2 Pastor s Pen It is worth noting that the New Testament writers never made one attempt to explain the Trinity. Indeed, they did not even use the word. They simply spoke of God in three different ways and let it stand at that. Sometimes they said God the Father, sometimes God the Son, and sometimes God the Holy Spirit. And sometimes they used all three expressions together but always without explanation. The Scriptures tell us that God by His very nature is outgoing, that He reaches out to people. He is a Father, and any father, worthy of the name, is involved with his family. He provides for them and gives to them; he feels what they feel; he shares their joys and sorrows, their triumphs and failures. God as a Father is fully involved with the human family. His nature is to give; He is always reaching out, holding nothing back. He is not a lonely, isolated aristocrat, but a loving, involved Father, whose very nature is to give. God has become concrete in history, in and through the life of Jesus Christ, His Son. Jesus was, of course, a real person, a human being. On that point the New Testament is unmistakably clear. Those who knew Him best saw Him first as a man, an incredible, remarkable man, but nevertheless a man. Then somewhere along the way, they began to see something else in Him. Peter was the first to express it. He said, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." Then others began to see and to say the same thing. Thomas called Him "my Lord and my God". John wrote of Him: "In the beginning was the Word, the Word was in the presence of God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we have seen His glory, the glory of an only Son coming from the Father." taught them a great theology, but that was not the good news. The good news was that God had invaded human history in and through the life of a Galilean carpenter. They had seen Him with their eyes. They had heard Him with their ears. They had touched Him with their hands. Never again could they think of God as an abstraction. God, for them, had become concrete and specific in the life of a man. Francis Thompson was right when he called Him "The Hound of Heaven". He is on our trail. He has taken the initiative. He has moved out of eternity into time and space. He has become one of us. God in the person of His Holy Spirit is always with us. He is the Father in Heaven, who is from everlasting to everlasting. He is the Son, who lived in Galilee almost two thousand years ago. But both of those concepts, as true as they are, leave God a long way off and a long way back. The message is not complete until we speak of God as the Holy Spirit, who is both with us and within us. God is forever our contemporary, our constant companion and helper, and guide and friend wherever life may lead us. That was the essence of the message which the early church went out to share with the world. They called it the Gospel, which means "the good news". Jesus had given them a great ethic, the greatest ethic that the world has ever heard, but that was not the good news. Jesus had

3 The Most Holy Trinity And finally they had come to know Him as God the Holy Spirit, who was with them always because He lived within their hearts. In the New Testament, the Trinity is not so much a doctrine that is believed as it is an experience that is lived. And it should be the same in our lives. When Theodore Roosevelt was president of the United States, he had a favorite political story. He said he knew it was a true story because he made it up himself. It was about a congressman who had been accused of not supporting the Monroe Doctrine. The man quickly began to explain. He said, "I believe in the Monroe Doctrine. I support the Monroe Doctrine. The only thing I said was I do not know what it is." That is a fairly accurate description of how many people feel about the doctrine of the Trinity. They accept it; they believe it; they are devoted to it, but they are not at all sure what it means. The concept of the Trinity is inherent to our Christian faith. We recite the Creed that says: "I believe in God the Father...and in Jesus Christ, His only Son...I believe in the Holy Spirit." We sing about it in our hymns: "Holy Holy Holy, merciful and might, God in three persons, blessed Trinity." One theologian, who had obviously struggled long and hard with the subject, said: "The Trinity is a doctrine, which if a person does not believe it, he might lose his soul. But if he tries to understand it, he will probably lose his mind." When the New Testament writers tried to report their experiences with God, they found it necessary to say, "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." They believed in only one true God, but they had experienced the one true God in three ways. They had known Him as God the Father in Heaven, creator of all things. Then they came to know Him as God the Son, who for a few years had walked with them on the earth. Our Gospel says, "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son." This is the central theme of the Trinity, the eternal God has made Himself known in the person of Jesus Christ. We know, of course, that Jesus was human. He got tired and needed rest. He got hungry and needed food; thirsty, and needed water. He lived a real life and He died a real death. He was bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. But when it was all over, those who knew Him best realized that they had met God in the life of a Galilean carpenter. The first chapter of John's Gospel says it like this: "In the beginning was the Word; the Word was in God's presence, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." This meant God has moved into the neighborhood and lived with us. He put up His tent right next to ours. God the Father in Heaven can seem a long way off. God, as revealed in Jesus of Nazareth, can seem a long way back. But God the Holy Spirit is not only up there in Heaven and back there in history. He is with us here on the earth, right now. Perhaps an analogy would help. If I were to ask you, "Where is the sun?" You might answer, "It is up there in the heavens, ninety-three million miles away." And your answer would be correct, but it would not be complete because the sun is all around us. So it is with God. He is up there in Heaven, and we have caught glimpses of Him among the stars. He is back there in history, and we have seen His glory shining on the face of Jesus Christ. But let us never forget that He is the one in whom we live and move and have our being right now---today. There is one true God, whom we have come to know in three different ways, the Trinity of experience.

6 Bulletin Board Stewardship Corner OUR FREEDOM IS TOO PRECIOUS Monday is Memorial Day. This holiday takes on special meaning as we salute our young men and women in the military who are sacrificing their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan and other corners of the world. Fighting terrorism is like no war we ever fought. In past wars, we at least knew our enemy. Now with terrorism, except for some well-known leaders, the terrorists can be civilians, men and women, children an even old people. Terrorism breeds hatred, intolerance and contempt for the freedom of others. All of us were shocked and stunned at what occurred in Boston on Patriot s Day. Two young men whom we welcomed into this country, educated them, turned against us and set off two bombs that killed and wounded over two hundred people. Even a young boy eight years old lost his life as he stood cheering the runners to the finish line. This act of terrorism, not only killed and wounded our people, but it also destroyed families, left children homeless, and made Americans fear for their lives especially in large crowds. But we will not give into terrorism we will not let our freedom be taken away from us. But freedom does not come without a price. Thousands of young Americans, both in the military and the civilian life, have given their lives to preserve our freedom. Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to remember and honor our own military brothers and sisters, especially those who have given their lives. It s also an opportunity to turn to God and beg Him to intervene. One thing is certain we will conquer terrorism. It will take time Our freedom is too precious. Join us! Plan for Tomorrow Tomorrow is a special day... Because it is unspent... And so it offers all its time... For us to be content... It has not even made a start... And therefore it is free... For us to use in any way... To keep us company... We may devote its hours to... A very worthy cause... Or figure every minute as... Another chance to pause... In any case we ought to stop... And think of it today... And try to measure out our work... With time enough for play... We ought to make a schedule for... Our labor and our rest... So every second will be one... In which we do our best.

8 Memorial Day Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed at the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. On this day we honor all who have died in service of our nation. Dear Heavenly Father, With a sober heart we come before You this Memorial Day. We pause for a moment and call to mind all the men and women who have died in the service of our nation. Dear God, please look with mercy on our brave and selfless brothers and sisters, who did not shirk from their task but gave themselves completely to the cause of defending and protecting us all. Bless all who have given their lives for the sake of liberty, and grant them eternal rest with You. We remember also our brave men and women now serving in our Armed Forces, both at home and abroad. Dear God, send out Your angels to protect them all. Help them discharge their duties honorably and well. Please bring them safely home to their families and loved ones. Please bring Your peace and mercy to our troubled world. We ask this, Father, in the name of Jesus, Your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
