3 Welcome It s all gift! Everything we have has been given to us--whether that is such a great gift as salvation or as basic as the air we breath--and our response is one of gratitude. Some would say that it is our duty to give back to God from the abundant goodness we have received. I m not sure that is the right approach because duties often become something that just has to get done. Rather, we have been entrusted with God s goodness and are asked to responsibly share that goodness with others. This happens in a variety of ways: For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Diaper Changing Tables located in all men s and women s restrooms. Extra clothing for children in case of accidents. You will find a variety of sizes in the cabinets below the counter in the nursery, lower level. Please wash and return. Family Room for those who need a little more space, or for crying infants and energetic children during Mass. This glass enclosed space is located on the east side of the church. First Aid Kit/AED located in our Hospitality Minister s Room in the north hallway, upper level. Further Study Materials Books may be borrowed from our Library, lower level. Books and CDs may be purchased from the display in the Gathering Area, upper level. Don t see a title you would like? Call us! Games Cupboard located in the Dining Hall, lower level. A variety of board games for your family to use any time. Handicapped Accessibility - elevators are located in the north hallway. A wheelchair and a walker are also available. Hearing Assisted Devices for use during Mass, located in the Hospitality Minister s Room. Hospitality Room with a rocking chair and privacy for nursing moms. Lost & Found (St. Anthony s Bin) located in the Hospitality Minister's Room, upper level. Low Gluten Hosts - Talk to a Hospitality Minister. Mass Tote Bags located by each door. These bags contain activities to assist with keeping children occupied during Mass. Nursery care for children up to three years is typically offered during our Sunday 9 am Mass. Seat Cushions in the Gathering Area for those who need padding for our wooden pews. 4

5 Prayer for Stewardship Dear Heavenly Father, My parish is composed of people like me; I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with your help, O God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all things that I want my parish to be. Amen. 8 Safe Environment Safe Environment VIRTUS & Circle of Grace Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People from the USCCB (United States Council of Catholic Bishops) VIRTUS: Enabling a Safe Environment The Diocese of Winona requires all volunteers 18 years of age and older who are working with our children, youth, or vulnerable adults to attend a three-hour national best practice program called VIRTUS. VIRTUS is especially focused on the prevention of wrongdoing and the promotion of right doing. All parishioners are encouraged to attend a VIRTUS session. For training dates and times go to: Those volunteering in ministries marked with an asterisk (*) MUST: Attend a VIRTUS training session Authorize a criminal background check every five years Sign a Code of Conduct * Circle of Grace All Faith Formation programs and Catholic schools in the Diocese of Winona implement a safe environment curriculum for our children and youth called Circle of Grace, designed by the Archdiocese of Omaha. The goal of the Circle of Grace program is to educate and empower children and young people to actively participate in a safe environment for themselves and others. 8

12 Parish Leadership Parish Leadership Finance Council The Pax Christi Finance Council is an advisory group to the pastor and administrator. Members of the council are appointed by the pastor. The council meets monthly to advise the pastor on financial budgeting and operational topics for day to day parish management and long range financial planning. They also ensure compliance with civil laws in parish administration and oversee the physical properties of the parish. Tim Shea (office) ext. 104 Pastoral Council The Pax Christi Pastoral Council is a group of six parishioners nominated by the parish and selected for service through a discernment process. Additionally, the council includes the parish administrator, the parish trustees and the pastor. The Pastoral Council is the primary advisory body to the pastor responsible for attending to the pastoral care of God s people. Working for the pastor, the council guides, directs and supports all the work and activity of our parish community. The council discerns the needs and concerns of our parishioners and proposes meaningful and practical ways for the parish to respond to those needs, while maintaining our parish vision and mission. 