1 TIMOTHY 4 1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits & doctrines of demons, If you were to write a job description for an evangelist what would it contain? In this chapter Paul emphasizes both the character & the work of an evangelist. He lists three qualities that Timothy must possess if he is to be successful in serving the Lord as an evangelist. I. HE MUST USE GOD S WORD TO EXPOSE SIN & INSTRUCT IN RIGHTEOUSNESS (1-5) A. Paul warned the Ephesian elders that false teachers would invade the church (Acts 20:28-31), & he gave a description of them in these verses. 1. They Deceive with lies & demonic influences that cause saints to depart from the faith (1). a. Notice, the Spirit expressly says b. The Bible is the result of His work; in it He expresses Himself in words. c. He is obviously a separate person in the Godhead. d. His Divinity is proven by the fact that He told us what will happen (2-3). 2. They Play Act hoping to win the affections & acceptance of Christians (2). 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron [I will come back to this point.] 1

3. They Indoctrinate by imposing their own ordinances on Christians (3-5). 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron. 3 forbidding to marry, & commanding to abstain from foods WHICH GOD CREATED TO BE RECEIVED WITH THANKSGIVING BY THOSE WHO BELIEVE & KNOW THE TRUTH. 4 For every creature of God is good, & nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God & prayer. a. One cannot play act without knowing his true personality, so these false teacher knew the truth & yet made every attempt to side-step it. a. They taught that there was a spiritual advantage to these things (Gen 2:18; He 13:4; 1 Cor 9:5; 1 Tim 5:14; Gen 9:3; 1 Cor 10:25-26; Rom 14:6b; Acts 15:29) What fruit? b. Their consciences (the seat of reasoning) was seared (cauterized), & insensitive to honest reasoning (Heb 5:14; 3:13) b. But God had a spiritual purpose both for marriage (Eph 5) & for the creation of food (Matt 14:19; Acts 27:35 give thanks). B. Regarding false teachers Jesus said, You will know them by their fruits (Matt 7:16). What fruit? 2. A blatant disregard for the clear teachings of the apostles (1 Jn 4:1-6; 2:19; Rev 2:2) [First, an evangelist will instruct Christians in regard to the faith or the truth, which will enable them to expose error. A second quality that an evangelist must have if he is to be successful in the Lord s work ] 1. The conscious & deliberate effort to side step the truth (implied in verse 2). 2

II. HE MUST PRACTICE WHAT HE PREACHES; LIVE OUT WHAT HE TEACHES (6-12) 3. To keep himself on the right track, he is to exercise himself in godly endeavors. 6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith & of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But reject profane & old wives fables, & exercise yourself toward godliness. A. An evangelist must be self-disciplined in what he gives consideration to or he will not be ready to follow the good doctrine he has been taught. a. Our society is preoccupied with health, fitness, & the outward appearance. b. A healthy body is better suited to serving the Lord, but holiness of mind & body should be the priority. 1. He is to nourish (educate) his heart with the words of faith (good doctrine; Psa 1:2). B. By practicing what he was given to preach, Timothy would set the proper example before others. 2. He is to reject unholy & uninspired influences that may divert his attention & his affections away from good doctrine. An evangelist should know what the enemy teaches, but he must not allow himself to be swayed. Like a chemist may handle & study poisons, but he cannot permit them to get into his system. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is & of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying & worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end we both labor & suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command & teach. 12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1. Timothy s youth (40 s) would be the first attribute his dissenters would attack. 3

[The way an evangelist can protect himself against false teachers & false brethren is to take away their ammunition. He is to use God s word in a fair manner to expose sin & instruct in righteousness, & then he is to adhere as closely as he can to the words of faith & good doctrine. He is to give no one a valid reason to question the motives behind his work: he is to be an example of godliness. The third quality that Timothy must possess if he is to be successful in serving the Lord as an evangelist 1. It describes the soldiers who went ahead of the troops to clear away obstacles so that others may follow. 2. If Timothy did not do his work then he would make little progress in his spiritual life, which in turn would affect the church. B. Paul stated four factors that would make Timothy s spiritual progress possible? III. HE MUST SHOW PROGRESS (13-16) 1. Be Devoted To God s Word (13): 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. A. The word progress is a Greek military term meaning pioneer advance. a. Give attention to devote yourself to, to be absorbed in. Reading public reading of the scriptures. Exhortation encouraging application of the word. Doctrine what is taught. 4

2. Use His Spiritual Gift (14): a. There is no progress in an evangelist s service without total dedication to the task (Matt 6:24). 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. b. A river rises no higher than its source. a. The presbytery (elders) appointed or ordained Timothy for his work, & they did so by prophecy or by the direction of the Holy Spirit. b. But it was Paul who bestowed the spiritual gift (2 Tim 1:6; cf. Acts 8:14-17). c. And if Timothy did not continue to use this gift, then its effectiveness could be lost through disuse. c. Gospel preaching is no sideline endeavor (Phil 3:13; Jas 1:8; 4:8). 4. Attend To Life & Then To The Doctrine (16): 16 Take heed to yourself & to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself & those who hear you. a. Paul gave the same advice to the Ephesian elders (Acts 20:28). 3. Make Preaching His Life s Work (15): 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. b. Don t stay so busy with what you perceive to be your duties, or what others perceive to be your duties, that you forsake yourself & your family. 5

CLOSING A. The building up of the saved & the seeking of the lost are the priorities of an evangelist. B. But unless the word of the Lord is in us, He cannot work effectively through us. 1. So it is the responsibility of every gospel preacher to PREACH THE WORD (exposing false doctrines) PRACTICE THE WORD (living an exemplary life) PROGRESS IN THE WORD (clearing the path for others) 6
