Introduction Thank you for showing an interest in our church. We hope that you will find in this profile a compelling picture of the opportunity to serve as the next rector of our unique congregation. Please also visit our website at or contact us with questions at search@allangelschurch.com. All Angels Church was planted in 1846 in Seneca Village (now Central Park) as a mission to the poor of different races who inhabited the village. Today, All Angels continues that mission in being a visible sign of God s invisible kingdom by breaking through racial, socioeconomic, and generational differences in our world. We desire to see all people transformed by the gospel, formed into the image of Christ, and empowered for missional living. To this end, we are fully Episcopal and theologically orthodox. We worship sacramentally through Anglican liturgies and believe that our lives are transformed through personal relationships with Jesus Christ. Like the city around us, our church is vibrant and growing. We are deeply committed to our numerous ministries, which include programs geared toward those experiencing poverty, urban professionals, artists, young families, and students. We are thankful that God has provided for the ongoing financial needs of these ministries, allowing us to provide dynamic and transformative programming to all who are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus. The information in this parish profile reflects extensive surveys, individual and small group conversations, and prayerful consideration, all of which helped crystallize the nature of the opportunity that awaits and the needs of our church community. We are seeking a rector who is well-equipped to shepherd our parish through our current season of growth as we collaborate with the Diocese of New York to expand our ministries to meet the increased and urgent needs of the people of New York City. This will include broadening and deepening the scope and reach of our current programming while also commissioning parishioners, led by the Holy Spirit, to go forth in revitalizing our city churches and bringing the Gospel to more corners of New York City.

Our Congregation and Worship Life Morning & Evening Worship Inspirational, life-changing worship is at the heart of all we are and do. We are committed to creating an atmosphere in which Jesus is exalted and the Holy Spirit is free to move during our weekly services. We want all congregants to worship, pray, study Scripture, participate in the Eucharist, and make fellowship an integral part of their lives. Currently some 200 adults and about 40 children and youth gather for worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings and approximately 120 adults and five children gather at 5 p.m. on Sunday evenings. In the morning we follow Rite Two from the Book of Common Prayer, while in the evening we use a less formal liturgy. So far this year our sermons have focused on the book of Acts, as we measure our church life against that of the Early Church. We are also reading the Bible in a year following the BibleProject.com. We gather after each service for a time of fellowship together. More than half of the adults in the parish are in their 30s and 40s, although parishioners range in age from late 20s to early 80s. Approximately 90 children and youth are part of our community. While the majority of our congregation lives in Manhattan, there are congregants from all boroughs of New York City and a notable contingent from New Jersey and other suburbs. Half of our congregation has attended All Angels for less than five years, but a significant number have been here more than 20. All Angels reflects the transience of New York City, and thus we are constantly welcoming new congregants and saying goodbye to others. Congregational Demographics Based on our survey results and our knowledge of our people, we affirm that All Angels is a vibrant community of racially and economically diverse congregants. Our contemporary morning service attracts families with children and teenagers who participate in various ministry opportunities during and after the service. A healthy contingent of singles of all ages also attends this service. Our evening service is a racially and socioeconomically diverse gathering characterized by lively gospel worship. This congregation is a mix of families, singles, and people facing challenges caused by homelessness, poverty, mental illness, and addiction. Although most congregants attend one service or the other, there is broad appreciation for the breadth of our gatherings and a strong interest in fellowship opportunities that bring everyone together.

