Encountering Anglicanism General Presentation: Slides 2 47
Purpose of this Workshop To identify the Anglican church as a world-wide church within the Christian faith and to explain its structures; To understand and appreciate the ethos of your Anglican organisation or school; To think further about the role of faith in your life and work, and identify resonances between personal and Anglican values and beliefs.
A World-wide church The Anglican/Episcopal family consists of an estimated 85 million Christians who are members of 38 self-governing member churches in over 165 different countries spread across the globe from Abu Dhabi to Zambia. The symbol is the compass rose which contains the Greek verse from John 8:32 The truth shall make you free.
But what is the Christian Church? The Christian Church began in the First century, from those followers of Jesus Christ who met together to pray, share communion, preach the Good News of Jesus and serve God in their lives. The first believers in Jesus were Jews but the message quickly spread to Gentile (non-jewish) believers. The Christian faith is based on a developing understanding of the mystery of God as Creator, Redeemer and Spirit - expressed as the Holy Trinity. Christians find their salvation Encountering as theyanglicanism are Baptised into Christ, as they Theological College share in the bread and wine ofst Barnabas the Eucharist and as they follow the way
The Spread of Christianity As Christianity spread throughout the known world, it became organised into groups. Christianity in Europe (The West) became centred around Rome and the leader was the Archbishop of Rome: the Pope. Christianity in the East became centred around Constantinople and was led by the Archbishop there: The Patriarch. There were other ancient churches too.
The Spread of Christianity in England The Christian faith spread to England from the Third Century. Anglicanism is both Celtic and Roman in origin. Celtic Christianity swept through Europe and the British Isles with a focus on local tribal independence and an earthy spirituality. The Roman Empire in England brought an emphasis on Church and State connection, corporate organisation and global mission.
The Spread of Christianity in England At the Council of Whitby in 664, Celtic and Roman Bishops met in Northumbria to consider the governance of Christianity in England. While the Roman Mission won the day, what emerged was an approach which combined the recognition of the authority of the Pope with a degree of local autonomy. Augustine, a Benedictine Monk, became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in 597 and led the renewal and reorganisation of the Church in England after a period of decline.
Reformation in Europe Christianity underwent great change in the West centered around the 16th Century. In 1517 German Reformer Martin Luther famously nailed 95 Theses to a church door in Wittenburg opposing indulgences (selling of forgiveness). Zwingli and French born John Calvin also brought reformation in Switzerland. There were many issues leading to discontent with the Catholic church.
Reformation in England The experience of the English Church during the 16th Century
Reformation in England There was a focus on making the scriptures available for people to read for themselves in the English language with a bible placed in each parish church. There was a focus on common prayer in the English language and faith in daily life through the parish church as the centre of the local community. There was a focus on beauty in the liturgy including the beauty of language in the Book of Common Prayer and the beauty of music in the choral tradition.
Reformation in England There was a focus on parish responsibility for
Henry VIII and all that While King Henry VIII cut England s ties with the Pope because the Pope would not allow him to divorce his first wife, he was not a theological reformer. It was his Archbishop of Canterbury; Archbishop Cranmer, who reformed the Church of England through writing the Book of Common Prayer.
People of the Book Anglicans have always had a treasured place for the prayer book. Cranmer s Prayer books of 1549 and 1552 set the pattern. The most important of which was the practice of worship in the vernacular or common tongue (i.e. English rather than Latin); This book was revised in the Book of Common Prayer 1662 which served the church for centuries. During the twentieth Century various provinces of the Anglican Church created their own revisions of the prayer book. In Australia these were:- An Australian Prayer Book (AAPB 1978) and A Prayer Book For Australia (APBA 1995).
The Anglican Communion The world wide Anglican Communion today is a diverse communion in many ways. It is estimated that the Anglican Communion consists of 80 million adherents. What is known as the global south describes the strong growth of Anglicanism in Africa and Asia alongside the recognition of numerical decline in the more established parts of the Anglican Communion including England, Canada, the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia.
The Spread of Anglicanism in Australia The Anglican Expression of Christianity spread via the colonial expansion of England. For many decades it was the largest denomination in Australia. Recent Census figures for people indentifying themselves as Anglican are: 1991: 3,984, : 3,881, : 3,718, : 3,679, 907
Anglicans as Percentage of Population
What is an Anglican?
Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral 1888 An early Anglican statement of the essentials for the Christian church. The Holy Scriptures, as containing all things necessary to salvation; The Creeds (specifically, the Apostles and Nicene Creeds), as the sufficient statement of Christian faith; The Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion; The Historic Episcopate (ministry of Bishops) locally adapted.
Three Sources of Anglican Belief Scripture, Tradition and Reason are together known as the three legged stool of the Anglican faith. They represent an Anglican concern with wholeness and balance. They are the hallmarks of an Anglican emphasis on our journey into the life and ministry of Jesus Christ as faith seeking understanding.
Three Sources of Anglican Belief Scripture - written by people, inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches, inspires and sets a pattern for Christian living and enables us to grow in our understanding of God and our interpretation of the truth of the scriptures as part of an ongoing journey of faith.
