1 02DM804 Church Growth and Renewal RTS Doctor of Ministry July 16-20, 2018 Sanders L. Willson Course Description: In this course we will attempt to grow in our understanding of what a healthy and growing church is and how we can more effectively lead her toward greater health and growth. Our primary resource will be the Scriptures, and we will also look to various theological and cultural commentators, as well as our shared experiences as current leaders and practitioners. Topics will include church and culture, evangelism, discipleship, worship, preaching, teaching, missions, and various aspects of pastoral leadership. Course Instructor: In 2017 Sandy Willson retired as senior minister of Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis, TN after 22 years. He previously pastored Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton, TN and Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church in Lookout Mountain, TN. Currently he serves as the interim senior pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham AL. Sandy received a B.S from the University of Virginia, an M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a D.D. from Capital Seminary and Graduate School (Lancaster Bible College). Sandy and his wife, Allison, were married in 1972 and are grateful for five children, three daughtersin-law, a son-in-law, and twelve grandchildren. Class Dates & Times: Mon., July 16: 1:00 PM 6:00 PM Tues., July 17: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM Wed., July 18: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM Thurs., July 19: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM Fri., July 20: 9:00AM 1:00 PM Course Assignments: Book reports Each student should read 2000 pages of new reading and submit a one-page book report on each book or article over 50 pages in length. One report can be submitted to summarize all of the shorter readings. The books reports are due on October 30, Integration paper Each student will also submit a page integration paper describing how he/she will seek to implement what has been learned, interacting with as many of the reading assignments, lectures, and discussions as possible. This paper is to be submitted to the D.Min. office by October 30, Required reading Each student should read the required books (if not already read) and at least one book from each of the four categories for a total of 2000 pages of new reading. Willson Campus: Orlando Date: July DMin* Student Learning Outcomes In order to measure the success of the DMin curriculum, RTS has defined the following as the intended outcomes of the student learning process. Each course contributes to these overall outcomes. This rubric shows the contribution of this course to the DMin outcomes. Rubric Strong Moderate Minimal None Mini-Justification Biblical/ Theological Foundations: Significant knowledge of biblical and theological foundations for pastoral ministry. (This includes interaction with Biblical texts, as well as awareness of Reformed Theology.) Strong Through our readings and discussions, we shall seek a solid biblical and theological mandate for church growth and renewal. Historical/ Contemporary Practices: Significant knowledge of historical and contemporary practices of pastoral ministry. Moderate We shall study a variety of church growth and renewal strategies. Integration: Ability to reflect upon and integrate theology and practice, as well as implementation in a contemporary pastoral setting. Strong We shall seek to apply our readings and discussions to our current areas of ministry. Sanctification: Demonstrates a love for the Triune God that aids in the student s sanctification. Moderate We shall study how church growth and renewal is rooted in the personal growth and renewal of the leader.