Community Ministries We believe we are unique in New York City in our approach to helping individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and/or mental health challenges. We do this through a holistic approach to crisis and social services anchored by compassionate care, spiritual formation, and community building. Our goal is to support these individuals as they move from a place of need to a place of independence, and to welcome them as integral members of the church. In 2017, we served over 600 unique individuals (including numbers from Pathways, Shelter, and the Institute for Family Health only), many of whom are are members of our parish. Community Ministries collaborates closely with a number of other service providers in New York City and receives support from other churches and charities. Community Ministries is led by the Director of Community Ministries and supported by a part-time security and support-staff team (comprised of former Community Ministries participants) and more than 30 regular volunteers. Crisis and Social Services Pathways Drop-in Program: Pathways exists to minister to the basic needs of individuals living homeless or in extreme poverty. We provide men and women an opportunity for a continental breakfast/nutritious lunch; showers, fresh clothing, and haircuts; mail service; medical, psychiatric, and social services; and pastoral care. Pathways functions as a conduit into the larger community of All Angels Church and community programs. It operates in partnership with the Institute for Family Health (Care for the Homeless) and is managed under the supervision of the Community Ministries team. (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) guests are monitored by church staff, security, and trained volunteers. Up to 13 women and 25 men are permitted to stay the night on a first-come-firstserved basis. Wellness Group or Bible Study attendance is required for shelter registration. (Sundays, 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) Code Blue Emergency Shelter: During the winter months, All Angels opens our doors for emergency shelter in the event of extreme weather conditions. Community Groups 3:45 p.m. Bible Study: This study is primarily for shelter guests, with the addition of occasional members from the evening service. The study is designed to teach people how to express themselves without fear of judgment, to identify their personal strongholds through the lens of the Gospel, and to commune with God and others. (Sundays, 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.) Wellness Group: The Wellness Group is in its early stages of development. It exists to unify shelter guests around such common daily struggles as anger management, life skills, navigating social services, self-confidence, legal rights, etc. The goal is to relearn our humanness despite the conditions of an inhuman street environment. (Sundays, 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.) Community Meal Our community meal is an integral part of our evening worship service. A hot meal brings together the homed and homeless as we serve an average of 85 individuals each week. We are supported by a volunteer chef and a rotating schedule of volunteers from within our congregation and other churches. Shelter Sunday Respite Shelter: Our respite shelter is privately run by All Angels Community Ministries. We provide a peaceful night s sleep in a hospitable, accommodating, and safe space, as well as a hot meal, showers, toiletries, and warm company. All shelter

Fellowship and Christian Education Membership In April 2018 we asked all regular attendees to renew their covenant for active membership at All Angels. In signing the covenant, members affirm that they believe in the historic creeds; commit to attending worship regularly; pledge to give financially to support the ministry and mission of the church; commit to offer time and talents in support of the church; and commit to prayer and personal Bible study as part of their desire to live a life worthy of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. The covenant was signed by 222 adults and 84 children. In addition, we have a significant number of regular visitors and a list of about 5,000 alumni and other supporters. Children s and Youth Ministries Children s and Youth Ministries serve children from age six months through high school graduation and have been an area of growth for our church. The staff team communicates weekly with 89 parents who represent 12 nursery-aged children, 39 children age three through fifth grade, 15 junior high youth, and 23 senior high youth. Typical Sunday attendance includes, on average: 21 children (age three to fifth grade); 9 junior high youth; 10 senior high youth. They are a very visible part of our church life and worship. The staff team includes a part-time director of Children s and Youth Ministries (who will become fulltime in fall 2018), two half-time youth coordinators, a part-time nursery coordinator, and several hourly nursery caregivers. These staff are supported by a team of volunteers from the congregation. Nursery For children aged six months to three years, our nursery is among their first experiences of church. In this place, we seek to communicate the love and care of God for each child in a way they can understand. Our priority is to inspire the confidence of the parents who are leaving their young ones in our care. Coverage is provided for all services, with three hired caregivers serving the morning service and two serving the evening service. Our nursery space is bright, cheerful, and separated from other active ministries. Children s Ministry: Age Three Years through Fifth Grade Children attending the morning service have two distinct children s ministry programs each Sunday: Children s Worship and Sunday School. Children s Worship: Children begin the service in the sanctuary with their parents and are then invited to one of four break-out groups located on the third and fourth floors. While intergenerational experiences are a priority for us, groupings that allow for developmental differentiation are essential in this area. The substance of Children s Worship is Godly Play, a storytelling approach developed by Episcopal priest Jerome Berryman. Sunday School: Immediately following the morning service, children have an opportunity to engage with our dynamic curriculum, participate in one or more affinity clubs, and attend special events. Youth Ministry While our Children s Ministry has enjoyed a long history, our Youth Ministry is in the early stages of becoming a robust, vibrant ministry. In 2016 we participated in the Fuller Youth Institute Sticky Faith Cohort. This has guided our ministry since and helped us articulate and shape our values around intergenerational relationships, opportunities for youth service, the importance of empathy and warmth in the ministry, and the value of parents continued involvement in Youth Ministries. In addition, we are aware of the reality that only half of self-identified high school Christians will still profess faith by the third year of college; we are actively working to help our youth cling to their faith. Our current youth program structure is as follows:

