1st Timothy Lesson Earlier on October 30 I taught the Doctrine of the Strategy of Satan and when time expired we were in the process of exegeting 1Ti 5: Before continuing you may want to use the provisions of 1Jo 1:9 by silently naming your sins to God as the Holy Spirit may show. 3. Beginning in 1Ti 5:3 Paul describes those widows who are and those who are not eligible for financial assistance. 4. Let s see how 1Ti 5:11-15 looks by way of an expanded translation. Expanded Translation 1Ti 5:11 But the younger widows you must not admit to the charity list for when they feel sensuous impulses they may become alienated against Christ and then quite possibly desire to marry thus breaking their earlier vow of service, 1Ti 5:12 accordingly, because these young widows will often refuse to perform their vows of service, and thus bring upon themselves selfjudgment, 1Ti 5:13 now additionally you must understand that many younger women will in the performance of their vows give in to idleness, wandering about from house to house gossiping and sticking their noses into the business of others and then sharing their gossip with other church members which is neither right nor proper. 1Ti 5:14 It is my desire that the widows under sixty years marry, have children, run efficient households and thus give no occasion to the devil and his subalterns for slandering and maligning Christ s ambassadors; 1Ti 5:15 for you see we have in the past seen young widows who have forsaken their vows of service and turned away from God and are now serving Satan. 5. Paul spends significant time providing objective requirements concerning who may be admitted to the charity list. Why? 5.1 to avoid rancor within the local church over who did or did not get admitted to the benevolent fund, 5.2 and to make clear family members know they are to take care of their own. 6. These are church benevolent requirements; such restrictions do not prevent individual charity gifts. 1

KJV-New Sentence 1Ti 5:16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. NIV 1Ti 5:16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need. IF ANY MAN OR WOMAN 1. Ean Tis Pistis is better translated If there are any believing women 2. Ean is a first class conditional particle followed by the categorical pronoun Tis declined as a nominative singular and the noun Pistis declined as a nominative feminine singular. 3. Ean is a first class particle indicating if and it is assumed true. We know that Ean is a first class because the verb following is in the indicative mood. Recall there are four types of if found in the Greek language. 4. The pronoun Tis refers to some unnumbered group, indefinite but certainly extant. 5. Pistis is an old favorite studied on many occasions. It is the noun form of Pisteuo meaning to believe thus the noun is often translated faith. Of interest in our verse is the feminine form; thus, speaking of a believing woman or women. In the KJV it is translated man or woman however, in the NIV we see the subject is a believing woman. THAT BELIEVETH HAVE WIDOWS, 1. Echo Chera is better translated who have a widow or widows in their family 2. Echo is a verb parsed as a 3 rd person singular present active indicative followed by the noun Chera declined as an accusative plural. 3. Echo means to have and to hold. It can be found more than 900 times in the New Testament, where it is translated has, have, hath, had, having, hold and holding. At our last session we noted several uses found elsewhere in Scripture. Gal 2:4; Gal 4:22; Eph 2:12-13, 5: Chera had been previously studied as the word commonly used for widows. 2

LET THEM RELIEVE THEM, 1. Eparko Autos is better translated it is their responsibility to take care of them 2. Eparko is a verb parsed as a 3 rd person singular present active imperative followed by the pronoun Autos declined as a dative feminine plural. 3. Eparko can be found one other place in the New Testament. 1Ti 5:10 Well reported for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. In antiquity Aristotle, Homer, the author of 1 st Maccabee, and Josephus used Eparko of those who helped and aided others in need. 4. Let s see how our verse looks so far by way of an expanded translation. Expanded Translation 1Ti 5:16 If a believing woman has a family member who is a widow in need; it is that person s responsibility to take care of her AND LET NOT THE CHURCH BE CHARGED 1. Kai He Ekklesia Me Bareo is better translated and not the local church s benevolent fund 2. Kai is a conjunction used as a simple connective followed by the monadic noun Ekklesia declined as a nominative singular and the verb Bareo parsed as a 3 rd person singular, present passive imperative. The negative adverb Me next follows. 3. The Greek word for church is Ekklesia. It originally meant "the congress at Athens." 3.1 The word in the New Testament has four meanings: A gathering of citizens in a public place to deliberate An association of craftsmen Acts 19:25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. Acts 19:26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands. 3

