1 FTH410i Medieval Church History Fall 2017 Course Outline Class Start Date & End Date Sept. 6, 2017 to Dec. 11, The take home final will be due on Dec. 20, Class Meeting Time, Location, and Room Online Instructors Name: Tristan Sharp Office: N/A Office Hours: By appointment (via Skype or telephone) Telephone: Skype: ttw.sharp Course Description The historical development of the Church in the Medieval Era from the beginning of the eighth century to Monasticism and religious orders, heretical movements and popular religion, intellectual development, Church and State relations. Course Objectives By the end of the course, students should have achieved the following objectives, and be able to demonstrate: a) an acquaintance with the major developments in medieval theology b) spiritual formation through an appreciation of the liturgy, art, and spirituality of the medieval Church c) an ability to engage critically and analytically with course material, and a mature appreciation of the historical development of the life of the Church d) an ability to connect course material to their pastoral role as ordained or lay ministers. e) an appreciation of the social aspect of the life of the Church in different historical cultures Course Assignments and Evaluation Participation 5% Short tests 15% Primary Source Analysis 10% Discussion leadership 5% Article Review 15% Page 1 of 9

2 Final essay 30% Final exam 20% Participation Students must post a question or comment to about each weeks assigned primary source reading to a class discussion board. Each week the discussion will be lead by a different student. These can highlight something that you found troubling, intriguing, confusing, etc. The grade of 5% is divided evenly on a complete/incomplete basis over 12 weeks. In other words, a student who commented for 10 weeks would receive a mark of 4.15/5, for six weeks, 2.5/5, etc. Students may post at any time from the opening of the forum on the day of class until noon the following Tuesday. Primary Source Analysis and Discussion Leadership Due: various Each student will choose the assigned primary source reading (that is, a medieval text) for one week. The student will write a 750 word paper analyzing the reading. The paper should consider: (a) the genre of work (what kind of work is it), the author, and the date of composition; (b) briefly outline the content of the work; (c) connect it to other class material. Only one student can write on each week, and topics will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. For the week in question, the student who submits an analysis will also be responsible for leading the online discussion. The student should come up with at least three questions or comments to start the discussion, and participate in the discussion as it proceeds. Students must make open the discussion by 5pm on the day of the class., and the analysis must be submitted by 11:59pm on the same day. Because other students depend on the discussion, late submissions will not be accepted for this assignment only. Article review Due Oct. 18; 750 words In this paper students will critically evaluate two assigned articles, and discuss how they can provide insight into the history of the medieval church. More details will be available on the course website. Short tests Due Oct. 11, Nov. 8 There will be two short tests. The second will cover only the material since the first test. Each test will be made available three days before the due date, and must be completed by 11:59pm on the day. Research Paper Due Dec. 11; pp. Students are encouraged to choose a topic that connects with their own academic or pastoral interests. I am happy to work with students to develop topics along these lines, and a list of suggested topics will be provided on the course website.. Students must provide the instructor with a topic for their paper by Nov. 15 and a preliminary bibliography by Nov. 21. Failure to do so will result in the loss of 5% from the grade of the paper. Final exam Due Dec. 20 This exam will be open book, and will consist of short essays that cover major themes and developments of the course, and allow opportunity for personal reflection. San Francisco: Harper Collins, Additional assigned readings will be posted on the course website (see course schedule for details) Recommended Reading There are no prerequisites for this course, but it will be helpful for students to have a basic understanding of the history of Christianity until about 600 CE. Students should consider whether they could provide a short answer about the significance of the following: (a) the Council of Nicaea (b) St Augustine of Hippo (c) the Council of Chalcedon. If the answer is no, students should look at the chapter on Augustine in The Medieval Theologians, and skim the earlier part of Gonzalez s book. Interested students may, of course, read those portions of The Medieval Theologians that are not assigned. Course Requirements The course will require approximately 8500 words of writing total, divided between a two short assignments, a long essay, and an essay based final exam. There will also be two short tests. Students are expected to do all the assigned reading, and to participate actively in online class discussion. On the course website: Gregory Palamas, Triads General Academic Information Late Submission Policy. Late assignments will loose 2% per day (or about one letter grade every two days). Assignments will not be accepted after ten days. I am happy to grant extensions for family and medical emergencies; however, in all but the gravest emergencies students must contact me before the due date of the assignment. Extensions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances, not due to general workload. I strongly encourage students to begin working on research projects early in the semester. Course Attendance No credit will be given for a course if the student has been absent, for any reason whatever, from onethird or more of the lectures and/or seminars scheduled for the term. Likewise, no credit will be given if term assignments or other assignments are or remain incomplete. Leave of Absence and Policy for Incompletes Extensions to an incomplete grade may be granted in extenuating circumstances, but may not exceed 16 weeks following the end of the course. Students who fail to complete course work by the agreed deadline will have a grade assigned which is based on work completed. Academic Integrity Acts of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating, etc.) are subject to an appropriate penalty. The grade F may be assigned to a student guilty of such acts by the professor of the course in which the infraction occurred. A second offense against academic integrity renders the student liable to automatic dismissal from NTC. Further details are available in the Student Handbook in the Academic Misconduct Policy. Academic Grievances Students may appeal grades received; the procedure is outlined in the Student Handbook in the Appeal Policy. For other grievances, students will refer to the Student Grievances Policy also outlined in the Student Handbook. NOTE: The GPA is computed on the basis of cumulative grade point (letter) values, not percentage values. All courses are included in this calculation except those exceeding degree requirements and/or received as transfer credits from other recognized institutions. Page 5 of 9
