1 A Real Family Man Outline and notes in Job 1:5 Preached on P.M. I believe the scriptures bear the fact that Job was a real family man. When we think of Job and his life, most of us immediately become aware of the trials and afflictions and fail to recognize Job s dedication to his family. A man should love his wife as Christ loved the church, and give honour unto her as the weaker vessel. To accomplish that, we re going to have to work at it and work hard. It won t happen by itself, neither will it come about over night. According to verse two Job had a large family. The verse says, and there was born unto him seven sons and three daughters. We know from verse five that Job raised them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and never would be guilty of provoking them to anger. Some believe that verse four indicates that his children lived and unruly and riotous life. But I see there a family that was very close, loving and caring toward one another. And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and drink with them. I believe the phrase, every one his day, probably refers to their birthdays. It also appears that their sisters may have not married yet, but were still included in the fellowship. I want to look at five things that give evidence to Job s being a real family man. I. The Sacrifice He Made For Them: V.5 (In these burntofferings there was cost of revenue to Job) (But he was willing to spend the money for their benefit) A. Family before finances: (Baby sitting) (Two jobs) B. Family before fame: (Glamour girls) C. Family before friction: (Fighting and divorce)

The Salvation He Desired For Them: V.5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. A. He prayed for them: (He offered burnt-offerings) Although the law had not yet been given, as a priest he interceded for them by prayer and sacrifice. Matthew 21:21,22 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. 22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. B. He pointed them to Christ: (He offered burntofferings) 1. He gave evidence of a needed sacrifice: 2. He gave example: (He proved to them that he believed God) C. He pleased the Lord: (He knew the sacrifice was required) 1. By faith he offered and without faith it is impossible to please him: III. The Stand He Took: V.1 (He feared God and eschewed evil) A. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. C. Stood against unholy Hollywood: D. IV. The Support He Gave: V. The Success He Found: Job 42:13,14 He had also seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch. 1. 4 BOUTS WITH OPPRESSION EXODUS 3:9 I want to preach tonight, not on the church s problem, but what I see as the results of the problem. I want to preach on, Bouts with Oppression. I m not a psychologist, neither have I read a book, other than the word of God. I believe I m a good enough judge of people, to recognize an oppressive spirit in the church. There is a difference between oppression and depression. Webster s defines Oppression as: 1. The imposition of unreasonable burdens: 2. Hardship or calamity: 3. Dullness of spirit: 4. misery. Depression: 1. A sinking or falling in of a surface: 2. A sinking of the spirits. People become depressed, or cave in, or give up. Because of the burdens laid upon them by and oppressor. Failure to overcome oppression leads to depression. And, I fear that some of you are on the threshold of caving in. Our text verse says that, the Lord had seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppressed the people of God. How were they being oppressed? I. Oppression Ruled Over Them By Becoming Their Taskmaster: A. Exodus 1:11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burden. B. Exodus 1:14 And they made their lives better with hard bondage

Oppression will rule you, if you allow it: Psalm 106:41,42 41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. 42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. 2. Overcoming oppression brings growth: Exodus 1:12 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. II. Oppression Reduces Christian Virtue: Psalm 107:39 39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow. A. Reduces Joy: Psalm 42:9 9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? B. Reduces Strength: illustrate: Israel during Midianite oppression in Judges 6:2-2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds. Vs. 4-4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass Vs. 6-6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD. 1. When strength fails, so does our ability to occupy the land vs. 2 (They had withdrawn themselves and were hold up in dens and caves)

6 2. They were always sowing but never reaping: vs. 3,4 (The Midianites come up and destroyed the increase of the earth) 3. When they cried unto the Lord He sent a Prophet: (When the Church grows sick of the situation the preaching will deliver it) III. Oppression Is Overcome By A Righteous Life: Isa. 54:14-4 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. A. Oppression is often experienced because of our behaviour: B. Oppression comes often as a form of chastisement C. Oppression is often used of the Lord to bring us back to God. IV. Oppression Reveals Itself Even In The Wise: (or the more spiritual ones: Eccl: 7:7-7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart. (To Show or to Boast) A. You can t conceal your feelings. V. There Is A Refuge From Oppression: Psalm 9:9-9 The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. THE APPLICATION VI. Oppression Rises From: A. Personal Failures: Prov. 24:16-16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

7 Illustrate: Peter: Denied the Lord Lead men back to the old habit of fishing compromised concerning his fellowship with the Gentiles. B. Private Sins: Psa. 103:2,3-2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; C. Poverty In Life: Psa. 37:25-25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. D. Persecution From Others: (To pursue after over a prolonged period of time) E. Prolonged Sickness: illustrate: Hezekiah s sickness. Isa. 38:14 14 Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward: O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me.

8 DYING LIKE JESUS PHILIPPIANS 3:10 It is a fact that all men die. Paul said in Hebrews 9:27 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: The only men I know who escaped death was Enoch and Elijah, and these two, whom I believe to be the two olive trees in Rev. 11:4 shall taste their death during the tribulation period. Even our Lord Jesus, who knew no sin, yet by the Father s appointment met face to face with this enemy and there, by the Grace of God, tasted death for every man. In these verses Paul says that he is willing to suffer the loss of all things, and count them as dung, that he may achieve Four Glorious tasks in his life. 1. He Was Willing To Give Up His Heritage: vs His Religion: vs His Previous Life: vs His Righteousness: vs. 6, 9 By losing these he hoped to gain: 1. Christ: vs.8 That I Might Win Christ 2. That He May Know Him: (Intimately) vs The Power Of His Resurrection: (The Change, The Translation) 4. The Fellowship Of His Sufferings: 5. Being Made Conformable Unto His Death: (Dying Like Jesus Died) Paul accomplished it: 2 Tim. 4:6-8 6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. I believe Paul died like Jesus died, and it is my hearts desire, even to die in like manner.

9 I. Jesus Died Wrestling Against Sin A. He Was Tempted To Quit: Matt. 27:39,40 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Illustrate: Nehemiah tempted to quit: Neh. 6:3 3 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should: the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? 1. Avoid The Pain Of Being Faithful: 2. Avoid The Persecution From Sinful People: 3. Avoid The Problems We Face: B. He Was Tempted To Quarrel: Matt. 27:42 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. Note: I m not going to argue with people over who Jesus person is, nor His purpose. C. He Was Tempted To Retaliate: Matt. 26:67,68 67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, 68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee? Romans 12:19 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. II. Jesus Died Walking With God: (Living In Obedience To The Will Of God.) Heb 10:7 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
