Dear People of St. David s, I pray that you are well and that the love and power of God feel present in your life in these glorious seasons of Easter and Pentecost. By God s grace and love we are invited into a life of forgiveness and freedom from the fear and finality of death. By God s grace and love, we are given gifts for living like Jesus in our own, unique lives and as this community of St. David s Church. This issue of the DOVE focuses on compassion. Jesus says that people will know that we are Jesus followers because we love one another. That s what compassion is all about living with love, having a sense of love for ourselves, certainly, but learning to live with a love for others that reflects God s love, that love that is present and cares for people just where they are and even when that love is not necessarily deserved. 1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these remain: faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love. Compassion is not a feeling, but an action. Like the Greek word agape that Paul writes about In 1 Corinthians 13, it is a love that seeks the good of the other person without expecting anything in return. It is also a quality of love that offers not how we want to love another person, but the way that person needs to be loved. I hope you enjoy reading these articles about the transforming power of compassion and that the next time the opportunity presents itself, you will love the next person you meet and reach out to someone who is in need of just the kind of love you have to offer. Grace and Peace. 2

Men s Fellowship Retreat Friday, March 4th Saturday, March 5th, the Men s Fellowship Group had their annual retreat at the Donaldson Brown Center in Port Deposit, Maryland. The retreat leader, Rev. John Galloway, retired pastor of Wayne Presbyterian Church, spoke on the topic Us Wrestling with God ; an adaptation of the story of Jacob wrestling with God from the book of Genesis. It was a chilly and beautiful weekend, filled with prayer, fellowship, and memories that will last a lifetime. Women s Fellowship Retreat No matter what your age, we all long for deeper connections with God, with ourselves, and with our friends and families. When we learn how, we experience peace-of-mind, an awareness of joyful moments, and richer communication. From Friday, March 17 Saturday, March 18, the Women s Fellowship Group had their annual retreat at the Pendle Hill Retreat Center in Media. The retreat leader, De Yarrison offered tools, insight, and experiences for women to cultivate resilience, self-compassion, and an unwavering belief in oneself. All of the women had a wonderful time, and enjoyed prayerful conversation, team building activities, and delicious organic food! 3

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper On Tuesday, February 28th, we had our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake breakfast in St. David s Hall! We had three different types of pancakes, eggs, hash browns, sausage, fruit salad, and cake for all of those attending. For the kids, we even had a HUGE bounce house and face painting available. All of the proceeds made benefited the youth attending mission trips to Washington D.C. and Uganda. With all that was involved, we wouldn t have done this dinner if it weren t for the help of our amazing volunteers! Thank you to everyone for your help and support in making this one of the best Shrove Tuesday Pancake Suppers we ve ever had! Easter Egg Hunt & Flowering of the Cross This year, the day before Easter on April 15th, kids and their parents gathered in the Fairgrounds for our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Flowering of the Cross! Starting at 9:00am, Maria first told the kids the story of the 12 Resurrection Eggs, which tells the story in symbols of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and rising again in defeat over death. Afterwards, kids raced around the field to try to fill up their baskets with as many eggs as they could carry! Finally, each child was asked to bring a flower to use for the Flowering of the Cross. This symbolizes new life that emerges from the death on Good Friday. 4

The Vestry of St. David s is responsible, with the staff, for planning and implementing the wide variety of worship and ministries in which we all share at St. David s. The Vestry is also responsible for the finances and property of our parish. Each month the Vestry meets to share in a time of spiritual reflection, to hear updates from various commissions, and to make decisions for our common life. Among the topics and tasks taken up over the past two months, the Vestry Continued to reflect with the Parish on the excellent daily meditations in our Lenten book. Received an extensive report on possibilities for our property, including extensive tree work and planting in the Church Yard, developing a prayer garden in the land between the Chapel and the current Gift Shop, considerations for improvements to the Knewstub Building, improvements for the new acre associated with the Church Yard and the possibility of converting one of the mausoleums (near the Church) into a small columbarium, and consideration for replacing the auction tent for the Fair and other events with a permanent, open pavilion. These are the result of ongoing conversation at the Property Commission and the Finance Commission. The Finance Commission informed the Vestry that we received a clean audit and that the financial position of the church continues to be strong. Finance also presented a proposal for developing a capital fund that could be drawn upon for repairs and for some of the projects under consideration. The plan includes using undesignated gifts and bequests as well as a 0.5% draw on the Church and the graveyard endowments to fund such a capital fund. There was extensive and lively discussion among Vestry members about developing such a fund and the Vestry approved pursuing developing the capital funding strategy. 7

