1 1st Timothy Lesson # Last week I completed the exegesis of 1Ti 3:5. When time expired, we were about to begin an analysis of 1Ti 3:6. 2. Before we return to our study, you may want to use the provisions of 1Jo 1:9 by silently naming your sins to God as the Holy Spirit may show. 3. Before we continue I want to give you an expanded translation of 1Ti 3:1-5. 1Ti 3:1 No doubt there will be men who will aspire to the office of pastor-teacher; and clearly those who do, aspire to an honorable office. 1Ti 3:2 Therefore, one aspiring to be a pastor-teacher must be blameless and above reproach, married to but one wife, free of excesses, well ordered and disciplined, hospitable, having an inclination toward teaching, 1Ti 3:3 not a drunkard, not a quarrelsome or violent person but gentle and not overly fond of money but generous; 1Ti 3:4 the pastor-teacher must be well known for presiding over his own household, having his children in obedience; his children giving him the utmost respect, 1Ti 3:5 now there will be men who will aspire to the office of pastorteacher who do not know how to rule their own households; how will these men rule God s local churches? 4. Now for a new sentence and a further caveat for an aspiring pastor-teacher. KJV-New Sentence 1Ti 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 1Ti 3:6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. NOT A NOVICE, 1. Me Neophutos is better translated not a neophyte or not a new Christian 2. Me is a negative adverb followed by the noun Neophutos, declined as an accusative singular. 1

2 3. Neophutos is a hapax legomenon. It is translated in secular literature as newly planted, one newly implanted or a new convert. It can be found in the LXX in Isa 5:7, Job 14:9 and Psa 129:1-2. In the Greek translation of the Old Testament from the Hebrew, it is used of a beloved plant, a newly planted plant and a youth. KJV Isa 5:7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his "pleasant plant:" and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry. Job 14:7 "At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. Job 14:8 Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil, Job 14:9 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant. Job 14:10 But man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more. Prayer for the Overthrow of Zion's Enemies. Psa 129:1 They have greatly oppressed me from my youth (NAAR) -- let Israel say -- Psa 129:2 they have greatly oppressed me from my youth (NAAR), but they have not gained the victory over me. LXX-Septuagint (284 B.C. to 247) Psa 129:1 Many a time have they warred against me from my youth (Neophutos), let Israel now say: Psa 129:2 Many a time have they warred against me from my youth (Neophutos): and yet they prevailed not against me. LEST BEING LIFTED UP WITH PRIDE 1. Hina Me Tupho is better translated lest he be overcome with pride or lest he become so conceited 2. Hina is a purpose conjunctive adverb followed by the verb Tupho, parsed as an aorist passive participle. 3. Hina with Me is to be translated either as except or unless. 4. Tupho also appears in 1Ti 6:4, where it is translated proud. It can also be translated smoke, to besmoke, to be possessed with fumes, to be demented, conceited or to be puffed up. 2

3 1Ti 6:2 Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them. 1Ti 6:3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 1Ti 6:4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 1Ti 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 2Ti 3:1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2Ti 3:2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 2Ti 3:3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 2Ti 3:4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God -- 2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 2Ti 3:6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 2Ti 3:7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. 5. The concern of Paul is that a young aspirant might become possessed with his own importance. 6. Let s see how our verse looks so far by way of an expanded translation. Expanded Translation 1Ti 3:6 Not a new Christian lest he become overcome with pride HE FALL INTO CONDEMNATION 1. Empipto Eis Krima is better translated and fall under the same judgment 2. Empipto is a verb parsed as a 3 rd person singular aorist active subjunctive followed by the preposition Eis and the noun Krima, declined as an accusative singular. 3. Empipto appears seven times in the New Testament, where it is translated in the KJV as fall, fall into, shall fall into or encounter. 3

Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 1Ti 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 1Ti 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 1Ti 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Heb 10:32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; Heb 10:33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. Heb 10:34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Heb 10:35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. Heb 10:36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. Heb 10:37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. 4. Krima appears more than 25 times in the New Testament, where it is translated damnation, condemnation, judgment or chastisement. Mat 7:2 For with what judgment (Krima) ye judge (Krino), ye shall be judged (Krino): and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mat 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Mat 7:4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Mat 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Rom 2:1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest (Krino): for wherein thou judgest (Krino) another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest (Krino) doest the same things. 4

5 Rom 2:2 But we are sure that the judgment (Krima) of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. Rom 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment (Krima) was by one to condemnation (Katakrima), but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. Rom 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment (Krima) came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 1Ti 5:12 Having damnation (Krima), because they have cast off their first faith. 1Ti 5:13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 1Ti 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 1Ti 5:15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. 1Ti 5:16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. 5.