13 Parish Leadership Stewardship Committee The task of the Stewardship Committee is to develop and foster various means and methods to help the parish and parishioners become more aware of Christian Stewardship. The US Bishop's pastoral letter. Stewardship: A Disciple's Response, defines a Christian Steward as one who receives God's gifts gratefully, cultivates them responsibly, shares them lovingly in justice with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. Stewardship is sharing one's time, talent and treasure; it is an attitude of gratitude. Art Dunne Parish Leadership Trustees Pax Christi has two lay trustees who are parishioners appointed by the pastor to provide guidance and leadership to the pastor and the parish on all topics relevant to the ongoing operation of the parish. They serve on the Pastoral and Finance Councils as well as working directly with the pastor in carrying out the ministry and mission of the parish. 15 Faith Formation Children (preschool) Children's Ministry at Pax Christi Pax Christi offers multiple opportunities for children and families to develop their Catholic faith. We offer faith formation for children two nights each week and during our weekend Masses. Also, we provide meaningful and fun programs throughout the year that strive to deepen a families' connection to one another and our Church. We welcome adults and older teens to volunteer. VIRTUS Safe Environment training is required. Liturgy of the Word for Children 3 years old - 1 st grade Liturgy of the Word for Children is a celebration of each Sunday's Gospel to help young children understand the Word of God. LOW is offered at the 5:15 pm Saturday and 10:45 am Sunday Mass for children age three to 1 st grade. Children leave Mass with a leader before the readings and explore the Scripture at their level. They return after Father's homily, enabling them to participate in the remainder of the Mass. Sarah Gallenberg ext. 106 Sunday School 3, 4, 5 years old and kindergarten age Sunday School is held during the 9:00 am Mass in the lower level of the church. It is a Bible-based program using Allelu!, an early childhood Catholic curriculum from the publisher, Our Sunday Visitor. Allelu! is a USCCB approved program. We emphasize prayer, educate on the lives of the saints, and connect the Scripture to the everyday life experience of a child. Children create crafts, sing, and play games which celebrate the Catholic Church and its values. A highlight of each year is our Christmas program. 16 Faith Formation Faith Formation Children (preschool & elementary) Catechesis of the Good Shepherd 3 yrs. old - 5 th grade Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Catholic faith formation program; our curriculum is rooted in the Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church, and our Mass. We utilize Montessori methods to nurture each child's relationship with God while educating them about the pillars of the Church. Children meet in a specially prepared room with materials to aid their learning experience, this room is know as an atrium. Each week children freely work with materials, participate in small group lessons with a trained catechist and engage in prayer time. Catechists participate in a nationally recognized training program to familiarize themselves with the curriculum and learn more about Montessori principles. We have a Nativity program during Advent and Stations of the Cross during Lent, as well as service and learning opportunities throughout the year. 17 Faith Formation Children (elementary) First Reconciliation and First Communion 2 nd grade and older The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a healing Sacrament that offers us an experience of God's boundless mercy. It frees us from our own sins but challenges us to have the same compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. The Eucharist, like Baptism, is a Sacrament of Initiation where God shares his holiness with us, so that we can share it with the world around us. We offer preparation for these two Sacraments to everyone in second grade and older through Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or Kingdom Kids. Those who attend Catholic School receive their weekly preparation during their school day. Children and parents from all three programs come together several times a year for community-wide activities. We prepare children for both sacraments beginning in September, traditionally celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation in December and First Eucharist in April. All are welcome! 18 Faith Formation Faith Formation Children (elementary) Kingdom Kids K - 5 th grade Kingdom Kids is a traditional faith formation program that uses the We Believe series from Sadlier Publishers. Our loving and enthusiastic catechists are the true gem of this program. Children meet in a classroom on Monday evenings, 4:45-5:45 pm or 6:30-7:30 pm. Sessions include a welcome, Scripture, discussion, connection to life, and prayer. The same group of children and adults meet throughout the school year to engage in a variety of creative learning opportunities. Our emphasis is placed upon the Four Pillars of the Catholic Faith: 1. What We Believe (The Apostle's Creed) 2. How We Worship (The Sacraments) 3. How We Live (The Ten Commandments and Beatitudes) 4. Prayer