With the approach of another annual meeting, the Vestry discussed the possibility of developing a slate of nominees for Vestry rather than an entirely open election. This has been an important topic of discussion for pastoral reasons when members of our congregation are not elected and the challenge that sometimes presents, especially in years when we have fewer nominees and losing the election has a bigger sting. Additionally, a slate has the advantage of electing members of the congregation who have particular gifts important for the governance of St. David s, but who may not be as well known in the congregation. A slate would allow a nominating committee to present a number of potential Vestry members that match the number of outgoing Vestry members, while still allowing for open nominations from the entire congregation. The Vestry is continuing discussion as this would require a by-law change. The Vestry continues to discuss the need to rotate leadership on all commissions to allow for more members to use their leadership skills and to welcome all of us into ministry and into leadership positions. Each Commission will be discussing the desire to rotate leadership and to welcome others into their areas of ministry. 8

Tree Succession Plan In 2015, the St. David s Property Commission recognized the need for an Arboricultural Management Plan that would encompass the entire property including: Graveyard, Fairgrounds, Arboretum, Chapel, Knewstub and both Rectories. Proposals were submitted by three Landscape Architecture and Design Firms. Rockwell Associates, owned by John Horsbach, a Registered Consulting Arborist, was selected. Rockwell Associates was retained for the purpose of developing a full scale 5-10 year management plan. The proposal included a risk assessment to each subject tree on campus, mapping and tagging of all trees, planting and pruning recommendations, removal of identified trees and replacement planting, fertilization recommendations, vine and invasive plant management and urban forest thinning recommendations for overstocked plants 253 Units were inventoried and 160 trees that required work were tagged. Trees were classified into four priorities ranging from trees in decline beyond recovery to trees that required little or no work. Trees that need to be removed were marked with purple paint. Trees that are in danger of falling will be receive top priority for removal. The report included a list of replacement trees that are considered good substitutes for restocking the campus areas. The list and cost of recommended replacement will be published in May. Creek Restoration Project/All Parish Work Day John Horsbach was consulted as a resource to advise the church on the course of action needed to care for and nurture the creek that runs through the property. His recommendations included not mowing within 30 feet of the creek bed to allow natural growth and planting natural plant material about 20 feet from the creek. John recommended a distributor in Octorara, PA that specializes in native plants and sustainable landscape and 200 plants were purchased that will be delivered in time for the next All Parish Work Day, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 13 th. Please come and join your fellow parishioners as we start the process of preserving this wonderful natural resource. 9