Three Sources of Anglican Belief Tradition development of the leadership and authority of the Church under the Holy Spirit s guidance through the creeds, teachings and spiritual writings of the saints as they follow the way of Jesus Christ in successive generations. Tradition is always evolving.
Three Sources of Anglican Belief Reason - helps us to penetrate the full depths of God s truth and involves human thought and discovery as inspired by the Holy Spirit to inform decision making and inspire human progress in the context of social change.
Quick Quote I love the fact that I can have stimulating conversation and yet disagree with the priest, or even the Bishop, and not get kicked because it is all right to use your mind and not be a rubber stamp for anyone. Christ died to save us from our sins, not our minds. Louis Crew, 101 reasons to be an Episcopalian
Anglican Marks of Mission Devised by the Anglican Consultative Council of the Worldwide Anglican Communion (1984) To proclaim the good news of the kingdom; To teach, baptise and nurture new believers; To respond to human need by loving service; To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation; To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth.
Anglican Identity 7 aspects identified by Bishop Keith Rayner, former Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia We are a biblical church; We take seriously the living tradition of faith; We seek constant interaction between the received faith and developing human life, thought and reason; We allow free and open discussion of the faith; We are a liturgical church; We are concerned with the whole life; We claim to be an authentic embodiment of the catholic church but not the whole of it.
Some Basic Anglican Beliefs The next 7 slides briefly outline the following The Bible The Holy Trinity Salvation Creeds The Church Worship The Sacraments
The Bible The inspired Word of God consisting of the 39 books of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and 27 books of the New Testament; The New Testament contains testimony to the life, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus; Great commandment: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:35-40, Mark 12:28-34); Golden Rule: In everything do to others as you would have them do to you (Matthew 7:12).
The Holy Trinity The life, death and resurrection of Jesus and the giving of the Spirit changed how the early disciples understood God. While still believing in only one God, to speak of God now led naturally to speak of Jesus and the Holy Spirit all at once. The church came to see that God is best understood as a communion of 'persons', Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Salvation Salvation (being saved) can most easily be understood as union with God. Salvation overcomes sin which can be seen as a barrier or separation between us and God; Every Christian should witness to the gift of salvation through the death and resurrection of Christ and express the living truth of Eternal life in Christ to the world.
Creeds As the Christian faith grew and evolved in the early centuries it became important at key moments for there to be some agreed statements of Christian belief. The Apostles Creed (the earliest form of which may date back to the second century) and The Nicene Creed (325 CE) are still used today as accepted statements of Christian faith.
Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Church The church is the People of God and all Baptised people are members of God s church. Using the four adjectives from the Apostles creed. The church is.. One Body in Christ; Holy led by the Holy Spirit; Catholic (meaning one and universal) - holding the faith for everyone everywhere;
Worship Communal Anglican worship can include prayers, Holy communion, singing, silence, symbols, greeting each other in peace, bible reading, drama and more. At its heart it is A joyous response to God s love; An expression of hope for salvation; A chance to praise God and receive strength and forgiveness; A way to share faith with others; A time to pray for needs in our world. St Barnabas Theological College
Sacraments A sacrament is a symbol of a spiritual grace; The two main sacraments are Baptism with water (signifying becoming a Christian) and the Eucharist (sharing bread and wine in memory of Jesus); Five other sacraments include Confirmation, Marriage, Ordination, Confession, Forgiveness, and Healing.
Quick Quote Ultimately, I am an Anglican because I believe that the Anglican tradition faithfully expresses the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and thereby gives a God-centered, Scripture-saturated, prayer-immersed shape to all pastoral ministry, corporate worship, and discipleship. Jordan Senner (Anglican digest)
The Anglican Church Understanding some of the Local to Global Organisational structures
The Basic Structure The Diocese The basic governance unit of the Anglican church is a Diocese. This is a geographical area made up of Anglican parishes, schools, institutions and agencies with the Bishop as chief pastor. The Bishop in Synod is the focus for the authority of the Diocese, with the Synod including three houses - Bishops, Clergy and Laity. The Synod meets annually and for special purposes. The Bishop is assisted in the pastoral oversight of the Diocese by the clergy and lay leaders of the Diocese, through a central Diocesan staff and the Diocesan Council which is appointed by the Synod and the Bishop to act on behalf of the Synod.
Who works for the Anglican church? There are many paid and unpaid ministries in the church; The clergy (Bishops, Priests and Deacons) have roles in administration, leadership, parish ministry, chaplaincy and other ministries; Lay-people (the Laity) work in many roles in pastoral care, administration, property, children s and youth work and other ministries; Anglicare and Anglican Schools employ many people in areas of professional care and teaching; There are ministries undertaken by volunteers.
National Structures Dioceses are grouped together as Provinces. Within the Province of South Australia there are three dioceses Adelaide, Willochra and The Murray. The Bishop of Adelaide is the Archbishop of the Province; The Anglican Church of Australia (ACA) is made up of 5 provinces containing 23 dioceses; The Primate is the senior bishop of the ACA, elected by a panel of electors, bishops, priests and laity; The national decision-making body is called General Synod which meets every three years. Each diocese is represented by their bishop, elected clergy and laity.