Kingdom Kids participate in specialty activities and programs including monthly prayer services created by children, the creation of a Kingdom Kids prayer book, and service projects for the poor. Sarah Gallenberg ext. 106 Summer Church Camp K 5 th grade Every year during the last full week in June, Pax hosts a truly Catholic summer camp for children in grades K-5. We begin with daily Mass, then enjoy a lesson, prayer, dramatic play, crafts, and games. Camp is M-F, 8:30 am - noon. 19 Faith Formation Youth (middle school & high school) Proof 6 th 12 th grade Our Mission & Vision We strive to form disciples of Jesus Christ and His Church, through a unified vision for ministry to young people, from early adolescence through young adulthood. Pax Christi Youth Ministry's Mission Statement is inspired by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' vision for youth ministry here in the American Church. Three interdependent and equally important goals guide the Church's ministry with adolescents. These goals state what it means for the Catholic community to respond to the needs of young people and to involve young people in sharing their unique gifts with the larger community. They express the Church's focus for ministry with adolescents, while encouraging local creativity in developing the programs, activities, and strategies to reach these goals: 1. To empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today. 2. To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community. 3. To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. Faith Formation Proof is the name of our faith formation efforts for middle school and high school students. The name comes from the fact that our gathering together is proof that Christ is alive and active in our lives; he is inviting us to seek him everyday and encouraging us to live as his disciples in the world. 20 Faith Formation Faith Formation Youth (middle school) Proof: 6 th and 7 th Grade Focus Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 pm* These two years of our lives are all about transition. All of our efforts focus on assisting our young students as they navigate changes in their lives. Sixth and seventh graders will engage in both large and small group style faith formation which will include: prayer; witness talks; multimedia presentations; games; discussion; activities; etc The content of our evenings together will come from a curriculum called Edge published by LifeTeen. Zach Rawson ext. 126 * VIRTUS required Proof: 8 th Grade Focus Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 pm* Eighth grade year will continue to utilize Edge for the first half of the year but will focus on developing a strong and personal connection to Sacred Scripture. During the second semester we will take a look at Christian morality, relationships, and human sexuality utilizing a Life Teen Life Night series about Theology of the Body. We will talk all about the beautiful gift of our bodies and the Church s magnificent teaching on human love and the divine plan articulated so very clearly by Saint Pope John Paul II. 21 Faith Formation Youth (high school) Confirmation Sundays 6:30-8 pm Throughout the Confirmation process, our goal is to provide a real and living encounter with the Lord Jesus and His Holy Catholic Church. Confirmation program at Pax Christi is typically two years. Year One: begins in the fall of 9 th grade Year Two: through the spring of the 10 th grade Utilizing Chosen and YDisciple, each student is led into a deeper relationship with Christ through a small group relationship and is equipped to make an adult decision to choose (or not choose) the Sacrament of Confirmation. This sacrament empowers students with the completion of baptismal grace and the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit as to be living witnesses of Christ Himself. Beyond Confirmation, the graces manifested will propel students into a strengthening in the bond of the Church and Her mission:...to make disciples of all nations (Matthew. 28:19), just as the Twelve Apostles were commissioned by Jesus in the Gospel. Dana Petricka ext. 107 * VIRTUS required Faith Formation Proof: High School Focus Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 pm* In high school we begin to shift faith formation efforts increasingly towards the small group setting. In particular, we like to focus very intentionally on developing strong prayer lives, accountability among peers, and a deep understanding of discipleship. We begin in a large group with the eventual goal of establishing smaller groups. Ultimately, we hope these years will launch young people into a relationship with Christ and His Church that will last well beyond high school and give them the tools, skills, knowledge, etc to be Jesus lifelong disciples and living saints. We use Life Teen s Life Nights and Summit Lectionary Studies along with other curriculum resources appropriate for the developmental stages of high school students as they begin to transition into young adulthood. 