; Spiritual care. It is a large country, rich in natural resources. This wealth is one of the root causes of the several decades of war in the country. South Sudan is under-developed, vulnerable to external shocks and overly dependent on oil. Extreme inequality exists, with most of the income going to a small proportion of the population. Only 37% of the total population above six years old has attended school and the enrolment rate is just 48%. These trends can be attributed to the long period of war, during which access to schooling was severely constrained. PARTNERING WITH CH GLOBAL EduDeo Ministries is excited to take our partnership with CH Global to the next level. Over the past 2 years, our Walking Together program has been involved in annual 6-week training sessions. EduDeo has now committed to a 3-year plan that incorporates more in-depth training and eventually building a training centre in Fall 2014! EduDeo s volunteer educators will now travel twice-a-year to conduct month-long sessions with the select participants, who then will take this training to their colleagues. There will also be an additional training session in Ethiopia for key trainers. Learn more about South Sudan and read teachers testimonies at u edudeo.com/get-inspired/countries/south-sudan DESIRING MORE God is already at work in South Sudan, giving teachers a deep longing for more of this kind of learning. As one participant declared, I want to make my classroom a place of Shalom, a class of peace, love and friendship. PAGE 20

THE POTENTIAL FOR CHANGE A country of incredible natural and economic potential, the time to invest in the children of Zambia is now. Quality education is the first step in breaking the cycle of poverty and EduDeo Ministries partners in this goal with the Education Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) an association that has had a historic presence in Zambia for over a century. CCAP proclaims the good news of Christ, especially through the witness and testimony of its network of church schools. They serve some of the most neglected children in Zambia, bringing Gospel transformation and educational opportunity to hurting communities across the country. Established with the efforts of the Livingstonia Mission, many CCAP schools began as missionary initiatives. They were annexed by colonial and subsequent one-party rule governments throughout the second-half of the 20th century, only regaining their independence in There is now a deep desire for Biblical worldview and teaching methodology training, as well as an urgent need for rehabilitation of many of their school facilities. A FOCUS ON VULNERABLE CHILDREN Adopting a comprehensive and compassionate approach to the classroom, CCAP schools attempt to reach each child in local enrollment districts, intentionally reaching out to vulnerable students with exceptional needs. Vulnerable students include children separated by parents because of poverty (21% of schoolaged Zambian children) or children orphaned by HIV/AIDS (10% of all children in Zambia).