Acts 19:32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. All believers of the Church Age Eph 1:22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. A local church is under the authority of a pastor-teacher 1Th 1:1 Paul, Silas and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you. Heb 13:7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Heb 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. 4. Bareo appears some six times in the New Testament where it is translated burdened, burden, oppressed, being burdened, or heavy. Mat 26:43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. Mat 26:44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 2Co 1:8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. 2Co 1:9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 2Co 1:10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 2Co 1:11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. 2Co 5:4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 2Co 5:5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 4

2Co 5:6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 2Co 5:7 We live by faith, not by sight. 5. Let s see how our verse looks so far by way of an expanded translation. Expanded Translation 1Ti 5:16 If a believing woman has a family member who is a widow in need; it is that person s responsibility to take care of her and not the local church s benevolent fund THAT IT MAY RELIEVE THEM 1. Hina Eparkeo is better translated and thus she might take care of her kin s financial needs 2. Hina is a causative continuative adverb followed by the verb Eparkeo parsed as 3 rd person singular aorist active subjunctive. 3. As earlier noted the verb Eparkeo or Eparcho is used of warding off, assisting, relieving or succoring. THAT ARE WIDOWS INDEED.. 1. Ho Ontos Chera is better translated provided of course, she is a widow indeed. 2. Ho is an article parsed as a dative plural and used as a substantive followed by the adverb Ontos and the noun Chera declined as an accusative plural. 3. Ontos is more often than not translated really. In our case it could be rendered those ones who are really widows. 4. Chera in this case refers to a widow who may or may not meet the criteria established by Paul but has the desire and wherewithal to help. 5. Now let s see how our entire verse looks by way of an expanded translation. Expanded Translation 1Ti 5:16 If a believing woman has a family member who is a widow in need; it is that person s responsibility to take care of her so that the local church s benevolent fund remains untouched; she therefore must take care of any member or members of her family who are widows indeed. 6. Now let s see what we can learn from an exegesis of 1Ti 5:17. 5

KJV 1Ti 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. NIV 1Ti 5:17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. THE ELDERS 1. Ho Presbuteros is better translated The pastor-teachers 2. Presbuteros is a monadic noun declined as a nominative plural. 3. Presbuteros means the old man. The word stresses the authority of the leader of the local church. The word also stresses authority in terms of representing the absent King thus the Ambassador. 1Ti 5:19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 1Pe 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Tit 1:5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 1Sa 26:9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD'S anointed, and be guiltless? WHO DIRECT THE AFFAIRS OF THE CHURCH WELL 1. Prostatis Kalos is well translated who direct the affairs of the church well 2. Prostatis is a verb parsed as a perfect active participle followed by the adverb Kalos. 3. Prostatis appears eight times in Scripture where it is used to describe one who stands in front, he who stands before, a leader, a protector, a champion and a patron. 4. Let me give you several uses found elsewhere in the New Testament: Rom 12:4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, Rom 12:5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6

Rom 12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. Rom 12:7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; Rom 12:8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. 1Th 5:12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 1Th 5:13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. 1Ti 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 1Ti 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 1Ti 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 1Ti 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. Tit 3:8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. Tit 3:12 As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there. Tit 3:13 Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way and see that they have everything they need. Tit 3:14 And let our people also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. BE COUNTED WORTHY 1. Axioo is better translated these men must be deemed worthy of respect and honor 2. Axioo is a verb parsed as a 3 rd person plural, present passive imperative. 3. Axioo appears seven times in Scripture where it is translated thought, thought good, would count worthy, was counted worthy and shall be thought worthy. Let s see how it is used elsewhere in Scripture. 7

Luk 7:6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I do not deserve that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Luk 7:7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. Acts 15:36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. Acts 15:37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. Acts 15:38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. Acts 28:16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him. Acts 28:17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: "My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. Acts 28:18 They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death... Acts 28:22 But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect." Heb 3:3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. Heb 10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Heb 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