23 Faith Formation Young Adults Adults Rochester Area Catholic Young Adult Ministry Young Adults ages Young Adult Ministry is a city-wide initiative. Activities include prayer, Bible Study, small group discussions, sports, and socials. We collaborate to offer the best opportunities for all young adults in their 20s and 30s, whether single or married, have children, don't have children, are discerning a religious vocation, are Catholic, or not Catholic. Our mission flows from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops for young adult ministry: Ministry to and with young adults is an intentional outreach of the Catholic Church. Successful ministry with these men and women achieves four basic goals: To connect young adults to: God through Jesus Christ the Church and the Christian community the mission of the Church in the world a peer community to further support and nurture their faith Dana Petricka ext. 107 Group Blessed Chiara Women's Group Small group Bible studies Faith and Sports Night Discussion on growing in holiness and fellowship through sports. These are the questions that each of our offerings throughout the years strive to answer. Adult Faith Formation / Adult Spiritual Development is responsive to your needs. We offer: Book Studies Bible Studies Advent and Lent Reflection and Study Book Give-away at Christmas & Lent There are also opportunities for volunteers to help facilitate these sessions by leading the sessions and helping with hospitality. The group is open to all adults who are not in a committed relationship, whether you are never married, divorced, widowed; with or without children. The focus of this group is fellowship and supporting one another in living a positive Christian life. Outings have included hiking, outdoor concerts, morning coffee, participating in a fundraising walk/run, and mini-road trips. Members drive this group; anyone can lead or suggest an activity. This is a come-as-you are, and as-you-are-able, group. Events will also include volunteer activities in support of the parishes and the Rochester community. Join us for new friendships with single Catholic parishioners from each of the Rochester parishes. We follow a family for a year with initial contact shortly after the death, at Easter or Christmas and then at the time of the first anniversary of their loved one's passing. We offer our support with cards & Care Notes, which are very helpful in supporting the families with their encouraging words. Marcy Witter Fellowship Christian Experience Weekend (CEW) This weekend retreat for Christian adults (18 & over) is a time away from the busy-ness of daily life allowing you to encounter the Holy Spirit in a unique way. A team of lay people and ordained ministers conduct the CEW weekend. Women s weekends are typically in the spring. Men attend the CEW retreats in northern Iowa, also held in the spring. 32 Fellowship Fellowship DivorceCare Seminars Divorce Care is a support group that meets weekly. You will find it to be a warm, caring environment and will come to see your group as an oasis in an otherwise difficult season of your life. There are three key parts to your DivorceCare experience: Video Seminar: Encouraging and information-packed videos featuring leading divorce recovery experts. Support Group: Small group discussion about the weekly video content and the issues faced by individual group members. Workbook: Journaling and daily personal study exercises that reinforce the weekly session topics. Registration There is no cost to register, however there is a $15 fee for a workbook that is used at each session and daily for short homework assignments between sessions. Fall Schedule 2017 Divorce Care sessions begin Thursday, September 7, and meet every Thursday for 13 weeks. We will not meet on Thanksgiving. Winter/Spring Sessions 2018 will start in February. They eat a simple meal and, in a spirit of friendship, share their experiences of the previous month. After dinner, the mood shifts to the more obviously spiritual as the couples and chaplain reflect on Scripture and share prayers and intentions. The couples talk over the progress in their individual efforts to pray and to improve marital spirituality. Finally, they discuss study material on married life and faith. 36 Liturgy Liturgy - call Fran at the parish office Lay Liturgical Ministers include all the people having a role in the Mass who are not an ordained priest, deacon, or bishop. The Mass is the greatest prayer of the Church. We are all called to full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy. Every person in the assembly is encouraged to respond, sing, pray, and worship with their mind, body, and soul. The lay liturgical ministries are essential elements of the Pax Christi Masses. The scheduling of lay liturgical ministers is done through an online software program. It is easy to request a substitute and there are plenty of opportunities for those who prefer not to serve regularly, but would like to sub occasionally. Fran Kooistra (office) ext. 109 Altar Servers assist the priest during Mass. This ministry is open to ages 5 th grade through adult. A 1½ hour training is offered once or twice a year. Cross Bearers lead the procession, carrying the crucifix, into and out of church for weekend Masses. It is preferable for cross bearers to be vested with a white alb, sit with the altar servers, and hold the Roman Missal for the priest during Mass. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion distribute the Blessed Sacrament to the faithful during Mass. Some EMs also take Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. You can become part of this ministry as a confirmed Catholic who has a reverence for the Mass and is in good moral standing in the community. Training is offered once or twice a year. If needed, it is easy to request a substitute. 36

37 Liturgy - call Fran at the parish office Environment Committee meets periodically to evaluate the worship space of the church and coordinate the decorating of the environment for liturgies throughout the year. Help is also needed with the Christmas and Easter decorating - no need to be on the committee! Gift Bearers Two or more people carry up the bread and wine at the Offertory. To schedule ahead of time, contact Fran in the church office or you can volunteer by speaking with an usher minutes prior to Mass. This is a wonderful and easy ministry for all ages, especially families. Hospitality Ministries are essential for a welcoming faith community. Greeters and Ushers are scheduled on a team which serves every weekend for one month and then is off for two months. Hospitality Room Hosts are scheduled randomly for one or two Masses per month. It is easy to request a sub for any position. Greeters welcome parishioners at the doors with a smile. After Mass these ministers distribute bulletins. This is ideal for families who wish to serve together. No experience necessary and you may sign up at any time! Ushers assist in seating the congregation, arrange for gift bearers to bring up the bread and wine, assist with passing baskets for the offertory collection, and handle any minor issues that may occur. Hospitality Room Host are available after Masses to assist with registering new parishioners and answering questions regarding the Pax Christi faith community. This is an easy and fun ministry, which only takes about 15 minutes. Signing up to be an occasional substitute Host is also warmly welcomed. This is a particularly good ministry for someone who has been an active member of Pax for many years and would enjoy sharing their love of this parish family with others. Liturgy 37

Cantors should have a good singing voice and the ability to lead the faithful in effective participation. Instrumentalists are welcome! Choirs lead the congregation in singing. Our goal is to enhance our liturgies with music and to have active participation from the congregation at our weekend and Holy Day liturgies. Commitment is weekly for a month, usually two months of the year. Liturgy Committee is responsible for evaluating the liturgies at Pax Christi and making recommendations to enhance the spiritual enrichment of the Masses. The Liturgy Committee meets periodically for ongoing liturgical education and discussion. Mass Readers proclaim the Word of God at Mass. They also read the Prayers of the Faithful and the announcements if there are any. Mass readers are confirmed Catholics who serve 1-2 times a month. Projectionists advance the music Power Point slides during Mass. If needed, they manage the camera function. This is for high schoolers through adults, or younger with the presence of an adult. Sacred Vessel Cleaners Special care is taken when washing the chalices and other Mass items. Volunteer weekly, periodically, or on a substitute basis. It only takes about 15 minutes after Mass. Sacristans are responsible for ensuring the supplies needed for Communion are ready before the Mass. To be part of this ministry, you must be responsible and reverent. Sacristans at the weekday Masses also lead the congregation in the prayers before Mass. 38

41 Outreach Community Food Response Community Food Response is a private, non-profit organization that meets the growing needs of families to have a supplemental source of food. This program focuses on "rescuing" food that would normally be discarded from hospitals, hotels, restaurants, schools, and grocery stores, and then passing it on to individuals and families in need. Pax has a commitment on the fourth Friday of each month. There are three different jobs. Drive - pick up food at local restaurants and deliver it to Bethel Lutheran Church (1-4 pm) Sort & repackage food (2-4 pm ) Distribute give food to clients 4:45-6:30 pm) If you are unable to join the Pax team on fourth Fridays, we can connect you with volunteer opportunities on Monday/Wednesday at the new location near Gage East Apartments. communityfoodresponse.org Mary Klomps Outreach Detention Center Ministry The Adult Detention Center Ministry in an inter-parish program of lay people who provide prayer services to detainees at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center. Screening and orientation is provided by the facility. Sally Burns Family Promise Family Promise is a network of area churches who help homeless families with children under the age of 16, by providing them a place to sleep, food to eat, and a safe place for their family 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Family Promise provides support, caring, and basic needs while the family is in crisis. It gives them a chance to concentrate on finding employment and permanent housing in a safe and caring environment. We host families four weeks per year in our Pax Christi classrooms. 