Global Structures The Anglican Church of Australia is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. This is made up national churches which are culturally distinct from the Church of England but connected through the bonds of affection across the Anglican Communion; The Archbishop of Canterbury is the symbolic head of the Anglican Communion. As Primus inter pares (first among equals) his leadership is recognised by spiritual convention rather than legal authority.
Lambeth Conference Lambeth Conference Growing in cultural diversity
Cultural Diversity The Anglican church in England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand are experiencing some areas of numerical decline alongside growth and experimentation in new forms of gathering. The fastest growing parts of the Anglican Communion numerically are in Africa and Asia and there are many challenges being faced as we become a more culturally diverse church. This is now reflected in the emergence of cultural and language-based congregations in Anglican parishes in the diocese of Adelaide and across other Australian Dioceses.
The average Anglican is now black and female. What would it mean for us to make central to the life and mission of the Anglican Church the theological reflections of such women? In what ways would this require us to deconstruct our ideas not only about gender and theology but also concerning race, ethnicity and mission? Jane Shaw, North American born Anglican Church Historian
Ecumenical Engagement Ecumenism (Co-operation between Christian Churches) has been a significant movement from the mid 20th Century on; The Anglican Church is in State based Councils of Churches, the National Council of Churches of Australia (NCCA) and the World Council of Churches; There are 19 member churches (mainline Christian denominations) in the NCCA; Local ecumenical involvement varies from place to place.
Mission The Five Marks of Mission (see above) are central to modern Anglicanism and there are many agencies who work to ensure active engagement in all areas of mission, both locally and globally; Anglican Board of Mission (ABM), Bush Church Aid (BCA), Anglican Overseas Aid, Church Missionary Society (CMS) and Anglicare are just some of the mission agencies of the Anglican Church; There is a strong emphasis in these organisations on care, community development and social justice.
Quick Quote Because it s one religion where laughing at our own absurdities is a basic spiritual discipline and we re invited to rejoice in how much we have still to learn of God instead of how much we know. Louis Crew, 101 reasons to be an Episcopalian

Worshipping together
Anglican Schools The Anglican Church in South Australia has a long tradition of sponsoring quality education for boys and girls in an explicitly Christian environment; Over 13,000 students are enrolled in Anglican/Ecumenical schools in South Australia; Anglican Schools Australia is a network of Anglican schools containing 150 schools educating 150,000 students Australia wide; Anglican Schools are characterised by their inclusivity, diversity and the achievements of their students.
Anglican Schools Australia Vision Inspired by Christ, Anglican schools are centres of learning where the spiritual, ethical and moral life of a young person is explored and challenged; Core purpose to support and serve our members in creating contemporary Anglican communities; Core values Service, Inclusivity, Integrity, Excellence, Justice, Generosity of Spirit.
SA Anglican Schools Ethos Statement Take some time to look at the ethos statement. It is divided into three sections 1. We provide opportunities for young people to understand the beliefs and liturgy of the Anglican Church encouraging students to consider a personal response to Christian faith and practice, and to develop an appreciation of other religious faiths and spiritual expressions;
Ethos Statement continued 2. We provide a Christian education characterised by intellectual rigour, openness to ideas and debate, mutual respect, and good citizenship as Australians and members of the international community; 3. We participate with the Dioceses, parishes and Church agencies in presenting the mission of the Anglican church to the South Australian Community.
Working in an Anglican School Potential expectations for staff: Modelling the core values of the School; Opportunities to participate in the wider life of the Anglican Church, including Chapel Worship, Reflections, Staff Services, Supporting Anglican agencies (e.g. AnglicareSA, ABM), singing in Chapel!, opportunities for staff to access pastoral care and sacramental support including weddings, baptism, confirmation, funerals); Understanding and exploring our own spirituality; Being aware of the pastoral ministry of the Chaplain; Religion and Values Education (RAVE) and facing theological questions from students. Encountering Anglicanism
Questions for Discussion What church events and agencies might we be involved with at this school? How does this school connect to other Anglican schools? What about the big faith questions? God and suffering; life after death; science and religion; Biblical interpretation and truth; What is the Anglican view about: worship, prayer, world religions, equality, social justice?
Thank God, I m an Anglican If you press me, I must say I am a Christian first and an Anglican second. But my Christianity is lived out in positive identification with the Anglican Church, and I make no apology for that. I see faults in my church, there are times when I criticize it. I like to laugh at it. But I can only be an effective member in this church if I rejoice in it and am convinced that it has an essential vocation within God s purpose for the holy catholic church and the world. Bishop Keith Rayner, Former Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia
Final Reflection Questions What is something new you have taken out of this presentation? Do you have any further questions about the Anglican faith, beliefs and Structures? Does this pose any difficult questions for you about the church or do you have any criticisms that would affect your sense of belonging to the church or working for one of its agencies? Would you like to learn more? Which aspect?
