2 Pastor s Page According to the Scriptures, Jesus looked at the crowds with compassion, and saw that they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he gathered them around him. Picture Jesus surrounded by thousands of people. They were drawn by the magnetism of his words and the warmth of his personality. The first thing he did was to teach them about the Kingdom of heaven. Then he healed the sick. By the time he had finished it was late afternoon and everybody was hungry. The apostles urged him to send the people away. But he would not hear of sending them away. He worked a great miracle to feed them instead. How happy they must have been as they made their way back to their homes. The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves, when the Lord said the blessing, broke and distributed the loaves through his disciples to feed the multitude, prefigured that which he gives us in the Eucharist. On the first day of week, the day of Jesus' resurrection, the early Christians met 'to break bread.' From that time on down to our own day, the celebration of the Eucharist has been continued so that today we encounter it everywhere in the Church with the same fundamental structure. It remains the center of the Church's life. We are the new people of God. Jesus is in our midst. Here, we hear his voice when the Scriptures are read. His words are not dead words. They are living words which console, inspire and challenge us. Here Jesus heals the wounds of sin and division. He forgives our sins and heals the wounds they leave. We are all healed of our selfishness and indifference to others. The Eucharist forms us into a community of love. Here we are nourished by the food of the Eucharist. "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you shall not have life in you." At the end of Mass we are not simply dismissed, but sent forth as bearers of life to others. Thus from celebration to celebration, as they proclaim the paschal mystery of Jesus "until he comes," the pilgrim People of God advance towards the heavenly banquet, when all the elect will be seated at the table in the kingdom. Regular reception of Christ's body is an assurance of resurrection. "Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise that person up on the last day." The resurrection of all of us seems remote to us now, so remote that the mind cannot focus on it. But, as remote as it may seem now, the Resurrection is the one event on which we base our hope. I cannot believe that death is the supreme reality. I cannot believe that we were born to wither like a sun-baked leaf and to rot in the dampness of the earth. I cannot believe that the good things of life are the false faces of death! We were not born for death, we were born for resurrection. And we have it on the word of our Savior that, if we are faithful to the Eucharist, we too will rise on resurrection day. It is a mighty thought, a happy thought, a hopeful thought. Take it away with you and may it bring you closer in Holy Communion to Jesus, our Risen Lord. Body and Blood of Christ

3 Statues of the Evangelists The four towers that support and anchor the structure of our church and encompass the sanctuary area represent the four Evangelists, Matthew (shown with a bag of coins), Mark (with a lion), Luke (with a winged ox) and John (with an eagle). Bronze statues of the Evangelists remind us that our Church is built on the four Gospels. St. Matthew - Feast Day - September 21 In the northwest corner of the church is the statue of St. Matthew - "The Tax Collector" who is shown with a bag of coins at his feet. St. Matthew was one of the twelve apostles and the Evangelist traditionally regarded as the author of the First Gospel. Nothing can be learned about his personal life from his writings, because he never spoke of himself in his Gospel. His purpose was to convince Christians of Jewish origin that Jesus was the Messiah and fulfilled the promises of the prophets. St. Matthew is the Patron Saint of tax collectors, accountants, customs officers, alcoholics, hospitals and ships. St. Mark - Feast Day - April 25 St. Mark's statue is located at the southwest corner of the church with a lion at his feet. St. Mark is the author of the Second Gospel. He is thought to have been a companion of Saint Paul. His Gospel is a blend of history and theology written in simple, forceful language. The city of Venice has always proclaimed Mark as its patron saint and also claims that his body is buried there. St. Mark is the Patron Saint of notaries, basket weavers, glass workers, opticians and cattle breeders. The lion represents Mark as a symbol of courage and strength. St. Luke - Feast Day - October 18 St. Luke's statue is located at the southeast corner of the Church with an ox at his feet. St. Luke was a companion of Paul and traditional author of the Third Gospel and also of The Acts of the Apostles. He is described in one of Paul's epistles as "my dear friend, Luke, the doctor." Luke traveled with Paul on several of his missionary journeys as a Greek Gentile directing his message to Gentile Christians. Luke is symbolically represented by a winged ox. This probably is inspired by the sacrificial element in the verses at the beginning of his Gospel. Luke is the Patron Saint of physicians, artists and butchers. St. John - Feast Day - December 27 St. John's statue is located at the northeast corner of the church with an eagle at his feet. St. John was the son of Zebedee and was one of the twelve apostles. He is traditionally associated with five books of the New Testament and is often identified as the Beloved Disciple of the Fourth Gospel. John was the youngest of the twelve apostles and Jesus seemed to have a particular affection for him for he is referred to as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." John lived a long life spreading the message of Christianity. When he was very old and finding it difficult to preach, he would simply say, "Love one another, that is the Lord's command." John is with an eagle, symbolizing the ethereal quality of his Gospel. John is the Patron Saint of Turkey and poison sufferers. Statues have always been an important presence in Catholic Churches. Fashioned as expressions of faith, they are honored by the faithful because they represent persons who share God's holiness. The Church has supported the use of statues, maintaining that veneration of statues is directed not to the material itself, but to the person represented; and that veneration of statues and the persons mirrored by them is appropriate, being distinct from the adoration due to God alone. The statues that we have in our new church were sculpted by Ferdinand Stuflesser Ars Sacra in Ortisei, Bolzano, Italy. The statues took one year to be completed. The were modeled in clay, cast in bronze and treated in a natural tonality.