42 Outreach Outreach Funeral Luncheon When a loved one dies and the family makes funeral arrangements, they are invited to have a luncheon or reception. This time for fellowship is an important part of the grieving process. To assist families, we typically have two teams - a set up crew and a clean up crew, with an overlap time to serve the catered meal. The time commitment is generally about two hours, but can vary depending on the time or size of the funeral. Gail Keidl * VIRTUS required Garden Plots The use of a plot to plant a garden is coordinated through the Social Justice Committee as a way to utilize available land resources and to attempt to develop community with Pax Christi neighbors. Plots are available for parishioners and surrounding neighbors. There is no charge for use of the garden plot. We simply request that gardeners make good use of the land and keep their sites clean. Our garden plots are located on the west side of our campus, behind the fire station. Tim Haskamp Mike Burns Homebound Ministry Homebound Ministers bring Christ to parishioners who are unable to attend the weekend Mass due to a health or other problem. Homebound Ministers visit and bring Holy Communion once a month to the parishioners on their list, any time during their scheduled week. Prayer Wraps are knitted or crocheted in your home at your convenience. Materials may be donated or you may be reimbursed for yarn. If needed, we will deliver yarn and pick up your completed wraps. Prayers are said for the intention of the recipient during the creation of the wrap, they are blessed by our priests, and given to those in need. Meetings are optional, just three times a year to discuss ministry business, share patterns and get to know one another. Prayer Wraps are meant to comfort, enfold, hug, and give solace to the wearer in times of crisis or stress. Anyone going through a health crisis, medical procedure, long-term illness, loss of loved one, or other stressful life experience is welcome to request a Prayer Wrap (shawl, lap blanket, scarf or baby blanket). We are part of an international society of friends united by a spirit of poverty, humility and sharing which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule. The Society of St. Vincent depaul offers tangible assistance to those in need. This aid may take the form of intervention, consultation, or often through direct dollar or in-kind service. An essential precept of the Society's work is to provide help while conscientiously maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who are served. The Society recognizes that it must also assume a role of advocacy for those who are defenseless or voiceless. 45 Outreach Social Justice Committee Recognizing that Baptism calls each of us to work for social justice and following the guide of Catholic Social Teaching, our mission is twofold: to empower our fellow parishioners through education and to engage them in works of advocacy, with the goal of changing policies, structures, and institutions so that ultimately we all work on behalf of the common good. The Social Justice Committee meets monthly to identify and implement projects reflecting this mission statement. Ideas for projects that are consistent with our mission are welcome. Parishioners who are interested in education and advocacy related to social justice are encouraged to consider this opportunity. Sally Burns Sunday Lunch Program Various organizations serve meals to the underprivileged in Rochester every day of the week except Sundays. To fill the void, Pax Christi, in conjunction with the other five Catholic parishes in town, provides a wholesome meal on Sundays at St. Francis Church. Pax Christi volunteers are responsible to prepare the meal approximately every six weeks. Volunteers cook the food and serve the guests, then after the meal, they assist in cleaning up the kitchen and the cafeteria. Work is performed between 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. When it is our turn, we need Pax Christi volunteers. The guests served are from all walks of life, including men, women and children who are homeless, handicapped, lonely, addicted to alcohol or drugs, or just in need of companionship. 