In my new role as Provost, I have the opportunity to meet Cathedral friends both here in Washington and across the country. In my recent travels and communications that I receive, I have been inspired by the length and depth of the commitment that so many long-time supporters have for the Cathedral. It is, indeed, an honor for me to serve this Cathedral and to share its history and vision with friends old and new. Your dedicated support ensures that the Cathedral will continue serving our nation for our children and grandchildren. From preserving this Gothic treasure to training choristers, offering the finest in worship, and welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors and program participants annually, your Cathedral touches and changes lives. You are helping bring a voice of faith and compassion, a place of spiritual discovery and beauty, a venue for the arts and dialogue to people of all nations, faiths, and backgrounds as they enter this sacred space. Please enjoy this spring newsletter and share the work of the Cathedral with your friends and family. I also hope that you will continue to be in touch. In blessings and gratitude, The Rev. Canon Jan Naylor Cope, D.Min. Provost cathedral founders society pin
LEAVING A LEGACY MICHAEL BRUCE l to r: Sara Maddux, Jesse Wilson, and Charles Reynolds. JESSE WILSON ( ) had the great privilege of welcoming worshipers and visitors to Washington National Cathedral for more than 30 years. He began as an usher and subsequently joined the Cathedral Archives in the 1980s, where, working with Dr. Richard Hewlett and Margaret Lewis, he was given charge of the photograph collection. As curator of the collection, Jesse did the initial processing and the organization of thousands of historic photographs, lantern slides, and 35 mm slides. He swore he didn t have a photographic memory, but it often seemed to everyone else that he did. Jesse began volunteering at the Cathedral after retiring from the Federal Aviation Administration with 37 years of government service. Commuting from Bowie, Md., Jesse offered gracious hospitality at major services and dedications, at installations of presiding bishops, and at regular Sunday services; always mindful to welcome all those who enter this inspiring space. The Cathedral would not be where it is today without the generosity of benefactors like Jesse who gave of his talent, time, and treasure during his lifetime and provided for its future in his will. Jesse Wilson s bequest will help ensure that our ministry continues in service to others. We are deeply grateful for his dedication, commitment, and generosity.

CATHEDRAL FOUNDERS SOCIETY MEMBER PROFILE JAN DAY GRAVEL came to Washington, D.C., in 1998 when her late husband, Paul, took a job with the Louisiana State University s Federal Affairs department. A few years later, in 2002, she was drawn to the Cathedral by its rich history. The minute I walked through the doors it was a very, very special place for me. Jan cherishes the significance of what the Cathedral means to this country as a spiritual home for the nation and a house of prayer for all people; she believes that people can find a home here and a connection, as she has. Jan serves in the Cathedral community as a special events volunteer, a congregation member, and a Cathedral Founders Society member. Her involvement at the Cathedral is rewarding to her because the Cathedral is a strong advocate for the role of women in leadership; has strong, inspirational messages every Sunday; and offers compelling programmatic life such as panel discussions, concerts, classes, and workshops. Professionally, Jan is founder and managing director of Janus Development Group of McLean, Va. Passionate about supporting the leadership development of others, she writes a monthly column, the Leading Edge, for the 800 members of the Leadership Arlington community. A lover of travel and experiencing different cultures, Jan has also served as a guide on leadership pilgrimages to Egypt and New Mexico. Her last bucket list trips were to Machu Pichu, Lake Titicaca between Peru and Bolivia, and Havana. Joining the Cathedral Founders Society was a very easy decision for Jan. I knew that I needed to be very intentional about where I wanted my legacy, the funds from my estate, to be directed. She chose the Cathedral as an organization that she says is going to make a difference in people s lives and will be well managed. Although, the Cathedral is special as a spiritual home for Jan, she appreciates its unique national role, and she knows it has infrastructure, internal, and external needs just like any other institution. Jan sincerely believes that she is not any different from anybody sitting in the Cathedral on any Sunday. For her, becoming part of the Cathedral Founders Society is a way that people who are not extremely wealthy or not wealthy at all can make a difference and be a part of the support of the Cathedral in a long-term way. SAVE THE DATE 2016 SPRING LUNCHEON Save Wednesday, May 18, at noon, for our annual Cathedral Founders Society spring luncheon and program. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is our guest speaker. Look for your invitation in your inbox or mailbox.
CATHEDRAL RESTORATION On May 19, 2015, nearly 50 Cathedral Founders Society members gathered for lunch and conversation. In addition to marvelous fellowship and time with Cathedral staff and leadership, members received a detailed update on the progress of restoration from the 2011 earthquake. Jim Shepherd, director of preservation and facilities, and Joe Alonso, head stone mason, presented a slideshow and narrated the nearly four-year journey from that day in August through stabilization, planning, and the completion of Phase I repairs. Marked officially at Evensong in mid-june 2015, the completion of Phase I means the interior restoration is complete along with repairs to the six apse flying buttresses. Phase I was only about an eighth of the overall work that needs to be done to the outside of the Cathedral, notes Jim Shepherd. Until we can get this earthquake repair done, areas that people really love such as the garth with its fountain and other areas of respite and contemplation will continue to be off-limits. Phase II encompasses the nave and choir engaged buttresses, the west towers, the transept grand pinnacles, and, of course, the central Gloria in Excelsis tower. A limited, first sub-phase in the remaining work is commencing on the north transept in the spring of 2016 where scaffolding has gone up. Joe Alonso explains, Last summer the building spoke to us about where to begin Phase II. I was inspecting the garth and found limestone from a secondary pinnacle damaged by the earthquake that had finally given way. Remaining sub-phases will have to wait, however, until funds are raised. Watch the earthquake restoration presentation on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/wncathedral. the cathedral founders society recognizes friends of Washington National Cathedral who have informed the Cathedral that they have included the Cathedral in their estate plans. Members receive Cathedral Age magazine, an annual National Cathedral Association card, recognition in select publications, and an invitation to a spring society luncheon.

PALM SUNDAY CONCERT With the generous support of the Hunter Family Foundation of Lake Forest, Ill., the Cathedral presented a Palm Sunday concert featuring the Diderot String Quartet and the Cathedral Choir of Men, Boys, and Girls. The choir opened the concert with Bach s motet Jesu, Meine Freude. The quartet s violinists then dueled through Bach s Double Concerto. Following an intermission, the choir, orchestra, and soloists offered an energetic performance of Mozart s Requiem to high praise. on august 21, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook the eastern seaboard. It severely damaged the Cathedral; flying buttresses cracked and separated. These flying buttresses support the walls of the high altar and the great choir. During Phase I repairs, masons made core drills 22 feet deep from the exterior face of the flying buttress towers, through the buttress flyers, and into the exterior walls of the east end of the Cathedral in order to reinforce the buttresses. From these core drills, the Cathedral s own stone masons have hand crafted limited-edition founding stones. For a donation of $3,000 toward the Cathedral s restoration efforts, you will receive one of these founding stones. To learn more, please contact Joey Peyton at jpeyton@cathedral.org or (202)