Sunday Youth Group: Junior high (sixth through eighth grade) and senior high (ninth through twelfth grade) each meet weekly, led by two half-time youth coordinators and a roster of six volunteers. As appropriate, volunteers use their expertise to lead particular initiatives. The Bishop recently confirmed 12 youth. Friday Youth Worship Night: This has been a monthly initiative for youth to invite friends for an evening of dinner, games, and a time of worship and discussion in the sanctuary, as a way to build stronger connections to different worship experiences in the space. A variety of parishioners have been guest speakers as we work to build intergenerational connections. Youth Fellowship in Family Homes: Parents have hosted youth in their homes monthly as a way to build deeper friendships among youth. Serving at the Community Meal: Youth volunteer on the second Sunday of each month. Retreats: Retreats are an essential part of our ministry to children and youth. These opportunities to get out of the city and take time to go deeper in our relationships and our studies are invaluable. The annual fifth grade retreat is a milestone in preparation for entering junior high, and we focus on listening to God s voice. Mission Trips: The youth take annual summer mission trips. While the location may vary, the goal is the same: disorientation as a way of orienting their lives more deeply in the rhythms of God. Adult Education We are committed to growing disciples of Jesus Christ, and we do this by engaging with God s Word and applying it to our lives. We provide many opportunities for adults to deepen their faith through seasonal class offerings and workshops, community Bible study at 3:45 each Sunday, and weekly study within house churches. This year the church is reading through the Bible in one year using The Bible Project s Scripture reading app and video series. We have identified adult education and discipleship as one of the areas that needs revitalizing. Therefore, we are currently undertaking a major review of our discipleship formation program, which we intend to launch with the new sermon series in the fall of Small Groups, including House Churches We believe that small group gatherings centered around Scripture, prayer, and relationships are vital to our spiritual growth as a community. House churches are one place where we live life together. These eight groups are a primary way through which our parishioners deepen their ties to the church and one another. Approximately one-third of our active members are affiliated with house churches. A survey two years ago suggested that around 80 percent of our congregants are actively engaged in volunteer ministry groups within the parish (lay eucharistic ministry, worship teams, prayer teams, etc). We are looking at further ways to engage all members of the community in small groups for service and fellowship. For example, we recently organized a lunch for under-35s and plan to develop this and an equivalent for over-55s as a regular part of our church program. Retreats Personal and group retreats are a key feature of All Angels life. Our annual parish retreat is one of the highlights of our church year. This gathering gives us the chance to spend unhurried time with God and each other away from the city. The weekend involves times of worship, focused teaching on a particular theme, corporate prayer, fellowship, programming for children and youth, fun activities, and such beloved traditions as our annual (epic!) lip-sync battle. This year our parish retreat will focus on engaging with God effectively in prayer. In addition, we host an annual retreat for women and ad-hoc retreats for children and youth. Many of our congregants also utilize one of the many retreat houses in the New York City area for personal retreats.

Prayer and Care As the family of God, together we seek to offer prayer and care to our active membership and the community around us. Healing Prayer Teams We offer prayer for individuals seeking physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The healing prayer team, composed of trained parishioners, is available in each Sunday service. We also lead a weekly healing prayer service on Thursdays and provide individual healing prayer during the week by appointment. Individual Pastoral Care Clergy, house church leaders, and others provide individual pastoral care for a wide range of needs, including marital, vocational, psychological, and financial. Where appropriate, we refer people to professional counseling services. Premarital Counseling We are thrilled when couples commit themselves to Christian marriage and offer guidance and practical advice specific to each couple. This normally takes the form of six to eight sessions with All Angels clergy. Contemplative Prayer We meet Sunday mornings to pray in a way that emphasizes listening and being present before God, to each other, and to our deepest selves. We often use Scripture, also drawing upon imagery and times of silence to help us listen to God s voice and simply rest in his presence. Intercessory Prayer Believing that the stakes are high in ministry in New York City, in the winter of 2018 we launched a more concerted effort around intercessory prayer. This prayer effort is focused on morning worship services, vestry meetings, and rector search committee meetings. We hosted a Saturday seminar to learn about intercessory prayer and acquire the tools to engage in it. We have experienced the power of these prayers! Meals Ministry The meals ministry is an opportunity to serve our fellow parishioners through the gift of food. We provide meals to those who are ill, injured, recovering, or adjusting to a newborn.