46 Prayer Prayer 46 Cenacle of the Divine Will "FIAT...Let it be done according to Your Will. God the Father wants His Kingdom to reign on earth as it does in heaven. It is what we ourselves pray for each time we say the Our Father. He has given each of us the gift of His Divine Will in Baptism, and it is up to us to live the Will of God each moment. Jesus desires to establish His Kingdom upon the earth conquering heart by heart, or better said, will by will. This is the marvel God wants to work in us: that our human will be unified, fused and made one with the Divine Will in such a way that they cannot be distinguished. The Cenacle is an instrument and means to gather together all who desire to know more about the Divine Will. Through Luisa Piccaretta's writings, Jesus teaches what the Holy Will of God can do, and how far it can go when the soul gives it full liberty to act, not interrupting its work with its human will. Cenacle meetings include prayer and study. Join us on Tuesdays from 9:30-11 am in Room 2. Beatriz (Bea) Velez David Kulzer Encounters with Mary Encounters with Mary is a study and prayer group devoted to deepening our understanding and appreciation of Mary, the Mother of God and Our Mother. The group discovers Mary through scholarly writings, sacred images, her messages at Rue de Bac, Lourdes, Fatima, and other approved Marian apparitions, as well as through prayer and personal reflections. Each Encounter begins with a reflection on Our Lady followed by a thoughtful praying of the rosary. Medieval and Renaissance masterpieces provide a backdrop for meditation and reflection. Historically, these works were the primary method of religious instruction for the uneducated faithful who viewed them within church altarpieces, chapels and stained glass windows. The subtleties and symbolism of these pieces allow us to experience the mysteries in a powerful way and with deeper understanding. All parishioners, with a special invitation to the youth, are encouraged to attend. 47 Prayer Eucharistic Adoration We invite you to learn more about yourself and your relationship with Christ while being in conversation with Him in a quiet atmosphere. Grow in your faith while adding some peace and order to your everyday life as well. Adorers sign up for an hour time commitment, or can visit the chapel anytime. Substitutes are also needed. The Eucharistic Adoration Chapel is located in the lower level of the parish office building. Adorers are scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 4:00 am - 11:00 pm. Jennie Dinneen Lay Carmelite Locally organized as the St. Joseph Lay Carmelite Community, the Lay Carmelite is called to the Family of Carmel to be deeply involved in the mission of the Church, and to contribute to the transformation of the secular world. A Lay Carmelite does this by sharing in the charism of the Carmelite Order. We find in Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and in the Prophet Elijah the models for this way of Gospel living. Profession of promises as a member of the Lay Carmelites is an intensified commitment to the living of one's baptismal promises. Prayer Being a Lay Carmelite is not just a devotion added to life; it is a way of life, a vocation. 48 Prayer Prayer Lumen Christi Lumen Christi is part of global charismatic renewal movement in the Church, whose aim is to empower, encourage and equip lay and ordained believers for evangelization and ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. The movement takes its name from the gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit, including prophecy, word of knowledge, emotional and physical healing, praying in tongues and many more. Lumen Christi is dedicated to helping people experience personal love of Jesus, surrender their lives to God the Father, and realize their full baptismal inheritance through life in the Spirit to grow in holiness. God is Love. Have you ever experienced personal Love of God? Lumen Christi prayer meetings are held every Tuesday at 6.00 pm in church. Everyone is welcome to come and join us for group prayer of praise, worship and intercession using the charisms of the Holy Spirit. Members also make rosaries at their leisure at home. We also discuss where to send rosaries, as the need for rosaries is great. Missionaries around the world as well as hospitals, prisons, and military request rosaries. Our goal is to do what we can to help fill that need. We meet to discuss the Sacrament and its significance, and to get to know other families who are seeking Baptism for their children. Let us help you prepare to celebrate this beautiful Sacrament of Initiation. Jessica Scully (office) ext. 105 Confirmation (Sundays) Throughout the Confirmation process, our goal is to provide a real and living encounter with the Lord Jesus and His Holy Catholic Church. The Confirmation program at Pax Christi is a two year program. Typically, year one of Confirmation preparation begins in the fall of the 9 th grade year and year two runs through the spring of the 10 th grade year. Students are typically Confirmed in 10 th grade after completing the two years of preparation. Utilizing Chosen and YDisciple, each student is led into a deeper relationship with Christ through a small group relationship and is equipped to make an adult decision to choose (or not choose) the Sacrament of Confirmation. This Sacrament empowers students with the completion of Baptismal grace and the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit as to be living witnesses of Christ Himself. Beyond Confirmation, the graces manifested will propel students into a strengthening in the bond of the Church and Her mission:...to make disciples of all nations (Matthew. 