Isaiah 30:18 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore, he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! We can experience Compassion in so many circumstances, and even darker moments like the church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina where families lost loved ones. Dylann Roof sat in the church Bible study with the parishioners as part of the church community for an hour and then proceeded to murder 9 parishioners during their Bible study session at the church. Tragic! Horrendous! We truly feel Compassion in this situation and are in awe when those suffering families proclaimed universal love as their way to deal with the egregious situation. Practicing Compassion can also be a lifestyle choice. I have consciously tried to reduce my judgement of others and be more accepting of differences so I can practice Compassion. Recently, I hosted a baby shower for my son and daughter-in-law. The party was a joyous wonderful celebration of life, friendship and family, focusing on the upcoming birth of the first child for the newly married couple and my first grandchild. As I was reveling in the day s accolades and precious memories, dynamics surfaced with family members who hadn t attended the shower. Their angry unkind comments hurt me and tainted my joy of the celebration. I was sad they hadn t attended and experienced the celebration and joy for themselves. My sadness for their missed opportunity shifted to hearing in the voices a deeper conflict where they were entrenched in their own suffering. I felt compassion for them. My own hurt was transformed into Compassion for their unspoken suffering. I learned their comments were not about me but rather created about their own situations. I experienced a personal freedom through my compassion for them. Forgiving, blessing and releasing them from my judgement helped me experience a new wisdom around family dynamics emphasizing the importance of practicing Compassion for each other as well as Compassion for Self. 12 Bless all who teach and all who learn; and grant that in humility of heart they may ever look unto thee, who art the fountain of all wisdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Book of Common Prayer Danny Walker was a sensitive little boy. He loved casual sports. Though small for his age in childhood, he enthusiastically participated in softball games every Saturday morning in the neighborhood park in Blacksburg, Virginia. Danny made friends naturally and earned their trust through faithfulness. As a playmate once observed, Danny was born grown-up. He had a challenge in learning to read. In the second grade he first feared he might not be as smart as his peers. The following year his parents enrolled him in the McGuffey Reading Clinic. His comprehension and speed increased, but his selfconfidence did not. The words learning difficulty entered his consciousness. Mr. Walker started reassuring his son that he himself had always been a slow reader. Danny s mother, often delighted by his quick wit and keen intellect, often told him so. Both parents observed however that Danny s assertiveness seemed muted. As he grew closer to his high school years, both parents counseled Danny to consider joining some of his friends at Christchurch School, a prep school on the eastern shore of Virginia. Reluctantly he came to agree. After initial homesickness, Danny did better at Christchurch than he thought he would. He increasingly made friends in the student body. His greatest challenge remained his lack of self confidence. Since the second grade, Danny had assumed that he would never be a great student nor a valuable athlete. Those assumptions became some of his self-fulfilling prophesies. Danny achieved low B s and C s in his courses, and his efforts in sports never led to a varsity letter. His lack of assurance was consistently manifested in a certain shyness that conveyed itself at times in an attractive self-deprecation. In his senior year, his greatest academic challenge came in reading and comprehending Shakespeare s Hamlet. His English Master, Mr. Taylor, was head of the English Department as well as the varsity baseball coach. Danny felt an outsider in both categories and never considered himself one of Mr. Taylor s favorite boys. 11

On the morning of the final English exam, Danny tensely read the opening essay question: Discuss and contrast the values of Hamlet and Claudius as they contribute to the final tragedy. Danny froze. All he could think of was the old reading clinic s adage: Anxiety and comprehension are enemies. Choose comprehension. When the exam grades were publicly posted on the school bulletin board, Danny saw - as did all of his fellow students - that he had failed the English exam. That meant he would not graduate with his class. He went to phone his parents to tell them not to come to the graduation. When he heard his mother s voice, he desperately tried to keep his own steady as he shared the news. His mother quickly and firmly declared they were coming regardless. Danny quickly hung up and retreated to his room. He needed to collect himself before he could report to Mr. Taylor as the school required in the case of a failed exam. Mr. Taylor, formal and serious as always, told Danny he was sorry but that of course the exam was - as the name asserted - final. He added that graduation was just another day on the calendar. He said summer school often enabled later graduation. Then he added In case that becomes your decision, I need something on file. Write down on this piece of paper Hamlet s major character strengths and flaws. I ll add it to your records. That night during study hall, Mr. Taylor took Danny to his office to show him that apparently, in his anxiety, Danny had failed to sign the honor pledge at the end of his final exam. By regulation, the master explained, it could not be accepted. Instead, Mr. Taylor said he would have to substitute Danny s afternoon writing. That one had earned him a final grade of 85 which was a B. Danny sat staring at the master who rose from his chair, walked to the boy, gently touched his shoulder, and said, Son, I want you to work on trusting yourself. When the Walkers arrived and heard the news, Danny s mother announced she wanted to see Mr. Taylor. Danny was not sure that was a good idea. She replied, I didn t ask you that! and walked off to find him herself. He was in the faculty lounge. There in front of his colleagues she embraced him and joyfully recited the old prayer, Bless all who teach and all who learn, that all good learning may flourish and abound. The startled gentleman blushed as he giggled his thanks to her for such a joyful affirmation of his decision. Today, Danny is Dr. Daniel Walker, a pediatric psychiatrist with a keen interest in childhood development and parental anxiety and blessed are his patients. The Rev. Bill Wood 12