6 Bulletin Board Stewardship Corner LOVE AND COMMITMENT I DO and AD SUM Two of the greatest gifts God gives us are love and commitment. These gifts, however, must be nourished daily by prayer and the sacraments or they become weak and sometimes fade away. Consider the following commitment: I DO. With these two little words, a married couple sets off on a lifelong journey of love and commitment. Even the most blissfully happy couples will tell you, nonetheless, that marriage is hard work. These husbands and wives don t just coast through life on a wave of romance and passion. They are constantly working on their relationship and how it can become stronger. We rejoice and admire these married couples when their love and commitment results in silver and golden anniversaries. When you speak of these couples, they always say God was the Third Person in their marriage that kept them together. AD SUM I am here...these two little words are spoken by a young man about to be ordained a priest as he hears his name called to come forward. After ordination he also sets off on a longtime journey to love, commitment and the unknown. He never knows how long he will remain in one parish, he never knows where he will be sent to minister, he never knows whether he will be alone or with another priest. The only thing he does know is that he must serve his flock, love his work, persevere and be committed. In the year 1965, a young man named Jude O Doherty said, AD SUM and was ordained a priest. From that moment, he dedicated his life to God and to the Church. He has used his time and talents to the fullest, and has helped many people. In 1982, he became our Pastor at Epiphany, and we all know how much he means to us. We thank him for his accomplishments, leadership, (Continued in the next column) perseverance, and above all for his commitment of 50 years to the priesthood. So, now we have to celebrate this milestone before the start of the next 50 years. You are all invited to attend the Golden Anniversary Mass of Monsignor O Doherty s ordination on Friday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow Congratulations, Monsignor O Doherty, and thank you. A Summer Blessing May you walk with God this summer, in whatever you do. Walking with God means... Walking with honesty and with courage, walking with love and respect and concern for the feelings of others. May you talk to God this summer, every day and in every situation. Talking with God means... Praying words of praise for the beauty of creation, saying prayers of thanks for friends and good times, asking for God s help in all your decisions, expressing your sorrow when you have failed. May you walk with God every day. Amen

8 Marriage and the Supreme Court The Supreme Court is now considering whether states can define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and whether a state that does so must recognize a marriage contracted out-of-state by two persons of the same sex. The Court is expected to rule on both questions by the end of June. A broad, adverse ruling would redefine marriage in the law throughout the entire country, changing thousands of laws regarding marriage, family and children and threatening religious freedom in numerous ways. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has urged the Supreme Court to uphold the right of states to define marriage as the union of husband and wife and to recognize only such unions, all for the good of society and particularly children. What you can do Pray, Fast, Sacrifice The Bishops have encouraged Catholics to participate in a Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. Visit to learn more and commit to praying and fasting for life, marriage, and religious liberty. The Bishops have also called for a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21-July 4 focusing on the Freedom to Bear Witness. Visit Advocate for Marriage Don t be afraid to talk about it. Be a witness for the truth of marriage. Take advantage of opportunities to speak about it kindly with family, friends, neighbors or co-workers. Be prepared for false charges of discrimination and to respond with the following truths in charity. What is Marriage? Marriage is the permanent and exclusive union of one man and one woman, for the good of the spouses and for the procreation and education of children. One man, one woman, for life. The difference is the difference. Men and women are equal and different. Sexual difference is essential to marriage and raising children. Ignoring or removing the difference is... the problem, not the solution (Pope Francis). Mothers and fathers matter. They aren t interchangeable. While single parents and others raising children often make heroic sacrifices and deserve support, society should also affirm every child s basic, natural right to come from and be raised in the loving marital union of his or her own father and mother. Protecting marriage matters to everyone. Law is a teacher, and redefining marriage in the law teaches that one sex is interchangeable with the other, and that either a mother or a father is dispensable as a parent. It teaches that marriage is whatever consenting adults say it is, and that adults have a right to children they did not conceive. These are simply false.
