2 InJohn14:13theLordJesusgivestoHisdisciplesagreatpromise: Whateveryou shallaskinmyname, thatwillido. ButwemustappreciatethefactthatHe also provides some specific guidelines to govern our prayer life; guidelines to be followedifthepromiseistoberealized.ifwewouldhaveaneffectiveprayerlife,we mustabidebytheguidelinesjesusprovides. I.WeMustApproachtheFatherinJesus Name(Jn.14:13 14) ThegreatqualificationtheLordJesusrepeatsthroughoutHisteachingonprayer isthis:forprayertobeeffective, wemustapproachthefatherinjesus name. Foronething, toprayinJesus namemeanstoapproachthethroneofgodonthe basis of Jesus authority and Jesus merit, this is especially evident in such a passage as John 16:23 24, I tell you the truth, if you shall ask the Father in my nameforanything, hewillgiveittoyou. 24 Uptonowyouhaveaskednothinginmy name;ask, andyoushallreceive, sothatyourjoymaybecomplete. JesusalonepossessesaccesstotheFather, andHealonecanprovideuswithsuch access, ashedeclarestomaryattheemptytomb: Jesussaidtoher gotomy brothers, andsaytothem, iascendtomyfatherandyourfather, andmygodand yourgod (Jn.20:17.)WeshouldalsobearinmindJesus testimonytotheeffect thathepossessesaccesstothefather, andtheexclusiverighttograntthataccess towhomhewills: Jesussaidtohim,Iamtheway, andthetruth, andthelife;no onecomestothefather, exceptbyme (Jn.14:6.) Furthermore,JesusalonehastheapprovaloftheFather.AfterJesuscameupout of the waters of baptism, there came the Father s voice out of heaven, announcing, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased (Matt. 3:17.) ConsiderthetestimonyofMartha, Iknowthat, whateveryoushallaskofGod,God willgiveyou (Jn.11:22.)Consider,too,Jesus owntestimony: Jesuslifteduphis eyesandsaid, Father,Ithankyouthatyouheardme; 42 andiknewthatyoualways hearme (Jn.11:41b 42a.) JesusenjoysthisaccesstotheFatherandhastheFather sapproval Heenjoys thisauthoritywiththefather becauseofhisrighteousness.comparethewords oftheblindbeggar, WeknowthatGoddoesnotlistentosinners.Helistenstothe godlymanwhodoeshiswill (Jn.9:31,)withthetestimonyofJesus, Theonewho sentmeiswithme;hehasnotleftmealone, forialwaysdowhatpleaseshim (Jn. 8:29.)InPsalm24:3,thePsalmistasksthequestion, Whomayascendthehillof thelord?whomaystandinhisholyplace? Hegoesontoanswerthatquestion by declaring, He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false (Psl. 24:4.) Compare the words of the Psalmist(Psalm24:3 4)withthetestimonyofJesusspokentoMaryasHestood beforeherattheemptytomb: Jesussaidtoher, Donottouchme;forIhavenot yetascendedtothefather;butgotomybrothersandsaytothem, iascendtomy FatherandyourFather, andmyGodandyourGod (Jn.20:17.)

3 James declares, the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (Jas. 5:16b) andjesusistheonetrulyrighteousman.thewriterofhebrewsalludes toisaiah61:1,3andinformsusthatthispassageofo.t.scriptureisreferringto Jesus: You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God,hassetyouaboveyourcompanions (Heb.1:9.) The access sinful men have to God as their Creator is but a faint and transitory shadowoftheaccessthattheholysonofgod, ourlordjesuschrist, hastogod HisFather.Bywayofillustration, theownerofabaseballteammightsaytothe public at large, As an act of generosity, I will allow you access to the stadium bleachers on certain days of the regular season. But to his son and his son s friends, he says, I will give you access to my personal skybox at any time, includingtheworldseries! Our Lord Jesus Christ is graciously inviting us to participate in His wonderful accesstothefatherwhenheinvitesustoprayinhisname thisaccesstothe Father, onethatisprofound, intimate, andeternal. Ifwedesiretohaveaneffectiveprayerlife, wemustapproachtheFatherinJesus name: coming on the basis of Jesus acceptance and authority with God the Father, anacceptancethatisduetoHisperfectobedience. II.WeMustPrayinHarmonywithJesus Will(Jn.14:13) The great qualification praying in Jesus name also has a second meaning; namely, itmeanstoofferupprayerthatisinharmonywithjesus ownmindand will.thismeaningisdominantinsuchpassagesasjohn14:13 14andJohn15:7: Andwhateveryoushallaskinmyname, thatwillIdo,sothattheFathermay beglorifiedbytheson. 14 Ifyoushallaskanythinginmyname, thatwillIdo. (Jn.14:13 14) Ifyouremaininme, andmywordsremaininyou, askwhateveryouwill, andit shallbedoneforyou.(jn.15:7) In John 14:13 it is implied that prayer offered in Jesus name will be answered because such prayer will cause the Father to be glorified, and the Father is glorified by means of that which is in accordance with His will and that which reflectshisholycharacter.notethatinjohn15:7thepromiseofeffectiveprayer iscloselyattachedtotherequirementthatweremaininchristandthathisword remain in us as we adhere to this requirement our prayers will inevitably be shapedbythemindandwillofchrist. Ifwedesiretohaveaneffectiveprayerlife, wemustprayinharmonywiththe mindandtheheartofjesus. III. We Must Seek to Live in Compliance with Jesus Commandments (Jn. 14:15) Take careful note of the close proximity of John 14:13 14, And whatever you shallaskinmyname, thatwillido, sothatthefathermaybeglorifiedbytheson. 14 Ifyoushallaskanythinginmyname, thatwillIdo, tojohn14:15, Ifyoulove me,youwillkeepmycommandments. Do we harbor an unforgiving spirit against anyone, if so, this will not only hinderourprayerlife, itwilljeopardizeourwholerelationshipwithgod.letus take very seriously the words of our Lord Jesus as recorded in Mark 11:25, wheneveryoustandpraying, ifyouhaveanythingagainstanyone, forgivethem; sothatyourfatherwhoisinheavenmayalsoforgiveyourtrespasses. Following the Lord s Prayer, Jesus predicates our own forgiveness on our willingness to forgive others: if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Fatherwillalsoforgiveyou. 15 Butifyoudonotforgivementheirsins, yourFather willnotforgiveyoursins (Matt.6:14 15.)IfwehavebeentherecipientsofGod s