I have no gold or silver, but what I have I give you in the name of Jesus Christ. These are Peter s words to the crippled beggar he encountered at the temple; one of the apostle s first specific actions after the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. They echo the first ad hoc creed of the earliest Christians: The Lord is Risen. Isaiah 49:13 Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice you earth; burst into song, you mountains! For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones. In my opinion, and as I have only come to realize this truth over time, this first creed of the earliest church, The Lord is Risen, or analogous ones expressing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, represent the greatest act of compassion we can offer our fellow human beings in any sort of need. Now that might seem downright scandalous when we look out at the needs of people in this world far and near. Don t preach to me, can t you see I m starving! Unlike Peter, we have gold and silver, and plenty of it, which make Jesus s words ring, and sting, in our ears: I was hungry, sick, thirsty, a stranger, naked, a prisoner, and you met or didn t meet my needs. Inasmuch as you did this or didn t do this unto others, it s the same as if I, Jesus, was that other person. I am rich while 2-3 million are about to starve to death in Africa. I get richer as the gap between rich and poor in this country yawns ever wider. My day of judgment before Christ will, and should be, horrendous. Traditionally, this focus has been called the social Gospel. In wider society, benevolent secular organizations join Christians in doing lots of compassionate work in the world. But, the Gospel per se is often not articulated when we feed, clothe, or visit the needy. How do we do this? I am always concerned to be thought foolish, a religious nut or some a sort of whack-o. I never forget the words of the warden at San Quentin prison warning us four young seminarians about to begin work as prison guards: 13

Listen here you Christ-screamers, he said, it s very dangerous in those cell blocks. Good gracious, I thought, a Christ-screamer! I don t want to be one of them! While writing this, I just took a break for a walk. A woman I ve seen a number of times approached. I said: The Lord is risen, instead of a usual Hi. She smiled and answered: Yes, it is a beautiful day. No, and I repeated: The Lord is risen! She smiled, said: Have a great walk, and went her way. So, I analyze this. I spoke the Gospel, acted it, insofar as I m friendly to this human being, but more: I spoke it. My first reaction was foolish: Oh Gosh, what does she think of me: another religious nut? But recoiling from the moribund egocentricity of that reaction, I thought: Gosh, you never know; maybe that resonates with something in her; or maybe she s never heard, much less inwardly digested those words and understood the utter joy in having done so. Sure I tossed out a tiny seed along her path, but maybe my calling is to do just that: not to shut up, but simply scatter seed and not worry about what the ground thinks of me! Right now, I am dealing with two dear people, men who are dealing with terminal medical conditions. They are both too young to be facing such things. Their deaths, unpleasant ones, loom ever closer. Their similarities end there. One simply suffers and finds no comfort. The person is depressed, bereft and even bitter. The other suffers too, but the quality is quite different because someone, or many people have, over time, been compassionate to him by preaching, relating, making clear to him, what the Gospel is and what it means. This man is comforted by the Holy Spirit. He even quoted St. Paul the other day: Listen Sandy, I reckon that the sufferings of this present life are not worthy to be compared with the Glory which shall be revealed. Yikes! I drank in those words, looking at him in his physical misery, but joyful overall. So be compassionate wherever and however you can and do so by finding a way to speak the Gospel. We don t have to be Christ-screamers, but timid silence is not the alternative. Read the book of Acts. Do compassionate acts in the name of Christ, but always speak the Gospel. That s compassion. The Rev. Sandy McCurdy 14