Worship Arts New York is a global hub for emerging and established artists, some of whom find their church home at All Angels. We seek to support them in their gifts, allow them to express their talents, and foster mutual support in our church community. We believe that all of life is to be lived in thankful, worshipful response to who God is. The Arts Ministry seeks to engage creative practitioners in fulfilling the manifold mission of the church in worship, formation, and outreach. From services and special events to choir rehearsals and meals together, we currently nurture and equip 65 artists of all disciplines for faithful living and service to Christ. These individuals form and guide artistic programming throughout our ministries, supporting and enriching the work of the church. Finances Our annual budget is approximately $1.55 million. Of this, approximately one million is received through pledges, non-pledges, and in cash. The balance is received through grants, space rental fees, and a contribution from our endowment was a year of financial health for All Angels. Offerings were up and expenses were down (due in part to open staff positions). Our investment fund balance increased [from $4.23 million to $4.80 million, due to a 13.5 percent overall investment return less normal (approximately 5 percent) withdrawals to fund clergy expenses and operations], as did our cash balance ($281,413 to $527,835). This provides the vestry with a sufficient cushion to weather the variability in offerings from month to month and the ability to finance unanticipated expenses, including capital improvements. At the end of 2017, we launched a stewardship committee, which is focusing on encouraging the congregation to live generously in response to God s great generosity to us. We expect that our giving will increase as a result in the coming years. We are up-to-date with paying the parish assessment to the diocese. Pledges, Plate, and Budget 2017 Actual ($) 2018 Budget ($) Total Operating Revenues & Support 1,531,900 1,557,000 Total Operating Expenses 1,238,100 1,493,000 Net Operating Surplus (Deficit) 293,800 64,000 Total Capital Expenditures 39,600 64,600 Net Surplus (Deficit) 254,200 (600)

Missions We aim to be a missions-focused church as we seek to grow the Kingdom of God in New York and beyond and in response to the Great Commission. We offer material support and encouragement to several programs in the U.S. and are working to increase the congregation s awareness of the needs of the global church. Ministry Partnerships All Angels Church has a strong history of partnering with local ministries. These relationships, including those with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Young Life, have expanded All Angels vision for gospel transformation to high school and college campuses. Partnerships with local school and homeschool groups have helped form parents and young people in Christlike character. Partnerships with Christians in the Visual Arts and the International Arts Movement have empowered artists for missional living in the specific context of their creative work. Facilities The historic All Angels sanctuary was sold many years ago; we now worship in what was the parish house, built in the early 1900s. Our sanctuary, which seats approximately 200 people, is on the second floor. Offices and a gallery/youth room are on the third floor. Our fourth floor includes a gymnasium. The first floor holds the architecturally innovative Palmer Hall, in which much of our Community Ministries work and our coffee hour take place. At the rear of the first floor we have a pleasant nursery, which is used on Sundays. Our basement holds a very wellused kitchen, a youth room, showers, and offices for our community health program. The building is in a reasonable state of repair with no major issues, but it is tired and in need of further investment. Building access is a significant issue for the disabled, elderly, and others with mobility challenges. We are currently considering options for installing an elevator and are developing a three-to-five-year building refurbishment program. The parish owns a spacious (for New York City!) three-bedroom, three-bathroom rectory in a condominium building eight blocks from the church. The building has a gym and swimming pool, and is near public transportation and excellent schools. Recent rectors have used the rectory to host social events for newcomers and parishioners as part of our work to ensure a socially cohesive community in a city where making friendships often involves effort.

Staff We are blessed with an enthusiastic, committed, and talented team of paid staff and volunteers. The two clergy and three ministry directors are ably supported by two part-time youth coordinators, a parish administrator, a staff assistant, a nursery team, and a security/operations team. Approximately three quarters of regular attendees volunteer at the church in some capacity. Relationship to the Diocese All Angels is an Episcopal church and an active participant within the Diocese of New York. The diocese has a wide variety of churches, encompassing diverse theological stances and worship styles within the core beliefs of the worldwide Anglican communion as contained in the historic creeds. All Angels is generally regarded within the diocese as theologically orthodox and socially progressive. We are evangelical, sacramental, liturgical, and gently charismatic, and we aim to work closely with all other Episcopal churches to further our shared mission.