28:19), just as the Twelve Apostles were commissioned by Jesus in the Gospel. 51 Sacraments First Reconciliation and First Communion (2 nd grade and older) The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a healing Sacrament that offers us an experience of God's boundless mercy. It frees us from our own sins but challenges us to have the same compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. The Eucharist, like Baptism, is a Sacrament of Initiation where God shares his holiness with us, so that we can share it with the world around us. We offer preparation for these two Sacraments to everyone in second grade and older through Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or Kingdom Kids. Those who attend Catholic School receive their weekly preparation during their school day. Children and parents from all three programs come together several times a year for community-wide activities. We prepare children for both sacraments beginning in September, traditionally celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation in December and First Eucharist in April. All are welcome! To prepare for the sacrament of marriage at Pax, you are expected to contact one of the priests at Pax a minimum of six months prior to your selected date. No wedding date can be set prior to meeting with him, and no date is final until preparation is complete. Preparation includes: completing a FOCCUS (Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study) marriage preparation inventory, meeting with a trained FOCCUS couple to discuss the results, and attending a Pre-Cana or an Engaged Encounter weekend as a couple. It is a process in which people become members of the Roman Catholic Church. There are several stages in the process: Inquiry about the Catholic Church Reflection on the Scriptures Development of a sense of belonging to a faith community Reception into the Church happens at the Easter Vigil, the Saturday evening before Easter. Unbaptized persons celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. 56 Parish History The history of Pax Christi is not long, as parishes go, but the Pax Christi family has grown both in spirit and in size. We began in June 1973, by decree of Bishop Watters. Father James McCauley was sent to be the pastor developer, and was assigned the daunting task of establishing a new parish, to be called Pax Christi - the Peace of Christ. The first two years of Pax Christi's history were spent in planning, fund raising, construction, and bringing to reality the vision of a new parish. While the parish awaited its first church building, we celebrated Mass at Skate Country, an indoor roller rink; a beginning that's captured in a stained glass window located at the lower parking lot entrance. On special feast days and Saturday evenings during the final six months of construction, we worshiped at Assisi Heights, and held weddings and prayer services in the Madonna Towers chapel. Ground was broken in July 1974, just a year after the parish started. The rectory was completed by Christmas 1974 and in July 1975, Pax Christi was dedicated. As the parish continued to grow rapidly from its original 250 families, so did the parish's need for more classrooms and meeting space. Thus, in 1979, the Queen of Peace Hall was built and dedicated. Throughout the first few years of Pax Christi's history, the parish experienced explosive membership growth and, already in 1981, the parish reached its facility design capacity of 750 families. Growth continued. By 1984, Pax Christi numbered 1,000 families. In the late 1980's growth in our northwest section of Rochester accounted for 40% of the growth in the entire city. By then the trend was becoming very clear; the parish simply needed more space. In 1988, the addition of the Spiritual Center onto the original rectory gave us a chapel and much needed office, meeting, and work space. Because the parish continued to face an acute shortage of space, the Activity Center in the lower level of the church was constructed in In 1997, a capital campaign was launched to expand and enhance the gathering and worship spaces. It became evident that more space was needed for the office and ministries. The new rectory was built in 2005 and the former rectory was converted to office and youth space. In June of 2010, we were given an incredible gift, the Youth Center, which houses our ever-growing youth program. Currently, Pax Christi is home to over 1600 families. We are a growing, vibrant parish. Welcome home.