Let s call him John for the sake of anonymity. He came to me at age 14, eager to sing and to be a part of the choral program at the high school. I have always maintained that there is no such thing as tone deafness and that what passes for such is simply a lack of ear training and music education. John was about to test that theory to the nth degree. No one pitied or ridiculed him. He was accepted and loved as the others loved each other. John was incapable of matching any pitch played on the piano or sung for him. So, I had him sing a pitch first and then matched his pitch. Ok! Many students started here. But unlike the rest, John could not move up or down from his note. He was like a drone, the only shred of hope being that he could sharp and flat the drone note ever so slightly. What to do. School policy said you had to be able to play an instrument to be in band or orchestra and to sing to be in the choral program. That being the case I could have sent him on his way. But there was something compelling about his eagerness and desire. So I made a deal with John. If he was willing to let me share his singing problem with all the choir members and let them help him, he could stay for a year. I would grade him on his progress only, not on requirements the other students had to meet. He was to spend as much time as possible in the practice room and to ask whoever might be in the practice room if s/he would help him. Time passed, and oh so gradually John improved. Many students took on his vocal problems with enthusiasm. No one pitied him or ridiculed him. He was accepted and loved as the others loved each other. Cheers could be heard from the practice room with each of John s successes. 15

By his second year, John could match pitches well enough to sing in the choir, but still needed to put in a lot of extra work to learn his part. John s joy when he got to sing in his first concert was no greater than the joy of all those who helped him get there. Fast forward to John s senior year. The school musical was always double cast to provide more opportunities for the many deserving singers. Auditions were on the stage in front of the accompanist, director, music director and choreographer, who did not know who was auditioning until the person walked on stage. Competition was stiff and many students came to auditions costumed for the part they wanted. And in walks John. The ultimate source of happiness is within us. - The Dalai Lama with the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Photo Courtesy of The Book of Joy disposition when many of us would have given up, made me cry. He announces his name and that he will sing O what a beautiful morning from OKLAHOMA. This is John s first time to audition for the school musical. There was suddenly so much commotion and noise in the hall outside the auditorium we had to send someone to quiet those waiting to audition before John could begin. John sang beautifully! Remembering how close I had come to saying no to this young man, remembering his insatiable desire to sing, his incredible dedication and hard work, his cheery After singing, John told us that many students had worked with him to prepare his audition. And then we learned why there had been so much noise and commotion in the hall before his audition. When we told John he had, at the minimum, a small role in the musical, the students (many who had come just to listen to John through the cracked doors all around the auditorium) rushed the stage and carried John off as happy, or more so, than John. Thinking about the compassion of his fellow students who took on John s problem and made it their own, always gives me hope for a world that is having difficulty acting compassionately. The last I heard, John had received a degree in music education and was teaching in a small town in central Pennsylvania. The Rev. Ed Shiley 16

quotes of compassion God wants us to know that life is a series of beginnings, not endings. Just as graduations are not terminations, but commencements. Creation is an ongoing process, and when we create a perfect world where love and compassion are shared by all, suffering will cease. Bernie Siegel Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. Albert Einstein A religious man is a person who holds God and man in one thought at one time, at all times, who suffers harm done to others, whose greatest passion is compassion, whose greatest strength is love and defiance of despair. Abraham Joshua Heschel It is the compassionate authority that empowers, encourages, calls forth hidden gifts, and enables great things to happen. True spiritual authorities are located in the point of an upside-down triangle, supporting and holding into the light everyone they offer their leadership to. Henri Nouwen Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. Colossians 3:12-13 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:1-3 17

Expect Nothing Expect Nothing Live frugally On surprise. Become a stranger To need of pity Or, if compassion be freely Given out Take only enough Stop short of urge to plead Then purge away all the need. Wish for nothing larger Than your own small heart Or greater than a star; Tame wild disappointment With caress unmoved and cold Make of it a parka For your soul. Discover the reason why, So tiny human midget Exists at all So scared, unwise But expect nothing. Live frugally, On surprise. Alice Walker