Highlights from Parish Survey and Consultation In preparing for this profile, All Angels conducted a parish survey and a series of focus groups across the congregation. What follows are highlights from the feedback we received. All Angels is a church that actively welcomes a diverse group of people into community together. Here our parishioners encounter God s presence through the Holy Spirit, and for many All Angels is a place of healing. We are a congregation without many cradle Episcopalians, yet our parishioners are attracted to the beauty of the liturgy and its role in our worship together. We have a preference for strong preaching, and people appreciate Bible-based teaching that informs our calling to issues of social justice in the present day. Indeed, our Community Ministries program is viewed as a vital and integral component of the church, though we are continually working to create opportunities to bridge racial, socioeconomic, and generational divides within our congregation. Our congregation values pastoral care through healing prayer, pastoral counseling, and house churches. Many parishioners avail themselves of healing prayer during the Sunday Eucharist, and people also appreciate that clergy and volunteers are available in times of crisis. Parishioners appreciate the high quality of the music at the heart of our worship; though our Arts Ministry beyond music is less widely known, it has had an important place in the tradition and mission of our church. Similarly, our partnerships with such parachurch organizations as InterVarsity and Young Life are longstanding and important, if not widely known across the congregation. Our parishioners recognize that All Angels is an ambitious church that aims to do many things well. To that end, we value wise oversight and stewardship of our church s resources, as well as a widely shared commitment of congregants time, talent, and financial resources. We appreciate our well-used building and are committed to its care and maintenance. Our church has worked hard to meet the needs of the many young families who have joined us in recent years. Today, our parishioners enthusiastically support our Christian education programs for children and youth, and we have made significant investment in improving our work to meet the spiritual and pastoral needs of teens. Like many New Yorkers, our adult parishioners are often juggling professional and family obligations that leave them pressed for time. Despite that, our congregants have expressed a desire for richer and deeper opportunities for adult discipleship and spiritual formation. People are grateful for ongoing adult fellowship opportunities after both services, especially morning coffee hour and the evening community meal, as well as through house churches.

Job Description The broad range of life experience among parishioners at All Angels is reflected in our wide array of hopes for our new rector. We are united in our desire for a rector with a passion for Christ and Scripture and who has the ability to share that passion through engaging Biblical preaching and spiritual leadership. We care deeply for the sense of community we have found with each other and hope for an empathetic rector who can enrich and expand our community while also caring for the community outside our doors and across the globe. A passion for social justice and diversity is an essential quality in any candidate, and we wish for a leader who speaks to and lives out Gospel-centered mission and social justice. Given our status as a vibrant, growing congregation that is bursting at the seams, we are in need of a strategic, forward-thinking leader who can cultivate a vision for healthy change, continued growth, and creative ways for All Angels to fulfill its desire to be empowered for missional living, both within the congregation and throughout New York City. Building and managing a highly talented professional and lay team that can support the many diverse ministries All Angels offers to its congregants and the people of New York City and beyond. Creatively and meaningfully using the liturgical forms to facilitate genuine worship and communion, so that services become a deeply enriching time for those who attend. Engaging with a major metropolitan area and the people who choose to build lives of faith here. All candidates must be ordained with the Anglican communion and have at least seven years of ministerial experience. If you sense that God may be calling you to All Angels, please send a cover letter, your resume, a current Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) Portfolio, and links to three sermons to search@allangelschurch.com by Tuesday, July 17, For further information, including how to create an OTM Portfolio if you do not have one, please search@allangelschurch.com. The next leader of All Angels should have a passion for, and a history of: Leading a growing, outwardly-focused congregation. Preaching and teaching in a vital, engaging, and relevant way, drawing deeply from the Scriptures and explaining the Gospel and its significance to our lives to a wide range of parishioners across age, race, economic status, and so on. Coming alongside and building genuine relationships with a wide variety of people, from the wealthy, educated, and highly advantaged to those who carry their belongings with them every day. Forming a vision for what an urban community of faithful people could be and enacting a strategy for directing and maintaining growth as the church expands both from within and outside and begins to reach the capacity of its facilities.
